CAMDEN MILITARY ACADEMY Camden, South Carolina 29020 EXCALIBUR Volume 29 1987 1 WHERE TO NOW? Not a day goes by that each person does not think about the future. Where to Now? What a question for eighteen and nineteen-year- old boys to think about. College, the armed services, the America labor force, and even marriage are just a few of the decisions that grace every high school student in America when they graduate. These are the decisions that change a person’s life, and they cannot be made in haste. This is why the Excalibur asks Where to Now? Although the question is a frightening one, every cadet who leaves this institution will be ready to make that decision, face it head on, and tackle the problem with fortitude and confidence. As young men, the cadets of Camden Military Academy are reminded that the decision made about the future is THATcadet’s deci- sion, and as long as he is happy with it, he will be nothing but a success. Where to Now?” —You decide. COL. PHILIP MINGES DEDICATION The 1987 Excalibur is dedicated to Col. Philip S. Minges, Jr. (USAR, Ret.). Col. Minges is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is a graduate of The Citadel and worked for over 30 years as a civil engineer for the DuPont Company here in Camden. He retired from the U. S. Army Reserves with the rank of Colonel. After his retirement from DuPont, Col. Minges came to CMA as the Director of Development and Alumni Affairs. During his two years at the Academy, Col, Minges organized the Annual Fund drive which has enhanced campus life through additional programs and equipment and improvements to the physical plant. He also organized CMA’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle and served as source of information and assistance for cadets interested in attending The Citadel. CoL Minges always had time for any cadet who needed the benefit of his wisdom and experience tempered with his youthful and optimistic outlook on life. He is a friend to all who knew him, and, as such, the Class of 1987 designated him an Honorary Camden Military Academy Cadet. Col. Minges, we thank you for your demonstrated interest and concern for the Corps of Cadets and wish you well in your second retirement. Col. Minges with CMA's Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle PEOPLE PEOPLE 8 Class Of 1987 GREGORY JOHN ADAMS KEENER R. MARC LEE WEBB 9 5 YEAR CADETS — MYKEL STONE and JON FAULKNER MICHAEL BRET STONE IN MEMORIAM AUGUST 24, 1969 - DECEMBER 29, 1986 10 This year, the Academy suffered one of its most tragic losses ever. On Dec. 29, 1986, Mykel Bret Stone was killed in an automobile accident in Jacksonville, Florida. I have been asked to write this article because the senior class feels that the memory of him should be forever engrained in history. To his friends, Myke was a mother, a father, a brother and a confidant. If someone ever needed a friend to talk to, they always knew that they could turn to Myke for an open ear, an open mind, fatherly advice, or even a shoulder to cry on. Myke always seemed to understand. His presence filled a room with the never ending light of life itself. He was a happy person and when people were around him they were happy. He made people forget about their problems and concerns. Never have I known someone as unselfish and as caring for others as he was. The contributions and sacrifices that Myke gave to the Academy and especially his friends can never be measured but they will always be remembered. 1 remember once when Myke told me that I should live life one day at a time and to live that day to the fullest so that when it came time to go to sleep, I could look back and know that up until that moment, my life had been a good one. To the senior class, In memory of Mykel Stone, I pass these words on for everyone to read because when Myke went to sleep, he knew that he had lived a good life. Leader Warnock, 2nd PLT. Leader Davenport, 1st SGT Price Barr, Advisor — Com. Feltham, Company Commander — David Galemore EVIL “A” Alpha Company is not just a company with cadets; it is more like a family. The cadets work together as a team, not just a few cadets doing the work. Team spirit is working result- ing in a strong candidate for honor company. The company commander, David Galemore, and the rest of the officers provide the drive and motivation for the rest of the company. One cadet went so far as to say that the cadets in the other companies are trying to get moved into ‘A” because it’s the best. Warnock leads his platoon during a practice dress parade. 54 1ST PLATOON: McGraw, Shaw, Greenwell, Hendrick, Anderson, Specner, Hayes, Yurkiewicz, Holcombe, Steen, Aaron, Lee, Scott, Palassis, Collins, Jordan, Lynch, Mott, Winje, Guerry, Merriwether, Miller, Hemingway, Adams, Morrow, Hall, Field, Osswald, Lacy and Platoon Leader Warnock, 2ND PLATOON: Green, Glover, Beckett, Carver, Geist, Jones, White, Danieil, Brank, Bernthal, Meredith, Hevey, Sheally, Grady, Hargett, Ellis, Santos, Ramsey, Rowe, Barbot, Trumpy, Broome, Lucas, Burnikel, Barr and Platoon Leader Davenport. 55 BRAVO COMPANY Guidon — Mitch Porter 1st Platoon Leader — Chris Bishop, 2nd Platoon Leader — Charles Hudson, 1st Sgt. — Will Rice and Scott Grigg, Company Advisor — Col. Watson, Company Commander — Jim Suddeth. Bravo Company is a good clean cut group of cadets who know what they are doing. Company Commander Captain Suddeth knows how to organize his ideas well enough to get himself together so that his company will do well also. Most of them not only respect themselves, but every single cadet in the battalion as well. The officers want their company to grow up and be real men. 56 2nd Platoon in action. Whitmire, Goodloe, Perry, Fittipaldi, Thurston, Wright, Mitchell, Brown, Escudero, McLeod, Gause, Thompson, Leopold, Lennert, Brannon, Bostick, Beam, Pressley, Fuson, Kirby, Stewart, Abbott, Schwilm, Herron, De La Guardia, and 1st Platoon Leader Charles Hudson. Learning lessons of life, vividly living in good spirits, showing the friendship of every cadet, pulling through hard times, Charlie Company stuck together as an honor company should. Every cadet put in his free time, blitzing halls, walls, and rooms. The company worked, lived, loved, and led the way together — winning the way upward prestigiously to the top in a military fashion. Guidon — Adams, 1st Platoon Leader — Danny Parker, 2nd Platoon Leader — Lamar Shaw, 1st Sergeants Thomas Clack and Jon Faulkner, and Company Commander — Eric Polins. Rebuilding the pride and distinction of the band has been no easy task but with the enthusiasm generated by its officers, great progress has been made and continues to be made. If it were not for the band how would the other companies manage to function during dress parades. Band Company not only performs for our corps, but they perform at other functions in the community, as well as the Veterans Day Parade. The entire corps is proud of the everlasting impression it's making on the community; it’s this kind of dedication that reflects on us all. 1st Sgt. — Rusty Burgess, 2nd Platoon Leader — Robert Lucas, 1st Platoon Leader — Matthew Parrott, Drum Major —Jonathan Momingstar, Company Advisor — Major Green, 1st Lt. Although the record did not reflect a winning record to the common sports lover but as a team, the Spartans learned and experienced what it takes to be winners. Even when the mighty warriors of the great Spartan era in Greece lost to the Persians, the camaraderie and esprit held among the members of their nation, made them stronger than ever before. The same held true for our Spartans this year as thirty young men molded themselves into a team of winners. FRONT ROW: Merriwether, Gurley, Liatos, Huculiak, Kirby, Holcombe, Morningstar, Vergnolle, Thomas, Webb, and Ellison. MIDDLE ROW: Bunn, Broome, Burgess, Shaw, Rice, Adams, Adams, Reinholtz, Evin, Rester, Ulmer, Faulkner. BACK ROW: Coach Hesson, Bostick, Clack, Garmon, Steen, Barr, Green, Hudson, Fittipaldi, Jeffries, Brown, Fuson, Perry, Parker, Robinson, Hemingway, Brown, Mitchell, and Coach Boland. 67 68 SPARTAN JV FOOTBALL A football injury? The Excalibur would like to pay special tribute to Jody Green and Thomas Clack who made it to the All-State Independent Team; Jon Faulkner and Frank Kirby who made the All-Conference Team; Coach Boland and Coach Hesson who led the Spartans to battle week after week. Congratulations to all the Spartans for an exciting season. Not the same ref? 69 An offensive lineman keeps the defense away from our quarterback, Ronnie Vergnolle. 7TH 8TH GRADE FOOTBALL The 7 th and 8 th grades had a team for the first time in CM A history. Coach Leigh Dellinger did a remarkable job with the team considering most of them had no playing experience whatsoever. The team had five games and hopes that next year, they will be able to win some of those close games. Team members include Taylor Rion, Will Rutledge, Woody Burris, Matt McEwen, Cordt Trumpy, Billy Dial, Tommy Lucas, David Christian, Jody Green, Chris McCain, Marsh McLeod, Brad Nichols, Mike Osswald, Randy McManus, Chris Henry, Nick Palassis, and Alex Escudero. 70 SPARTAN BASKETBALL The 1987 Spartan Basketball Teams are having rebuilding years which is a hard job considering the tough and long schedules that they faced this season. Both the varsity and JV squads lost key players during the semester and new players came in and did a remarkable job adapting to their new team and coaches’ ways of playing. There were many close games in which our Spartans came out victorious. The Spartans feel that next year will definitely be more successful. FRONT ROW: Will Thomas, Ron Landers, Roger Kirby, Carl Reinholtz, Mitch Stevens, Scott Grigg, and Les Brown. BACK ROW: Coach Eric Boland, Jack McMinn, Lance Merriwether, Deniz Evin, Steve Carroll, Frank Kirby, and Fritz von Kolnitz. 71 Deniz Evin shoots the technical. Roger Kirby gets the loose ball. R H O 0 O O T P E R S The Senior Cheerleading squad does a few pushups. PYRAMID POWER The 1986 Cross Country Team had a new coach and a new team. Although the team was fairly inexperienced, Coach Ron Glancy already has those that are returning practicing. They are only losing one team member to graduation so next year’s team will have the experience necessary to have a winning season. Coach Glancy feels that it will take a few years to get the team to maximum potential. TEAM MEMBERS : Jonathan Meredith, Lee Weaver, Jerriel w Anderson, Raji Singh, Keith Carver, Jerry Sheally, and Tom Killinger R Overall the wrestling team did an excellent job with a team record of 7-5. This is only CMA’s second year having a wrestling team, but with the experience and leadership of Coach Hesson, the wrestlers upheld the Spartan name. Individual records are E S as follows: 98 Shaw, Lee 4-3 145 Robinson 11-1 T 105 Brown, TW 4-1 155 Davenport 1-6 L 112 forfeit Webb 1-3 119 Shaw, Lamar 5-3 167 Johnson, Steve 2-4 126 Richardson 1-3 175 Holcombe 9-3 132 Porter 6-4 185 Bogan 2-3 1 138 Mitchell 3-4 195 Bishop 4-2 N Hvy.Wt.
