Endurance, a scorn of lux- ury, and unyielding firmness are still spoken of as Spartan vir- tues. 39 MILITARY Hudnell leads A Company during pass-in-review. Color Guard passes radiantly DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP FROM WITHIN THE CORPS Military training is a valuable influence upon young men, teaching them first to take orders and then providing authority to give them. CMA cadets necessarily feel responsibility to each other for their own actions. Through ex- perience, growth, maturity, and character development, cadets assume increased authority and responsibility naturally. The training program includes drill, ceremony, leadership preparation, and classes in military science and tactics, integral to the overall intellectual, physical, and moral development of each cadet. Military customs and courtesies are strictly observed and the dis- tinctive cadet uniform is worn at all times. Designated an Ml Junior ROTC school, Camden Military Academy is rated an Honor Unit with Distinction by the Department of the Army. The corps of cadets is formed into one in- fantry battalion, commanded by a cadet lieute- nant colonel; A, B, and C Companies, each commanded by a cadet captain; and a band company, also commanded by a cadet captain. Companies are comprised of two platoons, each of which is commanded by a cadet second lieute- nant. Competition between companies in drill, in barracks maintenance, and in discipline is keen. Overall winner in this year-long competi- tion is designated Honor Company. 40 Officers Center. BATALLION STAFF: Front Row. TB Bailey, Hawkins, Faile. Back Row: Ruppenthal and Rusch. With only three returning starters, the team, with fine coaching and hard work, produced a 5-2-1 record. After losing the first game and tying the second, the team sprang back with a five-game winning streak, only to have it end in the conference championship to Spartanburg Day School. In spite of this disap- pointment, we would like to thank the team for one of the best winning percentages the school has seen and also a second place in the conference. We should be proud of the 79-80 varsity team. 63 Cecil Faile tips off for the Spartans. J.V. BASKETBALL JV Basketball. Warming up before the game. Hambrick on the lay-up. Winning the first game, Captain Tommy Huff coached his boys to a very profitable season. Each player learned a lot and the season turned out well. Coach Huff was happy with the team's output and was pleased with the season. We should be proud of the 79-80 junior Spar- tans. 64 DAVIS’ DEAD-EYES Rifle Team: Front Row: TB Bailey, Handley, Lowe, Hargett, Sellers. Standing: JE Jones, HG Runyan, SFC Davis, Cheek, Calvert. For the past decade, the CMA Rifle Team has dis- played superior marksmanship. This year, with the addi- tion of several new members, our team continued on with this tradition of excellence by winning numerous matches throughout the Southeast and the nation. Under the direction of SFC John A, Davis, the team practices constantly to insure perfection. 65 Co-Captains: (L to R) Bill Cheek, Gregg Runyan. FOOT LOOSE AND Richard Clark makes the shot. This year's soccer team was one of the best CMA has ever fielded. Coach Steve Tucker picked his team and proceeded to teach them all he knew, which must have been considerable since the team played like I professionals and compiled an excellent record. 67 Scrambling for the loose ball. BAD NEWS SPARTANS Contestants from each company prepare for the swimming finals. 68 Jim Reed on the return. Lee Lindsay representing “C” Company in the swimming finals. 1979-1980 Neal Gifford and Chester Brinser represent “C” Company in doubles action. Captain Green and Major Gale supervising swimming. Barry Davis serves for A” Company. Intramurals are a major activity here at Camden Military Academy, assuring every student an active part in competitive athletics. Directed by Commander John Feltham, cadets participate in sports of their choice in preparation for company playoffs each six weeks, with each member of the winning company receiving one merit. Except for those playing in in- termural athletics, all cadets participate in the intramural program. 69 A” and “C” Companies battle in a preliminary heat. 72 Ancient Spartans were strong, participating in many activities to develop endurance, strength, cleverness, and the ability to think out difficult problems. In the twentieth century, CMA Spartan ex- periences demand many of those same capabilities. As an integral part of the school program, cadets participate in varied extra- curricular activity, promoting a sense of self-reliance and practical leadership. ACTIVITIES 73 Concert Band: (seated, L to R) CL Runyan, GBT Ferguson, Leggette, McCoy, Butler, Carr, Jackson, Swanson, (partially hidden) Cabrera, Chandler, Shuler, Cecil, O'Neal, Hedgepath, Rivers, TR Burns, Richardson, Ford. Bolick, Whitley, Fennell, Byrd, Sutton, (standing L to R) HG Runyan, Grooms, Flambrick, Copeland, Beck, Stewart, Allen, Katz, and Capt. Green. 74 Get your hand off my sax. LOOK OUT, LAWRENCE WELK Captain David Green is the leader of our bands. This year’s band class was not an easy “A” on a student’s report card. Only musicians who can play all of their music get top grades and go on trips. Cap- ;ain Green’s academic strategy works. This year’s pep band, jazz band, and es- pecially the marching band, are probably the best CMA has ever heard. Pep Band: (L to R) Byrd, CL Runyan, McCoy, Cecil, Hambrick, Allen, Butler, Carr, Leggette, and O’Neal. Beginning Band; (L to R) Ferriot, Case, Shreve, Stalmasek, SM Morris, Grimsley, Wilson, CR Morris, DD Dawson, Platt, Shearhouse. 75 Block “C”: (upper R to lower R) Faile, Shaw, Dereix, Hawkins, Forney, JJ Gardner, Fennell. Beeson, Blake, Drake, GBT Ferguson, CL Runyan, Dubon, Douglas, Bolick, Hall, Blevins, RL Clark, Copeland, Abercrombie, Kornegay, Tucci, Osteen, HG Runyan, Sealey, O'Cain, WG Bailey, and Cheek. “C” HOW THEY RUN The fighting Spartans of CMA are the many cadets who strive to be varsity athletes. To become a member of the Block “C” Club, a cadet must have lettered in a var- sity sport, an honor earned after hours of practice each day and after confronting the opposing teams on the athletic field. Each Block “C” member knows it’s worth all the effort for the privi- lege of wearing a “CM. RECREATION ROOM The “rec room” is the ideal place to unwind. What better place to take out frustrations than on a pinball machine? 76 The Staff: (L to R) Swanson, Rusch, Cmdr Feltham, O’Neal, GBT Ferguson, Hudnell, CL Krivohlavek, Allen. Bus Drivers: (on ground L to R) Graves, JE Lewis, (on bus L to R) Handley, Cheek, O’Neal: (extending from window) TB Bailey. “The bus will leave for downtown . . All cadets depend and rely upon cadet bus drivers, be it for a ride downtown, to church, to the doctor, to a ballgame, or whatever. This year’s drivers performed their tasks well and kept CMA moving. 77 Oh well, it’s only three quarts low. The Staff; (Kneeling L to R) Swanson, Graves, Cheek, Cmdr. Feltham, Whitaker, Lowe, Osteen, Rhodes. (Standing L to R) Kornegay, Douglas, MW Smith, GBT Ferguson, CL Runyan, JL Jones, Hall, Rusch, O’Neal, Carr, Blevins, Blake. BOOGIE-IN G CMA’s Dance Committee has one of the hardest jobs on campus. The gym is a much-used campus facility. As a sports activity concludes, dance committee often has only six hours to transform the gym into a dance hall, and often have even less time to tear it all down. Hard work though it is, it all pays off as cadets, dates, facul- ty, staff, parents, and friends get out there and express themselves on the dance floor. 78 Dancing can make you hungry. Say “Cheese. (Seated L to R.) Capt. Morris, Beck, Copeland, MHT Ferguson, (Standing L to R) Shaw, Goza, GBT Ferguson, Cecil, Noes. MHT Ferguson delivering a dramatic speech. MORRIS’S MARAUDERS CMA's highly acclaimed debate team upheld their excellent reputation this year. Captain Morris provided strong support and drove the team to new levels of competence. The group’s suc- cesses are truly noteworthy when you consider there were only two returning members. 79 Kitchen Help: (kneeling 1 to r) DK Brown, Leggette, (standing 1 to r) Bolick, RA Roberts, Grooms. MESSHALL MADNESS In the course of a school year, Mrs. Davis produces thou- sands upon thou- sands of individual meals. While she handles the brunt of the work, kitchen helpers assist her pre- paring the food and washing dishes, and KPs actually serve the battalion. 80 Tea time. The Staff: (seated) Mrs. Dallas. (L to R) Self, Rusch, Bolick, Beeson, Webb, Wilkes, Lackey. READING, REFERENCE, AND RHETORIC As head librarian, Mrs. Anne Dallas selects responsible cadets for her library staff. Each must have knowledge of books and where they are shelved in CMA’s library. Mrs. Dallas' library assistants work hard, but reward for their efforts is the satisfaction of assuring smooth operation of our academic center. Our dedicated Mrs. Dallas. 83 Maintenance men prepare and repair. The Staff: (kneeling) TB Bailey, (standing L to R) Harrelson, PG Bigness, DQ Gardner, Fennell, Bass, CL Runyan, and Mendelsohn. MAJOR JIM’S GYM CMA’s loyal gym staff maintains the facility and keeps everything organized. Major James Dozier heads the staff, and always manages to assure a smooth operation. The gym staffs hard work insures our athletes are happy. IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT Driver’s Education is an important training course taught by LtC. William P. Beckham. Fundamentals of driving, including knowledge of laws and protocol of the road, and actual behind-the-wheel experience are part of the program. You could at least learn_h°w to dribble. ART IS FINE Fine Arts Club is a group of cadets who study all sorts of aesthetic delights, including painting, ceramics, music, and photography. The club is headed by Captain David Green, Mrs, Lanning P. Risher, and Mrs. Charles R. White. The group of- ten travels to art exhibits, to museums, to plays, etc., and generally has a very good time while developing an increased appreciation of cultural of- ferings. 85 Mrs. Risher critiques a painting. Get my laundry off the floor. What's your number? SPIC ’N SPAN This year’s Laundry Staff efficiently turns it in on Mondays and gives it out again on Thursdays. Captain James White and his staff are dedicated to per- form a task that is as essential to com- plete as it is taken for granted to carry out. 86 The Staff: (L to R) Hedgepath, Wilkes, SC Brown. THE MEN FROM ATLANTIS This year's pool staff had it easier than previously, with a new pool complete with a modern filtration system. They also en- joyed it more because we now have one of the nicest pools in the whole state. Lifeguarding demands responsibility, and it can get tedious, but our pool staff mem- bers insure safety and a good time for all. 87 Serub-a-dub-TUB! Box 380 704-786-7239 Concord, NC 28025 In Closing This was no ordinary year. Much went on outside our little world here at Camden Military Academy — some good, some bad, some outright terrible. But this year marks the turn of the decade, a chance to start over, to resolve problems which arose during the seventies. The seventies were ten good years. We witnessed the end of the Vietnam War; increased concern for ecology; the first trans-Atlantic crossing by balloon; a test tube baby; greater concern for good physical health; ERA; the Apollo-Soyuz meeting; color pictures of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn; digital computers, calculators, watches, and games; and Skylab was manned for three months. It wasn’t all fun and games, however. We also witnessed Kent State, Watergate, saccharin scares, Vallium abuses, busing riots, dollar-plus per gallon gas, the Iran crisis, and Skylab’s descent on Australia, Events often reflected public apathy, a malaise which threatened to bring America down for the count. But she kept on punching. The world bout with which the Class of 1980 must contend probably won’t be easy rounds, but no one ever guaranteed they would be. Goodbye, faculty; goodbye, CMA; and, hardest of all, goodbye, friends. Just as we bade goodbye and farewell to the seventies, we must bid adieu to our CMA community, remem- bering the good times, having learned from the bad. Look out, world. The Class of 1980 is coming.
