Camden Military Academy Excalibur 1978 Table of Contents Military page 5. People page 21. Sports page 57. Twenty Years Proud A company formation during the early days of Camden Military Academy. The old style two story barracks looms in the background as a reminder of days gone by since our beginning. Even though this scene is many years old, it is reminiscent of our many formations today. Field trips to such historic sites as Fort Sumter off Charleston, S. C., help us understand our past. Our past is inherently part of our future. To under- stand where we stand today in 1978, we must remember CMA’s past. Humble beginnings with a handful of faculty and students have grown into a proud unit of approximately 250 cadets. Our future looks bright as we view a reflection of our past. A traditional salute of “eyes right” as a unit passes in front of the reviewing stand. In December of this year, the battalion held a parade in honor of a departing faculty member, SFC Cayton. The parade is the highest honor a military unit can bestow upon an individual. Work never seems to get done. Keeping all of our facilities clean and shipshape takes the effort of all :he corps. To maintain sharp rooms, barracks and selves is a 24. hou r a day job. But the work pays off as the USA has rated CMA “An Honor Unit with Distinction.” We look back into CMA's early history to see the inside of an old style open barracks. We have come a long way, to brick barracks with individual two-man rooms. This scene might seem a bit harsh and austere, but it also helped to form the foundation of CMA as we know it today. 3 Camden Military Academy and Her Community Camden Military Academy is ardently involved in her community. We are tied to her in myriad ways. Cadets from our Academy participate in many prestigious and worthy local happenings, such as: The Camden Heart Fund Drive; Veterans Day ceremonies; The Carolina and Colonial Cup Steeplechases; Camden Community Theater produc- tions; Camden Fine Arts Center activities; The American Cancer Society Fund Drive; The Camden Parade; forensic activities throughout the state and nation; plus countless others of no less importance. We of the Academy feel the tie that binds Camden and our school grows stronger and stronger each and every year. A choral performance in conjunction with a church choir. Camden cadets held a Christmas performance prior to our December Christmas furlough. Cadets in the choir have also appeared at a number of churches and in a play. Cadets are observing the military weaponry at a museum during a tour of Ft. Jackson in Columbia, in which 168 members of the corps toured this training facility and training sites. Cadets got a taste of real Army life. Cadets in 7th and 8th grade classes are shown above during a tour of Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, S. C. This day off from the usual schedule was spent learning a bit more about nature and her creatures. 4 Members of the 7th and 8th grade classes toured historic Fort Sumter in Charleston, S. C. These cadets enjoyed a taste of history that marked the beginning of our Civil War. Military ’78 Organization Of Camden Military Academy was founded in 1949 as Camden Academy. The present administration acquired the school in 1958 and it has subsequently become an eleemosynary institu- tion of approximatley 250 cadets. Camden is strictly a male boarding school with no day students. The aim of our academy is to develop young men mentally, physically and morally. Camden is a military school. Because of this, cadets must wear their uniforms at all times and obey strict military customs and cour- tesies each and every day. The corps of cadets is formed into one infantry battalion. This battalion is broken down into the following units: A or Alpha Company; B or Bravo Company; C or Charlie Company; Band Company and staff. Each company is commanded by a cadet captain and is divided into two platoons, each commanded by a cadet second lieutenant. Each platoon is made up of three squads of seven to ten cadets. All of the companies compete for the distinction of being awarded at the end of the school year, Honor Company. Chief Chaplain (MG) Norris Kelly, USA, during a visit to Camden, with the cadet lieutenant colonel at the traditional honor guard. Cadet 1SG Minick bears the General’s colors. The corps held a review in honor of the chaplain who also toured the campus and facilities and spoke to the cadet corps in our gym. The corps’ performance was appreciated not only by the Chaplain but also by the cadets themselves. Cadet officers saluting SFC Richard Cayton during a review he d in his honor. The corps paid their respects to this man upon his departure from the Academy. “Old Slick,” during his tenure at Camden, did his job to perfection. We of the corps of cadets are grateful for all SFC Cayton did to make this institution better. Camden is involved in numerous parades throughout the state of South Carolina during the school year. 6 The Corps of Cadets 1977-1978 . - :en Military Academy is designated as an Ml Junior ROTC School and is rated an Honor n Distinction by the Department of the Army. The inspector troops the line during the early morning ceremony. Members of the inspection team toured the company barracks and areas during their day at C.M.A. Each school year the United States Army designates a commit- tee of officers to evaluate Camden Military Academy’s JROTC Department. This year the inspection team was comprised of members of the ROTC staff of Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina. The team inspected cadets, barracks, adminis- trative records, campus, and security of military facilities. In the past, Camden Military Academy has scored 100% to earn highest ranking, that of Honor Unit with Distinction, earned through full participation of every CMA cadet, working as indi- viduals and as a team. 18 Each of the four companies worked very hard preparing themselves and their barracks and areas. The Pep Band provides that extra support at basketball as well as football games. CMA’s instrumental music program has grown and im- proved under the direction of Captain Green. The band has participated in numerous parades and this Christ- mas in Newberry, placed second overall when compet- ing against four “A” schools. The Marching Band’s main function is to play at Sunday afternoon dress parades at which they present five complete marches and “The Star Spangled Banner.” “Sound Off” gives the band a chance to show its musical ability as it troops the line, often with a new piece of music in its repertoire. But the Marching Band is complimented by the Jazz Ensemble, the Pep Band (which provides extra support at ball games), and the Concert Band, with pieces rang- ing from Beethoven to the Carpenters. Assisting this year is Mr. Guy Hutchins, one of the last living members of John Philip Sousa’s band, who coaches our musical groups. Able to play every instru- ment in our band and more, he also helps to repair broken instruments. The Intermediate Band 73 The Jazz Band Block C Block “C” is comprised of cadets who have lettered in a varsity sport at CMA. Our intermural athletic pro- gram includes several sports in which cadets may earn varsity letters: football, basketball, soccer, baseball, track, and golf. At right, Capt. Thorp and his crew work in the concession stand at one of our home football games. Flight Club The CMA plant adjoins Camden’s municipal airport, Woodward Field. Interest in air activity is under- standably keen among cadets and this year four stu- dents earned pilot licenses. First semester, under SFC Cayton’s tutelage, CMA student pilots appeared in four three-hour ETV fight instruction programs as they received standard ground school training. 74 Gary Parker, Bernard Elam, Charles Bodenhamer, Joe Greenburg and Tracy Jones. Chorus This is the second year that CMA has boasted a chorus performing under the direction of Captain Green. This year the group gave a Christmas program for the cadet corps and their guests while com- bined with the Bethesda Presbyterian Girls Choir and the girls’ choruses from Camden High School and the Camden Middle Schools. The CMA chorus sings contemporary, secular, and religious songs and hymns and is gaining recognition throughout the community. Debate wasn’t the only form of forensic competition this year. Several cadets excelled in dramatic interpretation, original oratory, and extemporaneous speaking. A majority of Debate Team members belong to the National Forensic League and several hold advanced degrees of honor, excellence, and distinction. Cadets also participated in the Voice of Democ- racy Radio Speech Contest and the Optimist Club Oratorical Contest. CMA presently holds second place in the Circuit standings behind A. C. Flora High School and winning out against such schools as: Spring Valley High School, Allendale-Fairfax High School, Dreher High School and others. One member of the squad is also a member of the S. C. State Debate Team. Hard work does pay off as Cadet Adelman has been offered a debate scholarship to the Uni- versity of South Carolina. Mark Lewis presenting his speech. Members of this elite group are distinguished by the special ribbon which they wear on their dress coats, and by pins bearing the DKS insignia. DKS holds meetings twice monthly to discuss cur- rent social issues and to plan outings and field trips. The movies The Lincoln Conspiracy and The Great Late Planet Earth and a guided tour of the nuclear power plant at Hartsville were highlights of this year’s excursions. Officers for 1977-78 were Peter Adelman, President; Rory Barth, Vice- President; and Edward Garbade, Secretary and Treasurer. DKS holds bi-monthly meetings in the Library. Mrs. Dallas is in charge of the library during the day, while at night during study hall, cadets on library staff hold the facility open. Staff members help cadets find books, maintain order, and keep the library in top condition. Cadets who sign up for library work learn to use the library to their advantage and earn merits for their work as well. In the stacks are a wealth of references to which Mrs. Dallas constantly adds new books each year. Besides shelves of varied fiction works, are available newspa- pers, magazines, and films. Mrs. Dallas serves a double duty as our librarian and acts as ‘ teller1' for student bank money. Our library is open during our evening study period for use by the cadets.
