From the beginning of our history, as shown here, our school has stood for high ideals among men. Our school has come a long way since its humble beginning in 1958. We are a fully accredited member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Last year we again received the honor rating with distinction during our Annual Federal Inspection. We cadets of the academy are proud of our past and prospects for the future are bright. The honor, integrity, and ideals of our school, as represented by our cadets, will stand long after our Academy turns to dust. 3 Today at CMA: working for a Ltc. Members are taught how to play an instrument and the fundamentals of music and, in following years, they are placed in the marching band. The concept behind this is to improve the quality of music at CMA. Bands like ‘'Kentucky’’ and ‘Deep South have made it possible. The Halloween Hop, which marked the first dance at which cadets and their girls danced their shoes off, was followed by the Christmas Ball and the Junior Senior Prom. The Com- mencement Dance closed the year as cadets, dates, and parents danced all evening. 13 Debate Team Cadet Adelman cross examines Tom Howard. Busy doing flows while Tom speaks. For the debaters this year's National Forensic League resolution was based on Criminal Justice. Topics included: Prison Reform, Arrest Records, Bail, and Arson. Debaters researched and worked many hours to earn the honor of debating at The Citadel in Charleston, U.S.C. at Columbia, R. J. Pete Adelman. Delta Kappa Sigma is an organization which stands for honor, integrity, leadership, and academic excellence. Cadets develop a sense of pride from within to be a member of this honorary society. DKS holds meetings to discuss social issues. One topic which holds great interest, capital punishment, motivated a visit to the Central Correctional Institute in Columbia, South Carolina, to observe and to get a better idea and understanding of what prison life is really like. DKS consists of 15 members, 10 of whom are seniors and five of whom are Juniors. Faculty Advisor William E. Risher Guard means different things to different peopfe. To members of the team, it means hard work, practice, and a lot of pride. To the other members of the corps, it means a group of guys who fall out at drill and disappear until lunch. The team has had more difficulties than usual this year — from the lack of rifles until after Christmas to teaching new members how to drill with the precision and flair that characterize the team. Even with all this we performed admirably at the Tiger Drill Meet at Clemson, bringing home four trophies. The team was judged the 3rd Place Overall Team; 2nd Fancy Platoon; 3rd Place Basic Platoon; and Greg Bruce brought home the 2nd Place Basic Individual. Even with all these accomplishments to our credit, the whole team agrees that none of it would have been possible without the support and dedication of the coach, CSM Stanley S. The select few who wait on tables in the mess hall are the fastest moving cadets on campus. This service affords them an opportunity to earn some spending money. The smoothness of the dining operation depends on the ability of the KP’s to get their tables served during, and bussed after each meal. Library Staff orary Staff: Mrs. Dallas, Sarata, Garner, Hutto, Cottle, Johnson, M. T., Brackett, Molina. This group provides cadets with reading material and reference material that they need to supplement classroom information. The library is held open each evening during the week by a student librarian. Students add the experience of cataloging books and gaining new skills. Our library is always undergoing improvement with books, films, magazines and newspapers added constantly. Rowe 19 Shakespeare Rifle Team The Varsity Rifle Team: Elam, Runyan, Erwin, Bond, Carter, H. The team fires in matches at ranges that vary from 50 feet to 100 yards. They fire in local matches, as well as international matches, national ROTG postal matches, national matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, and the International team trials at Miami, Fla. They suffered two more defeats at the hands of Lewisville and Spartanburg Day School. Once again the Highlanders were victims of a devastating Spartan attack as were the Warriors of Wildewood and the Cyclones of Carlisle Military School. The Camden-Carlisle rivalry proved to be the toughest match for the Spartans all year long as the game went into four sudden deaths. The Spartans advanced to the championship game with a 4-1 record in their conference and met head-on with Spartanburg Day again. The Spartans settled for 2nd place with a 28-8 defeat. This has been one of CMA’s finest years of football and much appreciation is due Coach Mike Starnes and Coach David Ives for their support throughout the year. 41 J. V. A yearbook is like a brick wall made up of a lot of smaller pieces. From when this book was first conceived to its publishing, many ideas and opinions went into the construction. There are many different parts to a yearbook: layouts, copy, pictures, writers, money, calls, sweat and blood. I would like to personally thank the following people for their time and effort. Matt Rodgers — Photographs Ed Garbade — Activities Dave Johnson — Sports John Marsh — Military Fred Burrier — Business Rocky Ward — Driver Towe — Driver Maj. Burton Gale — The mortar to the whole opera- tion. The staff has worked many days and nights through rain, snow, ice and Charlie's Angels. Good or bad, I thank all who contributed. But for the seniors, the 1977 Excalibur represents their last year in school. I wish the entire class all the luck in the world. Sincerely, Peter Adelman, Editor Editor Pete Adelman 1. WILSON COMPANY THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE TAKING YOUR MEASURE! Some measures are taken with a tape but the more important measures of life are taken by the people who size us up, whether it be a sweetheart, a classmate, a son or daughter, or a prospective employer. There is always some keen eye, whether we know it or not, scrutinizing the dimensions not only of our physiques but of our minds, abilities, and characters. Your training at Camden Military Academy has been designed to improve the dimensions of both your mind and character so that when you graduate it can be said that here stands a Cadet foursquare to the world, ready and eager to shoulder the responsibilities which his particular talents and abilities qualify him to assume. We measure Cadets for uniforms. Our customers measure us in their appraisal of our ability to execute a uniform contract satisfactorily. It will be a never-ending effort on our part to keep our measurements good in the eyes of Camden Military Academy. We salute the Graduating Class and wish you all Godspeed in your chosen field of endeavor. IRVING L. In adversity Let us steadfast be, And face life’s trials without fear. May love of God and love of man, Freedom, truth, and duty, to our land, Forge a bond between us, Man to man. By Col. Fanning P. Risher, Headmaster, Camden Military Academy. CADET PRAYER Heavenly Father, we beseech Thee to behold with Thy favor this, our Academy, that, through the care and instruction of the young men committed to it, Thy Name may be glorified. Be Thou guide to those upon whom rests its government; en- lighten with wisdom those who teach; and grant that we who learn may be blessed in our studies, and our characters so molded that we may evermore stand fast in Thy truth and abide in Thy love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. By The Right Reverend Albert S. Thomas, S.T.D, (1873- 1967), Sometime Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. 1. tin,.itimnnntt—t 4- May those who leave these ranks forever remember “The Academy Expects You To Be A Man”
