fcxraltbur H Burnt a “Hr” t “7B % This is only SSG. Richard B. Cayton’s second year of service to Camden Military Academy, However, during those two years he’s contributed quite a lot. In addition to his responsibilities to the Military Department and his duties of an ROTC instructor, he is also in charge of a state champion rifle team, the buses, and the Boy Scouts. He’s never too busy to come to the aid of a cadet or our school, no matter what the time. For that devotion, we the corps of cadets, dedicate this Spirit of ’76 annual to him with our wishes for a long and rewarding military career. 2 Colonel Lanning P. Risher was bom September 19, 1931. He attended public school and he graduated from Carlisle Military School. He attended The Citadel and graduated as an Army lieutenant. In 1965 Col. Risher received an M.A. in history from the University of South Carolina. Col. Risher is the headmaster of Camden Military Academy. Col. Risher oversees the entire operation of the Academy and he is a classic example of what a cadet should aspire to be. 4 I:.:nel Charles Ray White is the senior army instructor. He is in charge of all of li - military activities. Col. White is dedicated to Camden Military Academy. He willing to help any cadet. Col. White makes sure that the JROTC instruction is ied out correctly. He also helps out in disciplining cadets. From all of his : -lies and many years of experience he is a definite asset to the corps. LTC WHITE Colonel fames T. Dallas is our man in the office. Col. Dallas is the commandant of cadets. Col. Dallas advises the cadets and lets us, the corps, know about upcom- ing events. Col. Dallas is a very big asset to the smooth operation of the Academy. 5 LTC Joseph H. Parsons, a C.M.A. graduate of 1960, is now one of our distin- guished faculty members. In addition to his regular classroom responsibilities, he’s our school Adjutant. This gives him the added responsibilities of keeping up with the merits and demerits, as well as posting guard duty. Col. Parsons helps keep our school running smoothly. Congratulations on your promotion and good luck in the future. Mrs. Andy Rose has dedicated a large portion of her life to the Academy. Mrs. Rose has served as the Academy nurse for many years. Over the years we as cadets have really appreciated her hard work. We, the entire Corps of Cadets, give you, Mrs. Rose, a hugh Thank You! LTC William P. Beckham has been one of the Academy's best instructors for over 18 years. LTC Beckham served as our Mili- tary Instructor for eight years before CMA was a JROTC school. Now Col. Beckham has a full load of classes plus a driver’s education class after school. 7 Chaplain Robert G. Swager has a full day of classes, plus he is the C.M.A. debate coach. Chaplain Swager also was the director and coach of the Bicentennial Youth Debates Speech Contest Chap- lain Swager puts out an all out effort to help cadets. LTC Robert Clithero is the Academy reading instructor and the track team coach. Col. Clithero also helps out in our intramural program. He has also hosted a successful college prep reading course for cadets. 7 Chaplain William E. Crapps is the school chaplain. He is also the Public Relations Officer. Chaplain Crapps is also in charge of the Delta Kappa Sigma Honor Society. MAJ Crapps MAJ Dozier Major Roy Vandegrift is a seasoned veteran among our faculty officers. He has been with us for the past nine years. In addition to his class schedule, Major Vandegrift is in charge of the Laundry Staff, Fine Arts Club, Excalibur Staff and War Games. Major James L. Dozier, in addition to his duties as an instructor, coaches our bas- ketball team. Through his efforts the team went into the playoffs with a perfect rec- ord. MAJ Gale MAJ Vandegrift Major Burton Gale, in addition to his teach- ing duties, dedicates his own time to or- ganizing horseback riders. He is also in charge of the school newspaper and is dance advisor. 8 Chaplain ]. F. Austin is the newest member of our faculty. Even though he has only been here a short time, he has done won- ders as our new band director. CPT Austin Captain William Gettys, even though he has been at C.M.A. only 3 years, surely has turned out a well-seasoned pro. Through his everyday contact with the cadets, he has become a favorite. CPT Thorp CPT Timm Captain Robert Thorp has been with C.M.A. for 2 years, but during that time he has become a favorite among cadets. Be- sides his class schedule each day Capt. Thorp also does all the school’s grade av- erages and is in charge of transportation. Captain Doug Timm teaches and is the football and baseball coach. Capt. Timm dedicates a large portion of his day to the corps. 9 Mrs. Dallas Mrs. Anne Dallas is our school librarian. She works very hard to try to fill everyone’s needs, through newspapers, books, magazines, and films. Mrs. Dallas’ work is never done and we of the Excalihur staff thank her for her never ending work to help improve our school. Mrs. Tommie Pylant has dedicated more of her life here on our campus than any other member of our staff. Mrs. Pylant has been the Academy secretary for 18 years. We hope she’s going to be here another 18 years. Mrs. Davis Mrs. Bessie Davis is our school dietician. She works seven days a week to bring us the meals we all enjoy, though she doesn’t receive a whole lot of credit. We of the Excalibur staff thank her and her staff. 10 Mr. Frank Brown has dedicated a large portion of his life to C.M.A. Mr. Brown is the Academy barber and night security guard. Over the years Mr. Brown has done a very worthy service to the Academy. Mr. Norman Caulder is the Academy maintenance supervisor. This year Mr. Caulder and his men have painted almost all of the buildings. They have planted new trees, and moved others. They have painted and fixed the barracks. Through their efforts we can be proud of our campus. We, the Cadet Corps appreciate your efforts this year, Mr. Caulder. 11 military Srpartmrnt CSM Stanley S. Staley. This is CSM Staley’s sixth year of service to C.M.A, He has many responsibilities. Among them head of the supply room, the faculty adviser to the honored James F. Risher guard, and a ROTC instructor. Even though he tried to act rough, he’s like a father to all the cadets. We can still hear him say, “When in doubt, salute.” We of the Excalibur staff salute you, sir. C.M.A.’s “Man of the Year” SSG Richard B. Cayton. SSG Cayton is the only active United States Army member at Camden Military Academy. At these meetings the Scouts are working on skill awards. Skill awards are necessary to receive the tenderfoot badge. Tenderfoot is the first of five ranks in scouting. The skill awards range from Camping to Community Living to Swimming. The troop leaders do the instructing and this is a good time to develop leadership skills. A Troop Meeting In February the troop went on an overnight camping trip. The troop hiked out to a Boy Scout campsite. They had to clear the area of wood and twigs and set up the camp. They set up plastic tents, prepared their patrol campfires. Once they were set- tled they set out learning certain skills necessary to camping. They had classes in Totem-Chip, Knife and Axe skills, cooking and first aid. For the first troop campout all the Scouts thoroughly enjoyed themselves. 74 The Troop Camping School Activities Camden Military Academy’s Intramural program. 75 Honors 1375- 1373 In the 1975-76 school year Camden Military Academy has earned many honors. Besides the school honors there were numerous individual accomplishments. We would like to congratulate our school and these cadets for their work in making Camden Military Academy a distin- guished school. Col. Lanning P. Risher was elected President of the national Association of Military Colleges and Schools. This year Camden Military Academy is also re- ceiving our re-evaluation from the Southern As- sociation of Colleges and Schools. On April 8,1976, Camden Military Academy had its Annual Federal Inspection and, through everyone's efforts, we hope to be rated once again “An Honor Unit with Distinction.” This year Camden Military is glad to announce that they had formed a Boy Scout Troop headed by SSG Cayton, Maj. Vandegrift and Capt. Thorp. A number of cadets enjoy their meetings and campouts. The Spartan Rifle Team has won the South Carolina State championship for the second year in a row. They have also won the South Carolina JROTC state championship. We are also proud to announce that through SSG Cayton and the team’s efforts they have earned third place in JROTC national championships. The school awards have been numerous but we would also like to congratulate the many indi- vidual accomplishments. Cadet Bond is the high scorer on our rifle team with a 260. Cadet P. M. Garbade Is the high prone scorer on our rifle team with a 98 out of 100. Dave was a consistent high jumper all year with his efforts cul- minating at 5' 10 . High jump — David Johnson Gordon and Bradley pace themselves for the final kick. Gordon smashed CMA’s two mile record by 20 sec- onds, completing the journey in 11 min. 21 sec. Long distance running — Gordon, Bradley Wow! That’s a funny way to throw a frisbee. Atkinson has the technique down pat as he shows his form. Discus — Atkinson 89 CMA’s Baseball Team CMA’s baseball team has improved from past years. The coaching of Coach Timm holds the team together. Also the airtight infield, and the spaceout outfield, contribute their skills. This year the Spartans will go to a championship playoff. It’s a lot more than just taking pictures and pasting them on paper. Pictures must be taken, layout sheets turned in, copy sheets drawn out, pictures stamped and tagged, and copy written about each activity. This takes a lot of hard work, which is done by our staff in spare time and late at night. For the time they spent I would like to give my thanks. I would also like to say thanks to Pete Adelman who was always around and did my share of the work, as well as his when I had other obligations. There were also a lot of people who weren’t of the staff who deserve a lot of credit for the help they gave us. Those people are: Cadets Lewis, M. N., who did all our typing; Carter, H. V. and Durham, who did all of our drawings; and Bentson, B. F., who did all our lettering; last but not least, our faculty advisor, Major Roy Vandegrift, without whose help we would never have completed the annual. He was always around to help solve impos- sible problems and the times when we felt like quitting, he provided us with just the right words to get us going again, plus all the free time he spent with us and all the headaches he suffered as the deadline approached. I owe him a special thanks. For most of you this is just anotherExcalibur, but for 3 6 seniors this is their last, and to each and every senior I would like to wish the best of luck and I hope that all your plans for the future become reality. 96 Jeff Johnson Editor ADAMS, ARLYN ACIE, JR.
