It gives them a chance to make their own decisions and do things for themselves without having mother or father there to do it for them. One's sophomore year is the half way point in high school. The sub-freshmen are in the foothills, and the seniors are on the peak. As we go, the mountain gets steeper, but by the same token, we become stronger. The Academy is a fully accredited member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, offering preparatory work in grades 8—12. These chosen few have distinguished themselves throughout their attendance at the academy. One of the privileges of this elite group is the Officers' Lounge, where they may go to relax and ease the burdens of responsibility. 44 LTC TOMMY WALL The non-commissioned officers are the backbone of the battalion. They help the officers to perform their jobs. They hold positions of Sergeant of the Guard, and Officer of the Guard. The NCO'sare composed of the ranks of corporal to command sergeant major. This board, composed of the Battalion Commander and Executive Officer, and all Cadet Captains, and guided by our Assistant Commandant, LTC William P. Beckham, is the judicial committee which reviews any serious violation of the cadet regulations. All evidence and witnesses pertaining to the case are brought before the council. A verdict is then submitted to the Headmaster for approval. Since this council possesses unlimited authority in the expedition of these matters, it is essential that its members have the quality of fairness. 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 57 We, the EXCALIBUR Staff of 1972, would like to express our appreciation to a person who has given many hours of his time to the publication of the EXCALIBUR. '72 EXCALIBUR STAFF ACADEMIC COMMITTEE 58 MAJOR ROY VANDEGRIFT III The Cadet Corps of Camden Military Academy takes great pride in dedicating the 1972 edition of the EXCALIBUR to MAJOR ROY VANDEGRIFT. MAJ Vandegrift plays quite a varied role as a faculty officer here at the Academy. Besides teaching, he heads our Fine Arts Club, he is head of the Revolutionary War re-enactment group, and faculty advisor to the EXCALIBUR. The biggest problem we can find with MAJ Vandegrift is the fact that he is determined to find out who this annual is dedicated to! Risher, has been missing from our campus. Illness has necessitated his being confined to the hospital for the year. His philosophy, his zest for life, and his stories of human nature have been heartwarming to the cadets. His many and various experiences in life especially those involving the education of young people have been well-springs of knowledge from which he draws his stories. For all of your services to Camden Military Academy, Cot. Risher, we thank you. 88 COLONEL L. P. RISHER Colonel Lanning P. Risher was born on September 19, 1931, son of our president, Colonel James F. Risher. His birthplace was Bamberg, S, C. He attended public schools in Bamberg, Carlisle Military School, and The Citadel, where he graduated in 1952. In 1953 he entered the Army as a second lieutenant. In 1955 he completed his military obligation and received an honorable discharge with the rank of first lieutenant. He then returned to Carlisle where he became a teacher. In 1958 Colonel Risher came to Camden to take the job of Headmaster of Camden Military Academy. In 1965 he received an M.A. in history from the University of South Carolina. Colonel Risher has put forth much effort to make Camden Military Academy the honor-rated school it is today.
