STALEY The 1970-71 EXCALIBUR staff takes great pride in dedicating the 1971 annual to Command Sgt. Major Stanley S. Staley, U. S. Army (retired) presently employed by Camden Military Academy as assistant senior army instructor. C.S.M. Staley is, without a doubt, the most understanding (and outstanding) person the cadets have had the honor of knowing this year. We cannot convey our appreciation, respect, admiration and gratitude to C.S.M. Staley better than by dedi- cating to him this, the 1971 edition of EXCALIBUR for a job well done. 4 ■ To many, iit is con|usion, excitement, sjd- A ness, joy, frustration, success. VAN WEBBER Advisor The time has finally come for the class of “71“ to pack up their belongings for the last time of their stay at C.M.A. They will leave with only memories of the past and the knowledge which the school has be- stowed upon them. For many, C.M.A. has changed their lives so as to have a most important bearing on the future. As each senior leaves the academy, he can say that he has done his part to preserve the sovereignty of the school and the trials of life. Only the future will tell whether he will triumph over life’s complexities or fail. The road ahead is a rough one, but he can overcome and conquer his problems if he supplies the needed force that can be drawn from his experiences. Graduates of the class of 1971, may you truly stand out in your accepting the challenge and mantle of responsibility of adulthood. CLASSES SENIOR CLASS 9 VINCENT J. BARONE (Vfnney) Company A. Nearing the end of three years of work, anticipation builds to the unveiling of their senior year—col- lege boards—A.C.T.—writing to college, and experiencing the anxiety of waiting. Waiting for what? For all the ends to string together finally in a web of victory and each one’s individualism. The junior class extends its best wishes to the men of 1971 in hopes that they might be as efficient, if not more so. Here’s to a good summer of our final year. Again best wishes to the seniors and all the other cadets at C.M.A. 21 Shades of yesteryear ... Is this our Ralphie? Hollywood bound? The life of a sophomore is a good example of an experience. First one must set a basis on which to work, then, when one has classified and filed the accumulated knowledge one can proceed to the more compli- cated problems. The sophomore does have his breaks during the school year to take it easy. After all, hundreds in C.M.A s past years have met the challenge and trampled it in the dirt. So, if the sophomore feels that he is op- pressed with work, he should look back into C.M.A s history and see the example of those who survived their sophomore year. As a final word, summer is near and after ali 1973 is not too far in the future. We would like to wish all the luck in the world to the seniors of 7 I in their future years as they leave us to carry on the past traditions and lead as men; Goodby and thanks for the guiding hand and the reference to your past experiences. 25 Donald W. Some words of wisdom from the “old” pros; keep working and get ready to work. The next four years are the testing and final preparatory years before college. College? Who said college? That is still in the future for us, too. We wish the class of 71 the best of luck in their future years and everybody else of C.M.A. as they walk the hallowed halls, a fun and safe summer and we will see you next year. The sub-freshmen, believe it or not, will someday be the backbone of our school. The cadet corps will always be supplied with a few sub-freshmen and they will always be expected to pull a double load when the time arises. This class will always have to obtain experi- ence by gaining knowledge by everday occurrences and retain it for their fresh- man year. RECREATION ROOM STAFF An important part of C.M.A. life is the recreation room supervised by Captain Gerd Becker. CHERE Advisor LIBRARY STAFF The purpose of this group is to provide the cadets with the reading material and reference material that they need to supplement the information they get in their classrooms. The library is held open in the evenings during the week by a student librarian. This year the cadets have had the experience of cataloging the hundreds of new editions added to the shelves. The experiences these cadet librarians accumulate should prove invaluable in their future years of schooling. fepr OFFICERS: Brown, President; Pearson, Vice-Presi- dent; Dobson, Secretary-Treasurer 53 KNEELING: Stacks, B, C,, Dalton, Parker, LeMaster, S. Here at C.M.A., especially during the warm months, the pool is a welcome respite from the day’§ grueling activities. The pool is one of the most popular spots on campus. Guardians of the deep, the swimming pool staff must be ever on the alert for the time when an overly-exuberant cadet might overtax himself. When and if this happens and a HELP! ! is heard, it is, “guards to the rescue.” LAUNDRY STAFF CAPT. ROY VANDEGRIFT Faculty Advisor Mondays and Thursdays are special days in the lives of the cadets . . . Those are laundry days. Cadet Robert Howard capably dispenses the laundry on blue and white days. GYM STAFF Without the capable care given to the gym by Rollie Huffstetler, we wouldn’t have the facilities available to us in proper order when we needed them. There is more to the mainte- nance of the gym than meets the eye. It is a position that re- quires an abundance of energy and a constitution of iron. This we have in the person of Rollie. ROLLIE HUFFSTETLER COLONEL RAY WHITE Faculty Advisor 55 LEFT TO RIGHT: Ted Edwards, Richard Joseph, Dan Dunbar, Eddie Delaney, Tom Langston, Robert Murphy, Allen Walters. ARMORY STAFF 1970-1971 This group of dedicated young men maintain the security and condition of the weapons of the corps in the armory. They are responsible for the handing out and receiving the weapons. When a rifle has a faulty or broken part, it is this staff’s duty to see that it is repaired. Since they are responsible In- directly to the military at Fort Jackson, this is an extremely important and integral part of military training at C.M.A. K. P.'s The select few who wait on tables in the mess hall are the fastest moving cadets on campus. An opportunity to earn some spending money is afforded these cadets. The smooth- ness with which a meal is served depends upon the ability of the K.P s to get their tables served, and bussed after the meal. M rs. CAPTAIN ROY VANDEGRIFT Faculty Advisor JOSEPH BROWN President FINE ARTS This club is primarily for those cadets who have a particular knack for creativity. Many facets of artistic endeavors are pursued. There is a general meeting once a month. At this time itiner- aries are planned, projects are discussed, and club business is taken care of. Ceramics, oil painting, handicraft, sculpturing, and other points of fine art are among the many projects undertaken by this group. Assisting Capt. Vandegrift with this organization are Mrs. White and Mrs. Risher. Throughout the year, trips are taken to various museums and art exhibitions. Fine Arts visited by parents during open house. COMMAND SGT.-MAJOR STANLEY STALEY Faculty Advisor THE JAMES F. RISHER GUARD Every afternoon, the booming voice of Sergeant Orville Lee Campbell can be heard shouting orders as he puts his drill team through their paces. It is a spectacle to behold as these cadets go through their drill with precision timing. Sunday mornings these vehicles are em- ployed fully by the cadets as their transportation RALPH HEMPTON to the various churches in town. When the corps goes away to sport contests, it is important that we have competent drivers to get us there. The entire student body has at one time or another relied upon the services of these cadets that make up the Bus Crew. BOB BLACKMAN A birds-eye view of C.M.A. FLIGHT CLUB This small group of “air” minded young men utilize their spare time soaring among the clouds. Both teams played conservative ball. Spartanburg Day—7 C.M.A.—10 (away) Guy Mercer’s 30-yard field goal in the third quarter enabled the Spartans to win their third game of the season. Christ School—42 C.M.A.—24 (home) Bruce Bivins’ touchdown and Dennis Bivins’ inter- cepted pass covering 35 yards for a touchdown enabled C.M.A.’s Spartans to lead in the third quarter. Christ School exploded with two quick T.D.s to make it 42-24. Ingram had 100 yards rushing. Bruce Bivins and “Stick” Anderson played a good defensive game. Christ School went on to be undefeated and be- come the independent champions. 73 Riverside Mil. Academy—12 C.M.A.—36 (home) Victory number four was at the expense of the Riverside Military Academy from Gainesville, Georgia. Touchdown passes were received by Dills, Bruce Bivins, and Glen Ribelin. The Spartans found themselves on the top side of a 36-12 score. Oak Ridge—0 C.M.A. 19 (away) The Spartans traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina, to take on the Crimson Tide of Oak Ridge Military Institute. Rick Barton’s passing and Bob Ingram’s rushing proved too much for the Oak Ridge team. Dennis Bivins and Jerry Dula stood out on defense. Asheville School for Boys—14 C.M.A.—0 (away) Playing in a sea of mud, the Spartans were upset by the Asheville Blues in Asheville for their final loss of the season. Carlisle Military Academy—6 C.M.A.—28 After being shocked by a quick Carlisle touch- down, the Spartans roared back to crush their arch rivals, Carlisle. In so doing, Camden Military was able to defeat Carlisle for two successive years for the first time in this interschool rivalry. This was also the first time the Spartans were able to defeat the Golden Cyclones on their own field. Tremendous performances were turned in by Bobby Ingram with 165 yards rushing, and Doug Dills, who thrilled the crowd with a 70 yard pass interception for a touchdown. 74 iw Hindered by lack of experience our underdog team never-the-less gave their all in every game. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY COLONEL J. F. RISHER For most of this year a familiar and beloved personality. Colonel James F. Risher, was missing from our campus. Illness necessitated his being confined to his home in Bamberg for most of the year. His philosophy, his zest for life, and his stories involving human nature are heart- warming to the cadets. His many and various experiences in life—especially those involving the education of young people—are well-springs of knowledge from which he draws his stories. We sincerely hope that his recovery is speedy and complete so that we may once again benefit from hearing his little glimpses of life. We, the cadet corps, send our prayers and our best wishes to you, Colonel Risher, and say, “Hurry back, we miss you.” 9J COLONEL LANNING RISHER MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER Time is the great common denominator of life. Each of us has twenty- four hours in every day. The beauty we see, the joy we know, the deeds we accomplish, and the love we show are all dependent upon how we use these twenty-four hours. In short, our use of time determines success or failure in life. A little poem from the ancient Sanskrit beautifully expresses this thought. I hope you will think of it often in the years ahead. SALUTATION TO THE DAWN Look well to this day, For it is life, the very life of life. In its brief course Lie all the verities and realities of your existence; The bliss of growth, The glory of action, The splendor of beauty. For yesterday is but a dream, And tomorrow is only a vision. But each today well-lived Will make each yesterday a dream of happiness And each tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day, For such is the Salutation to the Dawn. 92 The worthwhile things in life are achieved only through hard work and self-sacrifice. The self discipline you have gained at Camden Military Academy will permit you to reach high goals that you have set for yourself. I congratulate each of you for the outstanding job you have done all year and wish for each of you success in your future endeavors. “Our God and soldier we alike adore When at the brink of ruin, not before; After deliverance both alike requited Our God forgotten, and our soldiers slighted” —Rudyard Kipling. LT. COLONEL JAMES T. DALLAS Commandant LT, COLONEL CHARLES R. WHITE Assistant Headmaster When a cadet is unhappy, the source of this unhappiness can usually be traced to one or both of two areas—grades and conduct. My advice to the young man is to get busy, to put a tremendous amount of effort into his school work. After all, this is an educational institution and that’s why all of us are here. When most of his time is used in studying, his grades are going to improve and there will be little time left for him to get involved in’ misconduct. Therefore, work is the antidote to both problems as it so often is to even larger problems in life. Shakespeare has said; “This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man ” My advice then is: Be honest with yourself. Get busy. Do what your present occupation is—study! MAJOR WILLIAM BECKHAM, JR.
