The cadet corps of Camden Military Academy could never find someone to take the place of “Mom”. There is not a cadet at Camden who does not have a place to go when they need someone to talk to. Many times a cadet will come across a prob- lem that requires a mother’s understanding. Mrs. Rose always finds a solution for all of her “boys”. Sometimes it seems home is very far away or maybe even a part of the past but it is always comforting to know that there is someone who understands a young man. Having a son of her own, “Mom” is not always as “soft as butter” because among her many qualities she knows that firmness is essential in maintaining respect from her many admirers. Many times we have let her down but no one can say Mrs. Rose has ever betrayed our trust. Not only is Mrs. Rose our “Mom,” she is also a top-notch nurse. From patching up the Spartans to the shot I never felt, she has continued her dedicated practice here to the highest of her ability. She handles every case tactfully from the inspection we didn’t want to go to, to the time we were really sick. Andy Rose works hard, some- times to the point of exhaustion. Everything seems to get put on Mrs. Rose, from a home- sick cadet to the Tea dance. Even though she faces every day with the responsibility of two hundred and forty young men, she always does more than she is required to do. Because of her efforts and positive attitude of what she wants done, she has brought the infirmary up to the highest standard that she possibly can. Because of “Mom's” understanding, pro- ficiency in her profession, and diligent work, we of the senior class take pride in dedi- cating this NINETEEN SEVENTY EXCALI- BUR to MRS. ANDY ROSE. 3 FOREWORD The EXCALIBUR Staff of 1969-70 hopes to give a vivid and explicit picture of this past school year at Camden Military Acad- emy. It is our sincere wish that the contents within these pages bring back memories of a year well spent. We have learned many things that can not be found in books. The relationship among us all in our triumphs and our defeats, our joy and despair, our personal feelings, and our sense of moral duty has offered us all an education that could not have been acquired at any place except Camden Military Academy. In future years we will look upon the people who made this year and feel a sense of pride that we have been, and always will be, a living part of CAMDEN. TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration....................................7 Classes ... .............................12 Activities.......................................43 ROTC Program.....................................57 Beauties........................................ 77 Sports...........................................82 ADMINISTRATION COL. JAMES F. RISHER President For twelve years Col. Lanning P. Risher, our Headmaster, has worked hard to make CMA one of the best military schools in the nation. He has built up the school from 87 cadets in 1958-59 to a full capacity of 245 cadets in 1969-1970. His efforts have been untiring, and the excellence of the school in its many phases this year is largely due to this effort. No problem is too small or too large to be carried to the Colonel’s office, and we know that we will have a sympathetic, understanding, and impartial hearing. A noted citizen of South Carolina, a man to look up to, is Col. James F. Risher. In 1958 he founded Camden Military Acad- emy, after teaching and acting as Head- master of Carlisle Military School. Through his various actions over the years he has helped to influence the lives of many young men. His efforts in the educational field are full of sacrifices. Thus we can truly say Col. James F. Risher’s life is one for a cadet to live up to. COL LANNING P. RISHER Headmaster ADMINISTRATION Col. James T. Dallas is the Commandant of Cadets. Through his past twelve years of service here at Camden Military Acad- emy he has striven to make the academy excel in all phases of its activities with each passing year. We commend him on his contributions, and we know that he will al- ways be there to help all of us. Col. James T. Dallas, a great educator, now striving to help better the lives of all cadets. LT. COL JAMES T. DALLAS Commandant Major William P. Beckham is the assistant Commandant of Cadets, This man has known each cadet and what he has done this past year, as years before. His guidance and constant bearing on our behavior has certainly helped us in the development of our lives as responsible citizens. Through various trials and tribulations Major Beck- ham becomes more versed every day in the knowledge of a cadet and his problems. 'u MAJOR WILLIAM P. The Senior class of 1970 has finished its final course of education. We have learned much and will benefit in later years. We, the senior class, have very much to be proud of. It was our year that Carlisle was beaten the worst ever (52-0) in football. We beat them in every major sport. Our senior year is the year when we had the best I.G. in- spection in the history of the school. The gym was completed during our senior year of 1970. It was our football team that car- ried fifteen seniors. Several track and field records were broken by seniors also. If we could change it—we wouldn't in any way for this is OUR YEAR the year of NINETEEN SEVENTY. 13 SENIORS MARK GILLOTTE Friendliest SUPERLATIVES STEVE WURST Class Clown MARSHALL FOWLER Most Conceited HARRY BALLARD Fickle Finger of Fate Award MIKE JENNINGS Biggest Bulfshooter 15 GERALD MONSOUR ASKER (Jerry) JAMES LEONARD ANDERSON, JR. The Class of ’73 has had a very good year. We shared in all the activities that took place. We see the excitement as seniors approach their last days at Camden, The Freshman Class can imagine themselves in four years when we graduate. Through the guidance of our cadet leaders and faculty we are quickly preparing to move up in the ranks of our academy. We hail the passing of this school year, 1970, as the most eventful for the Freshman Class. 37 FRESHMEN Donald W, Adams John A. Bryant Robert C. Bullard Brent E. Burkhartt Stanley L Carnes John C. Cadets are sworn in before they come be- fore the board. The honor council demands the truth in all testimony. It is the privilege of a cadet not to testify against himself. However, if a cadet chooses to give testi- mony that may tend to incriminate himself he must tell the truth and nothing but the whole truth. Since men testifying in an honor council must take an oath upon The Holy Bible, it is the opinion of the council that anyone who fails to tell the truth be- fore the board does not qualify morally and will be dismissed from school. Major Beckham is in charge of the honor council. He has been head of the honor council for twelve years. The honor council investigates only extremely serious infrac- tions of the rules and regulations. The council mainly concerns itself with offences that tend toward matters that can be injuri- ous to the welfare of the cadet corps in general or is morally deficient by the code of our cadet corps. The honor council consists of Major Beck- ham, the battalion commander, the adju- tant, and all four company commanders. The cadet officers that are on the board aid Major Beckham in investigating matters brought before the council. A I V JEFFREY WALTZ President GAIL MINCHOW LEFT TO RIGHT: Capt. Michael Jennings, Capt. More people are members than last year; which shows even more improvement. The band hopes to be even greater next year by crystallizing the items they have learned this year. We are very proud of their rapid development here and look forward to many more years of their contributions. 47 THE ADJUTANT It has been the primary concern of the Adjutant staff to report factual and concise news to you throughout the year. The Adjutant Staff hopes that it succeeded in this task. The staff feels that it has left a heritage of good news reporting behind it and it was intended this year to give the subscribers of the paper a wider scope of events. They also wanted to leave the school with an established paper for forthcoming news. We salute the senior members of the Adjutant. 48 DELTA KAPPA SIGMA LEFT TO RIGHT: Jerry Raynovic, Jeff Waltz, Max Fine, Arnold Levine, James Anderson, James McLain. Major Beckham and his wife pick the gifts for these young people. The children at the home range in ages from infant to teenagers. Major Beckham spends a considerable amount of time selecting the gifts. Somehow he always manages to find just the right gift for every child. The day of the Christmas party the entire cadet corps seems to pick up the true Christmas spirit and everyone leaves feeling a little taller. 55 INFIRMARY There are no words which can express our appreciation to our In- firmary. We the cadets at Camden Military Academy salute Mrs. Vera Rose for her concern and efforts for the cadets. We hope that she will have many years ahead with us here. 56 57 One of the highlights of the year was the visit to the Academy of Col. Jerry M. Sage, Deputy Chief of Staff, ROTC Affairs, Third U. S. Army. After being met by an honor guard and reviewing the battalion. Col Sage spoke to the corps of his experiences and beliefs. The narrating of many of his hair-raising exploits behind the German lines during World War II revealed to the cadets the origin of the nickname the Germans had for him, “The Cooler King ’ R.O.T.C. STAFF LEFT TO RIGHT: LTC Charles R. White, SAf; SFC Howard Hill, instructor: and SSG Richard Kel- ley, Instructor. Junior ROTC was designed specifically to give young men training and experience in the art of organizing, motivating and leading others. This includes the development of self-discipline, physical stamina and bearing. These things are important qualities in the development of a cadet. Through what he is taught the cadet is a well-rounded individual ready for his place in life. R.O.T.C. STAFF 61 62 GAIL MINCHOW SASH AND SWORD THE CADET OFFICER Leadership qualities are not inborn The ability to lead and inspire others to follow is learned. Training, experience, and the acceptance of responsibility all contribute to the process of making a cadet officer. The cadet officer is a man of self discipline, a gentleman, a leader and most of all the man who is prepared for the future and its challenges. In the quest for the men to lead and guide, these men have been chosen for the characteristics they have for leadership 63 i ii? NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS FIRST SERGEANTS, LEFT TO RIGHT: Jim Tice, Tommy Wall, Ray McCune, Milo Thompson. The Non-Commissioned officer is a cadet who has proven himself reliant. His is to be in direct contact with his men. Thus the N.C.O. proves that he has the leadership traits necessary for the cadet officer. The cadet’s performance as a Non-Com contributes to his climbing the ladder to a commission. These men have proven their responsiveness to constituted authority thus they attained the ranks of the non-commis- sioned officer. 64 COLOR GUARD At Camden Military Academy the cadet corps takes pride in our colors. We feel it an honor to respect our flag as our symbol of justice and liberty. ARMORY STAFF LEFT TO RIGHT: Stokes, Lewis, Dean, N. This was the worst beating either team has ever re- ceived in the history of this rivalry. Ending the season with a 5 and 6 record it all seemed like an undefeated season after the Carlisle game.
