Alma Mater Mighty Camden, we salute thee now And may this be our eternal vow, That the truths held dear By thy code austere Shall thunder in our ear. In adversity Let us steadfast be, And face life’s trials without fear. May love of God and love of man, Freedom, truth, and duty to our land, Forge a bond between us, Man to man. By Col. Lanning P. Risher, Headmaster, Camden Military Academy. CAMDEN MILITARY ACADEMY CAMDEN, S. C. BRIAN K. JONES Editor WILLIAM J. KONZNY Business Manager CAPT. H. FRAZIER STEELE, JR. With excitement we visualize the unknown adventure of our adult future; yet, with sadness, we see the passing of this dynamic phase of our development. Our progress this year has so become a part of our lives that it will subconsciously guide us always. Our con- scious memories will be forever sharpened by the EXCALIBUR 1967. For seven years, Mr. Russell has been serving the school both officially as the proprietor of the Canteen and unofficially as the Father Confessor and errand-runner to the C1 boys . For your devotion to our needs and wants for all these years, we dedicate the EXCALIBUR of 1967 to you, Mr. E. Beckham Russell We Are Advertis d by Our Loving Friends —Shakespeare. 5 Philosophy of Education Education is far more than the simple learning and retaining of a mass of facts and figures . , . ... It is more accurately described as a process of growth, a process which de- velops not only the intellect but also the personality of an individual so that he will be equipped to live a successful life in this rapidly changing world. 8 muz TP.--” , . . That priceless gift, the mind, must be nurtured through instruction, frequent study, reading and attention to detail. 9 . , , The spiritual qualities must be strengthened to guide the thoughts of the acute mind and the steps of the strong body down the paths of manliness, un- selfishness, duty, and service, to the great satisfaction of having not only made a living, but having lived successfully a life. “The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time. —Jefferson, . . . It is these spiritual characteristics, more than any other, by which the Great Com- mandant of the Universe adjudges each life a success or failure. 10 “I want this school to be the best preparatory school in South Carolina, if not in all the South.” So declares Col. Canning P. Risher when he speaks about Camden Military Academy, of which he is Headmaster. For eight years he has been working toward that goal, and with his determi- nation and education, nobody doubts that he will make it. He is well qualified for the position he holds, having been weaned on life in a military school. Besides graduating from Carlisle Military School, he gained a degree from The Citadel and went back to Carlisle to teach after a tour of duty in the Infantry. He came to CMA in 1958 and started with a total enrollment of 95 cadets, from which start he has progressed to the present student body of 240. Truly, with a continuation of this progress, his dream will come true. The Administration When we hear someone say “Building men for the future of America,” we instantly think of the man who has made this ideal his life’s work. Col. James F. Risher, our President, has been molding boys’ characters since he first started teaching at Carlisle Military School in 1924. He enlarged his opportunities in 1939 by purchasing the school, and again in 1958 by acquiring CMA. It can truly be said that South Carolina is in his debt for “making men out of boys” and pro- viding them with an education they might never have received. II LT. COL. JAMES T. Be Thou guide to those upon whom rests its government; enlighten with wisdom those who teach; and grant that we who learn may be blessed in our studies, and our characters so molded that we may evermore stand fast in Thy truth and abide in Thy love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen, Btj The Right Reverend Albert S. Thomas, S.T.D., Retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina.
