CAMDEN MILITARY ACADEMY PRESENTS . . . EXCALIBUR 1 1963 DEDICATED TO MR. ZELLIE WILLIAMS We The Members of the class Of 1963 dedicate our yearbook to a man who we all admire and re- spect. “General” as most of us call him has a hard and often unrewarding job. This is our way of letting him know his work does not go un-noticed. COLONEL JAMES F. RISHER PRESIDENT Colonel James F. Risher was born in Hampton County, S.C. and graduated in the class of 1911, from The Citadel In 1924 he went to Carlisle Military School to teach. In 1928 he was made Headmaster, and purchased the school in 1939. In 1958 he purchased Camden Military Academy, and he now serves as Presi- dent of Carlisle and Camden. The Corps of Cadets ap- preciates his influence on our lives, and we are proud to be associated with this great man. COLONEL LANNING P. RISHER HEADMASTER Colonel Lanning P. Risher was bom September 19, 1931, the son of our President, Colonel James F. Risher. He attended the public schools of Bamberg, S.C. and Carlisle Military School. In 1955 he came out of the Army with the rank of 1st. Lieutenant of Infantry. He taught at Carlisle for three years prior to coming here as Headmaster in 1958. For the past five years Col. Risher has put forth much effort to make Camden Military Academy a top grade school. We of the EXCALIBUR staff salute you, Colo- nel Risher. 3 FOREWORD We look now with mixed emotions upon the school year 1962-63. With excitement we visualize the unknown adventures of our adult future, yet with sadness we see the passing of this dynamic phase of our development. Our progress this year has so become a part of our lives that it will sub- consciously guide us always. Our conscious memo- ries will be forever sharpened by the EXCALI- BUR of 1963. The speaker for the occasion was Rev. W. H. Smith of Ware Shoals, S. C., father of James E. Smith, a member of the graduating class. Rev. Smith de- livered a beautiful and inspiring sermon, choosing as his text 2nd Chronicles, 1: 7-12, pointing out that although God had promised to give Solomon anything he wanted, he chose wisdom to judge his people rather than wealth, honor, re- venge on his enemies, or long life. A vocal solo, “Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled,” was rendered by Mrs. James T. Dallas, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Hollis Holford. At 4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon a dress parade was held on the parade field, at which time Co. “A” was awarded the colors for Honor Company of the Year. This parade was followed by a reception in the dining hall for the cadets and their guests. 82 GRADUATION Commencement Exercises were held on the Academy Campus at 11:00 AM, Mon- day, 3 June for a class of 60 graduates. After the advance of the colors, the invo- cation was given by Rev. E, E. Glenn, D. D., pastor of the Lyttleton Street Metho- dist Church in Camden. This was followed by the presentation of medals by Lt. Col. James T. Dallas, the Commandant, and the singing of the Alma Mater. Col. Lanning P. Risher, Headmaster, introduced the speaker for the day, the Hon. F. Hall Yarborough, a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from Orangeburg. Mr. Yarborough presented a stirring lesson on “the strait and narrow path ’ interspersed with humorous comments. Col. James F. Risher, President, presented the diplomas, after which the general orders were read. This was fol- lowed by the Cadet Prayer and the benediction.
