Camden Military Academy THE — EXCALIBUR of 1962 C. H. McTeer Editor Col. James F. Fisher Let me live. Oh Mighty Master, Such a life that men may know. Tasting triumph and disaster joy and not too much of woe. Let me love and fight and laugh, And when I’m beneath the clover, Let this be my epitaph: Here lies one who took his chances In this busy world of men. Battled luck and circumstances, Fought and fell, and fought again. Won sometimes but did no crowing. Lost sometimes but didn’t wail. Took his beatings but kept going. Never let his courage fail. He was fallible and human, Therefore loved and understood By both his fellow men and women, Whether good or not so good. Kept his courage undiminished. Never laid down on a friend. Played the game until it finished. Lived a hero to the end. —Unknown— 2 Foreword This is the most difficult time of the year. The seniors must make plans that will probably affect their whole future. The thoughts enter our minds if during the phases of the last four years we have prepared ourselves for the unscreening that lies ahead. Whatever phase of life that we turn to we will al- ways look back on our Alma Mater with remembrances of the good times as well as the bad ones. Looking back we can see ourselves growing into manhood and we know that we are well on the road of life. We will never forget the'guidance and kindness given to us by our school. They were a great help in the molding of our character. Our hearts will have a tinge of sorrow forever. Contents Page 7 . . . Fall Seniors Football Page 31 .. . Summer Baseball Track Graduation Dedication Around campus we are always glad to see this big man with a big smile. He is a great coach in the class room as well as on the baseball diamond and football field. He has the driving desire to win, and this year turned out the best football team ever. Al- though he is the coach, he is the sparkplug of the team. His adage is best of all; “Its not whether you win or lose but it’s how you play the game, but if you play the game right you won't lose ’ The Senior Class would like to dedicate this year’s Excalibur TO Coach Harold C. Bullard. 4 Colonel Canning P. Pis her Colonel Lanning Risher was bom on September 19, 1931, the son of our President, Colonel James F. Risher. His birthplace was in Bamberg, S.C. Be Thou guide to those upon whom rests its gov- ernment; enlighten with wisdom those who teach; and grant that we who learn may be blessed in our studies, and our characters so molded that we may ever- more stand fast in Thy truth and abide in Thy love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN Written by the Right Reverend Albert S. Thomas, S.T.D., Retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina The Block ‘C, Club composed of lettermen from the four varsity teams, was a very active organization this year. In the fall they purchased a 16 mm analyst pro- jector to be used in improving our football play. The members worked all winter raising funds for this useful gift to the athletic depart- ment. Blue track warm-ups with old English lettering and UCLA shoulder strips were pur- chased in the spring. Many coaches from the entire Southeast commented on our team's uniforms as being the best looking of any high school they had seen. At the end of the year monogram T shirts with blue trim were given to every member. Also under the Block XT supervision, came the successful Field Day program. 66 All of these inovations by this club was possible only through the leadership of their officers and the hard work of all members. The club strives to advance the athletic and recrea- tion programs through their projects while at the same time inject interest and spirit into the student body. Scenes from the Block rCT party. Through the centuries since, Adam’s descendant had that sweat of brow, necessary ingredient though it may be, will alone produce poor loaves, and few. HE had learned the way to multiply his own puny efforts with the powerful engines of his own ingenuity. He has learned to reinstitute some portion of his being as capital, to employ capital ef- fectively to provide new and better tools, and with them he had fashioned a mar- gin of social gain beyond the dreams of man since the beginnings. Today, we identify this relationship of man to his labor, his capital, his tech- niques, his tools, and his dreams, as technology. And wherever technology has flourished, social gains have followed as a matter of cause and effect. Technology is the great multiplication table. It is the margin between pint and bushel, between ounce and pound, be- tween dozen and gross. In America, it is the margin between homespun and nylon, between the pot on the hearth and the eye-level oven, between root cellar and deep freeze, between plow and trac- tor., between wagon train and jet liner, and, because the means must precede the fulfillment, the margin between Lincoln’s lonely study by the dying fire and the scholarly haven of the Harvard Yard. In these achievements, men have found the way to the standards of life, of dignity, and of aspiration toward which they have struggled for centuries, with the goals always just eluding their outstretched hands. Technology pro- viding that strength, has produced the trust of energy that today we see measured in the margin of cessitym the margin of knowledge over ignorance, the margin of knowledge over fear and perhaps, in perilous times, the margin of survival over disaster. In technology’s wake have come the order of law, the amenities of culture, the tender hand of charity. For only as the head once bowed with toil can be raised up can man lift his eyes toward those broad and hopeful margins of tomorrow.
