CAMDEN MILITARY ACADEMY CAMDEN, SOUTH CAROLINA PRESENTS DEDICATION To Capt. William P. Beckham for his unfailing interest in, and untiring efforts on the part of, the activities of Camden Military Academy, we, the Senior Class, do proudly and appreciatively dedicate this, the Excalibur of 1961. In this way, we would like to represent the school as a whole in its gratitude for all his serv- ices throughout the three years he has been on the Faculty. We feel privileged and honored to have been associated with a man so understanding and devoted to helping youth find a place in life. In ilmuriam JAMES LEE BRIDWELL Academy Cadets were grieved upon hearing of the fate of a very close friend. Jimmy had received the citizenship award at his gradua- tion in June of 1960. We will remember this, his last moment with the entire Cadet Corps, as fitting. He was distinguished from the gradual ing class to be given this token cf his friendly spirit, his cooperative attitude and his willingness to work for others. Every boy affected by his life here at Camden grew through his daily contact with Bridwell. We know that he lived for a purpose and that purpose was found here at the Academy. PRESIDENT COLONEL JAMES FRANKLIN RISHER Col. James F. Risher was born in Hampton County, South Carolina, on November 26, 1889. After attending the South Carolina public schools, he completed his formal education at The Citadel in 1911. Eleven years of public school teaching ended in 1922 when he be- came an instructor at Carlisle. Becoming Head- master in 1928, Colonel Risher was able to build a school which was destined to become a leader in southern preparatory schools. The year 1958 saw Camden Military Academy be- come an even further accomplishment in his contribution to the education field. His vast ex- perience now enables him to guide the lives of the combined corps of the brother schools. Colonel Risher is known throughout the United States for his speaking ability and has traveled this year as far as Colorado. He has always been able to forego a busy schedule in order to encourage and challenge the young men in his life with his eloquent and timely parables. HEADMASTER COLONEL LANNING P. RISHER Col. banning Risher was bom on September 19, 1931, the son of our President, Col. James F. Risher. His birthplace was in Bamberg, S. C. He attended the public schools of Bamberg, Carlisle Military School, and The Citadel, where he graduated in 1952. He is now doing grad- uate work in history at the University of South Carolina. In 1953, he entered the army as a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1955, he came out of the Army with the rank of 1st Lieutenant of In- fantry. Upon completion of his active duty. Col. Risher started teaching at Carlisle. He re- mained there for three years. He then came to Camden to take the job of Headmaster. For the past three years Col. Risher has put forth much effort to make Camden Military Academy a top grade school for everyone to be proud of. It is the opinion of the cadet corps that he has done this and much more. We of the EXCALIBUR staff salute you, Col. Risher, for a job well done. -5 SCHOOL FACULTY MAJOR JAMES T. Beckham, Lewter, Van Hook, Forres Elite among the cadet groups is the Honor Council. This board, composed of all Cadet Captains and the Cadet Major, and guided by our Professor of Military Science and Tactics, is the judicial branch of our Corps of Cadets. This judicial committee reviews any serious violation of the cadet regulations. All evidence and witnesses pertaining to the case are brought before the council. A verdict is then submitted to the Headmaster for approval. Since this council possesses unlimited authority in the ex- pediency of these matters, it is essential that its members have the qualities of efficiency and fairness. 48 SASH AND SWORD LEFT TO RIGHT: Bellune, Eller, Byrum, Forrest, Van Hook, Obenschain, Jordan, Lewter, Wienges, Gardner, Dukes, D. D., Traylor, Dotterer. ABSENT: Langley, Whitlaw. If a cadet can attain the higher ranks in our school, those of the Commis- sioned Officers, he becomes a member of the Sash and Sword. As Officer-of-the-Day, these cadets have a guard detail that is in charge of the school during a twenty-four hour period. As irregularities occur on the campus this cadet makes any decision that must be made to rectify the situa- tion. This experience is most essen- tial in their training to be responsible citizens. On the judgment and ability of these men depends the success or failure of the military year. The efficiency of the school system is dependent upon these officers who have been selected on their ability to accept responsibility and to see that their men are well- trained. They have all been non-com- missioned officers and know the prob- lems that their men will face. These cadets instill in their boys a competitive company spirit. The members of this organization are leaders. 49 NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS KNEELING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Mills, Martin, Boland, Ryan, Hisle, Land, R. F., Osteen, Weston, Davis, J. O., Bailey, Littleford, Graham, Manheim, Rountree, Bower, Thomason, Buxton, Kauffman, Smith, W. P., Montjoy, Fishburne, Dahmer, Lothridge. STANDING: Blackwell, Kelly, C. W., Nuno, Smith, R. C., Holland, Gatch, Eanes, Trawick, McTeer, T. H., Fox, Ivester, Ward, deMontmollin, Hoover, Treadway, Lane, Griffiths, Norton, S. C., Hill, Workman, Phail, Rogers, McWhirter, Maloney, Brown, K, O., farman, Johnson, Minor, J. G., Harrison, Lovejoy, Napolitano, Beebe, McDonald, Minor, J, W., Moran, Grimes, Lloyd, Blake, Flynn, Robello, Hughes. ABSENT: Dukes, D. E. To many the Military is divided into two categories: those who give the orders, and those who are given the orders. But this does not include the third and largest class. These cadets are the ones who see that the orders are carried out. The Non- Commissioned Officers are important, in that they are the back- bone of our system. Their duty, Sergeant-of-the-Guard, is often hard and thankless, but the training is beyond evaluation. Understanding of the rules and their interpretation depends upon these boys. Having rank means accepting responsibility; by taking this authority and fairly exercising his judgment, a cadet grows to be a young adult. 50 THE TRAINING CADRE FIRST ROW: Brown, K. O., Treadway, Davis, J. O., Ryan, Byrum, Blackwell. SECOND ROW: Hoover, Langley, P. G., Weston, deMontmollin, McTeer, T. H., Osteen. THIRD ROW: Lovejoy, Wienges, Traylor, Gatch, Holland, Lewter. FOURTH ROW: Obenschain, Forrest. At the beginning of each school year, all new boys are placed in the Recruit Company. These new cadets are prepared for the day in October when they will be assigned to the Battalion companies. The responsibility of preparing these boys for this day falls on the Training Cadre. This group of boys is picked at the end of each year by Captain Beckham to assist him in Sep- tember. They were selected for their leadrship, their willingness to work, and their proficiency in military drilling. The Training Cadre did an excellent job in orienting the new boys to their new school. A very hard job was well done by this very select few. 51 CLASS DIRECTORY (Continued from page 36) Mauldin, A. J. . . 204 Von Holdin, Greenville, S. C. Merchant, J. With the help of the staff this book has become a reality out of a vision. It has been our wish to produce a yearbook that will serve in a way to bring back pleasant memories of the year at C. M. A.; the laughter, fun and companionship which the students have shared; the hours spent enriching our minds in the classrooms and de- veloping our personalities through ex- tracurricular activities. This book at- tempts to record a few of the events in a most important phase of our lives. My thanks and appreciation to the members of the Annual Staff and to the faculty officers for their efforts in helping to get this material ready for the press. They are a form of recreation that is channeled to de- velop spirit and social culture. It is the aim of the Dance Committee to intro- duce and improve the variety of the school dances so as to advance at- tendance and expand the rythmic skill of the cadet corps. The meetings, held twice a month in the homes of faculty members, are infor- mal and friendly. The group reads one book a month, and every other meet- ing is devoted to a discussion of the book for that month. Other topics for discussion are drawn from areas of school life, American politics, world problems, religion, and morals. Mem- bers are nominated and elected by the faculty on basis of their grades and ability to discuss different subjects. Those who have received a mono- gram letter are invited to be members of the Block C Club. One of the highlights of the school year is the club initiation. This week of air raids and services is completed by the initiants talent show, which is not only entertaining, but also en- lightening. A club party in May always ends the year on a happy note. Since membership in this organiza- tion is earned by working side by side in a team effort, many close and last- ing friendships are formed and make this a very strong campus organiza- tion. Opening the second season of foot- ball, the cadets got off to a good start. The Spartans won their first two games by impressive scores. The team showed a strong will and lots of determina- tion throughout the season. The team should be well supplied with talent as juniors Fulgieri, Turner, and Miller are returning for another season. As a highlight to the football season, Tommy Wright was chosen the Best Back, Jerry CAPTAINS DUKES, WRIGHT, DAVIS Davis the Best Lineman, Tip Gibson the Most Improved, and Darby Dukes the Most Valuable Player. The team was guided by Head Coach Bullard, Line Coach Patry, and Backfield Coach Dukes. We of the EXCALIBUR would like to take this opportunity to wish the foot- ball team the best of luck in the years to come. The 1960-61 Basketball Team started as what most people considered the best yet at C. M. A. The boys played hard and tried to earn the confidence the cadet corps had entrusted them with. The team, composed of seven lettermen, had a tremendous start, losing only one game in the first half season of play. Mishaps, which have seemed to plague all of C. M. A s athletic teams, struck again. This year misfortune came by the way of in- eligibility, as three of the starting five players were lost because of it. At this point Coach Dukes reorganized the team. This process was slow and tiring, but the fine coaching of Coach Dukes and Coach Gallagher showed. This group of boys, led by Darby Dukes and Sonny Manheim, the remaining start- ers, began to show promise as a fine squad when the season ended. 72 STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Bellune, Vaughan, Lanford, McTeer, C. BASEBALL The Spartans got off to a slow start losing the first two games, but Cap- tains Treadway and Dukes with their batting and outstanding fielding have led the fine team. This year's team was mostly without experience, but Coach Bullard has done a good job with the players through his encouragement and long hours of practice. As we go to the press, the baseball season is not completed but we know they will con- tinue to do an outstanding job for the school. Coach BULLARD, Treadway, Dukes, D. The Spartans also placed fourth out of a field of ten at the Florence In- vitational Relays. Between his needs and his capacities was the narrow margin of desperation. Through the centuries since, Adam’s descendant has learned that sweat of brow, necessary ingredient though it may be, will alone produce poor loaves, and few. He has learned the way to multiply his own puny efforts with the powerful engines of his own ingenuity. He has learned to reinstitute some portion of his being as capital, to employ capital effectively to provide new and better tools, and with them he has fashioned a margin of social gain beyond the dreams of man since the beginning. Today, we identify this relationship of man to his labor, his capital, his techniques, his tools, and his dreams, as technology. And wherever technology has flourished, social gains have followed as a matter of cause and effect. Technology is the great multiplication table. It is the margin between pint and bushel, between ounce and pound, between dozen and gross. In America, it is the margin between homespun and nylon, between the pot on the hearth and the eye-level oven, between root cellar and deep freeze, between plow and tractor, between wagon train and jet liner and, because the means must precede the fulfilment, the margin between Lincoln’s lonely study by the light of the dying fire and the schol- arly haven of the Harvard Yard. In these achievements, men have found the ivay to the standards of life, of dignity, and of aspiration toward which they have struggled for centuries, with the goals always just eluding their outstretched hands. Technol- ogy, providing that strength, has produced the thrust of energy that today we see measured in the margin of comfort over deprivation, the margin of luxury over ne- cessity, the margin of knowledge over ignorance, the margin of security over fear and perhaps, in perilous times, the margin of survival over disaster. In technology’s wake have come the order of law, the amenities of culture, the tender hand of charity. For only as the head once bowed with toil can be raised up can man lift his eyes toward those broad and hopeful margins of tomorroiv. ay pla HOME OF Du PWd O acrylic fiber PRINTED AND BOUND BY THE R.
