CAMDEN, SOUTH CAROLINA Editor, Fred Stack Assistant Editor, Pat Langley Business Managers, Donald Jones, Joe Lupton 1959 1960 in CLASSES MILITARY ACTIVITIES SPORTS FOREWORD To those who have spent a portion of their youth in this school; to those who have done more than their share to guide us; to all the students and personnel at Camden Military Academy, we present a post- mortem record of the school year 1959-1960 in hopes that someday as you leaf through the pages, you will find some of your fondest memories im- printed here. Colonel Thomas L. Alexander DEDICATION We, the seniors of I960, in passing, humbly leave this dedication to Col. “Alec” as a small token of our appreciation to the humor and guidance that not only brightened each day, but made our last year unforgettable. We feel privileged and honored to have been associated with a man so under- standing and devoted to helping youth find a place in life. 5 PRESIDENT Col. James F. Risher Col. Risher was bom in Hampton County S. C., on November 26, 1889. He attended the public schools of South Carolina, The Citadel, and the Atlanta School of Law where he gradu- ated in 1910. Col. Risher taught in South Caro- lina schools from 1911 to 1922. In 1922, he took a teaching job at Carlisle Military School. He continued to teach at Carlisle until 1928, at which time he became Headmaster of Carlisle. In 1958, Col. Risher bought Camden Military Academy. In two short years he has turned it into a top rate school. We of the Excalibur staff and of the cadet corps are truly proud to have known such a diligent and hardworking man. HEADMASTER Maj. Canning P. Risher Maj. Risher was born on September 19, 1931, the son of our President, Col. Risher. His birth- place was in Bamberg, S. C. He attended the public schools of Bamberg, Carlisle Military School, and The Citadel, where he graduated in 1952. Upon graduation, Maj. Risher took a job with the duPont Company. In 1953, he entered the army as a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1955, he came out of the Army with the rank of 1st Lieutenant of the Infantry. Upon completion of his active duty Maj. Risher started teaching at Carlisle. He remained there for three years. He then came to Camden to take the job of Headmaster. For the past two years Maj. Risher has put forth much effort to make Camden Military Academy a top grade school for everyone to be proud of. It is the opinion of the cadet corps that he has done this and much more. We of the Excalibur staff salute you, Maj. Risher, for a job well done. 6 COMMANDANT OF CADETS Capt. James T. SASH AND SWORD The highest ranking Cadets within Camden Military Academy are these Com- missioned Officers. They were chosen as the Cadet leaders by virtue of their excellent records. These men not only are the leaders within our military organi- zation but also are the well-rounded, intelligent gentlemen that Camden Military Academy is proud to stand behind. With the welfare of their men always at heart, they are constantly setting a remarkable example for the Cadet Corps to follow. 42 N. C. O. CLUB These Non-commissioned officers are the backbone of our military organiza- tion. They have proven many times their ability to receive, obey, and pass on orders from their superior officers to the men in their charge. While enstilling discipline in their own squads, platoons, and companies, and enforcing the rules while on duty as Sergeant of the Guard or Officer of the Guard, they have held their own personal records exemplary of the leaders that they truly are. These men, our future Commissioned Officers, will be leaders not only during their careers as Cadets but also after they go out into the various vocations of their country. TRAINING CADRE These are the selected cadets chosen for their outstanding show of drill and discipline who train the new cadets upon their arrival, and accustom them to our military life. These men did an excellent job in getting the new cadets off on the right foot and in stressing to them the importance of a well rounded man with a military training to the future of our nation. 44 Kneeling, Left to Right: Jackson, Rodgers, R. They are a form of recreation that is channeled to develop spirit and social culture. It is the aim of the Dance Committee to introduce and improve the variety of the school dances so as to advance attendance and expand the rythmic skill of the cadet corps. In the course of this year, this committee has maintained a quality of dances that are worth} of our highest commendation. Bobby Van Hook President Lt. LIBRARY STAFF One of the hardest working and busiest groups in school is the Library staff. This group is made up of nine students who help Lt. Zemp in the library. The main job of the Library staff is to acquaint students with library services, re- sources, and procedure; to create wider interest in good books and reading; and to recruit students for professional librarianship. We wish to thank Lt. Zemp, who has done very much this year to broaden the sources of information and knowledge of how to use the library. Ronald Jordan President Lt. Zemp Faculty Adviser 48 Jones, J. W. President Lt. Beckham Faculty Adviser FLIGHT CLUB This year’s Flight Club has more than doubled its size of last year. Excellent opportunities such as top grade instructors have been provided to the cadets this year. With the airport standing adjacent to the Academy grounds, the club has been able to closely observe the construction and flying of aircraft. The members of the Flight Club receive necessary training while enjoying the thrill of flying. Kneeling, Left to Right: Byrum, Bridwell, Wilson, J. P., Smith, W. P., Jones, J. W. My selections, which were very difficult to make, are as follows: Queen - Miss Brenda Hampton Princesses - Miss Nancy Leigh Baker (Alphabetical order) - Miss Susie Kenn Miss Peg McElveen Miss Judy Morgan Really, the task of selecting a winner in a beauty contest is a hard one. I wish that I could have selected many instead of just one. So many of these lovely young ladies surely deserve top recognition. May I express to you, and through you to the Corps of Cadets of the Camden Military Academy, my sincere good wishes for a fine year- You young men are attending a fine institution under the most capable and dedicated direction of Colonel J. F. Risher, your president. VJe are certainly proud of the fact that he is a Citadel man. Yours is the opportunity to get your training under a system that fits each of you to take your proper place in our society as good American citizens. With every good wish. MIVC spb P.S. FOOTBALL For the first year of competition the Camden Academy Football Team did fairly well against their tough opposition. The whole student body was behind the team all the way and cheered them on in a winning and losing cause. The en- tire Cadet Corps went to the opening game of the season at Harts ville, and though the team lost, the spirit was very high all through the combat. The player who showed the most through the season as a team leader was Jerry Davis. He played outstanding football on both offense and defense and whenever the team spirit got low he was there pepping it up. Kenny Hughes also deserves favorable mention for his fine playing. Both of these players are Juniors and are ex- pected back to lead the team on to greater heights next year. Things look good for the Spartans of C. M. A. next year as they had a good crop of players who lacked experience this year but should make up for it next year. The post season banquet for the players was a big success with Archie Beare receiving a trophy for the Best Lineman on the team and Mike Brown also receiving one for the Best Back of the team. The Spartans were guided this year by head coach Harold Bullard, line coach Dick Patry, and backfield coach Terry Dukes. The whole student body is looking forward with great anticipation to a successful and excit- ing year of football. Kneeling, Left to Right: Lx. Patry, Lt. Bullard, Lt. Dukes. Dukes Coaches The “Spartans” got off to a slow start in their second season of play, but New Yorker Archie Beare got the team moving. Beare was the teams most valuable player, pleasing many people with his fancy ball handling and his sharp-shooting. Helping Beare were seniors Jose Saralta, Jake Jacobs along with juniors Darby Dukes, Jerry Davis, Bobby Flynn, Mike Grimes, and sopho- mores Hamilton Todd, Tom Griffiths and Charlie Fulgicri. The team played many eye-catching games but Coach Dukes and the team think the most vivid was Winnsboro. The highly rated bas- keteers from Winnsboro had a hard time beating off the timely threats by the Cadets. As the game came to a close Winnsboro won by a slight mar- gin, but the defeat was not a sad one because our boys knew they had done a good job. TRACK Our first year in track got off to a good start on our own track. The track was constructed solely on the efforts of interested boys. It consists of a 440-yard oval and a 100-yard straight away. In the infield were the Discuss and Shotput rings along with the High Jump and Broad Jump pits. In our first season we defeated Camden High, Midway, Blythewood, Dentsville, and Sumter. We were defeated only by Wingate Junior Col- lege, Brookland-Cayce, and Orangeburg. We placed fourth out of a field of nine at the Flor- ence Invitational Relays. The home track meets were well accepted by the Corps of Cadets. Track has found a home at the academy with its first successful season, and since eight lettermen will return, we should have another enjoyable year on the cinders. The speediest men form our 880 relay team. Our high-hurdles trio in action. Our highly successful mile-relay team. 65 Sitting, First Row, Left to Right: Davis, Jacobs, Fulgieri, Burch, Martin, B. The boys who have become members of this club in the past year make up the first such athletic organization at Camden Military Academy. We hope they have started an organization, which will be one of long standing, and which will give any boy a sense of honor to become a part of this club. The presentation of the Block “C” Jacket and a membership in this club is not only to show the Academy's gratitude, but it is an award for long hours of practice and a symbol of games well played. 67 68 THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE TAKING YOUR MEASURE Sortie measures are taken with a tape hut the more important measures of life are taken by the people who size us up, whether it be a sweetheart, a classmate, a son or daughter, or a prospective employer. There is always some keen eye, whether we know it or not, scrutinizing the dimensions not only of our physiques but of our minds, abilities, and characters. Your training at Camden has been designed to improve the di- mensions of both your mind and character so that when you graduate it can be said that here stands a Cadet foursquare to the world, ready, and eager to shoulder the responsibilities which his particular talents and abilities qualify him to assume. We measure Cadets for uniforms. Our customers measure us in their appraisal of our ability to execute a uniform contract satis- factorily. It will be a neve?'-ending effort on our part to keep our measurements good in the eyes of Camden Military Academy. We salute the Graduating Class and wish you all Godspeed in your chosen field of endeavor. IRVING L WILSON COMPANY No. 1 Highland Ave. Bala-Cynwyd, Pa.
