WHENEVER WE THE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND ONE ANOTHER, WE THE PEOPLE CAN LOVE EACH A OTHER. The ever so rare feelings of love and togeth- erness are two elements lacking in this great world todayg however, we, the seniors at Cam- den High School, have sincerely tried to bring about a change in our past four years. The task has not been considered easy, and most likely will never be. Nevertheless, we will forever strive to improve ourselves as a people. 1.4, pn- A , M., 1 F The courage and determination dis layed by the many devoted and interested studrents here at The High are qualities which show signs of unity and understanding. Though there have been many barriers, we have kept the positive thought that We The People can overcome whatever we may encounter in order to achieve the high goals we have set for our- selves. ,N ' . 1 'Q 55, gi:g::,,,: 5 we T w'nT.f 4+ J Mx V 01' xl iw 1 ' I t RV! ! Such a person is Mrs. Christine Drew. She is the person that the Franco-Ameri- can Quaker, Stephen Grellet, aptly described when he wrote: I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again . We are grateful for your kindness, and we Wish to dedicate to you our 1977 PURPLE AND GOLD YEARBOOK. May it always serve as a reminder of our love and appreciation. In ppreciation 41 W g ff- X f Frederick Langbridge once wrote, Two men look out through the same bars: One sees the mud, and one sees the stars . Such is the nature of one of our most successful coaches, Mr. Clarence Turner, who has dedi- cated himself to helping our young men become all that they are capable of becoming. Building, winning, chal- lenging, caring are words that reflect your spirit, Mr. Turner. These quali- ties have, as Frederick Langbridge wrote, enabled you to see the stars and have challenged us to do the same. For your faith in us, your en- couragement of us, your dedication to us, we wish to leave a part of our lives. To you, Mr. Turner we dedicate our 1977 PURPLE AND GOLD YEAR- BOOK. One important goal which the admin- istrators of our school aim to achieve is total involvement of all individuals con- cerned with making Camden High a school in which everyone can be proud. Working together with both the faculty and students, the administration has helped to bring about a positive change in recent years in both our school and our community. We, the people of Camden High, would like to extend our sincere thanks to you, the administrators, for your ar- dent efforts in helping us. , f f s., .. .L I r vrfff... -X ,y, ,gif-:H ,W 9 Surely, of all 'rights of man,' this right of the ignorant man to be guided by the Wiser, to be, gently or forcibly, held in the true course by him is the mdisputablest. Carlyle -11 To The Class O Dr. Charles Smerin, Superintendent of Schools n1n11- '1 To the class of 1977: The past four years have seen an ever increasing respect for the academic and athletic accomplish- ments of Camden High School. During the same peri- od an obvious growth in school pride has been evident in the halls, the classrooms and athletic fields. Each individual in the graduating class of 1977, can take a special measure of credit for this outstanding accom- plishment. As you go forth into the fields of education, busi- ness and the society in general, proudly proclaim your affiliation with Camden High School. In recent years, the media and even individual speakers have indicat- ed that graduation from Camden High School and residence in the City of Camden might be a deterrent for future success. There is no basis for this kind of declaration. We know that graduates of Camden High School have, can, and will be leaders in any field of endeavor they select. Sincerely, gamer J1........ Dr. Charles Smerin Dr. Theodore Johnson, Assistant Superinten- dent X 5 K ,. i Xi- . . -- k ,H Dr. Frank Saponare. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Arnold Webster, Assistant Superintendent School Board 1 .: 1 -. 1 - rw vw ' Members of the Camden City Board of Education i 13 As the past four years of our lives come to a close, we, the seniors of Camden High School, want to extend our thanks to an individual who has led our class to one of the greatest moments that we will ever encounter - our graduation from high school. Mrs. Cream - you are that individual. You are the person who has shown us the paths to success. You have taken a tremendous burden upon your shoulders, and have successfully given us the strength to carry our own. Indeed, the burden is a difficult one, but without your guidance we would not have been able to travel down these paths. As the future leaders of tomorrow we can be confident that those who will come after us in Camden High School will benefit from your experience, for we know that you will continue to enrich the lives of Camden High's students. Mrs. Cream, we, the people of Camden High School, sincerely thank you for your profound devotion to us and the fruitful experiences you have provided for us. The Class Of 1977 To the Members of the Graduating Class of 1977: After four years, filled with many pleasant memories and happy associations, you have reached a pinnacle of your life where many important decisions must be made relative to your lifels ambitions. Some of you will go to institutions of higher learning and others will go into the business world. Whatever your choices, it is my fondest desire that the memory of Camden High will remain with you forever. I hope that you will remember the friendships and joyous occasions that you have with your classmates and the teachers. The worst alternative is to fail to go beyond high school, for in the ranks of the unemployed, those with only a high school education are second only to those without a high school education. Men and women with no education beyond high school also tend to end up in dead-end jobs with no real hope of moving up the employment ladder. This is true whether they work in business, industry, the armed forces or civil government jobs. More importantly, if you elect to stop your formal education with high school, you will be making one of the most far- reaching, self-limiting decisions of your lives. You will be denying yourselves the personal development that an investment in a sound college assures - the person- al development that cannot be taken away and that will permanently change your values, your tastes, your literacy, your view of life and your capacity to enjoy it. Remember, life offers you no guarantees, no certainties. The best you can do is to place the most important bets of your lives especially those concerning your education, on those options that seem to hold chances for the greatest rewards. It has been my pleasure to have been your Principal for four years and my wish for you is that you use all of your energies to assist in making the world a better place for all of us. A host of warmest wishes! May the years ahead bring happiness beyond your expectations. Yours in humanity, Qiwfdw Riletta L. Cream Principal M17 Q-'5if'f ' T ... 3 .,,. Mr. H. This devotion to the pursuit of educational goals has helped the students to better cope with the problems that arise in today's world. The students of Camden High recog- nize that the role of the teacher is a difficult one. However, the students are fully aware that our teachers successful- ly meet these challenges each and every day, both in and out of the classroom. We, the people of Camden High, offer our warmest thanks to you, our faculty, for the fine job you have done in our four years spent with you. L A bww L. It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. Einstein Ms. B. Hankins, Chairperson The English Department of Camden High School believes that education is living, and schooling should provide those structured patterns which enable students to cope with themselves, others, and society. English is not merely a subject but a way of life. The department is dedicated to fostering basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking. The teach- ers endeavor to offer provocative activities and stimulating chal- lenges, which will encourage each student to develop his or her abili- ties fully. We feel that the stu- dents' achievements are our best measures of success. We recognize that each student has the potential to create his or her own reality, and we strive to provide them with a variety of di- versified materials and learning experiences, which will make their living experience unique and con- structive. . Courses in current events, in minority group problems, in ur- ban affairs, in current economic issues, in peace and war efforts, in political leadership, and in the Institute for Political Edu- cation have hopefully helped to create an awareness of and an involvement in life today. As history, like every other phase of our American life, is becoming more complex and in- volved, we history teachers have fully accepted the challenge and responsibility of developing our students' abilities to seek the truth in the wide range of politi- cal-social movements that con- front them every day, and to in- terpret such events so as to ef- fectively participate in society as intelligent and active citi- zens. An outstanding senior is an individual who has made a noteworthy contribution which has brightened the image of Camden High School This individual is one who has actively participated in sports, extracurricular activities, or other school related functions. Camden High School is fortunate to possess individuals of such quality and distinction. It is with great pride that the 1977 Purple and Gold announces Camden High School's Outstanding Seniors. W Michael Coley is an energetic individual who earnestly works at the tasks which may con- front him. He has participated in many of the musical events that Camden High School has presented. He has been a member of the choir, and has participated in the Black History Week Programs. Recently, he was honored by being named President of the United Method- ist Neighborhood Youth Center. The members of the Class of '77 are proud to have him as a fellow classmate. Alvin Gantt is one of the most respected indi- viduals in Camden High School among the stu- dents and faculty. Undoubtedly, this stems from the respect which he shows to everyone. He has demonstrated both outstanding aca- demic and athletic abilities. He has been an asset to Camden High's football and basketball teams, as well as the track team. His character is most exemplary. We are fortunate that Alvin has walked the halls of Camden High. She is an enthusiastic young lady whose constant determination has defi- nitely made her an individual in whom Cam- den High can justifiably be proud. She has maintained a fine academic average. While this is an achievement in itself, she has also exhibit- ed outstanding athletic ability as a member of the basketball team. She has been a member of the tennis, cross country, and track teams. In Memoriam In the poem, We Are Seven by William Wordsworth, a child delivers a beautiful message on love. From a family of seven brothers and sisters, only she lives at home with her mother. Two reside in another village, two are at sea, and two dwell in God's Heavenly Kingdom. To the child, the family is not separated. We are seven. she insists. The Camden High School Family presently has twenty-six hundred students, teachers, administrators, and custodial personnel working in its classrooms and buildings. One is in God's Heavenly Kingdom. But Smitty is not separated from our family. He is with us always in spirit, mind, and heart. We are twenty-six hundred and one, we insist. 17. We, the People of Camden High School are filled with pride concerning the underclassmen who belong to our family. With each passing day, the un- derclassmen exhibit qualities that make our school a very special asset to the surrounding community. Academically, the underclassmen continually strive for excellence. Also, their active participa- tion in school activities is quite impres- sive to both the administration and fac- ulty members. We, the People of Camden High salute the underclassmen and wish them continued success in their future endeavors. 5 e W 'W t ,- .. wit :K 7 V 5 all ' A.. ,, ,Fifi Q ' '..,'f t L .,.. The Institute for Political and Le- gal Education has designed a year- long studies program to provide high school students with practical exper- iences and understanding in the po- litical and government processes. The program stresses a two-fold approach: lj the acquisition of knowl- edge, both information and skills, and 25 participation of the students, first in classroom and school activities by role playing simulation games, and then in the actual community, usual- ly in state and local agencies. This two-fold emphasis enables them to initiate and execute projects that af- fect the community in a positive way. The political, governmental and le- gal education program of IPLE has been validated as successful, cost ef- fective and exportable by the stan- dards and guidelines of the United States Office of Education, and has been endorsed for national dissemi- nation by the Dissemination Review Panel. .
