CHARLES SMERIN SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS LETTER TO GRADUATES My sincere congratulations and best wishes to the class of 1976. Your graduation, the launching of your adult careers, coincides with the Bicenten- nial year, the beginning of our nation's third century, and presents a special challenge. Vivid newspaper accounts and radio and television broadcasts of our nation's history at this time give us a unique opportunity to examine our present state in the light of where we have been in the past. Problems we face today are real and grave. Our own city streets, like many urban areas in this country, are evidence of human suffering caused by many years of social and economic injustice. Yet we have much in our history to respect and emulate, including a sense of optimism that has helped us overcome the severest of crises. Now is a fitting time, therefore, for you - our nation's young people - to look closely at the past and take inspiration from those leaders who have given us the heriage we are proud of. That is your challenge, the challenge of the Bicentennial year. We look to you, our young adults, to spearhead our fight for social justice and a happy, prosperous life for all. The best of luck to you in all your endeavors. For the first time, the Eng- lish curriculm included several nine week mini-courses in the English area, such as Black Lit- erature, Values, Myths, and Cre- ative Writing. The English Mini-Courses have stimulated greater participation, and attendance, as well as pro- vided a more relevant experience for our graduates this year. We hope that this year's class will remember the Engligh mini- courses as an innovative step to- ward better education. HISTORY Keeping in mind the wisdom of Ana- tole France who said, The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young mindsf, the History Department has pursued new and exciting ways of stimulating our students. For the first time the Institute for Political Education Course was offered to both Junior and Senior students. Through pursuing an active participa- tion in voter registration, simulating an election to understand the electoral pro- cess, and enthusiastically and winningly participating in a model congress, our students have directed their interest in learning from their own experience and surroundings. Secondly, mini-courses have been in- stituted for senior American History classes. Greater enthusiasm is generat- ed by students who choose a more in- depth study of particular history areas in which they are interested. The curios- ity of our young people is nurtured in concentrating in such areas as minority problems, American involvement in the wars of the Twentieth Century, the elec- toral process, or money and inflation. Thirdly, the Visual Educational Filmstrip program as prepared by the EVENING BULLETIN has helped to stimulate our students' interest beyond the limits of their own experience and surroundings to the questioning of the world around them. Study of such meaningful and current problems is then reinforced by readings and study in classes from current magazines like TIME, U.S. NEWS and WORLD RE- PORT, and EBONY. The three aforementioned methods of study have hopefully helped our stu- dents to ask healthy, useful, and enrich- ing questions. The result is the belief that every time a young person ask Why,,, education does leap a mile. We em- phatically answer No! The foreign language department has grown steadily over the past ten years. In fact the number of students studying Spanish has quadrupled. The teachers in the foreign language department are among some of the longer standing members of the faculty. Presently there are four Spanish teachers, 2 French teachers, and a Latin teacher work- ing under the most competent aegis of Ms. G. Fittipaldi. Some of the objectives of the foreign language department are to enable the student to communicate in a foreign language and to give them some insight of the different cultures in which these languages are spoken. Santiago INSTITUTE FOR POLITICAL AND LEGAL EDUCATION The Institute for Political and Legal Education CIPLEJ has designed a year- long social studies program to provide high school students with practical experiences and understanding in the political and government processes. The need for this program was apparent when voting franchise was extended to the eighteen year old. The curriculum developed by the staff, together with high school teachers and students in fourteen New Jersey districts, has three units: voter education and campaigning, state and local government, and individual rights and freedoms. Included are such activities as lobbying and parliamentary procedures, simulated elections, and issues analysis. The curriculum comprises an integrated mixture of innovative printed and audiofvisual materials. A statewide model congress and four seminars a year sponsored by the Institute supplement the cirriculum for all schools. The program stresses a two-fold approach: lj the acquistion of knowledge, both information and skillsg and 25 participation of the students, first in classroom and school activities by role playing simulation games, and then in the actual community, usually in local and state agencies. This two-fold emphasis enables them to initiate and execute projects that affect the community in a . positive manner. The political, governmental and legal education program of the IPLE has been validated as successful, cost effective and exportable by the standards and guidelines of the United States Office of Education, and has been endorsed for national dissemination by the Dissemination Review Panel. Its dissemination if funded by the New Jersey Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Title III program. 146 ational Honor Society .rf Left To Right fSeatedJ T. Alston, A. Miller, L. Clements, C.
