THE MEGUNTICOOK 7 it SENIORS it WASHINGTON TRIP CHIT CHAT On April 11, 1958, the senior class of C.H.S. embarked upon its annual Washington Trip. The seniors left Ban- gor at 8 p. m. and spent a restless night and morning singing and talking. They arrived in New York City about 7:30 a. m. Mr. and Mrs. Sherman and Mr. and Mrs. Smullen added to the trip im- mensely as temporary guardians of 36 young adults. There was one com- plaint, however, which was directed to- ward Mr. Smullen. This complaint was heard at 5:45 a. m. when he diligently knocked on everyone’s door with a cheery, “Get up. you little darlings; it’s 9 o’clock.” There was only one runaway, (whose initials are H. L. A.), on the trip. She was seen hopping a ride along the railroad tracks at Valley Forge. Mr. Sherman met up with a real ex- plosion at the Gettysburg battlefield when he sat on a “Whoopie” cushion. I think the battle was a draw. At Independence Hall two young smokers encountered a little pipe sick- ness. It seems that Dick Nash and Sam Jones aren’t habitual smokers and doubt if they’ll try again for awhile. There was a little mix-up on time by four that were late for dinner at the Yorktowne Hotel. Shirley MacDonald, Leah Thomas, Bill Smullen, and Joe Talbot pleaded innocent to the charges on the grounds of misunderstanding the dinner call. Two new runners were added to the cross-country team at Philadelphia. Ellen Cooper and Jean Garland were seen sprinting down a road in pur- suit of the Camden bus. They had a good run too. Superman Carr was defied by the law of gravity at New Market, Vir- ginia, when he found himself sprawled on a driveway after fleeing from other classmates. He didn’t quite see the stone step in his way. The first swimmers of the trip were three named Bill, Ellen, and Shirley. It was cold, but it was nice. The hot Virginia air was their excuse for a duck. Leah Thoinas set up a beauty salon on 5th Seat Street by giving Darrell Micue the new Sputnik Whirl. Leah does a good job when it comes to a hair-do—but—on a boy? Everyone enjoyed the sights and people in Washington, D. C., except Bea Nash, who was almost blackmailed by some senior boys named Lloyd, Pete and Dick. Bea was true to her fiance. There was only one marriage on the trip, that of Shirley M. to Alan C. by Minister Bill S. of “Our Town”. For- tunately they were divorced five min- utes later. That’s fickle love! “Squirt gun Collemer” was the real terror of the trip though. He was often raided by someone who had access to a gun, but he didn’t have the heart to drown anyone. A real gentleman! It was a long trip back to dear Cam- den, but it was a welcome sight. Forty people including chaperones were treated to one of the most enjoyable weeks of their lives. The members of the Class of ’58 will never forget their experiences.
