TEMPTATICDN 83 Conifer Camden High 641-7J6ffGfSOU, Ce mciien, Ar. Glifudenr Clife Organizatzbqs Qgcademics 'People -zakr- 1 T4 f ,ww TEIVIPTATION We were tempted to dream, to achieve, to join and erjoy the year at CHS. Temptations were in a- bundant supply for all stu- dents-like the large, lus- cious sundae, tempting us to have it all ---- all the joys, the frustrations and the glow of achievement that comes with being part of a successful school year. Cars,- Racey, fancy, ex- pensive. The dream of all students. Some had them, some didn't, but all of us desired to own a car that would be the envy of every- one else. We were tempted to be considered the best dressed students in town. Tempted to spend a fortune on de- signer jeans like Calvin Kleins and Gloria Vander- bilts. However, we were also tempted to spend our money in a way that ,K sttss Yfffl wi W- ji fl ir' fi f f? iiii' brought us instant excite- ment and challenge ---- on video games. The video game craze has swept the nation and CHS students were not immune to Video Game fever. Romance, the dream of dreams for students, to find the one and only, was a real temptation for most of us at CHS. Dating, doing home- work together, planning for the future, were all part of the framework for the school year. The fmal temptation, the ultimate goal for seniors was to achieve the engraved piece of paper that said,- Congratulations, you made it. You are a success. Graduation, the dream which began in August for seniors and was fulfilled in May, brought with it the temptations and challenges for a wonderful future. Gavin Fletcher rode in motorcross races this summer. The River Ray? races were one highlight of the of the summer SUMM ER FUN!! After the long, drawn out school year, summer was a welcome break to everyone. While some students chose to work at summer jobs, others chose a life of lei- sure. Sleeping late was one groove nobody had trouble getting back into. Everyone went their separate ways and did their own thing. Different people chose dif- ferent ways to spend their time, while some of us just did the same old thing every day. 1 jeep riding' proved to be a very popular activity a- mong students this sum- mer. Not only was it a fun way to get where you were going, it was also an easy way to cool off. Many of Camden High's students were seen in jeeps having a good time. Swimming has always been a favorite past time in the summer and everyone seemed to take advantage of the sun and water at one time or another. If a pool wasn't handy, just laying in the sun and cooling off in the sprinkler seemed to work just as well. If being in the hot sun wasn't your thing, then staying inside and watching soap operas was usually the thing to do. All My Child- ren, General Hospital, and One Life to Live seemed to be the favorites of everyone. The 2nd Annual Ouachita River Raft Race was the major attraction for Ouachi- ta County residents. There were many entries, as well as something to do for those who just wanted to come for the fun of it. Food, music, games- and fun activities were all in- cluded this year. The raft race was a big hit. Even if you didn't win anything, most people had fun just being there. just about everyone went on a vacation at one time or another. Many attended the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. Some were seen practicing for motorcross events that were held in Pine Bluff and El Dorado. What ever you did, sum- mertime was a fun-filled and busy time for everyone. By the time school was ready to begin, just about everyone was ready to start cracking the books and set- tle in for another year of school activities and fun. ASSEMBLIES Assemblies at Camden High School are a great way to relax and ease the ten- sion of the day for school work. Assemblies were also a way for students to find out what was going on in school that they did not know a- bout. Assemblies were a lot of fun and there were many different types of assem- blies so people did not get tired of them. The students seemed to emoy the Pep Rally assem- blies the best because it gave all the students at Camden High School the chance to participate and to let themselves go for a change and get to scream and holler for the football players and for their own class. The students also have a lot of fun painting signs at some lucky person's house for Friday's Pep rally. The classes enjoyed the fun competition of buying spirit chain links for the most spirited class for the Pep rallies. Another fun assembly the students liked a lot was the Teacher Talent assembly. This assembly gave the stu- dents an excuse to make fun of the teachers openly and not have to worry about going to detention hall and the teachers loved the chance to get up on stage for a change, and do their own thing instead of like always, watching everyone else up on stage having a good time entertaining us at CHS. Lesa Kzkiu' and Wren Clark gave a help ing hand during the Teacher Talent as t. sembly. BEHIND THE SCENES Working nine to five and sometimes earlier and sometimes later, the peo- ple who work behind the scenes at CHS often do not get the recognition they deserve. The students and teach- ers are always on-stage, as are the principals, but without the people work- ing quietly and with dedi- cation in the backround, things would not run very smoothly. Mr. Cotton, the custod- ian, sees that the building and all of its various funct- ioning parts work when they should. Sometimes, the airconditioning or the heat will go berserk, and Mr. Cotton is always on -the scene to fix things. The cooks work hard to provide tasty and nutrit- ious meals for students and faculty. The home- made rolls and other spec- ialties were popular with students. Bus drivers need nerves of steel to carry students 'to' and from school. They also develop patience, es- pecially when taking stu- dents on field trips. Altemative School teach- ers do not get a lot of ap- preciation from students, but someone has to do the job, and they do theirs well. The afternoon crew make the classrooms presentable after the daily students create havoc. The office personnel keep the school running smoothly and ef- ficiently and the aides keep teachers from drop- ping dead from overwork. To these unsung heroes of the school, we give a special salute - you are doing a great job. ti Km 4 QR.. ... tn -:gf 5 Jarvis Beard works after school to clean classrooms. Styles of years past have once again come back to make their appear- ance. A One popular trend that has returned is the mini skirt. Once popular in 'the 60's, it has come back even bigger and better than before. Ballet and dance h'ave brought.about the style of wearing tights and leg warmers, which help keep the Camden High students warm and stylish in and out of the classroom. More of the guys seem to care about fashion these days and have started to look neater and sharper in pin stripes, ties and polos. Penny loafers, boat shoes and Nikes are still being worn this year by all stu- dents, and they are just as comfortable as they are 'CHIC . Boys are wearing fheir hair shorter and neater while the wavy look is popular with the girls. But, as always, the most popular type of outfit for all students is a pair of jeans Qdesigner of coursej, an Ocean Pacific or Panama jack shirt and a good old pair of tennis shoes. That is just one style that will never go out offashion. ' So, don't throw away any old or outdated clothes from your closet. Save them, and in a couple of years they will come back as a brand new type of fad. Old clothes just never seem to go out of style. f YL? It is a known fact that it takes more muscles to frown then it does to smile. The most attractive asset people have to get someones at- tention or to just let someone know that they are interested in them is their smile. First impressions are very im- portant, and the first thing people notice about a person is their smile. People can tell a lot about someone from the way they smile. People tend to catagorize you by your smile. If you have a cute smile, you are called a cute per- son. If you have a pretty smile, you are called a pretty person. If you have beautiful smile, you are called a beautiful person. People at Camdenl-ligh School have the prettiest and best smiles in town. A smile makes a personality complete. So get in the practice and smile, you might be surprised at the re- sults. Senior Anthony Wesley seems to have lot to smile about. PANTHQERS CAN DO MAGIC, the theme for the 1982 Homecoming Festivi- ties seemed to be appro- priate in every way. Not only was there magic in the air for a week, there was fun and excitement in everything that happened. After the court was nomi- nated and announced, everything seemed to fly b . yFloat building until all hours of the night was the event that just about every- one found to be fun as everyone pitched in to stuff, build, design, or just plain watch a few boards and a trailer be transformed into a magical creation. The Junior class won the float contest, but every float was a masterpiece to the class that built it. As everyone nervously a- waited a date to the dance and game, the activities just didn't seem to stop. The FBLA once again sold cor sages and the Student Council rushed around to decorate and prepare for the Assembly and dance. After the assembly that presented the court and crowned the queen, just a bout everyone went to the clowns, and smiles seemed parade where floats abundant. Not only were the festivi- ties fun, but the Panthers played a great game and went on to win with the score 9-0. But, as all good things must end, so did Home- coming and everyone was a little sad to put away their hammers and haul their floats away. And even though it involved a lot of hard work and time, Home- coming 1982 was a magical event that no one will ever forget. Once again FBLA made money by selling homecoming corsages. As students waded through tests, lectures and note-taking, lunch ap- proached and they were faced with a choice of either brown-bagging it or risking life and stomache lining to choke, down the cafeteria's mystery meat with secret sauce. Those students who were fast enough eating lunch es- tablished a routine of stand- ing in the locker area ming- ling with people, going out- side and mingling with neqrs! people, or going to the bathroom and mingling with people. As seniors drew closer to graduation, most anxiously awaited the time when they would venture out on their own. It was getting time to leave the underclassmen, dances, football games, and report card and step out into the adult world as a new man or woman. C.H.S. seniors were pre- pared for graduation. Many participated in a Senior countdown during the lunch periods each day. College visitation was also a part of graduation Gordon Hale measures Johnnie Haynie QC, and gown. preparation. Seniors would take approved day off from school and visit the college of his choice. Ordering announce- ments and caps and gowns was also a part of getting ready for that big day. In that purchase they also bought Class Keys, Memory Books, and Thank You Notes. One of the most irnpor- tant necessities for gradu- ation was making the grade. Many seniors were not straight A students. And some may have to at- tend summer classes to get their other credits. One senior in particular stated I thought my senior year was going to be easy, but I see I had to work hard at my classes and participate in more activities. Another state, I think this year was the best ever. For every mood there is a season, and our season was the entire school year. We were tempted to set our goals high and then go for it. We all took a giant step forward in the area of achievements. We laughed, cried and loved our way through homework, tests, activi- ties, athletics and friend- ships which make a school year so satisfying. A It was not a perfect year. We had our ups and downs, but the ups made us grateful for the things we were tempted to ac- complish, and the downs made us stronger to face the future. Although the end of the school year brought an end to a major segment in the lives of seniors, we were tempted, to pause in tribute to Camden High School, before going on to all the exciting and won- derful things in store for us. This did not, however, break that famous panther pride. Games were exciting. Of- ten it looked like the pan- thers would pull through and win. It was seldom that they did. The reason for this was because players this year had little experience on the field. Starters consisted of Sophomores and juniors and seniors. Coach Bocox commented that the team was good, and just because they had one lousy season does not mean they won't come out and be undefeated next sea- son. With this inspiring message, he also said that most teams do have bad seasons now and then, and this year's was Camdenls. According to Coach Octavia Taylor, gymnastics is an individual sport with gymnasts competing against themselves, to develop and perfect new and more com- plicated routines. A sense of balance and poise along with some origi- nality and dedication is what makes a gymnast a top notch competitor, the coach noted. The seemingly effortless back flips, handstands, and straddle vaults are the re- sults of hours of grueling practice when every muscle is toned and developed. Students who work hard, show responsibility and de- dication and concern for C.H.S. are the ones needed to put together the year- book. The Conifer Staff had to meet an early deadline authorized by Hurley Print- ing Company. To begin the year staff workers had to learn many things. They learned how to lay out pages, how to use the cameras and the equipment necessary in developing them, and how to use the tools associated with the other tasks. COUNCILZ WORKS V E RY HAR D Student Council sponsors the Homecoming festivities every year. The students manage and finance the production. This year, Homecoming was a great success, thanks to the hard work of the Student Council members. The biggest working pro- ject for the Council is the sale of school day pictures. This involved several mem- bers who helped distribute and identify them. The Council is working on get- ting more assemblies and sponsored the Arkansas Re- pertory Theater in a spring perfomnnce. Early in the year, the Student Council held an ap- preciation party for the tea- chers. They presented them with a Microwave Oven for the Teachers Lounge. After the bulletin is run off, they are passed out to every teacher and absentee slips are collected. Then the names are put in order and typed and ran off. Business courses, such as accounting, typing, busi- ness math, and career orientation are helpful to students, especially if their future goals include a busi- ness related career. Senior La'Vern Turner said Accounting is very hard but it is a great leam- ing experience. She also said it will be rewarding in the long run, because her intended major is accounting and computer science. It sounds ike fun, and it looks like n, but in reality in it is a hit of hard work. The 1983 lonifer Staff has worked .ard all year to bring you his yearbook, we hope ou enjoy rt. No one can do a year- +ook alone, it takes a lot f cooperation on the part if everyone involved. As ditor of the Conifer, I would like to thank every- +ne who had a part in this 'earbook. Iwould like to thank the dvertisers, first of all. For vithout them, there would ve no yearbook. This year t cost approximately 5526 ner book for the yearbook 0 be printed. We tried to .eep the student costs lown to 312, which meant ve had to sell a lot of ads. The community support vas wonderful, and we are 'ery grateful. , Money is an important lonsidersation in the naking of a yearbook, and nanaging the money and ill that goes with that job, akes nerves of steel. I vould like to thank the Ionifer Business Manager loxanne Nevels for doing L truely wonderful job of seeping the books straight, so we always :new where we were. Vlrs. McKinney, the school treasurer, said this fear was the best year for raving the least confusion n handling the money. Roxanne did a super job. Deadlines are important Lo a yearbook, although we lidn't meet some of our earlier ones, we were on Larget for our final dead- ine when we were thrown 1 unique curve---our Jublisher went out of business. We want to Lhank thw Walsworth Printing Company for pick- .ng up our book for print- ing very late in the sea- son. We still are not sure when the books will arrive, and we hope that everyone realizes that if it is late, we are really not to blame. The photographer is the backbone of any yearbook, and I would like to say a special thanks to the year- book and journalism photographers who really made this book possible, especially Laura Edwards, Alan Fohn, Janette Fogle, Mike Hamby, John Ken- dall, Kim Dunn and Cindy Cook. There were a lot of times when the negatives got messed up, or picture were lost or stolen or just mysteriously disappeared. The photographers worked long and hard to develop and print pictures which would provide a lasting re- cord of the 1982-83 school year. Alicia Gillette and Janice Rayford deserve special recognition for their total dedication to typing the yearbook. They came during every study hall, during every break and sometimes even dur- ing lunch to work on the Compugraphic to type all the copy and picture identifications in the year- book. When some of us had a break, they still had to work, and they never complained. This year the book was divided into sections and each group struggled to meet the deadline for their sections. The Advertising section was Robin Mose- ley, Cindy Wilson and Lisa Harrell. The People sec- tion composed of Angela Frazier, Beverly Gilchrist and Wanda Miller. Jackie Collins and Vanessa Kelly did the Academic section and Sherry Edwards, Franklin Brooks, Eartha Hawkins and Shelia Williams did Organizations. The Sports section was done by Christy Young, Carolyn Armstrong and Beth Yak- src. The Student Life section was long and hard to do, and Natalie and Dana Hurst worked up to the very last minute to finish lt. Janette Fogle, in addi- tion to taking pictures acted as the class secre- tary, typing up list, after list after, after list and making sure the files were inorder. I would also like to thank our advisor Mrs. Johns, who pushed and praised and yelled and cried until we got the yearbook done. Since it was Mrs. Johns first year- book also, we all leamed together. Finally lid like to thank you, the students of CHS, because without you there would be no need for a yearbook. I've enjoyed this opportunity and have greatly enjoyed making this book. We all have tried and feel we've been successful in giving you a record of the 1982-83 school year. All the triumphs and trials, ups and downs, glories and events we have compiled to present with pride and pleasure to you.
