WORK X School Behiratiun illlaque The citizens of Camden County dedicate this school to the vocational education of its youth and of its adult workers. The pre-employment courses are designed to give the trade skill, technical knowledge, and general education for citizenship which will enable the youth of the county to meet its voca- tional, social, and civic responsibilities. The extension courses are to give instruction in the trade skill and technical knowledge nec- essary to develop expert craftsmanship in adults already engaged in industry. f...,,, A fff'X 'V Hamden Hnunfy Vmzf12f14f1lSfl1zf0l lfmusazfkm Zfoufffshzp New jfrscfy UEH'HUHHLlS'I fu and around our chaff! The Camden County Vocational School was first conceived in the minds of industrial leaders and educators of Camden County during the years immediately preceding 1928. Because of the leadership of the late Charles S. Albertson, who was then County Superintendent of Schools, he is regarded as the father of the school. During the quarter century beginning with the schooI's opening day on October 'l5, 1928, the school has consistently progressed under the diligent and prudent planning of the county leaders, instructors, and friends. The success and reputation achieved by the alumni in serving county and community as citizens and tradesmen, permit us, the class of 1953, to assume our heritage with still greater confidence and trust. A well equipped gym enabled us to keep physically fit and at the some time provided us with the means of enioying many happy hours of play. The school nurse, Mrs. B. Lorraine Paulley, skillfully administered to our minor medical needs when the occasion arose. It isn't every school that boasts of such a fine indoor swimming pool as this at Camden County Vocational School. A satisfied stomach in the middle of the day is the surest way to be prepared for the work that rnust be done after lunch. Graduation from school is the Commencement of our real education. Our motto, He Who Hath a Trade Hath an Estate does not mean that you have acquired your full estate.of knowledge and skill when you graduate from this school. You have spent time and effort in getting an education, and now you are ready to put to use the things you have learned here. lf you have great talent, experience will improve it, if you have average ability, hard work will make up for your deficiencies. Your teachers have given of their best time and effort to prepare you for your life's work. Your parents have made sacrifices in order that you might receive a thorough education and training. The taxpayers have contributed generously to provide vocational education which is not available in the regular public schools. Now it is your duty to demonstrate to your parents, your teachers, and the citizens of Camden County that their efforts and sacrifices have not been in vain. I congratulate you on your graduation from the Vocational School. lt has been a pleasure to have had a part in preparing you to take your places in the world. I trust that your hopes and ambitions will be realized to the fullest extent. The automobile body worker must be a skilled mechanic in order to cut out damaged panels, weld in sections, and to refinish parts so that such repair work is practically invisible. The modern automobile body mechanic can take a badly wrecked car and repair it in such a skillful manner that the car looks as good as new. H. Williams and S. The iointers, band saws, planers, and sanders are highly specialized machinery. They give the worker, who has learned to operate them, great satisfaction when he sees furniture in the making. The school can boast of thorough training in the set-up, operation, and adiustment of the many cabinet-making and wood-work- ing machines. Instruction in bench work and the care of and manipulation of hand tools is also an important part of the training. Front Row lkeadlng left to rightl: C. Enderle, J. McDevitt, H. Paul, K. Burton, S. Wil lndustrial Chemistry and Laboratory Techniques The fast-growing custom of eating out creates a demand for well-trained employees by hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, and clubs. The course of instruction is planned to meet this demand and prepare students for employ- ment in various types of public food work. Preparing and serving lunch daily in the school cafeteria affords the students a splen- did chance to gain practical skills and knowl- edge in the art of cookery. Industrial Chemistry, a three-year course, is planned to prepare students for employment as trained chemical assistants in laboratories. They are taught the actual use of the various chemical and physical testing apparatus and techniques employed. Chemistry laboratory techniques, a one- year course, prepares students to use physical testing apparatus in both the laboratory and plant. They also learn good housekeeping and laboratory operations. They are given the opportunity to become familiar with the underlying principles of electrical equipment and drafting. They have frequent actual con- tacts with constructional details. Electrical Work Graduates from this course find many branches of the electrical industry in which employment can be found. Living as we are in a great electrical age, there are many opportunities for students who have learned wiring, motor assembly, winding, and testing. All of their work is performed on real equip- ment. The maintenance of the electrical equipment, and new installations in the school, is the work of this department. wu- I .lilv Fx' H. C X : Machine Shop Practice We are living in a machine age. Many changes are taking place in industry due to the progress in machine construction. Better and faster machines are in demand. Modern machine shops are required for the upkeep and expansion of production machinery. This has brought about an increasing demand for mechanics. lndustry is looking to the machine shop graduate to meet this need. The machine shop graduate has spent much of his time in machining and fitting together the parts of machines, dies, tools, and en- gines. Machine shop science, shop mathematics, blueprint reading, and sketching are part of preparation for this useful trade. Plumbing and Heating Comfort and convenience is the common desire of us all. In our homes we want modern kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, and heating system. Many skilled mechanics are required to install plumbing fixtures and heating sys- tems in modern buildings. The graduates are prepared to meet this demand. Careful training is given in the care and use of tools, the installation of water, drainage, and heating systems, together with related science, mathematics, blueprint read- ing, and drafting. Power Sewing Machine Operation The garment-making industry provides work for thousands of people. Any girl who becomes a careful and fast operator on a power sewing machine can be sure of plenty of work and good pay. The graduates are trained in the many operations of the trade.
