A complete list of activities of the Camden County Vocational School would fill much more space than can be alloted in this book. It includes Apprenticeship Training, Trade E X t e n s i o n Training, the rehabilitation of handicapped veterans and civili- ans, short Preparatory Courses for new workers in defense indus- tries, and courses in salesmanship and merchandising for workers in the commercial and distributive occupations. These courses are of great im- portance to the workers of this area and and to the community as a whole, for our greatest nat- ional asset is the skill of our peo- ple. Of prime importance is the work of our Day School, designed to replace the workers who. through promotion or retirement, leave the industry. Since the Day School opened in October 1928, over 14,000 stu- dents have been enrolled. In the same period about 1400 have graduated, or a ratio of one out of ten. When you look at the pic- tures of the 195.2 graduates, re- member that for each picture nine 'others tried to make the grade but did not. Why these boys did not make it would re- quire a lengthy explanation. The thing to bear in mind is that the graduates have made good and are deserving of more than ordin- ary praise. For a Day School student, graduation is the beginning of a career, a career which often leads Your Vocational School to an important post in industry. It is becoming more common for us to receive requests for grad- uates, from graduates who are now in executive and supervisory positions. Graduation from the C a m d e n County Vocational School assures not only a job, but a job which will lead to better and better jobs as the graduate adds experience to the foundation he laid while attending school. As he progresses, the graduate train- ed in correct trade procedures is an example to his co-workers who have not had the advantage of vocational training. Thus the in- fluence of the school extends over the whole trade. This year marks the first grad- uation in the Automotive Body Repairing and Painting Course. We expect that within a very few years the influence of the school will be felt in this field, as it has been in the trades now estab- lished. The work of a vocational school is constantly changing. New trades become standardized: old trades change as new materials and equipment become available. The Camden County Vocational School will continue to meet its dual requirements: to train adults in new skills, and to provide new workers properly trained in man- ual skills and possessing the abil- ity to adapt themselves to new developments and to upgrade others through eflicient leader- ship.
