How'm I doin'? Oh. I guess that I’m doin' fine. It's been so long now. yet it seems like it was only yesterday. Ain’t it funny how time slips away. How's your new love. I hope that he’s doin’ fine. Heard you told him that you'd love him till the end of time. Now. that’s the same thing you told me. seems like only yesterday. Ain't it funny how time slips away. The PSAT and SAT both badly timed on sunny Saturdays caused anxiety for some. A slow starting magazine drive caused many Juniors to worry about the fate of the Jr.-Sr. prom. The drive ended successfully however, and decorating was both work and fun. The dance was a highlight in a year that passed all too quickly. 1977 s Juniors will take on many new activities in the coming year which will add to the responsibility of being a 1978 Senior. VARSITY FOOTBALL The Bruins started their 76-77 season with nine returning players and a new head coach, Mr. Simpson. After leading the J.V. team to a conference title, Coach Simpson advanced to the varsity level. He was aided by two new assis- tant coaches, Mr. Bobby Belfield and Mr. Sammy Kramer. Although they won only 2 of 6 conference games and 3 of 9 games over-all, there were many high- lights for the Bruins. One was defeating arch-rival Currituck 20-16 in conference action. With this win the young Bruins revenged a 12-6 loss to the Knights ear- lier in the season. Below: Canden s offense sputters on fourth down try. Below: Both teams take a break from action. Captain Donnie Jones trots off the field to join fellow cap- tains Moses Thornton, Rex McCoy, and William Jones. Thirteen of last year’s J.V. players moved up to the varsity leaving a team made up predominantly of freshmen and inexperienced players. However, this year’s young Bruins established a surprising record despite their inexperience. Under the di- rection of a new head coach, Mr. Sammy Kramer, the jayvees ended the season with a 3-3-1 overall record. One reward for practice and effort oc- cured when the team won two games against arch-rival Currituck. Another exciting win took place against Murfreesboro, who had defeated the jayvees earlier in the season. Next year's Bruins hope to surpass this year's mark by win- ning the conference championship. Their dreams rest on the shoulders of the returning lineup. J.V. BRUINS Hey, that's my football. Give it here! Left: Where did everybody go? Right: Ricky fades back to pass. Come on guys, follow me! The varsity cheerlead- ers were able to attend cheering camp during the summer of 76. At camp they received the highest spirit award. The Spirit Megaphone, and returned home in- spired to support our teams enthusiastically. Hard work and help from Mrs. Malco. the advisor, enabled the cheerleaders to spon- sor the homecoming celebration. OlLULUOC_ILU OLiJCEC D J.V. Although second year Varsity coach. Donnie Simpson, found himself with six return- ing players, the Bruins won only four of twelve regular season games to finish sixth in the con- ference. Two highlights of the season for the Bruins were defeating 3-A power Edenton and having William Bogues selected to the Al- bemarle All-Conference squad. Below: Lionel Eason hawks Edenton player. BRUIN GIRLS The Lady Bruins were undefeated through their eleventh game this season. The girls, with a 10-2 conference record, shared the conference co- championship with Perquimans. The Bruins were Albemarle Conference Tournament runners-up. They advanced to the 2-A District I Tournament and emerged as winners with a record of 17-3 for the season. Baseball — 1976 The 1976 baseball season under the di- rection of head coach, Mr. Sammy Kramer, proved to be a successful one. The Bruins compiled an 8-4 overall record and claimed second place in the confer- ence. The highlight of the season was the defeat of Knapp in a tough game which the Bruins won 2-1! All-conference pitcher, Keith Dean, pitched a one-hitter and Gary Ambrose knocked in the win- ning run to seal the win. Infielders Hal Abbott and Gary Ambrose were also named to the all-conference roster. Re- turning starters for the 1977 season are F.D. Harrison, George Wilson, Hal Abbott, and Wallace Basnight. 91 to N GIRLS’ SOFTBALL — A NEW START The Lady Bruins began their first con- ference softball season in 75-76. Many surprises occured during this first year. The team not only exhibited strength, but they also showed de- termination and drive. Other opposing teams found that winning was not something to take for granted when they were battling the Lady Bruins. All the games did not result in a Bruin victory, but everyone was proud of the fighting spirit that was displayed. The Lady Bruins improved steadily throughout the season. All the players except one will be returning, and the girls will be hoping to gain the con- ference title this season. CONTRIBUTIONS Albermarle Welding Ambrose Furniture Apothecary Shop Barr Bros. Freshmen sport painted faces as a result of their initiation into high school. Sweating football players practice diligently, while the cheerleaders polish their most encouraging cheers. Studying begins in earnest as students are challenged by new classes and freshmen and new students are entertained at a tea. DECEMBER November and December held both happy and unpleas- ant moments. Signing up to run for class offices, dec- orating the tree, and riding in the parade brought smiles. The first snow of the season caused students to fill the air with shouts and laughter There were pensive expressions on our faces, however, when we learned that the old portion of our building, built in 1926, had been condemned. We had to move students and teachers to other locations. Everyone hopes that there will be a new building soon. From intramurals to homecoming, January February were filled with ac- tivities Mrs. Wescott's projects caused some cases of indigestion and a few migrane headaches.
