Senior Prophecy Looking through my slightly smudged and faded copy of the '53 STARS AND BARS, I see the pictures of Mr. 8 Mrs. Melvin Albertson. Of course, in her high school days she was known as Barbara Jane Brothers. They'mwe'so many children that Mel- vin couldn't tend to them and farm too, so Bobbie had to quit her typing job. And looking further through the book I see Jean Ball, which recalled to megmy conversation with our Senior homeroom teacher who had on a dress designed bythat exclusive designer, Fath, where Jean is now head seamstress and Jimmy is still keeping house as he did for her during her school days. I ran into Mable Jean Bray the other day and she was out of breath, as usual, from running around. Maybe one of these days she'll catch that certain man and settle down. Why look!! Here are Emmett and Gilbert Burnham. Rumor has it that they are now living on a big farm with their wives. Of course, Emmett is still doing the talking and Gilbert the listening. Here is a picture of Carolyn Forbes, who is now Mrs. Sanders. She is helping Garland with the farming. You should see her driving the tractor with the child- ren running along behind. Another classmate, Virginia Forehand, is living at Turnpike in Pe rqxlimeans County.Every Sunday night I see her parked on Main Street in a big Mercury. Some day she is going to fill it up with little Roberts . And here's Edna Hewitt and Dempsey Harrison. Remember how they used to go around together in high school? well, after Dempsey had served his hitch in the Army, he went back to Edna and after some careful thought she decided to accept him. They now have a prosperous business establishment and set of twins. And did you know that Stanley Riddick is about to have a nervoustmreak dwown traveling between South America where he holds down a job as eye doctor, and Bel- videre, where he has an institution to keep children from having popeyes, loud- mouths, and stubborn ways. Well, as I live and breathe! Here's Tommy Sawyer! He is the featured star of the National Globe-Jumpers. I hear that he married a rich heiress and lives in a penthouse in New York. Must be nice! Look!! Here is a picture of Joyce Southerland! She and E. W. finally made it. They haven't been married very long, though. Seems that E. W. had little matters to settle with the Air Force. Ann Tarkington hasn't changed since this picture was taken. She lives at Wedmv ville now. I understand that Carolyn Forbes is teaching her to drive a tractor. To think she used to know so little about farming. This photo of Billy Upton is just like him. He's the owner of the Derltyne Chewing Gum Company and also the Klien Candy Co. I must write to him sometim e and remind him that I still like candy and gum. He used to be very generous with it. While keeping my appointment with Dr. Kazquotsy Ritzz, I saw Gladys Williams who is now his secretary and is she piling in thernoney. This picture of Maurice Williams really brings back memories. After driving that school bus a few years ago,he just couldn't do anything else. He now drives a big bus for some company.Just the other day I was reading where he was awarded a medal by the President of the U. S. for having the best record for safety. Remember how quiet Shirley Williams used to be? Well, she got married a few years ago,and she's been yelling at her husband every since. I don't know wh at his name is but he certainly is good looking. Senior History Since the graduating class of 1953 is made up of students who began their high school careers at both South Mills and Elizabeth City, the class has had a dual history during its first three years of high school. We have decided to present these two groups separately. SOUTH MILLS Never shall we forget the day we entered high school! when school began in 19749 there was present a group of the greenest, most unsuspecting freshmen ever. This little group was none other than we who are seniors today. We felt quite grown-up and important following a regular schedule and changing classes. This was all new to us at the timeg but at last, after four years of it, we have become accustomed to what is going on. Happy and carefree we started up the hill, strivingalways to reach the peak-- GRADUATION , To us it seemed this day would never come. To help us through our first year of high school we had Mr.Paul Bowers,M1ss Doris Dozier and Mrs. Mabel Helwig. Most unpleasant of all the happenings of that year was exams, but somehow we finally pulled through. Our work seemed harder as we continued to become sophmores. We now studied more subjects with a different instructor for each. Mr. Stanley E.Matthew, Mr. Soule C. Chandler, and Mr. Herman T. Dilday are due the credit for pulling us through this year. During our sophmore year we entertained the Senior Class at a party held in the school library.Exams d1dn't seem to bother us much now and we enjoyed high school life more. Juniors at last!!! Now we had two things to work on: a Junior Play and the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our play, entitled n0ur Gal Sal' was given. We had fun getting the play ready and Mrs. Gladys Chaffin helped us some, but we were left with most of it to do ourselves. Preparing and presenting the Junior-Seni.or Banquet was probably the most important event of the year,we were very anxious to have it be a success. The abundance of good food, a progrmm of enjoyable music and the attendance of our speaker, Mr. N. Elton Aydlett, made this an occasion we shall long remember. We completed our Junior year wMH1theguidance of Mr. Philip Meekins, Mr. Dennis Basnight and Mrs.Norman Shannonhouse. During our first three years of high school we lost several members of our class and gained one, Stanley Riddick, who came from Perquimans. But the biggest step was yet to come-- OUR SENIOR YEAR! ELIZABETH CITY One day in September of l9h9 there descended upon Elizabeth City HighSchool six of the weirdest looking characters imaginable. There were two boys frmm Old Trap, Dempsey Harrison and Maurice Williams. The other four were girls---Jean Carolyn Sawyer, Mable Jean Bray, Carolyn Forbes, and Ann Tarkington. They came from Belcross and Camden. After the first day in the strange school that was full of mmange butfrimuk ly people,we could take off the cheap perfume and gaudy lipstick that thecele- brating sophomores had so liberally decorated us with. That is, we could hy to take it off. Some of us sported pink and streaked faces for a few daysafter- wards. Our first year in Elizabeth City found us enrolled in various classes ofour own choice. Among these were Home Ec., Shop, Science, and Latin. Of course, we were required to take Civics and English. Although we had a few rough tinms during our Freshman year,we really had to burn the midnight oil when we become Sophomores, for now we had to takefhology. We shall never forget all those horrible animals we had to dissect and draw. The next year was full of important events, so were our dear old American History books. That year we gave our Junior play, Dear Ruth, which was a huge success. We also sponsored a big Leap Year Dance and a highly successful maga- zine drive. The purpose of all this was to raise money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. When the big night arrived we dressed in our prettiest clothes ar1d went to the Virginia Dare Hotel and had a delicious supper. Later there was a big dance which we could attend. When school began in the fall of l9S2,we came to a brand-new school andwere graciously welcomed by our super1ntendent,Mr. Pugh, and our busy principal, Mr. Meekins. Some of the things we especially liked were our big gy n, choosing school colors and symbol, and naming our team. We also had the pleasant task of helping to name, edit, and publish our yearbook, the first for this school. we feel that it is a special privilege to be members of the firstgraduet - ing class of Camden County High School.
