The Veterans Club was formed in October, 1968 in order to unite the veterans wishing to further their education. Since the formation of Chi Gamma Iota Fraternity on campus, its members have been actively attempting to make it the best organization on campus, through social functions from parties to talent shows. Members of the sorority have done volunteer work with emotionally-disturbed children at Erial School. This work involved a play-therapy program and a picnic given for the children. The main objective is to share ideas, songs, and instrumental techniques with other students. Also to teach beginners the rudiments of folk music through the use of workshops run by students already accomplished in the folk idiom. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in any aspect of folk music and want to share his or her ideas and to learn from others. Not only did the team finish a strong second in conference play with a fine 13-4 record, but their 15-6 overall record enabled them to be chosen for the Regional Tournament played in Hagers- town, Maryland. They shut out their first six Q61 opponents and only gave up 7 points all year while scoring 118. They were runner-up in the Eastern Regional Tournament and earn- ed a trip to the National Finals in Ocala, Florida, where they finished in 12th place in the 39 team field. Ed Manning went un- beaten and ran his two year unbeaten streak to 26. Through the run- ning of many hundreds of miles over roads, hills and sand in every kind of weather, this rugged training has provided an- other highly successful season for the Cougar harriers. Through the able coaching of Mr. Dennis Hurley the run- ners have compiled a remarkable 37-0 record under his leader- ship. To this they have added the Garden State Junior College Championship for the second year and have attributed several Invitational Championships to their successes. The prospect of next year's season looks very bright since the top runners were all freshmen this season. Several of the opponents were nationally ranked with one finishing third in the National Playoffs. Defensive standouts, along with the co-captains Jon and Aldo, were George Tait, Peter Mercado, Tony Samulis, Larry Maggi, Dennis Boyle, Mauddi Mauddi, Tom Sparks and Bill Kelly. The offensive unit, who averaged over two goals a game, were lead by Carmen Baggiano with 12 goals and one assist, and Dave Rauer, 8 goals and 6 assists. Other forwards were W. John Murray, Jr., Roger Ennis, Dave Southard, Jeff Reader, Jerry Bonawitz and Wasfi Omair. The goal tending duties were shared by Frank Schillig, Dave Southard and Felix Garcia. The average number of saves per game was 12.2 with the opposi- tion averaging four goals a game. Joe Nowak was in charge of athletic training and managerial duties. The Cougar's 14-4 conference slate enabled them to capture third place in the GSAC's Southern Division. The Cougar's were racked by injuries to key play- ers throughout the year perhaps the most serious coming to Region XIX All-Star Joe Issertell and Team Captain Brian Madden. Camden Countyls misfortune didn't end with injuries as the Cougafs dropped five of their games by a total of 10 points, three of these losses coming in conference action. The Cougar's defensive play was again noted by their being named as one of the top three teams defensively in Region XIX and missing the top ten national by only a point. Those honored in addition to Issertell were, Dave O,Brien as a Region XIX All-Star and Brian Madden who was a GSAC All-Star nominee. The 1970-71 wrestling season was highlighted when the mat men walked away with first place in the Massachusettes Institute of Technology Invitational Tournament. This was a building year for the Cougars with six freshmen in the standing line up. In spite of this the grapplers were able to establish twelve new school records. The team was led by captain Gene Barber who compiled his second undefeated season, making his career record 27-0, eighteen of these were by pins. His lec- ture was entitled Life is Worth Livingu. There was such an overwhelming crowd that a closed circuit T.V. was set up in the Gym to accommodate the excess crowd who could not fit into the auditorium. The crowd consisted not only of the students, but also of the members of the community. Among being one of the best speakers here at our college, he has also published several books and has more in preparation. Max Lerner, noted syndicated news- paper columnist and one of America's out- standing political scientists presented a lec- ture at Camden County College on Novem- ber 20, 1970. Dr. Lerner has written exten- sively on law, politics, and social theory. His classic work, i'America As A Civilization is used as a basic text in many universities throughout the world.
