Homecoming Court '86: Kathy Koszowski, Dana Richards, Lisa Strippoli, Delia Alameda, Colleen Bennett iQueenb, Amelia Abbruzzese, Liz Vigrass, Renee Wilson, Yvonne Rodriguez, Sandra Hussey. The culmination of Spirit Week has always been the Homecoming Pep Rally. This year, emcees Kevin Gillece and Mike Trigiani took matters into their own hands and organized an event that gave new meaning to that term. The traditional football team speech started off the Homecoming spirit, accompanied by the usual screams and yells from appreciative fans. Next, the Baby Bottle Contest! Contestants thrust their heads back and slurped at a furious pace. The winner, Gabe Picknally, is now the proud owner of the title Biggest Baby. Then, we saw a graphic example of goings on at Paul VI. The CCHS faculty whipped the Eagles' faculty in a game of simple intelli- gence. The winners were more than happy to share their prizes with their less than fortunate opponents. TO close the pep rally, a new Homecoming Queen was announced, Colleen Bennett took her crown amid riotous applause, and with pride, dignity, and a few tears. Don't you think you're a little old for this? The winner of the Baby Bottle Contest is lohn Picknally! 23 Spirit Rains on Camden Catholic The CCHS gym was bursting with enthusiasm and spirit as the Fall Sports teams were honored at the first pep rally of the year. There was no raining on this parade as emcees Pete Dickinson, Mike Trigiani, and Kevin Gillece led you to believe. Decked in overcoats, galoshes, and toting personalized umbrellas, the guys did their own version of Walking in the Rain that shook the student body to the core. Each team sent their captains to center stage to drum up support and introduce team members. The Irish cheerleaders once again stole the show with their sizzling routine, igniting the students into a spirited frenzy. The band followed and kept the fire burning strong. When the end came, all left with great anticipation about the upcoming sports season. With such an inciter, who could blame them? Expecting a sudden shower? Goodbye, Summer, Hello September! Lisa, Sheila, and Chris Ah, September! The mere mention of the month brings fond l?!! thoughts of school, homework, tests etc. Not exactly what the average student wants to think about after a long, carefree, lazy summer. CCHS has the perfect solution to this dilemma. The annual Kick-Off-Dance!! Sporting all facets of the fashion world from preppy to trendy to outrageous, the students came to the September 26 affair. Spinning the latest tunes was Camden Catholic's very own deejay Brian Fitz- patrick. Aided by Sue Black and leff Gosnear, he turned the packed cafeteria into a pulsating arena of dancers. Although it's doubtful that the dance erased summertime memories, it certainly catapulted the student body into the school year with a feisty, spirited thrust! ,Z i i it Kelly and Tucky kick off the year. Save the karate for home, joe! 'Y The three musketeers - Kevin, Pete, and lohnnie Too cool to dance? Drive for Life On December 2, l986, the Health Careers Club pulled its forces together and helped collect 87 pints of blood in the annual American Red Cross Blood Drive. The drive proved to be the culmination of weeks of recruiting donors from faculty to students to even parents. Despite various reports of dizziness and lightheadedness, the donors felt the discomfort was more than worth it. After all, it isn't every day that one gives something that can save a life. And they even got free donuts! Pat Giannini prepares to give blood. Give me tomato iuice! Are you sure this won't hurt? L The Red Cross Blood Crew N if 33 A Campaign Celebration For the freshmen class, October I7 was not merely another Friday night. Hardly. Rather, it symbolized the first all-freshmen function - the Campaign Dance. Hoards of ninth graders flooded to the cafeteria to dance, socialize, and most of all, discover the results of their first election. A weeh of intense campaigning culminated in voting that afternoon, and the crowd anxiously awaited the outcome. To their delight, Marisol Serrano garnered the position of governor, and Iennifer Gorman won the lieutenant governor title. Also worthy of hudos are senators Toni Helber, Iohn Brady, ludy Berch- man, and lennifer Plumley. Tom and Michele The Sophomore government pulled out all the stops for the Class of'89's annual Gotillion. They transformed the usually drab cafeteria into a spectacular arena of glitter- ing tinsel, flashing lights, and pulsating sounds, To enhance the magical atmosphere, the Sophomores danced the night away to a variety of romantic ballads and upbeat club music, spun by DI Brian Fitzpatrick. Puttin' On the Ritz was the appropriate theme for this gala affair, as the Sophs sported their flashiest semi- formal attire. It's a title that students covet, a realm they yearn to enter, and on November 21, 1986, the Class of I988 officially left behind the undistinguished world of underclassmen. After the special liturgy, planned by the Christian Ministry class and said by Fr. Os- inshi, a reception was held. Amid dancing and eating, the juniors raced about, turning rings, having theirs turned, and heeping close count of those turns until that special someone locked the ring with the 88th twist. Every fall, CCHS plays host to representatives from over 100 schools of higher learning. September 1986 was no excep- tion. The gym was transformed into a marketplace of colleges, as juniors and seniors vied for space, brochures, and questioning opportunities. As usual, Fr. Hart engineered the evening with remarkable organization and ef- ficiency, and should be con- gratulated for yet another successful College Night. Honor Society Inductions On May I3, I987, the famed Camden Catholic auditorium housed the annual, equally famed Honor Society Inductions. This ceremony served to laud the academically ambitious and successful students of CCHS. Open House '86 - Welcoming New Friends On November 12, 1986, Camden Catholic once again opened its doors to local 7th and 8th graders. The reason? Open House, of course! Attached to each flower were messages of friendship, affection, and, most appropri- ately, love. Flowers were sold and sorted by hard working student government members, and were hand delivered with fragile care by various CCHS Cupids. These latter were adorned in less than typi- cal Cupid fashion - Garfield and hearts, suspenders and hearts, and tutus and hearts, to cite a few wardrobes! Highlighting the considerable talents of the chorale and band, the concert also featured a new twist- a dance troupe. With these lines, one of Camden Catholic's finest musical performances ever began. An outstanding cast, headed bg senior Brian Fitzpatrick, underwent hours upon hours upon hours ofgrueling rehearsals in hopes of maintaining the Tradition of high caliber Camden Catholic plags. None of this could have been accomplished, of course, without the devotion, hard work and patience of director joe Farina, assistant director Donna Rgan, and choreographer Linda Denne. This trio somehow managed to transform thirtg-odd high school students into the professional, polished cast who evoked such powerful emotions with their perfor- mances. Mr. loseph Gianfortune is also to be acknowledged for his expertise musical direction, as is the band for their instrumental talents. Behind- the-scenes efforts should not go uncredited, for the plag would be lack- ing without the work ofstage crew, prop crew, costume crew, and make- up crew. Thanks to the coordination ofall the above mentioned, Cam- den Catholic's F iddler on the Roof will be remembered for gears to come as one of the best shows this school has ever done. Mazeltov! The Fighting lrish's athletic department kicked off CCHS's centennial celebration with a success story that read 5-4, and witnessed one of Camden Catholic's most dynamic seasons! New head coach Dave Capozzi aimed for aifl by emphasizing discipline and a positive attitude throughout the grueling autumn scrimm- ages. The team responded, and, under the leadership of captain Brian Krulikowski, marched to the Irish 's first back to back winning season in 20 years. Able abettors along the offensive line included Troy Shorts, Mike McKay, and Mike Wheeler. Defensive lineman Brian Krul Krulikowski found powerful allies among seniors Brian Bonomo and lohnnie Grimes, and they checked last year's Olympic Conference National Division champs Deptford 28-0. CCHS ended the hard-hitting season with a holler by shutting out arch-rival Paul Vi, I4-O in the annual gridiron grudge match, otherwise known as Homecoming. The victory over the Eagles bookended the season with shutouts that earmark the 1986 season. Cross Country Takes the Road to Success ln l986, the Boys' Cross Country team traveled the long, hard road to success. The season, sprinkled with victory but also defeat, culminated with the team's fourth place finish, their best ever. Seniors Ieff Long, Nancy Long, Kim Landis, Dan Vause, and Rich Marnin bid a fond farewell this year, but up-and-coming underclassmen runners are more than able to fill their shoes. luniors Ioe Schmidt, Sean Kane, lohn Fee, Brendan Harkins, Mike Clipper, and Carl Latini ran personal bests all year, and with sophomores Mike Bosco, Iohn Louden, and Ed Dodd, the team should have a fine nucleus for next season. Also in I986, CCHS gave birth to the Girls' Cross Country team. Although lacking enough members which caused them to forfeit some matches, the team pulled victories whenever possible. When an outsider looked at the '86-'87 boys basketball team, two words popped into his mind - young and inexperienced But after watching them all season, he'd have to change his mind to determination and heart. Nowhere was that displayed more than in their victory over Edgewood, a top I0 team. Each team battled hard, and with time winding down and Edgewood up by l, the Irish threw up a desperation shot that caused a tumult - Irish win by l. The best regular season game played by the Irish was an emotion packed bout against Paul VI. This game, dominated throughout by CCHS, was made even more memorable thanks to an NYT TV crew who televised it. Captains Iohn Figueroa and Casey McKee showed their leadership all though the year and provided excellent role models for the younger teammates. They also assisted Coach Crawford in preparing for the play-offs. This post season action found the team and a few dedicated fans iourneying to Red Bank for the first round. An exciting, nail-biter of a game, it eventually saw CCHS take home the victory. The second round wasn'tquite as lucky for the Irish, as they lost to Paul VI. Next year holds promise, though. Still in its infancy when compared to other CCHS sports, the team managed to rach up a respectable Con- ference record of 5-7. Despite the absence of senior members, the team entered matches with the con- fidence and enthusiasm usually laching in young squads. Captain Tracy Gregorio was aided in the singles department by Lisa Calabria and Shannon Kueny. Doubles team, Keri Whalen and Colleen Burns, and second doubles team, Theresa Gaffigan and Megan Faulh also strove for excellence. Seeds of future tennis success are clearly evident in the l.V. team led by len Harhins and Colleen Carey. With the experience of this year firmly under their belt, the girls looh forward to a 1987 season filled with victories. The Irish are always ready. Coleen. Burns, Sherry Mehosh, 2nd Row: len Harhins, Shannon Kueny, Lisa Calabria, Tracy Gregorio Fran Capobianco lmgr.l 3rd Row: Theresa Gaffigan, Keri Whalen, Colleen Carey, Megan Faulh A great return by Lisa. Tracy shows good form We'll lei you out soon, Col. Boys Tennis 87 Best Season Yet The 1987 Boys Tennis team did not see many wins this year, but it did manage to chalh up its best season since its conception two years ago. Coach Wally Brown did much to bring about this achievement, despite an often damaging too-small roster. Led by captain loe Levy and his fellow senior Bob Donahue, the team also fea- tured sophomores George Morris, Luhe Scanlon, Gary Weigand, Ed Dodd, And Rich Tobin, and lone freshman jeff Patti. Hopefully, next year will bring new members and a more successful season. George Morris Rich Tobin Ioe Levy 113 Q CLUBS ,Q . Yes, these pages which you now leaf through came as a result of incredibly hard work and equally incredible lack of organization. Despite a staff that often had the curious habit of disappearing when help was needed, layouts were completed, copy was written, pictures' were identified, and pages were typed, S i 1 Of course, there are many people to thank, including a few whose work was indispensable. Monica Macys, our assistant editor, did a fantastic fob. Whenever something needed to be done, she cheerfully and willingly did it, and lthis is importanti, she always did it right! She was, perhaps, the onebastion of organization on the staff. Lou Melchiorre, the senior section editor, deserves much thanks for all his hours land hoursi of hard work. Despite the fact that he had no experience, he and Lisa Naughton managed to create the senior section, which was, to be sure, no picnic. Activities editor Roseanne Watson deserves thanks for all her last-minute layouts, especially the play! Business editor Chris Wagner set right to work organizing baby pictures and the yearbook sale, doing a simply wonderful fob of taking care of things everyone else wastoo busy to even think about. Not to slight the photographers, of course -- they were a tremendous help, for without them, the yearbook would not exist. Our advisors, Mr. MacDonald and Mrs. Rowe, were really wonderful this year, putting up with what seemed to be utter chaos. Donna and Steve from Merin Studios deserve kudos galore for their help and patience and liberal extensions ofdeadlines. lHeavan knows we never made one on time.J We would also like to thank Maureen Mohantg who wroteiiso much of the copy in this book. Her work and willingness to take on last-minute assignments is truly appreciated. Mike Miller lsee, told you you'd be mentioned D was also a big help, identifying pictures until he was practically stir crazy, Thank you, Mike! Thanks also goes to all the members of thestaff who-stuck by and persevered, especially Kim and Tracy .Henry and Margie Elberson, . vl1. - eg We hope you enjoy this yearbook, and hope you appreciate all the long lendless?i hours that went into it.
