Ceremony of Consecration As a tribute of our filiul gratitude we dedicate the 1958 Cathedral Spire to you, our Most Reverend Bishop. During the short year you have heen shep- herd of this diocese, your kindness and tender solicitude for our spiritual and temporal well-being have caused us to regard you as a loving father upon whom we can rely in all our necessities. May our sincere loyalty and persevering practice of the doctrines of Holy Mother the Church prove that we are ever your obedient children. For you and with you we pray 'LMARIA AnvocATA Nosrmf' W! 1207152 af 52 5131941206 FROM THE BEGINNING of Christianity the Cross appeared in homes as an object of religious veneration. Probably it was also used by primitive Christians to distinguish one another from the pagans. During his campaign against Maxentius, Constantine saw in the heavens a luminous cross bear- ing the words, in this sign thou shalt conquerf, This symbol was placed upon his banner and under its protection he defeated the enemy. To Constantine's mother, Helena, is attributed the honor of discovering the true Cross in Jerusalem. hllliylbdw MOST COMMONLY AND PROPERLY the words 'asign of the Cross are used of the large cross traced from forehead to breast and from shoulder to shoulder. This cross recurs many times in the liturgy of the Mass and in nearly all the ritual offices connected with the sacraments and sacramentals and in the solemn dedication of churches. heW.s'afzzzQ THE SIGN OF THE CROSS is a profession of our faith, faith in that Christ who by His death upon the Cross pointed out to us the way to eternal life. From earliest Christian times the Cross has been the symbol of the principal Christian virtue, the victory over the passions, and suffer- ing for Christ's sake and in union with Him. As we begin and end each day with this sign, may we recall our religious training and resolve to practice our faith until we rest in our crucified Saviour. X . ,Q umm 'K I fffi g L55 142 my ,QE 2.
