s mil.- ,Q . . History of Coat oi Arms T THE right side of the shield identifies the New Diocese of Camden. This part of the shield being the jurisdictional side, the Bishop assumes on it the insignia of his diocese, here represented by three elephant heads originally on the shield of that of Lord Camden for whom the city is named. As used by Lord Camden the three heads signify power, fidelity, and sagacity, respectively. The cross above each now transfers the same qualities to the spiritual order. The crescent at the top represents heraldically the Immaculate Conception, which is the title ot the Cathedral of Camden. On the personal side of the coat of arms, the gold cross running saltirewise athwart a field of red is the cross of Saint Eustace, who was a martyr. The trefoils are in compliment to Cardinal Hayes, whose coat of arms shows three shamrocks. The star at the top declares the present Bishop's devotion to the ever Blessed Virgin Mary. The motto translated reads: Glory to God Alone . - t .'m QA
