An hour off on Sunday while the Chaplain prays That this volcano we ride won't blow us to hell And to give thanks for the outcome of the Hancock flail Though our guns never fired a lethal round And we've never been deafened by battle's sound And we've never tracked NllGs over NVN skies We've fought the war with the rest of the guys With hoses and burtons and CH46's We've socked it to the sons of bitches Who ride out here for a few weeks glory While we do the work, it's the same old story A lt's been nine months, three seasons of the year Since we've seen the people, and things we hold dear But CANlDEN's a special ship, and we're a special breed The only ones who could fill the critical wartime need We're a special crew, unlike all the others Closer to our shipmates than our own blood brothers Career, reservists, or just passin through We'lI look back and remember the people we knew Soon it will be finished and our task will be done And our bow will swing eastward toward the rising sun Our hearts will grow lighter with joyous elation With Long Beach our Homeport, instead of Yankee Station We'll leave these Tonkin waters, but we'll leave our legend here The Sac will never match us, she won't even come near And when blue-water sailors gather with bottle of San lVlagoo They'll drink to CANlDEN's legend and to her special crew. 1 CAPTAIN JOE P. Q ti l ag I 1 sfls ' xx The mission of the AOE CAuxiliary-Oiler-Explosivesj is logistic support of combat forces of the U.S. Navy any- time, anywhere in the world. To accomplish this task, the AOE is equipped with the most modern cargo handling and transfer equipment. To demonstrate her capabilities, and to illustrate the fact that she is the largest type of auxiliary ship afloat consider these interesting statistics. 0 CAMDEN carries enough food and stores in her mas- sive cargo holds to completely stock 65 supermarkets for one month. 0 CAMDEN carries enough fuel C of all types Jto fill 966 huge highway tanker trucks or, were this all con- verted to regular gasoline, CAMDEN carries enough to supply 644 gas stations for one month. o In addition, CAMDEN carries as much ammunition as the largest ammunition ship afloat Cover three and a half millions poundsj. The emblem of CAMDEN CAOE-25 is derived fromthe city seal of Camden, New Jersey, the city where the ship was built, and for which she is named. The Coat of Arms in the center is a facsimile of the shield of the city seal of Camden, New Jersey. The right half contains a sailing ship, representing the city as a port of entry, and its shipbuilding industries. The left half is a replicia from the Coat of Arms of Lord Camden, after whom the city was named. Flexibility, Readiness, Endurance: CAMDEN's mot- to embodies the three characteristics the ship and her crew must possess to meet the logistic support chal- lenge the ship is designed to fulfill. The crossed sword and anchor in the background rep- resents her crew, both officers and men. The line border circumscribing all facets of CAMDEN's emblem empha- sizes the unity required for CAMDEN to function as an effective unit of the fleet. 0 CAMDEN also carries passengers to and from com- bat zones, many tons of mail and on regular deploy- ments she will transfer enough movies to furnish your local TV station with late-late shows for six years. The mission of CAMDEN is vital and her capabilities impressive. Her gigantic loads are handled andtransferred only by her crew. To keep the crew functioning CAMDEN carries enough food for four months, or to prepare almost 100,000 meals. During their deployments,CAMDEN's crew will consume as many Cokes and soft drinks in a month as the average drugstore dispenses in 22 months. They will make and use enough ice cream in a month to supply 10 drugstores. CAMDEN does as much laundryinaday as the average housewife does in a year. With great pride the crew of USS CAMDEN CAOE-29 realize that the U.S. Navy is capable of patrolling 7073 of the earth's surface primarily because of thejob they d0 in support and supply. During this deployment the Medical De- partment furnished routine and specialized Medical care to a crew of over 500. Often times H Division was called upon for Medical assistance by other ships operating in Southeast Asia QWESTPACD. These Med- ical emergencies ranged from adminis- tering brandy to an Air Force pilot whose iet was downed by enemy fire to pro- viding first aid to a man 1from another shipl who suffered a fractured skull and who was subsequentlytransferred by a CAMDEN helicopter to a nearby aircraft-carrier for more definitive treatment. While in WESTPAC over 6,000 patients were seen and over 5,000 prescriptions were filled. The laboratory also performed over 2,000 clinical lab tests and, to the con- sternation of many, over 3,000 innoculations were administered to the officers and men of CAMDEN.
