4d 4 ani aim ge CAMBRIDGE RINDGE AND LATIN. SCHOOL 459 Broadway dge, Cam] Massachusetts 02138 We the people that compose the class of 1989 are just like our country, diverse. Our class as representatives from nearly every country and race, and it is this diversity that helps stimulate us to become high achievers at whatever we do. To honor this diversity, we name our yearbook ‘KALEIDOSCOPE.’’ A kaleidoscope, through a scattering of colored glass, transforms the energy of light into many beautiful, symmetrical patterns. So it is, that the energy of the staff and students at C.R.L.S. transformed the dissonance of contrasting programs, interests, cultures, and race into ever changing but consistently harmonious configurations. The vibrancy and energy of the C.R.L.S. community is not only seen in its exceptional academic performance but is also visible in every corner of the school. Whether it is people socializing between classes in the halls, or carefully planning the senior trip in the student service center, the people of C.R.L.S. have always managed to achieve their goals, while at the same time enjoying themselves. Through a healthy interest in learning, a flair for resourcefulness, and a knack for having fun, the students and staff at C.R.L.S. have successfully reached a happy medium between work and play. We now present to you the class of 1989, the living kaleidoscope. The class of ’89 had their Junior Semi Formal last year at the Sheraton Commander Hotel. A great deal of work went into the preparation of that event, and considering the memories we hold today of that night, it was a success. Those who attended really got into the spirit of the occasion. Some people considered it to be practice for the Senior Prom and arrived in limousines while others wore very fancy clothes. The room where the event took place was painstakingly set up in pinks and whites, and the D.J. pumped out some fresh tunes like, ‘Da Butt,’ ‘I Want Your Sex’ and of course we can’t forget, “Two Occasions.’ The night was warm and a slight drizzle sprinkled down every so often as it sometimes does in New England in the springtime. Inside it was hot and we had fun, but soon it was over and the realization of the upcoming senior year was our next event to look forward to. Pei dancing with no hands HI THERE!! Not another picture Heading onto the dance floor 19 The Junior Class Trip The best of trips. . . The worst of trips. . . We met at five A.M. We all were completely unaware of what was to come in the next three days that we were to spend in Montreal, Canada. As the hours passed, we all grew more anxious to Get Off The Bus!!!! Little did we know then, that no sooner would we get off the bus than we would have to reboard again for the first of many mandatory tours of Montreal. There were many activities planned for us such as sight seeing, shopping and dancing. We would especially like to thank our Junior Class President for the memorable evening at the Governor’s mansion with fine entertainment and the unique cuisines which we all enjoyed with our fingers. It was an experience that brought our class closer together (both squashed on the bus and in the rooms) that we will never forget . or g g oo a gs8b igs a cert LT 4 aoe ee Bahamas This years senior class trip to Freeport Bahamas proved itself to be one of the best trips ever. With such activities as water skiing, para-sailing, jet skiing, and scuba diving, there was never a dull moment. We enjoyed hours by the pool, fun in the sun, and an endless supply of Bahama mammas! Al Ferreria Warden Advisor As the Warden Advisor of this year’s staff, I had to sentence everyone to a one year sentence of hard labor. This included many late evenings and a few weekends thrown in for good behavior. We did away with the traditional titles of position this year since most of the staff worked in several areas of production . On our most wanted list is Kim Makseyn, assisted by Suchi Mumford, for keeping our budget in the $18,000.00 range and knowing that if we were one day late with any deadline of the production the publishing company did not have to guarantee delivery before graduation. Also, on our most wanted list is Fred Centanni for recording all our financial transactions, a task none of us wanted. Four undergraduates, Gabe Daniels, Woong Soon Lee, Hsuan Tsen and Liam Toohey in the true spirit of community gave of their time and energy to help make this all possible. To all of you that made contributions both large and small — Thank you! Al Ferreria P.S. If I never see another slice of pizza, it will be too soon. Kimberly Makseyn, Editor in Chief Before working on the yearbook, I thought things like pressure, exhaustion and malnutrition were horrible things, but after working with you guys, I now know that they can actually be enjoyable. I feel privileged to have been able to work with such a wide range of students. I learned a lot from them, and we all learned a lot from each other. You are definitely the strangest bunch of people I’ve ever met! So. . . Jaime, Remy, Cory, Xenia and Bubby, keep typing! Gabe, Fred, Al, what can I say that you won’t answer. Liam and Hsuan, I know you're working! Ayanna, Alissa and Suchi, you guys saved the day! Woong Soon, thank you! Kim and Christina, use the rulers! Shut-up Jesse! Al relax. After a treaty was signed to eliminate certain nuclear weapons, 1988 was the year the efforts of there two leaders went into effect. It was one of the big marriages of the year. Heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson married actress Robin Givens. But the stormy marriage of the 22 year-old rich boxer and the 23 year-old beautiful actress lasted less than a year. She filed for divorce. But after being accused of marrying “‘Iron Mike’’ for his money, Ms. Givens said she wouldn’t take a dime. The summer of 1988 was hit with the worst drought in many years. Throughout the midwest, farmers watched helplessly as their crops went dry. 68 70 Girls Track: Surprise! vA} BRT pea This year the girls track team welcomed many new members and even though they were inexperienced, the team had a successful year, including a surprise. Michelle Earl and Maya Mauch (the Captain), were the only seniors on the team, Maya told us, ‘ The new talent has made this year special,’’ Probably because before the League Meet, the team was ranked in fourth place but with a little help from Deena this year, they placed second in the League. That was a surprise to everybody. Maya continued by saying that, ‘‘The spirit was good this year, but it took awhile to get the team united.’’ And united they were, crushing the weak on their conquest to victory. Boys Cross-Countr The boys cross-country team had yet an- other exciting year, finishing with five wins and only one loss. The future is very promising, since this years team will all be returning, with the exception of Monroe Hearn, the only senior. The team had a great showing at the OLP Invitational, Brown University In- vitational, Suburban League meet, to go along with a great season. The team was lead by three juniors, who were voted to the all-suburban team: Mat- thew Aldrich, Erick Andleman, and Brice Lindamood. ie ea” eee er ee a 2B tg wa ite ey Top Row (1 to r): Coach Bob Maguire, Erik Andelman, Monroe “‘Bubby’’ Hearn, Matthew Aldrich, John Crooks, Alex Hughes, John Yote, Tony Olivieri, Brice Lindamood, Coach Joe ‘‘Commander’’ Coady. Other team members included Kenetha Moore, Antoinette Smith, Stephanie Crayton, Gab- rielle Hall, Christine Donofrio, Lauren Dottin, Amy Pilavstiy, Angelique Smith, and Brie McDan- iels. As quoted by Coach Audrey Cabral, ‘This sea- son was a rebuilding one. Only two returning se- niors and two more with any varsity experience. Good luck girls.’’ BOYS BASKETBALL This has been one of the best years for the C.R.L.S. boys basketball team due to their com- bined talents, spirit and cooperation. Eric Rollins hopes to have one of his finest seasons yet with the team and Al Coccoluto, feels that they can do it because their greatest asset this year is the seniors. Coach said, ‘In my fourteen years of coaching at C.R.L.S. I haven’t seen a more talented team or a team with better work effort. Since last March, these young men have been dedicated to become the best possible team they could be. I believe they have obtained that goal.’’ The most meaningful game was the first victory over Brockton, one of their more com- petitive opponents. This victory was a real confi- dence booster which enabled them to carry a suc- cessful season. When this was published, their record was 15-1, and that in itself deserves a standing ovation. For the second year in a row the team finished in second place, in the Suburban League. The team was lead by our departing seniors: Maceo Bishop, Anthony ‘‘Dish’’ Borelli, and Roy Howard. Although they will be missed, the team will have a strong future, with some returning sophomores and juniors. Linda Town had nothing but praise for the team, saying “‘This is a great sport to coach, since it’s a team effort, and this group of kids are a team.’’ Girls Volleyball — Varsity Top Row (L-R) Sonya Went, Cindy Hobbs, Julie Gibbons, Christie Betts, Chrissey Giacobbe, Pam Villaroel Bottom (L-R) Maria Mantia, Capt. Spirits were high although spectators are not allowed on the course. The team considers this one of the building years for the sport, and hopes to get some new golfers in the future. The team was lead by seniors Carim N. Haroz and Mark Madden. ‘‘The team did not have a great year, but the kids pulled together, and that’s what really counts.’’, remarked coach Joe Pag. Good luck in the future. wt at 8 a ee - in Faen, ae Sc KAAQO Our hockey team started out with their skates on the wrong feet this year, but regained their strength as the season progressed. This year’s captain, John Roderick, feels that next year will be a better season for the team. Other seniors on the varsity team include Carim Haroz and Massimo Zannella. So, we say with pride that, despite the odds, our warriors did their best! 78 FOOTBALL The football team began their season with high spirits and hopes for a successful season. Led by coach Wadie Geraigery the team was ready to turn the Cambridge football program around. The most important elements of the team were spirit and devotion. Captains Ray Neves, Tony Wizzard Shawn Yard, and Matt Hagman all played majo r roles in keeping the team motivated through a very difficult schedule. Although the team was not victorious on the field, the real victory was within the team itself shown through the spirit and pride of the team. CHEERLEADING O55 The cheerleading Squad of C.R.L.S. Football eS and Basketball teams consist of nine cheerleaders that try to do their best in making C.R.L.S. “‘exciting.’’ Like all other teams they have their ups and downs, but they work them out together. This year’s squad is led by Senior Captain Leger Walcott. Other members of the squad are Seniors Dhonyale Jone s, Deborah Greenidge, Darcelle Lowe, Doreen Sorenson, Tasha Zamor and Juniors Robin Marshell, Luis McCrae and Vanessa House. According to Dhonayle Jones she feels this year’s squad made things change. This change became known when Luis McCrae became a cheerleader. Dhonayle feels this was not for the worst, ‘‘Luis made people realize that you can do anything you want and enjoy it.’’ The Cheerleaders really saw things in a respectable way and saw that he could make things very enjoyable and he did. What the Cheerleaders would like to say is that, ‘We are happy to have him.’’ To speak in general they feel cheerleading at C.R.L.S. was real! Good luck in future seasons. BOYS BASEBALL A NEW START The boys baseball team has undergone some changes lately, but the changes are hopefully going to be an asset to the team for a successful year. Last year was a ‘rebuilding’ year as quoted by the captain Scott McGaffigan. He continued by saying that last year they “ . . . had young people with no experience.”’ With determination and a strong eager group, the CRLS boys baseball team has high hopes to go far. 81 i™ (Top row L to R) Angela Petropoulos, Sarah Cooper, Aimeé Hendrigan, Megan O’Connell (Middle row L to R) Holly Leith, Shelley Goodhue, Sarah Entine, Mary Prahl, Jennifer Nangle, Rachel Roberts, Gretchen O’Connell, Phoebe Bela (Bottom row L to R) Allison Kelsey, Michelle McLaughlin, Maja Dublin, Margie Decker, Nicole Dettman, Alexei Nichols ee ) | sa eo Girls Swimming The Girls swim team had another positive season this year and is making a name for itself in the suburban league. The team was led by senior captains Jeremy Can- tor and Monroe Hearn. The excitement was given to the team by junior, Khari Milner, who broke six school records. With many talented underclassmen returning, next year’s season is sure to be a winning one. 83 Girls Soccer The 1988 Girls Soccer teams followed up 87’s success with another winning season. Led by Sub- urban League All Star seniors: Jessica Ferraro, Cap- tain Kari Hilsman, T.C. Cable and Captain Ana- belle Winne, the team rolled to a 9-8-1 season and nearly reached the state tournament. The junior var- sity team also had a fine season. Led by sophomore Sara Coleman and Maya Goldberg and Emily Rosen- berg, the J.V. demonstrated marked improvement throughout the season. Kari Hilsman, Suchitra Mumford, Jamie Duberstein, Christina Mcfadden and Susie Hicky were the varsity players this year. Their abilities ranged from ‘old pro’ to ‘new pro’ and although no mind shattering victories occurred, the team basked in the knowledge that they were slowly but surely establishing a name for themselves in the league. The backbone of the teams unity is the confidence and pride that Coach Jack Noble carries for them and hopefully the team will remain so after the Varsity team graduates. YS TENNIS The boys tennis team had its most successful year ever, making it to the State Tournament! ‘‘The team worked really hard and deserved to get to where they did,’’ remarked Coach Gay. The fall production, “Alice In Wonderland’ was a great success and was in some ways a reassurance that many fine drama students were still in the school. Some students that proved this belief to be true were, Matt Holland, who was one of three stage managers of the show. Also Ayanna Ashley, and Rich Giannino who were prominate senior figures in producing the technical aspect of the show. The fine quality of work that is expected by fans of the C.R.L.S. drama department, has lived up to it’s standards this year. 128 129 Dance Department Dance is an important branch of the creative arts at C.R.L.S. For the past nine years the drama department has produced an annual dance concert. The concert consists of dance pieces ranging in style from Jazz to Modern to classical ballet. Under the direction of dance instructor Barbara Ehrlich, students in the advanced dance classes work throughout the year to develop an original concert of their own choreography. The wide variety of dancing styles and pieces serves as an outlet to express the students thematic concerns and reflects the creativity of the students at Ce ReLS: 130 131 i The Music Department provides an The Music Dep artment opportunity for all students to receive a comprehensive music education. The performances and community service which contribute to developing a sense of responsibility in students are an integral part of the music activities. There is a myriad of courses consisting of choral, instrumental, and piano theory offered within the program. Throughout the course of the year, members have been involved in various concerts and performances, some of which include the winter and spring concerts, Kwaanza, and the Martin Luther King assembly. The jazz ensemble, gospel choir, the band, and the orchestra have been involved in these assemblies. With the help of the Music Department, this past summer, the Jazz Ensemble was fortunate enough to be invited to the Soviet Union to display their extraordinary talents. ASP SARA SRN UNE RL fe BE i ag Litho theg 132 The Philosophy of the Music Department It would be easy and require far less effort to perform many of the major classical works with a few selected students. However, we feel that it is far more important and of much greater educational value to allow and encourage as many students as possible to perform major works. Many schools select their most talented students for performances of this caliber, thus providing the quality experience for a few students but very little for the majority. With large numbers of students, quality of performance may not (or may) achieve the professional level we all desire, but we are talking about public school students — not professional performers. Our highest priority is the educational growth of all students with the concomitant development of their discriminative ability thus elevating their level of taste and appreciation through musical enrichment. The law of diminishing returns is quickly effected when educators place too much emphasis upon obtaining professional performance from only a few talented students. This type of training must and should rightfully take place in specialized institutions of higher learning where it is economically feasible. We are proud of the performances presented by our students and staff. We believe that our philosophy of music education is most effective in nurturing intelligent customers, producers, and or creators of music. 133 Senior Photographers Gillian Cohen — , Se ee 1% we Z Re ae et ie Gary Westphal Jaime White 134 Billy Covalucci — a Terese Gibson Allegra Kuhn Jason Agee HBS) Senior 4 uy A AE) Steven Kim “ FF ” f oY Lo Michele Percoco Sal Mancini 136 Art Work Neils Burger Rachel Signer Julie Bayle Steven Kim 137 138 Yearbook Theme In choosing our theme for the class of 1989’s yearbook, the yearbook staff wanted a message that truly represented the exceptional qualities of our school. Cambridge Rindge and Latin is a school of great diversity, consisting of students from 60 different countries. Traditionally, clubs, sports, and other organizations within the school have been a place for students of all nationalities to interact and get to know each other. Therefore, these clubs are symbolized by a thread of a quilt intertwining throughout our school. For this reason, we choose the patchwork quilt as the yearbook theme. The patchwork quilt consists of multi-colored squares representing all the people in our school. It signifies their different backgrounds, cultures, nationalities and personalities that make Cambridge Rindge and Latin a unique school. (008 EE ae] et oe ee s a wi! PLL ttt mae ioe OMT Me or wet aM rr Sem ast 3 a oe or meer + ) VATVERTI READ I Layee Amid tears and grief, thousands of people who had died of AIDS were memorialized in October in ceremonies centered on a huge quilt that as made from friends and family members of the victims. Each of the panels measured three feet by six feet and all 50 states and a dozen foreign countries were represented in the 375,000 square foot quilt. 139 140 The Jesse Jackson Speech The Patchwork Quilt Speech, made by Reverend Jesse Jackson, was unique and inspirational. The quilt symbolized diversity and unity of all people in the world. The speech which was made at the Democratic National Convention clearly portrayed minority interests present among the American people, as well as throughout the world. Another main point from the speech was that if people work together in one entity they can achieve any goal. His speech exemplified this theme which we are creating for our 1989 yearbook. C.R.L.S. CLUBS Cambridge Rindge and Latin, traditionally, has great participation from its students in its clubs. The diversity and unity within the clubs has given students the opportunity to work together and to learn from people of different ethnic backgrounds. Please consider that because of the large quantity of students en- rolling in our clubs, not everyone had the chance to attend the picture taking session. 141 House A Student Government e F.R. Mrs. McGrath, a native of Cambridge, taught at the Peabody school. In 1978 she was named director of elementary education in Cam- bridge, and assistant superintendent later that year. Mrs. McGrath earned her undergraduate degree at Salem State College and later furthered her education at Boston College and Westchester State College before beginning her teaching career in Burlington. She is also chairwoman of the Catholic Archdiocese School Committee Board of Education. Women in roles of leadership are important to all high school students. Our staff thought about the following quote captures the underestimated cap- abilities of women in our society. As quoted from Ann Richards, keynote speaker of the Democratic National Convention, “‘But if you give us a chance, we (women) can perform. After all, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, she just did it backwards and in high heels.”’ 169 TEEN HEALTH Goi NN | le Teen Health Center On September 22, 1988 the new Teen Health Center opened its doors with a celebration. Many people gathered for this event, including students, staff, parents and members of the community. This new center is a place where students can come with problems related to health, drugs, or sex. The original health center was moved from the fourth floor to the first floor. This shift was made to enlarge the office and to accommodate all of the students in one area. Even though some of the staff members are new, they are all working together to make the Teen Health Center the best it can be. ‘“‘Things have been coming along great so far and we all hope it continues,’’ said Sandy Moore, who has been working in the school’s health office for years. Marie Louis also added, ‘We are all qualified people who got the chance to make a difference, and intend to.’’ It is believed that this center will be beneficial to the students of the school. Marie Esposito, Dr. Murphy Pianska Kincey Karen Friedman — back, Betty Borghesani, Maria McFadden 170 Teacher Strike Potential Strike Senior Panic Every time the teachers’ contracts are negotiated there is some tension around settlements. This fall’s negotiations brought about the greatest fear in many years of an actual teachers’ strike and sent a wave of panic and tension throughout the school especially among the seniors. The option of a work to rule order or an all out strike meant no recommendations, extra curricular activities, or any form of extra help, which would greatly disrupt student life at C.R.L.S. For the class of 1989, either option jeopardized all aspects of what makes up a complete senior year. One positive result was students and teachers uniting to fight for a common cause. In the end an agreement was reached to everybody’s relief. hen you plan for the future, you start in@ the classresm. 66,000 strong, speaking with pride and one voice for education Massachusetts Teachers Associaton National Educaton AssiGepor it 172 A current issue which has united the students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin is the role that we as members of a strong student body can play in the fight against Apartheid. The groups that have been involved in promoting the movement are Cambridge Youth for Peace, the Black Student Union, the Haitian Club, and the Senior Class. They have worked together to educate their peers about the present situation in South Africa. The Apartheid Regime now controlling the country of South Africa, is a system under which the white ruling class has oppressed the black majority. In this system, the fifteen percent white minority controls over eighty percent of the wealth and resources of the country. Black citizens cannot travel from one geographic area to another without a special pass and can be detained in prison for long periods of time without notification of the charges. In that time, the prisoner may be subjected to torture, starvation, or worse. The gov- ernment also spends ten times more money for a white student’s edu- cation than for a black student’s education. In terms of democracy, only the whites participate in the decision making processes of the Government, although two token legislative seats are given to other racial groups. The reality is that the power lies in the hands of the fifteen percent minority. It is important to keep in mind, however, that the whites are not the evils in the society, but the actual system of government itself. Many whites have joined the black movement of liberation and have made a positive contribution towards ending Apartheid. Divestment, in its purest form, means total severance of all economic ties with South Africa. The divestment in the United States has generally looked towards large corporations as their targets. Although Coca-Cola has divested and is not directly paying taxes to the present government there is still a question as to how involved the company is. The problem that Cambridge Rindge and Latin is now faced with is whether or not the school as a whole should boycott the selling of Coca-Cola which is now available on the premises. The groups involved worked to organize a debate presenting both sides of the problem to help the students make an informed choice. One of the positive aspects of this sensitive issue was that we recognized the tremendous vitality that exists in our student body. At the time that this yearbook went to press, a final decision about the Coca-Cola controversy had not yet been reached by the members of the C.R.L.S. community. eH TURKEY DAY RALLY This year’s rally was successful in bringing out the school spirit that has always been present in past years. Senior class president Malcolm Mitchel, football captain Ramon Neves and coach Geraigery helped to lead the rally. All the fall teams displayed their pride at this annual exhibition. Although some seniors felt that enthusiasm during the pep rally had slightly declined in recent years, it is evident that spirit is still alive in C.R.L.S.! — ace = p- = — Z = arte me we Pe oe TT wae a HE OT TES 173 174 ADMINISTRATION Ass istant Principal Assistant Principal Elsa Wasserman Warren Ferzoco Principal Edward Sarasin Assistant Principal Director, R.T.V.P. It seemed as if Joe was always working: on the job, at his church, or for someone in need. For many years, Simeones’s Restaurant in Central Square was a gathering place for the whole Boston area. He often contributed his time and skills to worthy causes. Joe was kind and generous to his workers, his customers, and later, to his students and fellow teachers who will all miss him. — Michael Corless 197 4 a ee ALLL AES J. Smith Music M. There’s something in one’s life that can mean alot to him, and for me that thing is being a tutor in the C.R.L.S. Writing Center. C.R.L.S. Writing Center? What’s that? Well for those of you out there who haven’t heard about it, the C.R.L.S. Writing Center is a wonderful place to write your papers and essays and get help with them. Inside the big, bright room the key clicking sounds of computers are heard all day long. But the most important thing in the Writing Center is the tutors. They are always there and willing, ready to help you out on any problems concerning your paper. Being one of the tutors in the Writing Center, I feel proud. Tutoring is fun and the ‘eraikvare of usefulness is great. But the feeling of self confidence in my English abilities is the most important thing to me. Every session of tutoring in the past has given me more and more self confidence. Once I had to go to a workshop in Harvard University to tutor some freshmen from our high school. On the night before that, I was twisting and turning, couldn’t sleep. I was thinking, “‘God, why did I ever take this job of tutoring? Those students are only freshmen, but they’re all Americans. And I, a foreign student who has only been in this country for three years, am going to tutor them. Who am I kidding?” Next day at the workshop, after the students wrote their papers, it was time for group responses. The students were divided into groups of three, each with one tutor. The thought of being humiliated infront of the freshmen and the fellow tutors came through my mind thousands of times. With my heart pounding at the speed of light, I sat down in the group. I don’t have much confidence in myself. Just before the first student started to read his paper, I thought to myself, “Be calm. It’s all right, I’m just tutoring some freshmen. Although I have only been in this country for three years, I’m taking the Advanced Writing Seminar course now. I can at least teach these freshmen, can’t I?” So I readied myself, and took out my notebook and a pen. As the first student was reading, I concentrated on listening to his paper carefully and quickly wrote down some well said points. After He finished reading it, I started to give him feedback based on the things I wrote down. I analyzed his paper with him, explaining to him what were the strong points he had, and what were the weak parts that he had to cut out or improve on. I told him that writing a paper is just like composing a good piece of music. Don’t put garbage in it to just make the paper look longer, but instead present your ideas clearly so the audience will know what you are talking about. Then that will be a piece worth cheering about. Surprised by what I had just said and seeing the student taking the suggestions and revising his paper, I could just feel my confidence growing. Later on, with the suggestions I gave to the freshmen, they all improved their papers much better, and I had certainly enjoyed every moment of tutoring that day. Since that workshop, I have been doing great on helping students revising their papers in the Writing Center. Three years ago, I was just beginning to study English, and now I have become a Writing tutor. Tutoring is one of the best experiences I have had in C.R.L.S., because it has given me the self confidence of my English ability I need to conquer and explore my future. — Yi Sun STOP THE VIOLENCE It is a sad statement of society when this scene of pointless death is so familiar to each and everyone of us. What we need to understand is that violence is not something that we are thrown into. It is something tha t we and we alone propagate and it is something that we and we alone perpetuate. In essence we control it. What does this mean? It means that we alone can determine what we can and will live with. It means that we can choose not to live with guns and knives in our society. It means that we can choose to live in the security that we are safe in our neighborhoods. It means that we can choose not to live with the apprehension of violence and expect tranquility. We young people make up a minority of the population, yet when it comes to violence we make up the majority; the majority of the victims and the majority of the perpetuators. What you need to understand is what you are doing is staring down the barrel of a loaded gun and your fingers are on the trigger. Each time you fight, you squeeze that trigger a little more. And someday, someday soon that gun’s going to go off and death will be your only answer. We would rather fight ourselves than our enemies: Ignorance, prejudice, and hatred. We have become beasts to violence. We crave it with a hunger of unimaginable magnitude. Our call to glory is someone screaming the word “FIGHT”. God gave us the ability to think. Brothers and sisters let us use this ability to further ourselves and our peoples. We can make a stand before further deaths. PLEASE, STOP THE VIOLENCE AS-SALAAM ALAIKHUM Moacir Barbosa When Ears Whisper When ears whisper Lips listen And listen And ears whisper And minds stop loving And hearts forget to think right Tongues learn how to cut up Fists learn to fly People forget how to talk When ears whisper Karima Robinson 207 UTAHHH!.. . 89 208 li URN LEFT THIS LIGHT fos = This year, students from Cambridge Rindge and Latin embarked on their third annual trip to Salt Lake City UTAH. Ferzoco of Westwood, assistant headmaster of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, died January 20, 1989 at New England Medical Center in Boston after a long illness. He was 56. Born in Boston, he lived in Readville before moving to Westwood more than 20 years ago. He graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in engineering, and received a master’s degree in education from Boston State College in 1966. Mr. Ferzoco was the assistant headmaster of Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School for more than 20 years. Mr. Ferzoco was respected for his steady and consistent work with the principals at both the Rindge and Latin Schools. The staff appreciated his support and his sense of collegiality. The students benefited from his expert knowledge base and the personal interest that he brought to their development as young people. We will miss Warren as a school community and we are diminished by his loss.
