Cambridge | Rindge and Latin 4 School 459 Broadway Cambridge, Massachusetts 38 Cambridge Rindge and Latin — this must be the place. A place to learn, a place to socialize, a place to go when you have nothing better to do! (just kidding, Mr. Sarasin) CRLS is a common place — draw- ing students from all over Cambridge, the country and the world (and maybe a few from outer space). Despite our differences, we have been able to combine to form one strong body. CRLS is also a place for individuals. We have drawn upon our diversity to become separate and distinguishable figures within the crowd. We have proven that we are not “just another ‘brick in the wall.” Most importantly, CRLS is a place to learn. We are exposed to subjects ranging from Biology to German to Radio Broadcasting. We are also edu- cated by each other. We learn to communicate, to maintain friend- ships, and to hang outside of the school everyday at 2:30. The Class of 1987 is the tenth graduating class of CRLS. Along with the school, we have come a long way. We are now ready to face the world | prepared with the tools that CRLS has | given us — education, experience and the ability to dodge security guards. We wish luck to the Class of 1987 and all those to follow us. “Out of all those kinds of people You got a face with a view’’ — David Byrne Procrastination at its best CHEESE “Parlez-vous what?” “Is the Cafeteria cooking fish again?” “Wait, we're seniors, take a picture of us.” aR a Sab ee “Hi, I'm Michael the MOUSEKETEER.” Sexy and 17 “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the slickest of them all?” “Mom, come take me home.” a Paul threatens us with his menacing smirk. a “Five thousand words on the Russian Revolution? GREAT ADVENTURES, NJ The trip to Great Adventures began with a set of long sleepy faces at six o’clock in the morning in the library parking lot. The six hour drive to New Jersey was filled with laughter, dancing, and singing. We arrived at the amusement park at noon. Everybody went crazy at the sight of all the incredible rides and games. The park was beautiful, crowded, and exciting. The day was filled with screaming people having a great time on the rides. Around ten-thirty, many of us took a ride on the ferris wheel to see a breath-taking view of the illuminated park. A little past eleven, we took a final ride on the Bobsled, and had our last “great adventure”. “Yeah, we're bad!” 21 22 We Danced At The... “We know something that you don’t know...” PAAARTY SEMI-FORMAL : The Preteen Mafia “And then Ean spilled all of his dinner on my dress . . .” ‘i Coane | Ee on Mg _ ae 5 co. % te = = . ye ; = ad asad : a = Bring on the grub. The gala event of our junior year happened on May 16, 1986. the night was filled with beautiful dresses and sophisticated suits. Everything was great: The music, the service, and setting. Everything was fantastic except the food which was even worse than Alpo. After dinner, the dance floor was packed with rhythmic Steps to songs like the “Conga”, Prince’s “Kiss” and “I Can't Wait”. When relaxing time came we danced to songs like “Tender Love” and “Moments in Love.” The Class of 1987 danced the night away. The last song was “Always and Forever.” Everyone will always and forever remember this night. senioritis (Sse-nyer-i-tus)n. — A state of mind in which the affected suffers from chronic laziness, intermit- tent partying and severe relaxation, (often accompa- nied by persistent guilt). It is found only in high school stu- dents who are over-worked, over-anxious and over the edge. Senioritis is caused by three years of high school. The Causes Fall. Senior Year: There are classes to be passed, exams to be taken and choices to be pondered. For some the decisions focus around colleges, while others consider possible careers. The ex- citement of being Seniors (!) somehow gets swallowed up in the overwhelming amount of work during this season. The Class Trip, Prom and (gasp!) Graduation are mere specks of light at the end of the tunnel. Itis during this time thatthe unsuspect- = . ing seniors increase their susceptibility to Sof3 Pasir enioving the first term of the all-consuming Senioritis . . . Inku Kahn soaking up knowledge .. . Peter “K” reading his college folder. 24 Mid-senior year arrives and a strange thing starts happening to the victims of Senioritis: they begin to laugh, smile, and dare we say it — have a good time. LY - SYM b Mi Life looks pretty good now, except for the decision pressures like: Which classes will | go to today? or Which Sun Protection Factor is good for me in the Bahamas? For those suffering from this disease, the best advice is to wait and let Senioritis run its course. It is advisable to get plenty of rest (on weekdays) and take at least two parties a week. Try not to alienate parents, teachers and underclassmen — remember, they still live in the real world into which you will some day re-enter... Baring-Gould Early Fall, 1986, brought election fever, along with a multitude of campaign posters to CRLS. Seniors rushed first to the auditorium for the candidates’ speeches, and then to the ballots to cast their votes for their favorites. The result was the election of President Gladys Toledo, Vice-President Kevin Mitrano, Paulina Alves as Secretary and Treasurer Jon Baring-Gould. Congregating in the Student Service Center and lining the halls as doughnut salespeople, the officers helped to create a great senior year. Juniors, sophomores and freshmen (freshmen?) through their individual and whole class contributions, add to the dynamics of our school. Ah, underclassmen life! As a freshman you struggle to find your way around the school and its various social groups. This is your first taste of the Real World. “Thank God that’s over!”, You sigh as you enter your sophomore year. Suddenly the school isn’t as large as you thought it was. Weren't those upperclassmen much taller than you? You start developing social skills and characteristic hang-outs. That long-lost confidence begins to grow within you... Upperclassmen! You can't believe you're already half-way through your high school career. With the lowerclassmen to look down upon, you start to feel the power of your position. This social hierarchy isn’t such a bad idea when you’re almost on top! This section is dedicated to presenting the other CRLS inhabitants (for the first time ever!) in their natural habitats. 97 Juniors eee ads aan a sceemidenieeetanammmeamnemamem anaes ET 98 Juniors House C House D 99 Occupational Education 100 “Jake! Born in 1977, CRLS has endured some major difficulties in its short life. Prior to 1977 the city had two public high schools, Rindge Technical School and Cambridge High and Latin School. Each school had its own principal, adminis- tration, and sports teams. The rivalry between the schools was once seen as a healthy thing, but by the mid seventies a typi- cal Rindge-Latin basketball game would pit five blacks against five whites. Thoughtful people in the Cambridge com- munity began to see that there was a need to unify the two schools for the purpose of creating opportunities for cooperation rather than competition. The transition was not easy. Where there had been two faculties, there would now be but one. Many administrators were displaced. Law suits followed. The new “house” system was introduced. The old CHLS building was raised, the Arts Building and the Frisolli Field House were built. In January, 1980, a student was killed in a fight with a fellow student. Racial tension flared. The incident drew national attention. Many thought that the killing would mean the end of ef- fective public secondary educa- tion in Cambridge. However, all elements of the Cambridge community rallied to keep their school together. It is quite clear that visitors who come to CRLS in 1987 find a safe school where members of different races and creeds in- teract. We feel proud of what has been accomplished here, while we realize that there is still much to be done. To the graduates of our tenth class, congratulations. Keep the CRLS spirit with you. Officers Elected This fall, the seniors cast their votes to choose the class officers. Gladys Toledo was elected President, Kevin Mitrano Vice-President, Paulina Alves Secretary and Jonathan Baring-Gould became the class Treasurer. Together they worked to make the class of 1987 the best ever! Lukas Leaves One of the sadder parts of this year has been the departure of Mr. Lukas. He left his position as assistant headmaster of CRLS to become a school principal in Marblehead. After 17 years at CRLS, Henry Lukas greatly enriched this school and this class. “The Visit” The CRLS Drama Departments presentation of “The Visit” was a huge success. It was guest directed by Al Cremin, who together with the cast and crew, helped make it one of the best CRLS drama productions. CRLS Host to Soap Stars Visit When Brian Bloom, John Hen- sley, and Jennifer Ashe of As The World Turns visited CRLS this fall, hundreds of soap opera fans went crazy. The female majority greeted the stars with piercing screams and thun- derous applause. Security was heavy, but didn’t dare interfere when one student gave an envi- able strangling hug to the male actors. Female Football Player When Fanshen Cox decided to join the CRLS Warriors football team, she had little idea what reactions she would trigger. Although she is not the first young woman to play in a high school football team, her membership attracted the attention of various media. Fanshen played wide-receiver and proved herself both on the field and standing up to social prejudices. | THE ARTS LISA PORTER A PLACE TO CREATE REALS T LM RE AP RET ILI IE NEL TE JENNIFER BRISSETE HEATHER LEWIS HEATHER LEWIS N oa = CELIA CONNAIRE DAN OWUJU 113 Photography Sean Harris 114 : Paul Wooddruff i : hb as = | | HENR SELECUOS Diana Medeiros me ce a Jimmy Kim 115 116 “Uh gee uh — I’m a twee We must, we must... “ . _ wo yyy “Beckstah — You don’t have to wear your dance face tonight” The Karate Kid The Drama Department shares the basement of the Arts Building with the CRLS Dance program. It is run by Barbara Ehrlich and has been very active in recent years. The dancers put on an annual concert which displays their talents and diversity. Daily classes are offered throughout the year which provides both the beginning and advanced students with opportunities to expand their dancing abilities. Lion face — Lemon face! 117 MUSIC The Music Department at C.R.L.S. has been a very important part of the school. Every year they enrich our lives with concerts with various types of music ranging from jazz to classical. In May of 1986, the Jazz Ensemble performed for the Governor's Ball in Lowell. Traditionally, the Band has played in the annual foot- ball games, including in the Thanksgiving game. (where the whole band usually freezes!) In the concerts and football games, the band, orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble has made us tap our feet and dance to songs like “Axel F’, “Obsession”, “Tiguila’, “Proud Mary”, “Exodus”, and “Woodchoppers Ball”. The chorus is also a big part of the Music Department. They have been to nursing homes, hospitals, and parades. The chorus has sung a selection of songs like “New York, New York’, “We Are The World”, and “Summer Time”. The Music Department has brought extraordinary talent to C.R.L.S. We want to thank Bob Ponte, Jimmy Smith, Mary Dwyer,Jean Tepaski, and Anthony Apicella for helping us develop these great talents. DRAMA Bravo Cappuccio! Giannina (Melissa Marotto) looks apprehensive as the Matthew Damon playing Humpty Dumpty (A.K.A. sorceress (Betsy Flack) attempts to cure her loss of Toast) speech. The CRLS Drama production of “Bravo Cappuccio” placed fourth in the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival. The cast, in conjunction with Director Gerry Speca, wrote the script, basing it on a few Italian folk tales. The show was very exciting and involved such things as a magic pasta pot, rotating set pieces powered by crew people, and a variety of plot twists. Geppone (Derrick Bridgeman) is entranced by a magic box given to him by the North Wind. The North Wind (Amo Gulinello) and his wife (Jenny Raskin) present Geppone with a magic box. 120 Strega Nonna (Margarrite Mancini) places a spell on her magic pasta pot as Bi Anthony (Amo Gulinello) looks on in wonder. ay ‘A 7 Ihe Visit © ISI This year, the fall show at CRLS was —— directed by Al Cremin, a guest director from oe Watertown High School. He directed the award winning show at the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival last year. Mr. Cremin brought his version of The Visit to the CRLS theater. The show was about Ciara Wascher, a millionaire who returns to seek revenge on her hometown. She asks the townspeople to kill the one man she used to love. Her antics in the town stir up a bit of hid- den scandal. The show was a big hit and it was a great experience for students from CRLS to be able to work with an outside director. DOON The whole cast toasts the upcoming marriage festivities of Charlie Dalrymple (Greg Edwards) and Jean McClaren (Jessica Rizzi). Tommy Allbright (Jesse Flack) and Jeff Douglas (Bren- dan Case) contemplate their whereabouts before they stumble upon Brigadoon. The Drama Department’s annual summer musical, Brigadoon, filled the theatre with colorful costumes, talented actors, and beautiful sets. After six weeks of blocking, designing, sewing, and painting, the show was ready for a final polish and took on an incredible realism as soon as lighting, fog, and sound effects were added. On opening night, the actors glided through the audience and on the Stage to begin the play with MacConnachy Square — there the story begins to unfold involving the audience in a magical tale of an enchanted hillside village. Every time we come down with a bug or get hurt in gym, we go up to the fourth floor and get the care we need to feel better. Without them, life at C.R.L.S. may not exist because all of our pain, pangs, breaks, aches, and fevers would go uncared for. The computer staff at C.R.L.S. is responsible for the scheduling of students in classes for each academic year. These three institutions, which surround the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, hop with activity during the high school’s lunch hour. According to the clerk at the Montrose Market, visitors are guaranteed plenty of student activity at these spots. “The students arent allowed to go more than a block away during lunch hour;so they have fo go to these three places.” he explains. “Sage’s won't let them in; and neither will the Broadway Super Market, so they don't have much choice:” The most popular student activities during. lunch hour include buying a Coke and a slice of pizza, snacking’on a bag of Doritos, or simply relaxing with a Mountain Dew. A word to the wise: the crowd at the Montrose gets so heavy during lunch hour that the store'has a doorman who only. leis a few students in at a time, a la Studio 54.
