PNA ead a ON We i ao A ee Satter 7s. os. ae In your four years at CRLS, miles of corridors have been travelled and scores of bridges have been crossed — from science labs in the Rindge building Toms pyre TaLom Cclosmey am latcercieles(cleccla cr-Vals (AU me) mn latcmyavals building, from the stability of life as a child to the uncertainty of existence as a young adult, from learning facts and figures to challenging known philosophies. Physical, mental, and spiritual changes have been marked by the passing of tests, courses, trials, and time. The dreams and ideals that you have developed during this time are a foundation for the future. If what we have given of ourselves has aided you in your search for personal and universal excellence, we want you to know that you also have enriched our lives. Best wishes to the Class of 1986 The Staff of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School KALEIDOSCOPE Because we, the Class of 1986, are a class of initiators, we think not about how to keep things the same, but how to bring about change for the better. So we, in the tradition of excellence, decided that it was time to give a name to our yearbook, a name which would encompass the unique spirit of our high school. A kaleidoscope, through a scattering of colored glass, transforms the energy of light into many beautiful symmetrical patterns. So it is that the energy of the staff and the students at CRLS have transformed the dissonance of contrasting programs, interests, cultures, and races into ever-changing but consistently harmonious configurations. We present to you then, the first CRLS Kaleidoscope, a representation of our school, and the Class of 1986. 0 9 r: 2 4 oA eS « a “ 4 Q © Pa KODAK SAFETY FILM 5065 KODAK SAFETY FILM S665 There are over sixty different nationalities represented at CRLS. This diversity has been an asset rather than a disadvantage. We have come from different schools, racial backgrounds, and cultures to form a unique academic community. Not only do we come to school to learn a variety of skills, but more importantly, we come together to learn from each other. Together we make a completed puzzle; each part needing each other, and each part equally as important as the others. Coming together at CRLS is an experience that we will never forget. SO: COMING TOGETHER Newcomers and visitors to CRLS are often baffled by the sheer size of the student body. Often there seem to be more students than there actually are, because social life at CRLS is carried on everywhere: in corridors, cafeterias, at lockers, in stairwells and, for Juniors and Seniors, in the famous SSC. In this respect, CRLS is like any other highschool; the multiplicity of racial backgrounds may be distinctive, but the existence of cliques and gossip networks, the in-school dating scene and the combination of off-the-wall personalities make this school identical to high schools around the world. Now more than ever there is freedom in fashion. While ten and twenty years ago, there was one style that had to be followed by all of the ‘‘in” people, now, anything goes. Shoes range from traditional penny loafers and flats to combat boots. Boys can pierce and double pierce their ears, wear hot pink and Day-Glo blue. For girls, the mini skirt has come back to stay and pants are not neccessarily worn separately from skirts. Combining the fashion of yesterday with the imagination of tomorrow, the children of the 80’s have truly created a style of their own. a | [ae ar 8 eo 6 unbeidgyt Roackodt 11 Course options at CRLS allow students to add something from their particular interest to an otherwise complete schedule. Participation in optional programs and classes, whether they be for business or the Arts, helps students find out how interested they are in the corresponding careers and gives them the experience needed for a head start. For those students who don’t plan to take what they have learned into the job market, these courses simply provide the opportunity to broaden their horizons, and have a little fun. and ACADEMIC LIFE ith all of the talk- ing in hallways, going to games or dances, the fund- raisers, extra-curricular and special activities, sometimes the _ real purpose for being at CRLS becomes difficult to discern. The largest portion of our time has actually been spent in academic studies. Wheth- er we were learning to solve a matrix or prepare a gourmet meal, what we have been taught here will be the foundation upon which we build our lives. | We have argued con- cepts and we have chal- lenged ideas, to come, finally, to a new and unique realization of our- selves and the world. We have worked hard, ex- perienced much anxiety and lived through our fears of failure, to achieve our personal best. May I extend the congratulations and best wishes of the Cambridge School Department to the Class of 1986. Your achievement at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School during your four years of study has demonstrated concern for excellence in education and the need to meet personal as well as community oals. s Graduation from high school, a memorable and honorable milestone, does not end your quest for excellence. While you have met the prerequesites for a high school diploma, you must now seek to perfect your skills as you advance through a career and or college. The goal of excellence at work, in academics, and family relationships must be reached and reset in continuing cycles to establish a course allowing you to excell throughout your lives. Good luck in the future. Dr. Robert Peterkin Superintendent of Schools 16 On cademic xcellence t : | The Cambridge Rindge and Latin School has a proud tradition of academic excellence. The class of 1986 is no exception. Your classmates have had the unique distinction of participating in two International Academic Decathlons, received 26 awards in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Examination, received numerous awards in Drama, Art, Music, and will gain admission to the most prestigious universities in the country. As you look back on your high school years, the recurring theme, I hope, will be that of academic excellence. Excellence should be defined not only in terms of academic achievement, but also in the full realization of your academic potential. The quest for academic excellence has been fostered and nurtured by your high school experience. By stressing the importance of academic excellence your teachers hoped to instill in you a desire to excel, as well as, to provide you with those skil which are needed to meet the challenges of tomorrow. . It is our hope that upon graduating, you will continue to develop and pursue the never ending search for academic | excellence in a manner that best suits you. Last but not least, our Yearbook editor, Susan Bascomb. This yearbook would not be what it is and without exaggeration may not have been completed if it were not for the many days and evenings of hard, tedious work. Her committment to this task is a tribute to her school spirit and a reflection of her personal integrity. The 1986 Yearbook advisors, Joseph X. Sullivan and Al Ferreira, were consistently hard working and readily available for advice, assistance, and encouragement. This year the need was greater than usual; many regular donors withdrew their support because of the raging epidemic of fear about the AIDS disease. However, with the help of Mr. McGillicudy, a Science teacher at CRLS who organizes the Blood Drive each year, the Red Cross staff was able to dispel enough of that fear to make the Blood Drive worthwhile. The plot centers around Lysistrata, the determined Athenian, who organizes and unites women of the warring city-states of Greece to wage a strike against their bellicose men until all arms are laid aside. The CRLS production of Lysistrata was presented in December of 1985. The cast was composed of a large number of talented CRLS students. The multi-leveled set designed by Richard J. Geffen. Produced by Gerry Speca, Lysistrata is a comedy that highlights the similarities between Ancient Greece and the Modern World. 128 Yung-Tang Chan Kaarina Lee Robe ART 130 Celia Connaire Daniel Owusu Lisa Viksnins 131 rcia Victor Ga Laura Christie Kevin Smith D we ms ap QO. x re G © f= S Le QO. © Z. nm Y) oe Kevin Keegan Christopher O’Bryant Jessie Mekie Susan Bascomb 133 134 ONG an ox fh ‘6 Ds 4] x Ks Up nh Cae QR yy) AGL Ys Ss Zi WEEN. PROGRAMS PROGRAMS PROGRAMS the following twelve pages we have highlighted ten of the only regret is not having the space to cover every program offered ae Ose bas) PROGRAMS PROGRAMS PROGRAMS PROGRAMS PROGRAMS PROGRAMS CBLP The Community Based Learning Program provides students with the opportunity to select a community based internship experience, participate in classes held in the community, or to enroll in an academic college level course. Students who select internships gain first-hand experience in their chosen field, investigate different types of career, or use the community to enhance their academic skills. Students may also apply to take a college level course at a local college or university. Upon special application, some of the courses may carry curriculum credit toward graduation requirements. Under the supervision of Bob Richards and Linore Sizemore, the Community Based Learning Program allows students to broaden their academic horizons in their community. 203 WN 3 Stephen Allen (DJ Freeze) Lori Madison (China Tea), and Suzette Alvarado (Suzy-Q) Radio Broadcast Journalism is a ten credit English course offered at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. It is a full-year course in which students are guaranteed to learn about all aspects of radio, from writing and reading news to engineering a live program. The Radio Staton, WRLS, is chiefly responsible for some of the hottest school activities ever. For example, WRLS brought you lip-snych’85 las t yea which was an awesome success. WRLS will be repeating this contest this year when we bring you the “Copy Cats”’ Lip-Synch ’86 this March. ut that is just a sampling of what WRLS has to offer. Aside from all the fun we have here at the station, the course is excellent “hands-on” training for a career in Radio Broadcasting. Many students who take the course are successful in obtaining internships at local radio stations, Other WRLS alumni go on to major in communications and to work in college radio. ENTERPRISE CO-OP Enterprise Co-op is an alternative career-oriented program for dropouts and potential dropouts. The program is unique in that it involves student-run businesses. A woodshop and extensive food services are operated in an atmosphere that stimulates the real business world. Students receive share in the co-op based on their productivity and their dividend checks reflect the increase or decrease in profits for a particular pay period. The academic curriculum relates directly to the students’ experiences in the businesses. In addition to a standard curriculum of English, Math and Social Studies, students also participate in and receive credit for their contributions to decision-making meetings at which policies and problems are addressed. The emphasis in all aspects of the program is on increasing the student’s self-confidence and personal growth and development. It is anticipated that, after one year of participation in Enterprise Co-op, a student will be prepared either to re-enter the mainstream high school program, or to secure entry-level employment in a career of his her own choosing. 205 206 Alex Delvalle ADOLESCENT PARENTING LaWanda Perry How to oe SAS Rita Alesi, Teresa Caldwell, Ferreira ze “sm, 2 Nina Walcott, Sally 4 } Chaves, and Grace HOME ECONOMICS eee ees, CHILD DEVELOPMENT 207 208 CULINARY ARTS Jeff Callahan practices his Garde Manager work. A lot of visitors report that when they go to Cambridge they just like to hang around “where the students are” to get a feel for the excitement of youth, when everything is possible. If you want to get a sense of this We’ve Got What You Need Everyday dynamic scene yourself, we suggest a visit to the following hangouts. xxMontrose Market Mass. House of Pizza Angelo’s Pizza. These three institutions, which surround the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, hop with activity during the high school’s lunch hour. According to the clerk at the Montrose Market, visitors are guaranteed plenty of student activity at these spots. “The students aren’t allowed to go more than a block away during lunch hour, so they have to go to these three places.” he explains. “Sage’s won't let them in, and neither will the Broadway Super Market, so they don’t have much choice.” The most popular student activities during lunch hour include buying a Coke and a slice of pizza, snacking on a bag of Doritos, or simply relaxing with a Mountain Dew. A word to the wise: the crowd at the Montrose gets so heavy during lunch hour that the store has a doorman who only lets a few students in at a time, a la Studio 54. So look sharp if you want to squeeze into this student hot spot. Our rating system: xxExcellent — don’t miss it! «Good — worth a detour x Interesting — passable if visiting means waiting for the “walk” signal.
