Career Resource Center We Dedicate Our Book Because ... You encouraged those who were reaching for more and added hope in the minds of those who were in despair. You showed us with all the current resources and career information that there is life after High School. You prepared us to take our first step into that life ... , aN important step into the real world of adulthood, a world where we make decisions and become accountable for their outcome. You are teachers, counselors and professionals wno were never foo busy fo answer questions, and more importantly, never too professional to relate to students on a comfortable, personal level. Ms. Ginny McCabe Career Counselor A former English teacher at St. Mary’s High in Cambridge, Ms. McCabe came to C.R.LS. in September of 1971. As a permanent substitute in the English Department for her first year, Ms. McCabe “weathered” some of the most challenging classes in the history of her career. She comments, “It was during this time that | leamed what education was — an honest exchange between teacher and student — a true realization that these roles interchange.” A member of the English Department for five years, Ms. McCabe taught many Senior classes. During this time she recognized the need to provide more direct services to students. Moving on to the Career Center, Ms. McCabe changed both the “name” of the Center and the focus of career planning at our high school. Her contributions to C.R.L.S. and the Cambridge community include being a former C.T.A. Representative and Faculty Club Executive Board Member, launching the RCA Minority Exploratory Engineering Program being a Summer Coordinator for the E.M.H.R.D.A. Youth Employment Program, and serving on the Harshbarger Education Task Force. A graduate of Emmanuel College, Ms. McCabe received her Masters’ from Boston State and Masters’ Plus credits from Boston College. Recently, she completed a long-term goal by receiving her Real Estate Salesperson’s license. In her “spare” time Ms, McCabe is politically active and has been A Campaign Manager, organizing neighborhood groups to effect change in education. “The love and example of my tamily has been the foundation of my commitment to youth. | have touched many students’ lives at C.R.LS. and they in turn have touched mine — all of us better people for having met.” 4 Ms. Kathleen N. Walcott Career Counselor A graduate of Cambridge High and Latin School, Ms. Walcott returned in 1970 as an English teacher. Four years later, she received her Masters’ degree in Counselling and joined the Guidance Department as a Counselor. She was appointed to the Career Resource Center in 1981. 1984 will be her fourteenth year in the Cambridge School System. Her diverse involvement with staff, students and community has included: Executive Board Member of the CTA, MTA Student Committee; MTA and NEA Delegate; former advisor of the Black Student Union for a ten year period; present coordinator of MASSPEP, a program which introduces youth to careers in engineering and science; workshop moderator for the Cambridge BiCentennial Commission; Vice President of the Cambridge Black Cultural and Historical Association; and, oral history presentor for Boston College’s “Blacks in Boston”. Ms. Walcott received her B.S. from Northeasterm University and Ed.M. from Suffolk University. Her spare time is soent antique hunting, refinishing furniture, caning chairs, and pursuing a doctorate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. “All | am, | owe to my family, especially my mother and father.” Ms. Carole Gentile Secretary Career Resource Center Ms. Gentile has been secretary at the Career Resource Center for five years. Individual students have discovered the “specialness” of the Center through their Own personal contacts. The Class of 1984 is proud and grateful for the hands and hearts that have always been there to guide us on the road toward the future. With appreciation and gratitude for a staff so devoted and caring, hard-working and encouraging, the Class of 1984 proudly dedicates this Year Book. Ms. Audrey E. O’Neil Business Teacher and Job Placement Ms. O'Neil taught business subjects at Cambridge High and Latin Schoo! until it was consolidated with Rindge. Since September 1975, she has taught two or three business courses and worked in the Career Resource Center seeking full-time and part-time jobs for our graduate and undergraduate students. She finds it a pleasure working with her three colleagues; Carol Gentile, Ginny McCabe, and Kathleen Walcott. Before the Career Resource Center became what it is today, it was nothing more than a little closet. It was located on the top floor of the Latin building, quietly tucked away, It was started nine years ago by Cambridge volunteers as a small reference library for college bound students. It was then called the College Information Center. When a position opening became available for a permanent organizer, Ms. Ginny McCabe applied for the job and got it. She felt that there was a real need to also serve the non-college bound students as well. With this, they changed the name of the Center to the Career Resource Center. The major goal of the Career Resource Center was to assist students in making good decisions about academics, career directions, and personal lifestyles. The Center’s growth required a more spacious location, and in 1980 it was moved to its present location. In its new location, the center provides a wider range of information. It provides individual and group counseling, sponsors the College Fair and Career Speakers, directs student orientation at the Center, and provides computer training. The Center helps develop job shadowings for Juniors and Seniors, and offers vocational testing. Ms. McCabe says that there are several things that make the Center unique: “We have tried very hard to provide an atmosphere for students that is open, warm, supportive, and conscious of students’ needs. The Center is a special place where students feel welcome and where the staff cares about young people.” Ms. Walcott, the Career Counselor, goes on fo say, “| love working with people, especially the young. That is the time they need the most help in their lives. Even though sometimes | feel discouraged and disillusioned, | never lose faith in them.” The major events of the year include the College Fair, Financial Aid Information Night for students and parents, the Success Information Network, and a Career Forum. The Center serves roughly a hundred students a day, and double this number on days when the Center sponsors a Career Seminar Day. Counselors and teachers from other school systems often visit the Career Resource Center to seek assistance in terms of developing centers of their own, Or to monitor its programs and operation. Both Ms. McCabe and Ms. Walcott have acted as consultants to both school and community organizations. It is interesting to note that many students outside of Cambridge Rindge and Latin Schoo! have been referred to the Center for personal and career counseling. Many of the Human Service Agencies within the city use the Center as a resource for their clients. The student volunteers add a special dimension to the Career Resource Center. Their time, energy, and efforts are truly appreciated by the staff, and in turn students receive training and a more in-depth knowledge of the career world.
