Career Resource Center We Dedicate Our Book Because ... You encouraged those who were reaching for more and added hope in the minds of those who were in despair. You showed us with all the current resources and career information that there is life after High School. You prepared us to take our first step into that life ... , aN important step into the real world of adulthood, a world where we make decisions and become accountable for their outcome. You are teachers, counselors and professionals wno were never foo busy fo answer questions, and more importantly, never too professional to relate to students on a comfortable, personal level. Ms. Ginny McCabe Career Counselor A former English teacher at St. Mary’s High in Cambridge, Ms. McCabe came to C.R.LS. in September of 1971. As a permanent substitute in the English Department for her first year, Ms. McCabe “weathered” some of the most challenging classes in the history of her career. She comments, “It was during this time that | leamed what education was — an honest exchange between teacher and student — a true realization that these roles interchange.” A member of the English Department for five years, Ms. McCabe taught many Senior classes. During this time she recognized the need to provide more direct services to students. Moving on to the Career Center, Ms. McCabe changed both the “name” of the Center and the focus of career planning at our high school. Her contributions to C.R.L.S. and the Cambridge community include being a former C.T.A. Representative and Faculty Club Executive Board Member, launching the RCA Minority Exploratory Engineering Program being a Summer Coordinator for the E.M.H.R.D.A. Youth Employment Program, and serving on the Harshbarger Education Task Force. A graduate of Emmanuel College, Ms. McCabe received her Masters’ from Boston State and Masters’ Plus credits from Boston College. Recently, she completed a long-term goal by receiving her Real Estate Salesperson’s license. In her “spare” time Ms, McCabe is politically active and has been A Campaign Manager, organizing neighborhood groups to effect change in education. “The love and example of my tamily has been the foundation of my commitment to youth. | have touched many students’ lives at C.R.LS. and they in turn have touched mine — all of us better people for having met.” 4 Ms. Kathleen N. Walcott Career Counselor A graduate of Cambridge High and Latin School, Ms. Walcott returned in 1970 as an English teacher. Four years later, she received her Masters’ degree in Counselling and joined the Guidance Department as a Counselor. She was appointed to the Career Resource Center in 1981. 1984 will be her fourteenth year in the Cambridge School System. She also worked for the government for the Internal Revenue Service and the Labor Statistics Department. Her diverse involvement with staff, students and community has included: Executive Board Member of the CTA, MTA Student Committee; MTA and NEA Delegate; former advisor of the Black Student Union for a ten year period; present coordinator of MASSPEP, a program which introduces youth to careers in engineering and science; workshop moderator for the Cambridge BiCentennial Commission; Vice President of the Cambridge Black Cultural and Historical Association; and, oral history presentor for Boston College’s “Blacks in Boston”. Ms. Walcott received her B.S. from Northeasterm University and Ed.M. from Suffolk University. Her spare time is soent antique hunting, refinishing furniture, caning chairs, and pursuing a doctorate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. “All | am, | owe to my family, especially my mother and father.” Ms. Carole Gentile Secretary Career Resource Center Ms. Gentile has been secretary at the Career Resource Center for five years. Prior to this position she was secretary in the Home Economics Department and the Achievement School. She is a graduate of this High School and is very glad fo be a part of the Center. In addition to this, Ms. Gentile is the Local 195 Union Steward at the High School, a position hdl involves a great deal of time after school OUTS. Her husband, John, is a graduate of the Rindge Technical Hon School. Her son John Jackie) is a graduate of C.R.L.S., and daughter ebra (Debbie) is still attending C.R.L.S. Individual students have discovered the “specialness” of the Center through their Own personal contacts. The Class of 1984 is proud and grateful for the hands and hearts that have always been there to guide us on the road toward the future. With appreciation and gratitude for a staff so devoted and caring, hard-working and encouraging, the Class of 1984 proudly dedicates this Year Book. Ms. Audrey E. O’Neil Business Teacher and Job Placement Ms. O'Neil taught business subjects at Cambridge High and Latin Schoo! until it was consolidated with Rindge. Since September 1975, she has taught two or three business courses and worked in the Career Resource Center seeking full-time and part-time jobs for our graduate and undergraduate students. She finds it a pleasure working with her three colleagues; Carol Gentile, Ginny McCabe, and Kathleen Walcott. Before the Career Resource Center became what it is today, it was nothing more than a little closet. It was located on the top floor of the Latin building, quietly tucked away, It was started nine years ago by Cambridge volunteers as a small reference library for college bound students. It was then called the College Information Center. When a position opening became available for a permanent organizer, Ms. Ginny McCabe applied for the job and got it. She felt that there was a real need to also serve the non-college bound students as well. With this, they changed the name of the Center to the Career Resource Center. The major goal of the Career Resource Center was to assist students in making good decisions about academics, career directions, and personal lifestyles. The Center’s growth required a more spacious location, and in 1980 it was moved to its present location. In its new location, the center provides a wider range of information. It provides individual and group counseling, sponsors the College Fair and Career Speakers, directs student orientation at the Center, and provides computer training. The Center helps develop job shadowings for Juniors and Seniors, and offers vocational testing. Ms. McCabe says that there are several things that make the Center unique: “We have tried very hard to provide an atmosphere for students that is open, warm, supportive, and conscious of students’ needs. The Center is a special place where students feel welcome and where the staff cares about young people.” Ms. Walcott, the Career Counselor, goes on fo say, “| love working with people, especially the young. That is the time they need the most help in their lives. Even though sometimes | feel discouraged and disillusioned, | never lose faith in them.” The major events of the year include the College Fair, Financial Aid Information Night for students and parents, the Success Information Network, and a Career Forum. The Center serves roughly a hundred students a day, and double this number on days when the Center sponsors a Career Seminar Day. Counselors and teachers from other school systems often visit the Career Resource Center to seek assistance in terms of developing centers of their own, Or to monitor its programs and operation. Both Ms. McCabe and Ms. Walcott have acted as consultants to both school and community organizations. It is interesting to note that many students outside of Cambridge Rindge and Latin Schoo! have been referred to the Center for personal and career counseling. Many of the Human Service Agencies within the city use the Center as a resource for their clients. The student volunteers add a special dimension to the Career Resource Center. Their time, energy, and efforts are truly appreciated by the staff, and in turn students receive training and a more in-depth knowledge of the career world. Is he for real? We can all look back on our childhood and remember working on a puzzle and how the puzzle offered many things. Life here at C.RR.L.S. has in many ways been like a jigsaw puzzle with the exception, that unlike the jigsaw puzzle of our childhood, this puzzle has no completed picture on the cover. When we entered C.R.L.S. four years ago, we had no clear picture of what our four years here would finally bring to us. We have developed this year’s yearbook theme around this concept. As we moved from our Freshman to our Senior year, the unique shapes and sizes of our individual puzzles began to fall into place. The miscellany of things that have made up our four years are our friends and acquaintances, participation in school sports, and other school activities. Now, as we approach graduation, we can begin to see the completed picture. As we go forward in our lives, there will be other puzzles as well, but our years here at C.R.LS. will help us to complete the many different puzzles that life will present to us. ls this edible? Black leather dog chains, spiked belts and bracelets, fluores- cent hair, and ripped shirts were the garb of the day. Both students and teachers got into the act. The shock of seeing faculty members sporting pink fluorescent hair set yet another “first” in our trend-setting school. Everyone had a great time and | wouldn’t be the least surprised if “Punk Day” became a tradition at C.R.LS. CANBRIDGE RINDGE AND LATIN AFTER HOURS One of the K.B. clubs most profitable fund raisers of the year was the Valentine Day dance that they sponsored. The club really pulled together to make this event a big success. The Valentine night atmosphere was filled with happiness, friendship, and balloons. The K.B. club is also proud of the fact that all money collected went to benefit the community. Special thanks goes to Ms. Chiurri, K.B.’s advisor. Representatives from colleges throughout the United States are invited to take part in this event. The College Fair provides members of the senior class with an opportunity to meet various college representatives and explore the programs available to graduating seniors. This year was no exception to previous years in the support and attendance at this event. The school cafeterias were filled to capacity with students, parents, and faculty members eager to explore the long process of the career formulation. s so confusing. ‘ It j here? s going w He’ 25 HOMECOMING DANCE é Milton Shull, Lisa Covalucci, Andy Ayres Jessica Funke, Franco Rotondo y Hi Ma — | Won!!! 26 Homecoming King and Queen Take the Floor 0 _ = bes “ Milas Homecoming King and Queen: Todd Warfield and Lisa Covalucci 27 ALPINE SKI CLUB 28 Executive board members try out new dandruff shampoo. . a al eee “Do | love skiing with CRLS? “My Mittens will tell you” “Finally, I’m standing up!” i . ae “ns : tte ‘chs a “Ready for Hotdogging?” I'M a mogul jumper. It was a disappointment that they did not qualify for the State Championship. The team worked hard and looks forward to the challenge of next year. To quote one of the team captains, “We have a good ball club, we have a young ball club, we have Qa good, young, ball club.” Team members Lisa Covalucci, Liz Raposa, and Dawn Marie Jones led the team throughout the season, and helped bolster team spirits on those occasions when victory did not come their way. Looking back upon the 1983 football season one could think of it as a failure. One could believe that the C.R.L.S. Warriors had a lack of talent, failing to realize that the football squad faces one of the toughest schedules in the state; and by confronting such powerhouses and superbowl! contenders, they left behind an excessive amount of injuries, thereby forcing the younger and less experienced players to take the place of their fallen colleagues. lf one were to look at the statistics, one Could be deceived. The numbers and points do not measure the efforts, desire or determination of the athletes. Even “F. though consciously aware of their upsetting record, the team continually showed up for practice to prove their dedication and desire to win. They pulled together, working as one single unit, and ultimately became a truely cohesive team. The 1983 season has closed, leaving the coaches, faculty, students and fans with a positive thought; that the 1984 team, with the more experienced athletes, will don the uniform and shoot for the dream of finally being a Superbowl contender. 113 Mother may |? A Great Outlook The Girl’s Soccer team had an excellent record this year, considering that on the average eight of the starting players were Freshmen. The entire team was comprised of twenty Freshmen playing against Juniors and Seniors from other schools. The team got it’s early training in the Cambridge Youth Soccer League and most of the girls came from the same championship team. “Shake, Rattle, Roll” Maria lvarez, a junior and the fastest high-skilled playmaker, and Freshman Beth Torez, the most aggressive goal scorer, were voted as two All Stars by the Suburban Coaches. The team had four wins and six losses, the best record the girl’s team has had and that record keeps on improving every year. “With another year of experience and physical growth,” says Coach John Silva, “the team will be able to play anyone in New England.” 115 BOYS SOCCER This year’s soccer team proved to be very talented. The season was a tremendous success, A tough example was set by last year’s team which had qualified for the Eastern Mass. finals. If this year’s team hoped to attain last year’s success, then the team and Coach Inglis knew they would have their work cut out for them in order to win another suburban League Championship. This year’s team needed to recruit a new defense squad, which was formed by the addition of Jack Da Rosa, John Ramos, Daniel Larrent, Mario Pimental, Sil Foutes, an All Star goal keeper, and the sweeper, Luis Amaral. At midfield, the team’s strongest players were Ricardo Tastreba, Manny Botelho, Jonn Chery, and Harold Henmo, an exchange student from Norway. For the offense squad, Coach Inglis relied upon All-Star Alvaro Ilbanez, Numesio Braz, Kevin Mescoll, Frantz Prenelus, Evans Prenelus and Mike Kiflit. The team closed the season with a record of 11-1-4 which included nine shut out games. Following the team introductions, everyone’s attention focused on the football team and the cheerleaders. The girls gave a tremendous performance of both old and new cheers. Their outstanding human pyramid is always a favorite. Coach George Greenidge introduced the team to a very excited crowd, who urged the team on to victory in their Thanksgiving Day game against Don Bosco. The Rally closed with a display of Break Dancing by a group of very agile students who were accompanied by the C.R.L.S. band. | } TURKEY The 1983 Turkey Day Game was an exciting event for all who attended. Despite the Warrior's tremendous effort to break their losing record, the strength of the Don Bosco team was overwhelming, and the Warriors were defeated. Although C.R.L.S. was not victorious, it seems certain that the seniors on the team will have many happy | memories of their days on the football team. 144 GAME One of the highlights of the day was the C.R.L.S. band’s performance at half-time. Paired with the enthusiasm of the cheerleaders, the band’s playing captured the mood of the crowd and the team, leaving everyone in good spirits. tc 4% ie Sele OOM AAAS ABABA AWB MPEP vinioppnisoatttaiaa 145 146 U.M.P.A. Project Adventure is a nationally accepted public school version of the Outward Bound Program. UMPA is Cambridge's Uroan Modification of Project Adventure. The High School activities included in UMPA are new games, group initiative problems and a ropes course. The program also offers an extensive variety of introductory and advanced opportunities. UMPA has been used as a demonstation project for teachers in other cities interested in developing similar alternative programs in Physical Education. Some members of the Class of 1984 saw this program at its inception during the spring of their sophomore year. The arrival of the course was marked by the construction of an extensive ropes course in the newly built field house. The Outdoor Education Courses have involved trips to the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont where the CRLS students worked with students from Lyndon State College in activities such as rock climbing, backpacking, orienteering, skiing, biking, and canoeing. In its pioneering of UMPA here at CRLS, the Class of 1984 has helped to launch a program that we hope will be enjoyed by the students at CRLS for many years to come. 147 [so 148 CANBRIDGE RINDGE AND LATIN 1 PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTS 150 CANTABRIDGIA RESTAURANT The Cantabrigia Restaurant is a chance for students, staff, and the general public to treat themselves to a multisensual experience of ethnic and gourmet foods. Now in its fourth year and the showplace for Occupational Education’s Culinary Arts Dept., the restaurant is open for lunch 3 days per week. On those days, approximately 75 people taste and smell the hard work of the programs’ aspiring chefs. Under the direction of Chef Bill Calore and his capable technical assistants, Elizabeth Kjolseth, John Greco, Yvonne Cherish, and Ann Petrillo, students create all the food “from scratch” using tested recipes. In the first half of the year lunch is served buffet style, and the second half of the year students wait on tables so that they can leam both ends of the business. The restaurant features both continental and domestic cooking and tries to serve at least one vegetarian dish. The restaurant’s business has grown annually. Although the restaurant is not able to accomodate large numbers of people, it is elegant down to the fresh flowers on the tables and has a pleasant ambiance. It is a bit early to know if any of the students will become great chefs, or go on to build a chain of posh restaurants ... There is always that possibility, given the experience gained in the program. C.B.L.P. The Community Based Learning Program originated out of a federally soonsored program, Community Interaction Through Youth (CITY), in 1971. CITY was developed jointly by Brookline and Cambridge Public schools. The goal was to create a “high school without walls” similar to programs in Chicago and Philadelphia. When federal funds ran out, each system continued to run their own program independently. Cambridge changed the program name to Community Based Learming Program (CBLP). CBLP is a community centered program of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Similar to flexible campus programs in other secondary schools, CBLP is the umbrella for a host of off-campus, unpaid learning experiences for CRLS students. Our major focus rests with career internships, college courses, and cooperative arrangements with educational and business organizations. We develop programs in response both to students expressed needs and community input. CBLP is open to all students in the high school regardless of house or grade level. Currently, there are three staff members in CBLP. They are Adrienne Durst, Bob Richards, and Linore Sizemore. The CBLP office is located in the Arts Building on the first floor, in room A107. | Bob Richards Adrienne Durst AW NE Ser QO SAE SNE Linore Sizemore 151 . ie PRE-VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM 152 The Pre-Vocational Training Program is located in R.136 at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. It is a self contained classroom for students with special needs. The students in the pre-vocational program represent a wide range of abilities needs and interests. These students actively participate in many classes including Home Economics, Music, Gym, Art and other courses of individual choice. In addition to recreation and work study, the students in Pre-Voc also participate in special activities within the high school. The students are seen throughout C.R.L.S. in various work study positions. Upon graduation, some students will either continue their education or enter the job market. This years graduating class will include: John Carrasquillo, Nilda Espata, Edjar Maciel, Sarah Norlton, Kay Young. 153 154 Leroy Walcott Jose Fernandes Anthony Crawford Dante Gandolfo and John Sico Occ. Ricky Maldonado Scott Kneeland © eee Jeffrey Summers and Mrs. Silva WRLS Cambridge Rindge and Latin School has a radio station. WRLS began Phase I, a closed circuit broadcast operation, in May 1983. The initial broadcast and opening of the facility attracted attention from other high schools across the state. Much credit is to given to the members of WRLS pioneering class. During the Phase I! implementation of the station, a “carrier current” transmitter will be installed. This means that we will have an electrical signal in all electrical outlets in the high school complex; we will also broadcast up to a one mile radius of the high school. Once this phase is completed we will occupy frequency 5.5 on the A.M. dial. This phase will be completed during the 1983-84 school year. At this time, C.R.L.S. is one of five high schools in the state which operate radio stations. However, the school is one of two that have integrated radio into the high school curriculum as a course which is taken for credit. “Radio Broadcast Journalism” | and II (E-890 and E-8941) are offered as two half-year English electives. The first semester is a pre-requisite for the second. The two semester courses are structured to provide students with technical, “hands-on” experience using professional broadcast equipment. Students also learn the traditional formats of journalism and journalistic writing. More significantly, students must seriously engage in the business operations of WRLS. Following the successful completion of both semesters of Broadcast Journalism, students receive a “Third Class Operator’s License” from the Federal Communications Commission. The course meets only during the fifth period, and students who are enrolled in the course design their own programs sys variety of musical and journalistic formats. The broadcasts are delivered “live” from the studio which is located in Room 22 addition, teachers and departments can submit programs to WRLS for broadcast. Optimally, WRLS will make education available to wider audience as a result of the variety of programs aired on the station. After, phase Il has been fully implemented, broadcast time will be allocated to the Cambridge community. WRLS would not be a reality today if it were not for the support that | received when I began to explore the feasibility of a radio station at the high school. To Superintendent William Lannon, to Principal Edward Sarasin, to Assistant Principal Diane Tabor, and to the ogiish Department Coordinator, Carolyn Wyatt, | extend my appreciation for allowing me the flexibility and time to develop WRLS. I hope that WRLS will serve as viable instrument that will enhance the educational environment of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, and will further serve as an influence in the Cambridge Community. CARCHIA 1914 - 1984 John Carchia will be long remembered by all at Cambridge Rindge Latin School as a gentle person who always had time to listen. His affiliation to the Cambridge School system was strong, beginning as a student at Cambridge High and Latin where he played a respectable game of football. He took pride in his long tenure as a member of the Rindge Technical School faculty. His patience with his students, his willingness to help others contributed to his success as a teacher. Many of his students who were inspired by him are now entre- preneurs. He was soft spoken yet very determined and enjoyed the challenge of finishing ev- ery project. He was a tireless worker in the Driver Edu- cation Department. He would demon- strate first then expect the student to follow. He demanded the best because he gave his utmost. He seemed to encompass so many of the traits that graduates of Cam- bridge Rindge Latin School need to attain to succeed in life. Their path to success could be modelled from his life’s example. His sudden passing in February 1984 sad- dened all who were privileged to have known him. His presence will be missed. YEARBOOK STAFF Production of the Class of 1984 yearbook began as a pilot project. The production staff signed up for a newly created series of courses which were sponsored in conjunction with the Art Department. They were Graphics Art-Design, and Photography. The production staff began work in the second semester of their Junior year. The program was launched when the entire production staff attended a sales seminar presented by the Hunter Printing Co. at Wellesley College. With the opening of the school year — it was full steam ahead with a very tough deadline schedule to meet in order that the Yearbook would be printed on time, and be available for the class graduation. Considering that the team members took the Graphics Design and Photography course(s) and produced, what we feel is a very creative Yearbook, is a major achievement for them. We received help this year from the Math Department in the form of a Computer Program used to compile the names of Yearbook sponsors and the Yearbook accounts. The program was written by Kathy Rehfield and by a Yearbook staff member. Proofreading services were furnished by Elizabeth Grady of the Social Studies Dept., and thanks to her expertise we saved ourselves many hours of retyping. We owe a special vote of thanks to Phyllis Corbin and Al Ferreira for without their creative talents and dedication we would have been unable to complete our printing schedule. 169 Fundamental House D 1985 Sr. Class Executive Board Occupational Education 170 House B House C SCHOOL GOVERNMENT House A 171 Working with this year’s staff was a pleasure, for they exemplified all that is good about our students here at C.R.L.S. | would particularly like to congratulate the layout team as one group that has performed tirelessly, day after day, week after week. The story revolves around a bloody Feudal land dispute, a story of Grusha the kitchen maid and of her struggle to keep the child she had been caring for CHALK CIRCLE in the belief that the child’s mother was dead. Grusha’s story is paralled by that of Azdak, a drunken town recorder who by a strange twist of fate, was appointed judge. They performed a concert of Chamber Music at the Harvard Epworth Church. They featured groups of between two to fifteen playing different types of music. This was something new this year. The full Orchestra performed at the Spring Concert. They usually featured Seniors in solo performances, but there were no Seniors this year. Student life Cambridge is known for its student life, and there’s no doubt that the whirlwind of activity surrounding the city’s schools keeps the city young. A lot of visitors report that when they go to Cambridge they just like to hang around “where the students are” to get a feel for the excitement of youth, when everything is possible. If you want to get a sense of this dynamic scene yourself, we suggest a visit to the following hangouts. ’ F es. out wos en a oe i. fs Pe xxMontrose Market Mass. House of Pizza Angelo’s Pizza. These three institutions, which surround the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, hop with activity during the high school’s lunch hour. According to the clerk at the Montrose Market, visitors are guaranteed plenty of student activity at these spots. “The students aren‘t allowed to go more than a block away during lunch hour, so they have to go to these three places.” he explains. “Sage’s won't let them in, and neither will the Broadway Super Market, so they don’t have much choice.” Congratulations to the Class of 1984, The most popular student activities during lunch hour include buying a Coke and a slice of pizza, snacking on a bag of Doritos, or simply relaxing with a Mountain Dew. A word to the wise: the crowd at the Montrose gets so heavy during lunch hour that the store has a doorman who only lets a few students in at a time, a la Studio 54. So look sharp if you want to squeeze into this student hot spot. Our rating system: xxxExcellent — don’t miss it! xGood — worth a detour x|Interesting — passable if visiting means waiting for the “walk” signal. 237 238 Congratulations Class of ‘84 TRANSCOMM INC. ‘TRANSPORTATION FOR SPECIAL NEEDS”’ PHONE 445-6600 BELEEHONE 276-7230 HOURS DAILY 7 - 4:30 P.M.
