For the second year in a row, a CRLS junior class chose Riverside Park as the site for the class trip, Friends, classmates and teachers enjoyed a day of enormous fun and excitement. From students drenched from the LOG ride, to others dizzy from the ROLLER COASTER and the LOOP, everyone had an adven- ture to report!! Some people spent money trying to win prizes, stuffed animals and other amusement park type GOODIES. Even the bus ride home revealed to us some unusual sights, but we won't dwell on this unpleasant happening. All in all those students and teachers who had taken part in the outing seemed to enjoy their FINAL FLING as juniors at CRLS!! It proved to be an excellent start on the Sunny Days of Summer !! . 1:-:M . ,. fu ,Q Vx i ,ex Q. LJ an J I , . 1 .. 4 1, , sr--5'-Wt.. What kind of reputation does your athletic program have?? lt went on and on!! From station to station the same questions were asked of the many college representatives present. For a second year, CRLS and many other metropolitan Boston schools, were hosted by Bentley College for this special event. We left school around nine o'clock and arrived at Bentley's spacious campus within thirty min- utes. Even though there were hundreds of col- leges and universities present, each student seemed to go directly to those that they were familiar with or where relativexs had gone and were presently attending. Students left the Fair loaded with BROCHURES, applications, catalogues, and other information that would allow them to make the best possible choice about their college years. This adventure proved to be successful and beneficial to the guidance staff, who renewed acquaintances with the college REPS and renewed their supply of college MATERIALS. All questions were not answered but we were able to start on the long road through Senior YEAR and toward college. 1' -1- 'T' 4 'F? 1 5 rp' 'Q - -Rf:-N ,. -. X il. The course, entitled THE AMERlCAS , is a part of the Social Studies curriculum. It stressed the history, geography, and economics of Latin America. Brian Mooney and Arnie Clayton co-taught this exciting course made up of forty students. Twenty of the students were Americans who spoke and read Spanish and twenty were Hispanic students who spoke and read En- glish. A portion of the course was taught by Mr. Dennis Sullivan of the Berkeley School of Music. On four succes- ive Wednesdays the students were taught the history and musicology of the music they listen to. This musical study dealt with the roots of African and Latin American rhythms. Pictured on these pages is one of those Wednes- day afternoon classes in which students learned to play many of the musical instruments of Latin America. ff- I H -J- 20 1 'H 1' x I, wfzg ,nb , WE CAN START WITH MUSIC!! For many years Ms. Marie McCabe has served the students of the Cam- bridge high schools in various capacities. In each of these she has served well and her success is measured by the friends she has made while serving. Ms. McCabe served as a Modern Language teacher at Cambridge High and Latin School for many years. Her students found her to be interesting and learned from her. Her successes here allowed her to move into the position of Assistant Headmaster. She proved to be a valuable asset to the students, teachers, and other administrators with whom she worked. Since September 1979, Ms. McCabe has served in the CRLS main office performing many duties, including School Registrar. In the capacity of School Registrar, she was, at many times, the first person students and parents who were new to the school met. She always greeted them with a smile and understanding. For this we thank her. Even though many members of the Class of 1981 have had no direct contact with her, her value and service to the students and teachers of Cambridge must be recognized. Therefore, because of the long service given by her to the students of Cambridge, we dedicate the 1981 Yearbook to Ms. Marie McCabe. We wish her the best in the coming years. We will miss the smile, the kind words, and most of all, the gentle understanding. We hope she wills these traits to each of us who remains. A Ms. Phyllis Walcott Ms. Walcott has served the students of Cambridge High and Latin and Cambridge Rindge and Latin for many years. She first served as a provision- al teacherfrom 1961 to 1964. She returned to CHLS in 1969, beingthe first Black to be appointed as a permanent teacher. Ms. Walcott returned to a school which had witnessed racial strife and misunderstanding among its students. Fortunately, into this situation walked a lady equal to the task before her. Not only did she prove to be a positive role model for Cam- bridge students, but also for the young teachers who came to CHLS a year later. She served as an active member of the Science Department and was well respected by her colleagues and students. Ms. Walcott's legacy to the students ofthis school is a curriculum on Black Scientists that will be offered by the Science Department. As Ms. Walcott approaches retirement, she is not as active as she once was. Illness has slowed her walk, but it hasn't dimmed her spirit or deter- mination. Those of us who will be left to complete the task and carry on the work are inspired by the example she set. In recognition of her dedication and inspiration, we proudly dedicate the 1981 Yearbook to Ms, Walcott. Members ofthe staff and student body will miss her but we are glad we knew her. We wish her the best in the years to come. 33 Q65 fa SQ Q9 Q-CJ-6 Q9 YSCQY QT Y fb fa 5 Class Advisor George Clreenidge 'fe' 34 S Class President James Desrosiers I 3 4.1! 4 . 4 .,. , .f ,, ,M ..,,.f,,, Class Secretary Valerie Bowman l l Members of the class meet to discuss plans for the Las Vegas Nite held on january 24, 1981. This brought the record to 3-12-4, and forthis youngteam nextyear should show a great deal of improvement. Although the record was not a winning one, the season was filled with a lot of joy and friendships were made. We can look back on the outstanding play of Lulu Keohane, julie Corey, Liz Hutchinson, Heloise Rodriquez and a host of others and see the dedication the team had. Hopefully, through our play in the spring and over the sum- mer, the 1981 season will be the start ofa winningtradition at CRLS. 127 wk. . w 1 ad Jrfti n... Led by senior captain, Peggy Shinkwin, and new coach Linda Town, the team finished second in the Suburban League. They also qualified for the state tourney and went on to capture the Northern Division title. This feat was accomplished after the courts ruled that the team was eligible to participate despite an attempt by the MIAA to keep the Cambridge teams out of the Fall Sports Tournaments. In the tournament the team defeated strong Westwood and Boston Latin teams to win the title and qualify for the state semi-finals. Unfortunately they did not play up to their usual standards and were knocked out at this level. ln addition to the steady play of Peggy Shinkwin, other members who made notable contributions were fellow senior Karen Dennehv, and super juniors Carol Thomas, Tina Girard, janet and Joan McKenney, Maria Difflemente, and Leslie Quan. 7' ' AP' f 'i7 'l T' A bi' -. dis' 'A 'Sa' v ' - -' . Coming into the season unranked and virtually unrecognized by the local media, they stormed to the second Suburban League title in three campaigns. The key to the comeback was Medina Dixon, one of the best players in the country. In an awesome display of basketball talent, Medina led the league in scoring and was tops in the rebounding category. Even though Medina was awesome, she was well complimented by the talents of seniors Peggy Shinkwin and Sharlene Sturgis, junior Carol Thomas and sophomore Tina West. A welcome addition to this year'steam wasfreshman Delores Williams. We will hearfrom her in the coming years. Other team members making contributions to a winning effort were Karen Dennehy, Maria DiClemente, loan McKinney, Tina Anderson, Debra Estrella and Juanita Matthews. Coach Riggs should be proud ofthese ladies. Although we say farewell to Medina and the other seniors on the team, the winning tradition and sportsmanship will continue into the eighties. 143 'Q' pf! x A X I I lv T l If 2 I hw ..r Q' 'v' H N .M -girl. Led by consensus All-American Pat Ewing, the team completed the regular season undefeated and nationally ranked. The toughest opponents they faced during the regular season were Sub- urban League rival North Quincy and two out-of-state teams, Malverne of Long Island and Wilbur Cross of New Haven, Conn. The victory over Wilbur Cross proved to be most satis- fying. The only defeat suffered over the last three seasons by a CRLS team came at the hands ofthe New Haven team. The rematch took place at B.U.'s Walter Brown Arena before a capacity crowd of 3,000 spectators. The win was a result of a total team effort led by Pat Ewing and Rick larvis. Other highlights of the season included a third Nashua High Christmas Tourney Championship, a third consecu- tive Suburban League title and an unprecedented third straight Division One Championship. The play of seniors Ladon Adair, Byron Lowe, Howard Major and Kevin Head- ley excited the CRLS fans all season. 149 GQX' QQR' Lady Tracksters Run Toward Future Consistent, this is the word that might describe the CRLS girls running efforts. They ran strong during the outdoor Cross Country season, finishing third in the strong Suburban League. They came inside to finish a strong third in the indoor track season. Consistant again was the running of sophomore sensation Thayer Plante. Ms. Plante finished first in the mile in each of her meets and captured the league title in the event. As the yearbook went to press she was a sure bet to capture league and scholastic awards for her efforts, Exten though Thayer may have been sensational, no less sensational were the other members of the team. Seniors lackie Thompson, Alicia Carroll and leanette Belcher turned in outstanding performances in their events. The team is loaded with young ladies with inmense talents. They should be heard from in the league in the coming tears, Some of the returning members of the team are distant runners Marion Bagley Sarah Cox, Ama Stroud, Kellx Clinton, Meg Freeman and Val Eilert.
