Our new environment has increased our pride in our school and ourselves. Together we learned the value of using our time constructively to enhance our future. Kimbrough C.R.L.S. is fortunate to have a faculty member so devoted to the student body as Leslie Kimbrough is. For the past decade, Mr. Kimbrough has participated in student action groups, attended seminars pertaining to student rights and he has worked hard promoting student relations. He has proven himself to be an under- standing and thoughtful person. Whenever we need anyone to talk to, he always respects our views and ideas and for this we thank him and respect him. He always treated us as ‘‘young persons”. He will always be remembered as a true friend. The Yearbook Staff would like to thank Mr. Kimbrough for his hard work and devotion because without him, this yearbook would not have been possible. The Class of 1980 proudly dedicates this yearbook to Mr. Leslie H. Kim- brough. 35 Re, eS a “— IN MEMORIAM porett es eee SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Daa Hs i a Standing: Richard Arthur, treasurer and Mark Clarke, president. We left the school grounds at midnight on Thursday, February 28, and arrived in Quebec Friday morning. The time we spent together here was memorable. We all engaged in different activities, skiing, toboganning, swimming, etc., Friday afternoon, and dined at Le Bonaparte’s Friday night Some students went dancing at The Concorde, while others returned to The Holiday Inn. Saturday was spent skiing, sight-seeing, and swimming. Satur daynight we dined at Le Difference. Afterward we went roller skating at a roller disco. We departed from Quebec at noon on Sunday morning, and arrived in Cambridge at 10:00 Sunday night. Strange how the time that is spent the most meaningfully passes so quickly. Loss after loss the team still got up for the next game. Prior to our last game, our spirits were elevated and they stayed this way until the Turkey Day Game. This was due to our defeat of Weymouth South. It was our first win and it felt good. One of the main reasons we did not do well this year is because we were a young team in the highly competitive Suburban League, Division one. With more experience the team will do better in the future. 125 SENIORS: (L to R) Michelle Johnson, Kathi Hylen, Andrea Grant, Kathy Thibault. Led by the exploits of Mark Themea, Michael Stead, Rob Sheehan, Chris Lange, Ron Crivello and a host of others, the team had an unbeaten season finishing with a record of 7-0. The Cantab Warriors also dominated the voting for the league All-Star team placing Mark Themea, Rob Sheehan, and Mike Stead on the team. CRLS has always been proud of the winning tradition in track and Cross Country over the years, and with this year’s championship, we are on the road to restoring this heritage. 131 The girls Cross Country team began the ‘79 season with five straight victories. Unfortunately tt ended with three losses. The result was a third place finish in the Suburban League. The team did well considering the overall age of the members. It consisted of five freshmen, three sophomores, nine juniors and two seniors. Credit should be given to freshman Thayer Plante who was unde- feated in league meets and finished 10th in the state meet. For the third year in a row, they qualified for the state tournament. The team was led by senior co-captains Kellie Pini and Laurie Cruickshank, and new coach Lorraine Canty. The team played with ex- citement and determination, and was a real crowd pleaser. That’s a term that became as renowned as Patrick Ewing around CRLS during the basketball season. This was truly a year to be remembered. The team and its coaches not only battled foes on the court, they battled in the courts also. To some extnet they learned from both experiences. If the words recruiting and residence require- ments are never heard around here, it will be too soon. J @ Oris Let’s now dwell on the team’s exploits on the hardwood. Led by everyone’s high school All- American Patrick Ewing and senior Karl Hobbs, the team compiled a record of 24-1, losing only to Wilbur Cross of Connecticut. For the second year in a row they captured the Division One State Championship. This was accomplished by the outstanding play of seniors Kevin Robinson, Cap- tain Lou Robinson and Steven Gittens. The sup- porting cast included juniors Kevin Headly, Landon Adair and the incomparable “Peking’’. The coaching staff was tremendous under the leadership of ‘Doc’ Jarvis. His assistants Coach Coccoluto and Coach Martin were valuable assets to that winning effort. The team displayed courage and determination and are to be congratulated for being successful against overwhelming odds. We are truly NUMBER ONE!!! a. 143 i aS Back Row: J. Stephens, L. Barnes, J. We considered this record disappointing because of our State Championship last year and our high hopes as the season started. We also recog- nized the league became stronger, and when you’re on top, everyone wants to knock you off. The decisions rendered by the M.1.A.A. didn’t help our moral a lot either. Terri Riggs, the new coach, and the team felt that despite our record, the season was not a total loss. There were many bright spots including the play of seniors Nora Maldonado, Ne-Ne Stephens and Lisa Barnes. These threee were supported by the excellent plays of Carol Thomas, Tina West, and Sharlene Sturgis. Next year should prove to be an interesting one because of the experiences gained this year. We believe that this was the birth of a strong wrestling team. The team has earned the respect it deserves, and has been granted new facilities. At the beginning of the season the team was underestimated by their opponents, but the team’s discipline and determination earned them victories. The season’s record was 2 wins to 12 losses. This is the most impres- sive record they have ever had. The team is proud because of the many forfeits they received. In one event they were opposed by the top rated team in the state. They were forfeited 30 points yet still managed to accumulate 24 more, losing at an admirable score of 36-24. The stu- dent body should provide more support for this dedicated team. The team is looking forward to a strong ‘80 — '81 season. “We are strong, young and proud.” 156 Varsity team members: Capt. P. Jefferson, P. Darling, D. Mahoney, R. Ferolito, J. Sabatino, J. Student Advocates The Student Advocates organized many successful seminars this year. One seminar focused on adolescent suicide and another seminar was entitled “Can Music Bring Us Together.’’ Pictured on this page is the music seminar. The cafeteria was filled to a standing room only crowd. The panel of music specialists included Sonny Joe White, (KISS 108), Charles Laqueders, (WBCN), Joe Masso, Mackie McLeod, Tommy Hodges, (WXOZ), Reebee Garafalo, and our own Jimmy Smith. The purpose of the seminar was to teach appreciation and understanding of each other’s music. The seminar was a huge success! The advocates also put together a race relations seminar sponsored in conjunction with the Teacher Advisory Program (TAP). The student Advocates also counsel their peers when they need someone to talk to. The advocates are a dedicated, caring group of people and are advised by Larry Aaronson. THE LAW CLUB The club once again had a very active year including several seminars with law enforcement officials. The club’s activities were highlighted by a two hour seminar on consumerism. Two of the guest speakers were Scott Harshbarger, a prominent Cambridge attorney, and Francis Duehay, a Cambridge City Councillor. The students viewed movies on consumerism and watched a skit put on by members of the Law Club. The club’s objective is to get as many students as possible involved in law and to acquaint students with the judicial process. ee Osu se cay re 196 DAY SOTA, Sacco — a My 197 werecausens a eevee rere tt rere feb eprpetopet net sha Aaa bs did | Pore ohey RNY oe bay] eee oe Ft eet eereertet eee evenee reeegeett is Mae raqeerttt i +4 eg ope ceepetete gi The black Student Union, from its founding in 1969, has been zealous in promoting positive programs which depict the contributions of Black Americans to this society. Members partici- pated in hiking, backpacking, canoeing, winter camping, cross-country skiing, rock climbing, and first aid training. Our student leaders, the backbone of our club, gained and tested their leadership skills during the year. All members found a challenge waiting for them which they successfully met through group cooperation. ALPINE SKI CLUB One of the most successful and exciting clubs this year was the CRLS Alpine Ski Club. The club was coordinated by Michael Krasnow, but it was run mostly by and for the students. The club draws members from every program and house in the high school. This year over 400 students and faculty member skied with us doubling last year’s record breaking effort of 200. Although many skied with us more than once this year, over 250 different people participated. In addition 12 of our members were trained by Youth Enrichment Services (Y.E.S.) of Boston to be ski instructors. Due to the sup- port of the school administration, Y.E.S. Services, bake sales, and a very successful ski raffle, we were able to finance trips at the cost of just $10.50 per person. This price included transportation, lift tickets, equipment and ski instruction. We look forward to an even better season next year (but we'll miss the seniors!) . . .
