i—_ ost a? ee IN APPRECIATION MARIE HYDE For her long years of service to Cambridge High and Latin. In her 41 years as teacher, coach, and dean, she has faithfully served the children of Cambridge. For her efforts, understanding, and devotion, we will always be grateful to her. We are better people because we knew her and hope the future will bring her only the best. The year began in general confusion for everyone; no one was certain who would be the new superintendent of schools. The school settled into its normal pace when, after a nationwide search, Alflorence Cheatham was finally appointed to the position. The disappointment over the loss to Rindge in the Turkey Game was soon forgotten in the tumultuous excitement of the boy’s basketball team and its 12-4 record, which left them Suburban League Champions and earned them a place in the Tech Tourney. The Cantabs were eliminated in the first round by Lexington, but the rival Warriors, coached by Mr. Culhane, went all the way in the tourney to win the division II crown. With the parallelism of a Hardy novel, the school ended the way it had begun, on a note of confusion. A new time-saving, day-expanding, student bewildering lunch schedule was introduced. Throughout the halls could be heard the desperate cries ‘“A lunch? What the $% @¢ is A lunch?” SOPHOMORE YEAR — Since there was something new as we finished our first year, there had to be something new as we started our second year of innovative education. We welcomed a new headmaster, Michael L. Turner, as we bid fond farewell to retiring headmaster Raymond D’Arcy. The sports highlight of the year was an unexpected but quite notable 11-3-2 record compiled by the soccer team. With a growing troupe of faithfuls and a good team effort, they made it to the second round in the state tourney. In contrast, the football team scored only one win, which was over Rindge Tech surprisingly enough. While the boy’s basketball team floundered in a winless season, the girls had a flourishing finish and ended with a 10-5 record, a promise of what to expect the next two years. In April, after years of battling with the administration, the student government opened and managed a student lounge. JUNIOR YEAR — With no new superintendent or principal to adjust to, we settled into our first year as upperclassmen. The only change was the retention of deans from the previous year, namely Mr. Joyce and Miss Hyde, who would continue to keep us in line for the remainder of our high school career. The boy’s sports teams were faltering and tumbling into a losing rut as the football team lost to Rindge in the Turkey Game and the basketball team chalked up another winless season. The CHLS name was redeemed as the girl’s basketball team embarrassed most of the Suburban League and emerged the champions with an astonishing 15-1 record. Miss O’Callahan’s coaching and the team’s devotion produced a group of deserving champions not likely to fall with senior graduations. Mr. Turner’s innovative touch could be felt as we enjoyed a look at our own and other’s cultures during International Week. SENIOR YEAR — True to form, the year began with another leader, superintendent William C. Lannon. The first hint that we were really, and finally, seniors was the election of class officers. After the October campaign Phil Carrieri was president; Lenny Sciarappa, vice-president; Paula Bourget, secretary; and Patricia Tomsick, treasurer. : With Coach Weaver’s training, the football team’s record improved to 4-5; they lost to Rindge in the rivalrous Turkey Game 8 to 0. The boy’s basketball team remained in its rut, but gained notoriety as Channel 4’s Len Berman took a sympathetic stand and vowed to report the games until the Cantabs dribbled their way to a win. Happily the girls did not suffer the same fate. With a 14-0 regular season record and a league championship, you certainly can’t complain, only hope for a repeat. College applications and job interviews preoccupied our year, but between writing our names on forms and biting our nails to the nubs, we enjoyed the success of the ski trip and the prom. For all the disappointments we might have had, we can look back on high school fondly. If we are not four years smarter, we are certainly four years wiser. Life moves on, and so must we. RAH! RAH!
