Toomey One who will always be remembered in the hearts of both teachers and students. His presence in our school will long be missed. How sad is living and not being love want 166 CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN YEAR Our high school career got off to an uneasy start as the school committee decided to resume the nationwide search for a superintendent that had prematurely terminated a year earlier by the appointment of Frank Frisoli during the unrest of 1969-70. The furor culmi- nated in a tumultuous school committee meeting, which was followed by several days of incessant false alarms (seven in one day). One of the first events of our freshman year was the French Club’s trip to the White Mountains, which, despite a long bus ride, was enjoyed by all. Although it was two days late, the Turkey Day Classic, won by the Cantabs, generated the usual enthusiasm. The music department celebrated the Yuletide with a caroler’s march from City Hall to Harvard Square, where the band and choral groups performed Christmas carols as the gathering crowds joined in. Beginning in January, a constitutional convention was held to replace the old Student Council and Student Uruon which had dissolved during the tense years preceding our arrival. The convention produced what promised to be a workable Student Government. That spring also saw the start of permanent student representation on the school commit- tee. We were all proud to note that the first student representative was a member of the class of 1975. SOPHOMORE YEAR The year began with general uncertainty as to who would be the new Superintendent of Schools. Alflorence Cheatham was finally appointed and we settled back into our normal pace. Our loss to Rindge in the Turkey game was forgotten as our ever improving basketball team, with a 12-4 record, became the Suburban League Champions and entered the Tech Tourney. The Cantabs were eliminated in the first round by Lexington, but the Warriors, coached by our own Mr. Culhane, went all the way in the Tourney to win the Division II crown. After months of debate with faculty and administration, the CHLS Student Government finally came into existence. The results of the first election showed that the Student Gov- ernment would be composed mostly of sophomores. The highlights of the year were the Christmas Pops and the Spring Concert. Playing such pieces as the Nutcracker Suite, the William Tell Overture, and the 1812 Overture with incredible virtuousity, the CHLS orchestra delighted its listeners with continually superb performances. The school year ended on a note of confusion as we switched to the new lunch schedule. Throughout the halls could be heard the despondent cries, ‘What lunch do I eat today?!” JUNIOR YEAR To begin our first year as upperclassmen, we welcomed our new headmaster, Michael Turner; he was replacing retiring headmaster Raymond D’Arcy, who moved across the street to be a consultant. The soccer team drew capacity crowds as it compiled an excellent 11-3-2 record and went to the second round in the State Tourney. The football team scored its only win of the season in an 18-6 victory over Rindge. While the boys basketball team floundered in a winless season, the girls finished the year with a record of ten wins and five losses, a promise of great things to come. In April, after years of fighting with the administration, the Student Government opened and managed a student-run student lounge. It was open only periods 2,3, and 4, but it was so successful that we could look forward to next year, when it would be open all day. SENIOR YEAR Our senior year began with a breathlessly close election: Leonard Vigilante beat Paul Chotkowski by three votes for class president, and Charles Robinson defeated Peter Clarke by one vote for v.p. John Balfe was elected treasurer, Connie Bettencourt secretary. The lounge opened up for the full day and soon became an integral part of the school environment. We also were faced with the happy prospect that the boys cafeteria might soon become a sub shop and a pool and ping-pong hall. The loss to Rindge in the Turkey game and the continued winless streak of the boys basketball team were redeemed as the girls basketball team became the Suburban League Champions with an astonishing 15-1 record. The highlights of the spring were the ski trip, international week, and the senior prom, all of which were great successes. It has been a good four years. We’ve seen many changes: a new superintendent and a new headmaster. We’ve also suffered some disappointments: the new high school will probably never be built. But as we look back on our high school days, let us hope, above all, that we left it a better place than we found it.
