Wrestling Team O ala Gy )ypve  ) FOOTBALL The Cantabs returned from summer camp this year with new offensive and defensive systems installed. The coaches were very pleased with the early development of the team. To the dismay of the team and the coaches, the Cantabs repeatedly fell victim to goliath teams such as; South Boston, Don Bosco, Xavarian, and Weymouth South. The spirit of Coach Coady and his assistants never faltered. The coaches con- tinually instilled that same spirit into their own players. Entering the Thanksgiving Day Game, the Cantabs had a record of 0-7-1 as compared to Rindgeâs record of 6-2. Coming into the game with adrenalin flowing, the Cantabs repeatedly thwarted Rindgeâs attack and dominated offensive play. The final result was Latinâs trouncing of Rindge, 18-6. Special congratulations should be given to the coaching staff for the immeasurable amount of time and effort which they con- tributed throughout the season. Seniors who participated on this yearâs team were: Mark Lyons â co-captain Phil Muolo â co-captain Chris Arena Gary Davis Tony Doman Kevin Fitzpatrick John Frangos Steve Khourie Paul Lombardi Joe Riccardi Bill Sherwood Ed Small Joe Whelan Phil Muolo â74 SOCCER The CHLS soccer team enjoyed a very successful season in the Suburban League this year. The Cantabs finished with a record of 11 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties, good for second place in the league. They also won one game in the state tournament. The team started the season with two quick losses, but then stunned their opponents by rattling off seven straight wins. The Cantabs battled for first place all season long and just lost out after a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at the hands of Newton, the league champion. There were many exciting games, but several stand out as the most important. Two, one goal victories, 4-3 over Arlington, and 3-2 over powerful Brockton, started the team on its winning streak. Other key victories included wins over Brookline (3-1), Medford (2-0), and the great tournament triumph over Winchester (1-0). Although the success was the result of unselfish team play, CHLS had some individual stars. Tri-captain Paul Lombardi was named to the league all-star team, along with forward Chris Litopoulos. Center-half Costa Georgakopoulos, and right wing Ernie Souza were second all star team selections. Tony Doman, starred at center full-back and bailed the team out of many tough situations with his long kicks. The Cantab front line was one of the most formidable offenses in the state. Besides Litopoulos (14 goals) and Souza (10 goals), Sal Fan- tasia (8 goals), Athas Paicopoulos (6 goals), Alex Goulpoulos (5 goals), Jimmy Papagianopoulos and Lou Miele all contributed to the attack. In the crucial mid-field area, center-half Georgakopoulos dominated many games with his ball control and passing. Senior Tri-captains Gene Goodwin and Murray Kenney provided experience in the vital halfback position and were backed up by senior Peter Barbosa, a 4-year veteran, and seniors Phil Burke and Joe Carson. The defense was led by Lombardi, who allowed only 22 goals in 16 games and had 8 shutouts. Seniors Ken Rodrigues, another 4-year vet- eran, David Bonislawski and Dave Bradeen, and junior Don Rebello played alongside Doman in the middle and provided excellent support for Lombardi. A great amount of credit for the teamâs success must go to coach Fran Foley. Mr. Foley was in his last year of coaching and he went out a winner. The team started to win after he moved some players around and his leadership and knowledge of the game helped the team tremen- dously. Credit must also be given to J.V. coach Andrew Inglis, who has given J.V. soccer a permanent place in CHLS athletics in just two years. Athas Paicopoulos and Don Rebello were two starters who had graduated from last yearâs junior varsity and next year, there should be several more former J.V. players on the varsity squad. Murray Kenney BOYâS HOCKEY TEAM The hockey team at CHLS had an up-and-down season, finishing with a record of seven wins and nine losses. The Cantabs had a satisfying year considering the loss of many key players through graduation, transfer, and injury. The squad had only four experienced players at the beginning of the season, so most of the team was ââthrown to the wolvesâ right from the outset. The team responded to the challenge, howev- er, and surprised and impressed observers with their skating and hustle. They were never outskated by the opposition, and, save for a third- period letdown against powerful Arlington, were in contention in every game. Most of the victories were team efforts, but several players displayed good individual skills as well. Senior forward David Lange scored one third of the teamâs goals and was joined on the Suburban League all-star team by junior defenseman Steven OâBrien, who played most of every game. Senior forwards Steven Crusco (Captain and top penalty-killer) and Jack Baumer, a swift right wing, were forced to take up the slack when front-liners Mark Crusco and senior Mark McCaffery were injured for long periods to time. Junior center Steven Foster scored several important goals, while the third line of juniors Ed Sheridan and Steve Shea and sophomore Jim Donohue showed great promise for next year. On defense, seniors Paul Lombardi and Murray Kenney played steadily, if unspectacularly, while sophomore George Yeomalakis showed potential to be a future all-star. The team had a strong defensive record, and one of the main reasons was the goaltending of senior Gary Tingle and junior Manny Bonita- tibus. Tingle had several good efforts in both victories and close defeats while Bonitatibus backstopped the team to important wins over Waltham and Weymouth South. Coach Fitzgerald should also take some credit for winning seven games with a largely inexperienced team in the highly competitive Suburban League. Mr. Fitzgerald was ably assisted by Don Harrison and J.V. coach Mr. Kelley. BOYâS BASKETBALL Looking at our team superficially, one could at best say that we had not played up to our potential. However, | think that because of alack of sufficient playing time last year, several players on our squad this year did not mature in time to warrant a stronger, winning team. Due to Murray Kenney this general lack of experience, our team made many mistakes this year that a more experienced, more cohesive team would never have made, and these mistakes cost us many games. At the outset of this yearâs basketball season, most people were optimistic about our chances of making the state tournament. With two re- turning veterans, forward Ron Eutsey and guard Richie Giacoppo, the â73-â74 team promised to produce many winning efforts. However, it was not to be. Sidelined with painful tendonitus in his knee, the 5â11ââ Giacoppo missed the first three games. As he was slowly working him- self back into shape, he broke his foot and was subsequently lost for the season. Averaging over twenty points per game through the first half of the year, 6â3ââ forward Ron Eutsey was headed for all-league honors when he tore ligaments in his ankle and was also lost for the season. The loss of these two talented players was truly a setback for the Cantabs as we strove for a winning season. Filling in admirably in their place, juniors John Balfe and Henry Morris contributed much to the Latin cause. The other forward, 62â, three year man John Vetter had a somewhat disappointing year. Bedridden with a nagging throat infection, Vetter missed a third of the season, and was some time getting back into playing shape. As the season progressed, Vetter slowly regained his fine shooting touch, reaching his peak against Rindge as he scored twenty-four points. Rounding out for the front court was 6â4ââ Peter Mahoney upon whose shoulders much of the burden of this yearâs dismal record fell. | often found myself feeling very discouraged and downtrodden, for believe me, it is tough being the captain of a winless squad. 5â8ââ guard, Kenny Eisnor, provided the badly needed ball handling and play-making that had been lacking since Giacoppoâs departure. 5â7ââ sophomore Conall Ryan showed great promise in starting half of the games this year. Were it not for 6â forward John Frangos, | believe that none of us would have been able to smile during the course of the season. Through his acoustical effects and general comedy routine, Frangos did his best to alleviate the feeling of depression that prevailed on the team. In addition to his role as team comedian, Frangos would come off the bench and inspire the team with his hustle and constant ball hawking. Johnâs overall attitude would be an asset in itself to any team. Completing the roster were senior forwards Loyd Lewis and David Barry, two personable, solid teammates, junior forward Cameron Edey, who posses a deft shooting touch from around the key area, senior guard John Voltolini, who did a comendable job coming off the bench this year, and junior guards Clayton Reed and Randy Rose, two prospects for next yearâs team. In many ways this past season has been a disappointing, sometimes bitterly discouraging ordeal. Thinking positively though, because such fine all round athletes as John Balfe, Henry Morris, and Conall Ryan are returning next year, the '74-'75 season should be successful. If it is, then this year will not have been in vain, for at least we will have built a team for the future. | would like to thank Coach Balfe for never giving up this year. | think he realized that all of us gave 150% all the time. | would like also to thank assistant coaches Theodore Martin and Charles Killilea for their efforts during my four years at Latin. Without these men, the basketball program could never have produced two state tournament teams in the last four years. Finally, | would like to give special thanks to our dedicated, hard working cheerleaders. | would not trade this group of girls for any other cheerleaders anywhere. Despite our winless record they never failed to try to inspire us to victory, and for that | am grateful. They are: senior captains Diane Remeika and Rosali Chinappi, seniors Lori Cavallaro, Darlene Ronchetti, and Laura Morrison, juniors Robin White, Michele Ferdinand, Liz Hickey, Diane Cogswell, Peggy Casey, and Karen Paysnick. | wish the best of luck to the â74-â75 Cantab team as they attempt to regain the reputation Cambridge Latin basketball is noted for. Peter Mahoney '74 captain INDOOR TRACK The indoor trac k season did not prove to be as productive as it could have been. The teamâs main problem was !ack of experience and depth. The team could win most of the races in a meet, but without the seconds and thirds, the team came to a halt in point accumulation and ended up on the short end of the score. Even though the team had a limited number of runners, they managed to win a meet against Brookline. Along with this victory, there were several close meets against Arlington, Weymouth North, and Rindge. Though there was only one victory, there were several outstanding per- formers throughout the season. Co-captain Mark Lyons repeatedly raced to victory in the 300 yard dash. Co-captain Frank Madallo turned in consistent performances in the mile, his best time being 4:56. Jerry Farrell was an asset to the team running the mile and two mile. Chris Li- topoulos and Phil Burke scored many points in both the high jump and hurdles. New comer Tony Doman won the 50 yard dash in several meets. Other senior performers were James Connolly throwing the shot put and running the 50, and Ted Leotsaukos throwing the shot. The team should be more productive next year with its outstanding juniors and shophomores. Frank Maddaio GIRLâS BASKETBALL The Girlâs Varsity Basketball team finished their season with a 10 win â 5 loss record, good enough for third place in the tough Suburban League. Their record could have easily been 12-3, suffering a one point loss to Brockton, and losing a heartbreaker, to Waltham, in an over- time contest. Two important factors for their successful season were team play and team spirit. The members of the team were seniors; cap- tain Audrey Cabral, Yani Batteau, Renny Santos, and Carolyn DeLeo, junior; Camille OâBrien, sophomores Maureen Goddard and Debbie Stead, and freshmen; Thresa Muolo and Terry Shinkwin. Although the Varsity is losing four starters, the outlook for the next season is very bright. Special thanks go to Miss Linda DiBerto, varsity coach, and Mrs. Ellen O'Neill, j.v. coach. Audrey Cabral '74 GIRLSâ FIELD HOCKEY Girlsâ Field Hockey, in its second year, proved to be a disappointment. They supported a poor record of 0 wins, 6 losses, and 4 ties. Although the record does not look very good on paper, the girls did not play that poorly. Two reasons for their dismal season were that the girls did not quite get their adrenalin flowing until late in the game and, also, they were unable to put the ball into the goal. It should be noted that if the team had better transportation to the field instead of by MBTA, better field conditions, and more school spirit, then the girls would have definitely done better. AS we nervously tramped into the auditorium, reality hit us: WE WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL!!! Once our initiation was completed, we all settled down to common errors, tests, and homework. Our football team ended a winning season by beating our arch rivals, Rindge Tech, in the annual Turkey Game. In February, a building-up of racial tensions caused some trouble. How- ever, faculty and student meetings, along with the usual February vacation allowed everyone to cool off. School resumed and the few remaining months sped by. SOPHOMORE YEAR As our sophomore year began, we became more involved in school activi- ties, by joining clubs and trying out for various sports. The Cantabs, much to the delight of their fans, once again defeated Rindge in the Turkey Game. Our second year was marred by a rash of false fire alarms. They were all brought about by the planned firing of Superintendent Frisoli. However, June arrived, and all hoped that the problem would be resolved by Sep- tember. We also greeted our new-comers with such helpful information as, ââroom 212? Isn't that on the third floor?â and âââItâs alright to cut. The deans won't say anything!ââ JUNIOR YEAR At last we were upperclassmen! The majority of us invaded the seniorâs haven, the third floor, and promptly began strutting around, as all good and true upperclassmen do. Along with our newly achieved status, we welcomed our new Superintendent, Mr. Cheatham. The Turkey Game was won by the Rindge Tech Warriors this year. But this loss was forgotten as the ever improving Cantab basketball team became the Suburban League Champs, and entered the Tech Tourney. The Cantabs were eliminated after a heartbreaking loss to Lexington, but the Warriors, coached by our very own Mr. Culhane, went all the way in the Tourney, capturing the Division II crown. Other highlights of the year were the Christmas Pops and Spring Concert, put on by our school orchestra and choral group. It was a superb perform- ance by all. Our junior year ended on a note of total confusion as we tried out a new schedule. Through the halls could be heard the despondent cries, âââWhat lunch do | eat today?ââ SENIOR YEAR For once in our lives, we were anxious for the school year to begin. En- tering the senior year with us was our new headmaster, Michael Turner. Mr. DâArcy, who held Latin together for our first three years, moved across the street as a consultant. Elections, held in October, showed that Frank Maddalo was president, Steve Johnson vice-president, Ron Rose secretary, and Jerry Farrell trea- Surer. Our soccer team made it to the second round of the State Tourney after completing a fantastic 11-3-2 record. Thanksgiving was celebrated with the Cantabsâ first and most important win of the season over Rindge, 18-6. While the boys sported a winless season during the first half of Basket- ball, the girls, becoming stronger every game, had a record of 10 wins, 5 losses. This has been a busy year for the majority of us, as we fill out many applications for college, and get ready for the ski trip and prom. Itâs been a long four years. Itâs been a great four years: four years that we will never forget.
