Clayton Haley Director of Art Audio Visual Education CRYSTAL A tiny speck, its presence first unknown, ls gradually discerned, and to the eye Its mass takes on a form; as time goes by It constantly expands, for thus is grown A Crystal, nature’s gem. Its growth has shown ‘AA miracle of symmetry to vie With man’s most perfect jewels, by contrast dry. This mystery of growth is God’s alone. We too are growing; do we ever show Such steady growth, such form so well refined? And are the many facets of our lives So carefully, so beautifully combined? If we, like sparkling crystals, aim aright We must absorb, and yet reflect, God’s light. No mermen and mer- maids haunt the ruins; the only evidence of a former human population is the sheaf of paper which one explorer has found. He discovers that the civilization of Atlantis was strangely similar to that of a certain Cambridge high school. He reads: FRESHMAN Over 700 bewildered grammar school grad- uates entere d C. H. L. S. in the fall of ‘61. From the begining the Freshman took part in school activities. The first event was the G. A. A. initiation for which new members decorated boxes to carry books from class to class. Awards were given for the boxes most cleverly designed. Dramatic Freshmen took part in the highly suc- cessful play, Once There Was a Princess for the Interclass Plays. Despite the cheers of the Freshmen at the Football Rally, the Cantabs lost the Turkey Game. An additional facility was added at C.H.L.S. upon the instillation of the Language Lab. Other firsts were a change in the schedule of the day to seven periods and four lunch periods for enterprising students, and the revival of the school newspaper, published as the Forum un- der the direction of Mr. Peter Budryk. At social and athletic events attracting the 108 Freshmen, from the G. A. A. Harvest Hop to the last swimming meet, we underclassmen ea- gerly participated. SOPHOMORE In ‘62, three class members of our Sopho- more class, Richard McKinnon, Scott Burns, and Helen Gratovich were elected to the Student Council. School spirit was at the successes of both the track team, which held the Metropoli- tan League Championship, and the baseball team, which played at the State Tournament. The English Department in co-operation with the Dramatic Club sponsored an off-beat ver- sion of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Proceeds from the school performance were donated to the Anna P. Butler Scholarship Fund; our play went on to win three Drama Festivals: Prelimin- ary, Massachusetts State, and New England. Two innovations this year were Greek classes and a school library. The library, which was begun in the spring, would occupy two large classrooms on the first floor. JUNIOR 1963 began in C. H. L. S. with a new look. Our Latin Hall had been partitioned into Study Halls, and an Advanced Placement Biology course was added to the curriculum. A Mental Health Career Club was started for which stu- dents gave their time to entertain retarded and other emotionally ill children. CLASS HISTORY Junior members of the K. B. worked en- thusiastically to make the K. B. semi-formal, the King and Queen of hearts ball, a welcome substitute for a junior prom. Although the Dramatic Club with the English Department worked towards a production of The Rivals, lack of interest in our school prevented any performances. The shocking news of the assassination of our president was anounced to us; we resumed our school activities preoccupied with his death. Richard McKinnon, Scott Burns, Frances Walsh, and Paul Lohnes ably supported our Junior class as members of the Student Council. The year ended with the sudden realization that the 1964-65 year would be our last in C. H. [5 SENIOR Senior elections overshadowed the national election this year. Our class voted Richard Mc- Kinnon president, Paul Lohnes vice president, Helder Costa treasurer, and William Hazel- w ood secretary. J. Deidre Wheeler was Brecon C. H. L. S. good citizen and D. A. R. representa- tive of our school. Her speech on School and Commerce Day welcomed Cambridge officials to our auditorium. Winers of the essay contest on the School and Commerce Day program were | Edwin Wolf, Brendon Sullivan, and Cecilia Ficaro. Kathy Morris won the Betty Crocker 109 Homemaker of Tomorrow Award, and seven other senior girls scored ‘‘superior’’ on the test. Julian Smith received first place in the annual essay on George Washington. The Dramatic Clubs’ senior members pre- sented The Madwoman of Chailott in which Andrea Ramagna played her first leading role. One of the most successful events of the year was the play Camolot given by the Dramatic Club, with the proceeds donated to the Ken- nedy Memorial Library fund. Those of us plannig to go on to higher ed- ucation are anxiously waiting to hear from the college of our choice, while others are franti- cally searching for the right type of work to go into after graduation. At the same time, we feel that we will miss our years in C. H. L. S. As the explorer finishes reading aloud this information, one of his companions has dis- covered a camera. Examining the film, the men realize that someone had taken a picture of loitering and smoking mermaids and mer- men. Well, that’s one thing that isn’t parallel to the culture at C. H. L. S. Gale Fox Nancy Mosca Victor Nevoshko Rose Marie Stevenson CLASS PROPHECY After a ten year hitch as advertising man- ager for a resort in Antarctica a severe case of hay fever forced me to return to the healthful Massachusetts climate. In my feverish search for a cure | visited that well known specialist Helder Costa who referred me to his noted col- league Deidre Wheeler. Deidre decided that a little. entertainment would do me more good than any medicine. | hailed a cab and was much surprised to see smiling John Ciccolo be- hind the wheel. In town | had my choice of seeing the ballet in which our old friend Suz- anne Jackson was the prima ballerina, or a new play starring Andrea Romagna. There was also a remake of The Carpetbaggers starring our beloved classmate Carlos De Carvalho as the carpetbag. Passing Symphony Hall | saw a bill advertising that famed duo Julian and Heather Smith. The next day | felt depressed so | decided to go to the circus. | bought a bag of peanuts from Billy Fulginite and took my seat. The 110 mistress of ceremonies, Ann Fleming, announc- ed the first act and the show began. Mark Delaney, Paula Paris, and Marcia Wegman per- formed a daring trapeze act, followed by Mike Plummer on the high wire. Then came the clowns: Paul Lohnes, Paul Riley, Charley Quinn, Phil McClaughlin, Tommy Bacci, George Lan- non, and featuring Skip McCarthy. After this a short intermission in which Ned Wolfe and Jim Sargent swept up the excess sawdust. After intermission, that world famous magician Joey Salvia produced a sensation by pulling David Coady out of a hat. Next an amazing exhibi- tion by the Human Cannon Ball, Scott Burns. Dino Egidio surprised everyone by jumping 40 feet into a basin of water. Walking home from the circus | passed Nancy Mosca’s Pizza Palace where Phil Sul- livan was making a pizza in the window. A few blocks further on Dave Helberg and Richie Sleeper were pasting up a billboard advertising the opening of Bernie Green’s new race track. CLASS PROPHECY During the night there was a huge fire down the street. We all rushed out just in time to see Chief Frank De Maio giving orders to his men: Sam Gallo, Geoffrey Resnick, Brian Riley, Joe Vitale, Peter Brown, and Rudy Carbone. There was friction because reporters: Gale Fox, Kathy Morris, Nancy Pincus, and Victor Lavoshko kept getting in the way of the firemen. Finally police- men Roy Eisnor and Bobby Fitzgerald shooed us away. The next day | visited Jeanette Doyle's fashion salon. She was having a consultation with her three head designers Barbara James, Maureen Blaho, and Kathy Barker. Her fall selection was being modeled by Frani Walsh, Evelyn Travers, Linda lamonte, Nina Kalosha, and Sandra Theodore. Stopping at Brigham’s afterwards, we were served by Richard Cooper. At the next table we saw a group of nurses on their break: Janis Lehane, Faye Cassassa, Janet King, Sandra Cabral, and Linda Hanner talking with physical therapist Billy Hazelwood. Dixie Gravel walked in to buy a lollipop from Janice McCarthy. Standing around waiting for booths were bank tellers Linda Williams, Loretta Guinta, and Cindy Hazlitt. Bonnie McCleod and Mary Ann Donofrio were waiting on tables and bringing in dishes for Salvatore Della Cioppa to wash. After two weeks of this gay life | decided to return to my post in Antarctica. | went to the travel bureau where Myrna Norris helped me get a ticket home. | was surprised to find that Phylis Thorn had won a trip to Hawaii in a tiddly winks contest. On the day of my departure | arrived at the airport early and met the pilot, Richie McKin- non, and the co-pilot, Tommy Scott. The stewardesses, Donna Scalcione, Ruth Frisch, and Wanda Kajunski made all the passengers com- fortable. Ten hours later | arrived home and settled down to my work again. Led by Co-captains Robert Brooks and Harold Werlin, the team qualified for the state meet at the University of Massachusetts. At the state meet Tom Zukuskas missed the finals by one-tenth of a second, while the freestyle relay qualified for the finals. With the loss of some of Cambridge High and Latin’s greatest track stars, the Cantabs were expected to win one or two meets at the most this past indoor track season. But surprisingly enough the Cantabs finished the season in a three-way tie for third in the Metropolitan Track League. The indoor tratk team consisted of only a handful of seniors; namely, Ken Hughs, George Lannon, Dave Kendall, Steve Lawrence, Ed Headly, Mike Plummer, and Bill Hazelwood. Their fine efforts and performance, along with that of the underclassmen, accounted for the Cantab’s success. Next year’s track outlook is optimistic for Cambridge Latin will have a team capable of carrying on Latin’s winning tradition. 137 BASEBALL The 1964 Baseball Team, although lacking experience, gained five victories. Of the starting nine players five were Juniors. Among them were this season’s Captain-elect Paul Riley, Roy Eisnor, Bill Fulginite, Richie Cabral, and John Ciccolo. Last year Captain Joe Elciwitz encountered a leg injury in the early part of the season and was sidelined. Other important senior players on last year’s team were Jim Remeika, John Pakstis, Tim Murphy, Francis Kelly, Ed Pulaski, and Warren McMurrow. With seven lettermen from last year’s team return- ing, we have great hopes for the ‘65 season. John. Giccolo 138 FOOTBALL The team’s 1964 record of two wins and seven losses, is in no way indicative of the brand of football played by the Cantabs during the 1964 season. The team always held its own; and it was never counted out of any ball game. The coaching staff, headed by John Noble, who is ably assisted by Richard Fusco, Peter Budryk, and James Coady, provided the boys with a lot more than a knowledge of foot- ball fundamentals. They played tough football, to be sure, but they also played with the fairness and dignity one would ex- pect to find amongst true athletes. Co-captained by Rich McKinnon ana Steve Edmonds, the team had its share of stars. Richie Cabral did a tremendous job at quarterback. Along with our explosive end Jay Gurry, he formed the nucleus of the Cambridge attack. The formida- ble forward wall was anchored by Steve Edmonds. Flanking the big center and providing the team with a wealth of ag- gressive line play were Richie Campbell and Bob Colannino. Campbell, by the way, and Charlie Barger have been elected as co-captain of the 1965 squad. Two victories, one of them over inter city rival St. Marys, highlighted a season which was climaxed by a heartbreaking loss to Rindge. However, each player walked off the field on Thanksgiving day with an irreplaceable feeling of self-respect; a feeling which God grants only to those who have given their all. —Richard McKinnon 139 FOOTBALL TEAM First row, left to right: Charles Barger, Brian Reilly, Gerald Gurry, Fred O'Leary, Robert Brooks, Richard Cabral, Steve Edmonds, Richard McKinnon, Samual Merchant, Robert Colaninno, Clyde McCarthy, James Spencer, Michael Harrison. Missing the Tech Tourney by only one game, we climaxed a dramatic season by easily defeating Rindge. Richie Sleeper, voted to the Suburban League All-Star Team, led all scorers with a 19 point per game average. Co-captain Phil Sullivan won the foul shooting trophy with a .747 percentage. Other starters were Dave Helberg, the teams leading rebounder, playmaker Roy Eisnor, and defensive specialist John Niven. The deciding game for the Tech Tourney took place at Brookline. The Cantabs lost a heartbreaker 62-61 on two foul shots with no time remain- ing on the clock. In any case, our team played an exciting style of basket- ball and was respected by every team in the Suburban League. —John Ciccolo 143 Kae s pga ao (erp ty ween, “ % 0¢ i 4 7 HOCKEY TEAM First row, left to right: Billy Burke, Steve O’Connor, Johnny Cronin, Tom Murphy, Pierre Marchand, Joe St. Tommy Remeika, Frank O'Brian, Ed Donahue, Skip Mc- George, Mike Stansbury, Ed Reed, Jay Walsh, Steve Carthy, Peter Marfeoni, Kevin McPhelim, Joe Riendeau. Second row, left to right: Billy Gibbons, Bobby Chisholm, Although injuries hampered the team throughout the season, an all out team effort gained two decisive victories over arch-rival Rindge Tech, 5-2 and 6-3. Behind the final record of 3-9-2 lie three close defeats, each by one goal. Indeed, a fifth place finish in the strong G. B. |. league was not a bad exhibition for a team lacking experience and rostering only four seniors. The members of Latin’s ‘65 hockey team would like to thank coach Fitzgerald and trainer ‘‘Doc’’ Linsky for their help and guidance throughout the season. —Francis O’Brien 147 = = ans x 150 ii Gets jer ee r — e dceeee é TECHNOLOGY bury u The presentation of the proceeds of Camelot to the Kennedy Memorial Library. The many friendly faces, the patient thoughtful teachers, and the familiar walls of C. H. L. S. will soon be a part of the past, to be recalled wistfully and revered as happy, carefree days. We are un “le to see what the future holds for us. We do not know if we shail ever meet again, but we do know that we shall never forget each other. Each time we thumb through these pages in the years to come, our hearts will be refreshed with beloved memories.
