CLEVELAND That name is known to every member of the class of ’35 as belonging to a man who is just, far-sighted, kindly, and inspiring of admiration and veneration. On first real contact with him four years ago, any pre- mature misgivings evaporated; since that contact is inevita- ble in the first days of high school, for many reasons, it was not long before the whole class knew him as he really is. We could not better express our enthusiasm for Mr. Cleveland than to wish for many future classes the honor of affiliation with this fine man, who has so strengthened our purposes and lighted our paths these four years. But these temptations I must all deny: I’ve learned that this wherein I am is only A starting-place, a maze in which I have To find my path and folbow to its outlet. My way is not like yours, nor you nor I Have Theseus’ perfect-guiding twine to follow. We have, however, patience and some self-knowledge, And these may help us find the exit sought. The exit fpund will be the entrance dear To the happy world outside; for only when We find the talent in ourselves are we Allowed to leave, — the talent in ourselves And good relations with our fellow-men. HARRY MORTON JOHNSON. 121 1931 — 1932 Entered the portals of C. H. L. S. for the first time, as dwarfish, scrawny innocent, and yet proud a class of Freshman as ever exasperated our noble faculty. All hopes of athletic fame were soon crushed at sight of the swaggering, brawny upperclassmen, and our intellectual self-confidence evaporated on seeing the ““Review’’, hearing prize debaters, and listening to Seniors talk. ( I wonder if the class of ’38 is justified in looking up to us?) 1932 — 1933 Promoted — for the most part — to the second floor. As a few of us became substitutes in the major sports, and some of our stories were taken by the school paper, haughtiness and disgust of Freshman took possession. During this year many learned that brief cases and five or six books an evening were beneath their dignity, and book knowledge was left to a few “grinds.”’. 1933 — 1934 Now condescension is an epidemic. We patronize the lower classes, the Seniors, and even the teachers. A supercilious smirk and a dapper manner are all that is necessary. Gum chewing and candy munching, so assiduously stepped on as childish, now reappear as grown up, proper, and smart. In December came that long anticipated event, the class election. The campaigning was unusually keen. Being the first election, it aroused great interest. Elaborate cards with candidate blurbs, blotters with slogans, im- portant bustlings and rustlings of paper, all this ended in the el ection of William Skelley as president, Dorothy Cummings as vice-president, Mar- garet Mahoney as secretary, and Evariste Shea as treasurer. Arthur Des- rosier, Rita Navarro, Werner Neudorf, James O’Brien, Celia Presser, and Louise Toomey were elected to membership of the Ring Committee. Of the many candidates for the Prom Committee, these five came out on top: sitet a Barbara Fox, Paul Moriarty, Frances O’Brien, and Lester itchford. On April 20, the Junior Prom was held at the Hotel Commander. Ruby Newman’s orchestra contributed much toward making it a great success. 1934 — 1935 In November came the Senior election. Even more elaborate than the first, it was: there were posters in the halls and signs on lamp posts out- side! Paul Mahoney, well known for his genial personality and stellar 122 CAMBRIDGE Firéen AND LATIN SCHOOL gridiron work, was invested with the office of president, and he makes a very dignified and capable official. Dorothy Cummings and Margaret Mahoney were reelected, and Roland Denault won the treasurer’s position. There were two committees, the Reception and the Drama. The members of the former were Ada Bradbury, Charles McFarland, Paul Moriarty, Werner Neudorf and Lester Pitchford. Margaret Crowley, Marguerite Erickson, Saul Fram, Barbara Hamilton, George La Bar and Mary Murray were elected to the latter. Florence Austin replaced Werner Neudorf on the pin committee. On December 6, a poverty party was held in the gym. Paul ‘‘Morey’s” fine band furnished the music. This was the first social of the year, and there was a good attendance. Two seniors won recognition in the Liberty Prize Speaking contest; Ruth Zirsch won first place among the girls with ‘‘Mansions’”’, and on the boys’ side, Saul Fram’s “The Scarecrow” won honorable mention. On May 18, the football dance was held at Brattle Hall. The letter men were awarded their sweaters, and, despite heat and the crowd, every- one enjoyed him or herself. On May 24 was the Senior Drama, “Berkeley Square”, in the Rindge auditorium. Owing to the unfortunate accident of our splendid coach, Miss Hartigan, the production had been postponed from the middle of Feb- ruary, but interest revived again, and the Drama was no amateurish pre- sentation. The graduation exercises will take place Tuesday, June 11, at Rindge. Our social exit, the Senior Reception, also comes after this book goes to press. It is to be held, with M. I. T.’s kind permission, at Walker Me- morial, on June 15. Let us hope that it is as successful as the high stan- dard set in former years indicates. And so we take our leave of C. H. L. S. All of us feel that no school could be better, academically or socially. Whatever happens in later years, the memories of these last four will never be erased, or even fade with age. 123 SENIOR RECEPTION COMMITTEE Paul Moriarty, Ada Bradbury, Charles MacFarland, Werner Neudorf, Lester Pitchford, Chairman (Sitting). +3 se neesaesee: seeesestiies PIN COMMITTEE Celia Presser, Arthur Desrosier, Florence Austin, Louise Toomey, Rita Navarro (sitting). 124 FOOTBALL TEAM (Coach), F. O’Connell, L. Pitchford, B. Romonas, G. Nichols, T. Goulard (Mgr.). Front Row: P. Murphy, D. Regnier, P. Mahoney, J. Gomes, W. Neudorf (Capt.), F. Coady (Capt.-elect), C. Sullivan, E. Saulnier, E. Gargano. FOOTBALL The initial practice of the squad showed a scarcity of experienced ma- terial. Coach Sheehan and Assistant-Coach Kelleher faced a discouraging task, but found some encouragement in the spirit and confidence of the in- experienced members of the squad. The accomplishment of both the coaches and the members of the team under such trying circumstances has earned recognition. Deserving of mention are: Richard Casey, giant 195-pound tackle, who performed marvels at his post. Dick blocked two kicks this year on cur enemy’s goal line and recovered them for a touchdown both times. Willard Mitchell, Latin’s ace in the hole, who received passes from Pitch- ford for scores. Paul Mahoney, our great half-back, who was included in the all-scholastic team of Greater Boston. Joseph Stankunas, another great tackle, who gave a little spirit. Frank Harney, who was a consistent player at guard, played an aggressive game on the offence and was one of the best defensive players Latin had last year. And last, but not least, there is Cornelius Sullivan, a boy who deserves much credit for the way he han- dled himself in many trying circumstances. Connie is only a Junior and should be a star next year for the ‘‘Red and Black’’. The schedule consisted of ten games with some of the best school teams in Massachusetts. Cambridge Latin lost six games, tied two and won two. The lettermen of the 1934 season are: Capain Werner Neudorf, John Gomez, Willard Mitchell, Lester Pitchford, Paul Mahoney, Frank Harney, Frank O’Brien, Captain-Elect Frank Coady, Morgan O’Connell, Donald Regnier, Bronislavas Romonas, Francis Glacken, Ernest Saulnier, George Nichols, Cornelius Sullivan, Charles Dorman, Richard Casey, Joseph Stan- kunas, Albert D’Entremont, Joseph McKeever, Albert Doyle, James Healy, Emilio Gargano, and Parker Murphy. 126 HOCKEY TEAM Back Row: Mr. G. Foley, C. Carey, J. Boudreau, A. St. Martin, J. Sullivan, J. Fennell (Manager). Front Row: E. Martin, J. Fitzgerald, A. Boudreau, J. Gomes (Captain), R. Chaisson, M. Buckley, W. Boudreau. HOCKEY The Boston Garden was the scene of many exciting hockey games dur- ing the winter of 1934 - 1935. In the comparatively warm garden the spec- tators saw eight teams of the Interscholastic League battle among them- selves each Saturday for the championship. Naturally, the object of the 1935 hockey team was to win out. To or- dinary spectators, the Cambridge team appeared to lack both experience and smoothness, but it won from teams that were rated much higher. The fact that Latin won so many games was due to the excellent instruction of Coach Culhane and to the superb execution of Ray Chaisson and the three Boudreau brothers. The schedule of the season consisted of fourteen games. Each team of the League played every other team twice. Of the fourteen games played Latin won 6, tied 2, and lost 6. This record shows that the team accom- plished much more than was expected of it. For the first time in many years the team elected co-captains. The two boys elected to lead Latin’s ice team were Ray Chaisson and Al Bou- dreau. The lettermen of the 1934 - 35 hockey season are: Al Boudreau, Jim Boudreau, Walter Boudreau, Ray Chaisson, Al St. Martin, Edward Mar- tin, John Gomez, Captain, John Sullivan, James Fitzgerald, and James Buckley. 127 BASKETBALL TEAM Back Row: P. Frisoli (Manager), G. Lovett, F. Glacken, G. Dorman, Mr. G. Foley, P. Mahoney, B. Romonas, H. Zelino, 8. Dydzalis. Middle Row: J. McCarthy, J. Manke, P. Gallagher, M. Kishkis (Captain), John Munn, J. Simpson, M. Brown, F. Coady. Front Row: E. Davis, J. Welch, F. West, B. Paglerani, S. Thorpe. BASKETBALL Coach Koslowsky faced a tremendous task in turning out a finished basketball team from the inexperienced men who reported to him. Of the hundred and fifty candidates who appeared at the first practice session, about twenty-five mediocre players and six skilled ones were found. _ The home games were played at Saint Mary’s gymnasium before capa- city crowds. The Cambridge team did not disappoint the loyal rooters, but furnished them many exciting and pleasant hours. Many of the games which Cambridge Latin played were won and lost by a few points from some of the best teams in Massachusetts. To those who remain to play next year we do not need to wish success because we are confident that the long coveted participation in the Tech Tournament will be realized. The basketball lettermen are as follows: Mel Brown, Francis Coady, Pasquale Frisoli, manager, Phil Gallagher, Mike Kishkis, Paul Mahoney, 2 oe Manke, John McCarthy, John Munn, Bronislavas Romonas and John Simpson. 128 BASEBALL TEAM Back Row: J. Hayes (Mgr.), J. Fennell (Mgr.), E. Waitkins, G. Kelley, E. Mulhern, J. Madden, J. Lawrence, J. Davidson. Middle Row: Mr. G. Foley, P. Murphy, G. Stansbury, J. Shaughnessy, J. Kelley, J. Moore, P. Courtney, G. Lovett, Mr. MacDonald (Coach). Front Row: C. Kardulos, J. Manke, J. Doherty, L. Pitchford (Co-Capt.), J. Gnerre, (Co-Capt.), E. Martin, R. McIntyre, A. Boudreau. BASEBALL Among the hundred candidates who reported for baseball were many veterans and stars of last year’s team. The heavy hitters of the team were Mitchell, Gnerre and Pitchford. The other members of the team, although not very consistent at the bat, were effective in pinches. The outstanding pitchers in the early games of the season were Vic Fratto, Art Boudreau and John Clark. Behind the bat Latin had Eddie Martin, whose playing was superb and added the much needed punch to the team. As its predecessors have done at Latin school, the 1935 team made a good showing, and the games that were won, were won through the effect- ive pitching and hitting of the team. There were no “flukes’’. The members of the squad are: Mitchell, Boudreau, Fratto, Clark, Mulhern, Pitchford, Manke, Murphy, McCarthy, McIntyre, Gnerre, Stans- bury, Doherty, Mahoney and Corcoran. The games played up to the time this book went to press are as follows: C.H. L. S. —6 Commerce — 5 C.H.L.S.—8 Revere — CG, H: 8: —2 Newton —11 Cini Malden —15 C.H.L. 8S. — 3 Arlington — 4 C. Middle Row: Richard Ruggles, Frank Boring, Harry Olken, Meyer Chait, Thomas Burns, Theodore Pappadopoulos. Front Row: Helen Hanson, C. M. Bliss, Idabelle Carrington. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club with twenty-five members was quite active during the year. Eighteen took part in the fall tournament, which was won by Frank Boring. A ladder of players in order of strength was then started with the right of challenging for position the person next above one, not oftener than once in two weeks. The Club met and these games were played, every Friday after school in Mr. Bliss’s Office. School matches were played with Rindge, Somerville, Roxbury Memo- rial High, Brookline and Boston Latin School. High and Latin won from Somerville, two out of three from Rindge, and one match out of two from Roxbury, losing to Boston Latin, and Brookline High. 130 CAMBRIDGE FAiGH ann LATIN SCHOOL TRACK Track, a minor sport, had been one of the most difficult in which to earn a letter. At a recent meeting of the school committee, it was decided to award a letter to any track man winning one point in competition ; where- as, previously, six points were required to earn a letter. This change ap- pealed to many boys, and attracted many new candidates. The track team was under the supervision of John Murphy, a former athlete of. Latin school. The members of the track team were as follows: Sullivan, Welch, Doyle, Bernard, Byrnes, Higgins, Richard Babish, Robert Babish, Barnes, P. Glynn, Gould, McClellan, McNally, Regnier, Sparanges and Stokes. TENNIS AND GOLF Two new teams represent C. H. L. S. in the realm of sport this spring — tennis and golf. The latter, captained by Frank Duddy and Frank Harney, is not yet ready to play matches, and due to some delay in sanction, probably will not be until fall. The former, however, with a team made up of Bruce Wilkins, Harold Johnson, James Longino, ‘and Frank Duddy, has played two matches, and there are more in prospect. The Watertown match resulted in a 5 - 1 defeat. The team also par- ticipated in the state tournament at Longwood on May 18. Although of the present team three graduate this year, we feel that next year will see big- ger and better things in tennis. It is also our hope that golf will prosper. 131] GIRLS’ ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION OFFICERS Back Row: Madelyn Sullivan, Bessie Makris, Elizabeth Harney, Phyllis Sheridan. Front Row: Edith Coady, Secretary; Margaret Murphy, President; Frances Ritvo, Vice President and Treasurer. GALA. The Girls’ Athletic Association, is an organization for girls who enjoy athletics. Thanks to the efforts of efficient officers, this past year has been both pleasant and successful. In the absence of Miss Brown, who, because of illness, missed much of the year, Miss McLaughlin and Miss George did yeoman work in making such success possible. They filled the gap admira- bly. The opening event of the school year was the doubles tennis tourna- ment, won by Lindsay Britt and Barbara Fox. Next was the Freshman Initiation. After this some of the upperclassmen entertained the new mem- bers. At Thanksgiving there was the usual distribution of food and cloth- ing. Santa Claus, entertainment and dancing were featured at the Christ- mas party. The Girl Dance and the Boy Dance were very successful. The latter was held on January 24; Tay O’Donnell’s orchestra furnished the music. In April came the annual Masquerade. All who attended had a good time. Last, but far from least, was the picnic. We wish to take this opportunity to express our hopes that next year’s seniors will have Miss Brown back, well, and full of the enthusiasm which has always been of such value to the G. A. A. 132 SENIOR CLASS BASKETBALL TEAM Left to Right: Margaret Murphy, Jean Branscombe, Mary Allt, Mary Albro, Olga Culolias, Marion Zappala, Margaret Powell, Captain. SENIOR BASKETBALL TEAM The senior basketball team did not have so good a season this year as it has had formerly. Nevertheless, every player did her best. PHI CLUB The Phi Club is an organization of seniors who have elected to pursue their high school studies at the High School Annex. The club, though or- ganized on the fraternity model, has taken pains to eliminate the artificial exclusiveness of a fraternity, and consistent with its position in a public high school has opened its membership roll to any senior who cared to join. The result is a group of students with various interests, though this year there was pronounced athletic tinge to its membership. The roll includes such athletes as: John Gomez, Edward J. Martin, Thomas Thorpe, James Fitzgerald, F. Mullen, Patrick Murphy, Joseph Stankunas and Alexander Belusho. The extra curricula activities of the Annex are usually managed by the Phi Club. This year, in addition to managing the routine entertain- ment of the Annex, the Phi Club sponsored a very successful ahletic night. The club social activities will close with its usual dinner dance in gradua- tion week. Officers for 1935 were: GEORGE MEEHAN, President. PATRICK MURPHY, Vice-President JOSEPH SULLIVAN, Secretary and Treasurer. JOSEPH STANKUNAS, Chairman. 136 KLAWHOWJAHA BJUSTOFF Back Row: Muriel Dale, Frances Farmer, Madeline Emerson, Marie O’Leary, Henrietta Bourque. Middle Row: Ruth Maurer, Corinne Crowley, Dorothy Dube, Lindsay Britt, Ruth Zirsch, Ada Bradbury, Katherine Kilfoyle, Mary Reall. Front Row: Helen Flanders, Alice Peppard, Julia Peers, Treas., Ruth Anne Beetham, Pres., Dorothy Cummings, Sec., Rita Navarro, Virginia Hoagland. THE KLOWHOWJAH BJUSTOFF CLUB Under the expert guidance of Miss McElroy and Miss Murray, the K. B. Club has this year made a success both socially and financially. Ten members were admitted to the club at the reception held at Corinne Crow- ley’s home in November. At the second reception, which was at Dorothy Dube’s home, in March, seven members were admitted . The annual dance which was held at Cantabrigia Club, was, as usual, an outstanding success. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, the members of the club contributed food which was distributed to several needy families recommended by the School Nurse. With the money made at the dance and from the selling of candy at the Senior Drama, the club is giving a scholarship to a senior girl who wishes to continue her education. 137 FRENCH CLUB Back Row: Maria Karkanedes, David Humez, Cornelia de Roode, Alice Ryan. Front Row: Gertrude Houser, Nicholas Helburn, Harry Johnson, Louise Portais, Ethel Pollack. THE FRENCH CLUB The French Club, composed of thirty-five students of third year and second year honor French, under the able leadership of Miss Henrietta Mc- Intire and the other teachers of the French department, was organized in October, 1934. The following officers were elected: President, Harry Johnson; First Vice-President, Nicholas Helburn; Second Vice-President, Louise Portais; Secretary, Gertrude Houser; Assistant Secretary, Frances Ryan; Treasurer, Maria Karkenedes; Assistant Treasurer; Cornelia De Roode; Program Committee, Ethel Pollack; Chairman, Beatrice Fish- man, Virginia Hoagland and Paul Moylan; Chairman of the Music Com- mittee, David Humez. Among the outstanding events of the year were the Christmas party and play, the presentation of “‘La Surprise d’Isidore’’, ““Le Voyage de Mon- sieur Perrichon’’, the teas at the homes of two members, the lecture by Mr. Cecil Derry on the derivation of the romance languages from the Latin, and the talk on Brittany given by Mr. Wallace Fowlie of Harvard University. Many of the members have had interesting correspondence with girls and boys in France. Although many of the officers and members will not attend Cambridge High and Latin School next year, we hope that the French Club will con- tinue to flourish under the able supervision of Miss McIntire. 138 diving ITALIAN CLUB Back Row: Elvira Fabrizio, Mamie Bonanno, Armand Venezia, Angelina Aufiero, Mary Ezzo. Front Row: Joseph Scotti, Leo Egidio, Lucy Bonacci. THE ITALIAN CLUB An Italian Club has been formed this year for the first time in this school. The club has been enthusiastically supported by the pupils who are either taking Italian or who can speak and read it. We hope that other Italian pupils will keep this club alive. The officers are: President, Leo Egidio; Vice-President, Joseph Scot- ti; Secretary, Lucy Bonacci; Assistant Secretary, Angelina Aufiero; Treas- urer, Alvira Fabrizio; Assistant Treasurer, Armando Venezia; Head of Program Committee, Mamie Bonanno, Mary Ezzo; Head of Music Com- mittee, James Gnerre, Dolores Latenza. This recently formed Italian Club had as a guest speaker at its second meeting, on April 26, Lucio Gatto, C. H. L.S. 1930, anda member of the first Italian class in this school. A graduate of Harvard in 1934, he is now in his first year at Harvard Medical School. His subject was “The Value of Studying Italian.” A large number of pupils taking Italian and teachers of Italian listened with keen interest to his story of Italy’s history and her contribution to the science, literature, music and art of the world. He spoke of the practical as well as the cultural values to himself and to all those who, through the study of the language, could enter her treasure-house. There was an interesting program offered on May 22. The name of the play presented was — “Acqua O Carbone’’. The cast: Ercole, Leo Egidio; Rosetta, Lucy Bonacci; and Laquille, Frank Manganelli. The club as a whole wishes to thank Miss McIntire for her whole- hearted cooperation in making this club a success. Lucy BONACCI 139° DEBATING CLUB Standing: Jacob Kaplan. Paul Burke, Edward Waitkus. Sitting: Mary Buckley, John Madden. DURRELL DEBATING SOCIETY Through the efforts of Mr. Cleveland, the Metropolitan Debating League was organized with a membership of nine local high schools. A constitution was drafted and approved, together with a league question “Federal Aid to Education’, and thus the league was able to get into opera- tion. We debated Medford, Somerville and Lynn Classical. In all instances Latin inflicted crushing defeats thus assuming the league leadership. The debaters who amassed this fine record are, Herman Sanderson, Roland Shaine, Mary Buckley, John Madden, Edward Waitkus and Jacob Kaplan. Madden and Sanderson deserve great praise for their fine rebuttalling. Our debating season was brought to a climax by the annual Durrell Prize Debate. The victors were awarded medals and earned the right to have their names inscribed on the Durrell Silver Loving Cup which rests in the trophy cabinet. The winners were John Madden, Paul Burke and Edward Waitkus. The Debating Club feels most grateful to both Mr. Cleveland and Miss Breau, our moderator, for the time and effort they have expended in making possible this, our most successful debating season. Especially to Mr. Cleveland do we give our thanks for his thoughtfulness and kindness in organizing the league and in furthering the interests of the society, and we join the rest of the school in offering our congratulations to him on the completion of twenty-five years as Head Master of the school. Respectfully, JACOB KAPLAN. 140 Ss ae REVIEW STAFF Top Row: George Doherty, Arthur Sugarman, Donald Regan, James Barnes, Herbert Rooney. Second Row: Joseph Manley, Marguerite Cox. THE REVIEW The measure of success which The Review has attained is due to the assistance of its contributors. We have had a good year because of the helpful attitude of the staff toward all new projects; however, through still closer co-operation we can achieve finer and greater things. We conducted a Short Story Contest in order to arouse interest in The Review by means of competition. The response might have been greater in volume, yet the stories which were received were of an unusually high order. The Review is a member of The Columbia Scholastic Press Association. This year we received a charter from the Quill and Scroll Honorary Soci- ety. Into this Society we shall initiate those students of honor grade whose work is accepted for publication in the Review. We express our thanks to the staff for their untiring efforts, to all our student contributors, to our many subscribers, and to our advertisers, who have helped make our paper financially independent. It is our hope for the future that students may come to look upon The Review as a voice through which they may express their thoughts, ideals, and objectives. The value of our school magazine depends upon the spirit which our students bring to it. We have received much complimentary at- tention from the Exchange editors of the papers to whom we send The Re- view. We have long recognized the fact that we have an excellent school paper. There is none better. The prospect for the future looks bright at the close of this school year! 14] SENIOR ID IIR As thr Ay, RCLOK. BERKELEY SQUARE The class of 1935 in its presentation of “Berkeley Square’, under the able direction of Miss Hartigan, has added another brilliant page to Senior Drama history. Peter Standish, a young American architect, has inherited an old English house built by one of his ancestors. In love with the past this modern young man steps from the twentieth to the eighteenth century and takes up the life led by his ancestor. Peter is still essentially himself but he plays the game as well as he can. He is charmed and shocked by much that he sees, and in turn he dazzles and amazes his eighteenth cen- tury friends by what he says and does for his knowledge of the future at times betrays him. He returns to his own time, bringing with him from the past nothing but the memory of a girl whom he loved and who died more than a hun- dred years before Peter Standish was born. The part of Peter Standish was played by Charles McFarland who captured to a marked degree the wit, the charm, the delicate romance and phantasy of his role. Tom Pettigrew, a typical youth of his time, lived for us as he was acted by Saul Fram. Ruth Zirsch fave an interesting and effective characterization of Kate Pettigrew, while Catherine Donohue was a charming contrast as the more sensitive Helen. The domineering and worldly Lady Anne was competently portrayed by Ruth Burns. Mr. Throstle, played by Meyer Chait, was assuredly, as Peter says of him, “a typical gentleman of his time’”’. Wilkins, the maid, was made a personality by the acting of Anne Jenkins. . Frank Duddy made a fine Ambassador with just the right air of suave maturity. Mrs. Barwick was lifted above the part of just “the housekeeper” by Dorothy Toomey, who gave her real qualities of dignity and capability. The modern girl, Marjorie Frant, was sincerely characterized by Bar- bara Hamilton. Herbert Rooney, as Major Clinton, Edward Rogers as Lord Stonely, Dorothy Cumming’s as the Duchess of Devonshire, and Helen Mack as Miss Barrymore, gave us nice character portrayals. The Duke of Cumberland, ably acted by Sumner Levy, afforded much amusement with his eccentricities of character and appearance. Once more the graduating class of C. H. L. S. may feel confident that its Senior Drama cast and Miss Hartigan have accomplished something of which it may be very proud. 142 oe = Be Sone , — SENIOR DRAMA CAST Back Row: Herbert Rooney, Sumner Levy, Dorothy Toomey, Myer Chait, Barbara Hamilton, Edward Rogers, Frank Duddy. G.’s, cross-word puzzles, to be purchased with all pennies found in the lunch rooms, aided by excess funds in the treasury. To the incoming Freshmen, school guide books, to be printed by friends at Rindge, with material furnished by the Welfare department. To enthusiastic hockey fans, one pair box-toe shoes, one pair shin- guards, one pair football shoulder pads, one noseguard, one trench helmet, and one volume “Mob Psychology and How to Avoid It’; for use on the subway, coming from and going to hockey games at the Garden. To all classes following, our French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Latin books. We believe that most of the translations have been written in. To next year’s senior dramatists, all crackers, sandwiches, and crusts left from the lunchroom, and one dozen spring mattresses, for use at re- hearsals; to be financed by house to house canvassing. To those whose excuse list is exhausted, a catalogue of all those found successful in former years. To any Freshman musically inclined, the old bass drum and kettle- drum in Miss Waite’s closet. To the class of ’37, reserved blank spaces on our desks, in which you can engrave your names, as so many others have. To the school at large, clocks that keep reasonable time. To the lower classes, the library grounds to romp on, newly seeded and raked. To the school politicians, who wax more enthusiastic each succeeding year, one half dozen assorted soap boxes, one half dozen assorted tree stumps, and the Classical Library for rallies. 144 CAMBRIDGE Firénh AND LATIN SCHOOL To those who aspire to success in business, the school’s old typewriters. To Mr. Garrett Foley, disappearance-proof uniforms. To Mr. MacDonald, a box of rubber cigars. And, to the class of ’39, enough theme paper for all to write the life of William Wrigley (A. A. H.) As according to Article 134, paragraph 6, clause ili, this last will and testament is valid in the eyes of the law. May it be executed by one Edward J. Danehy, with resulting happiness for those concerned. May we, the dying body, in the last gasp, wish you, our beneficiaries, success in everything! THE CLASS OF 1935. Witness: DOROTHY CUMMINGS 145 Cambridge is in a state of hub-bub to celebrate the reunion of the class of 1935! The meeting place of the old grads is at the C. H. L. 8. Grand Hotel, owned by Bill Skelley and Frank Harney. A great banquet and dance is to be held. We shall dance to the lilting tunes of Paul Moriarty and his “Scintillating Syncopators”. The entertainers are Anne Jenkins and Saul Fram, that famous singing couple. The advertising of this great event has been in charge of Ernest Fin- stein and his partner, Arthur Sugarman. The tickets were taken care of by Dick Cox, who sold us so many tickets years ago. On the 15th floor of this hotel there is a radio station, where many of the graduates will speak to the radio audience. Eddy Rogers, that popular and handsome radio luminary, is acting as master of ceremonies. The entertainment committee is composed of Hen- rietta Bourque, Alice Smith, Alice Peppard and Jean Branscombe. Roland Denault in a brief speech announces his intention of running for re-election as City Treasurer. His publicity agent, Joe Groden, is con- fident of a sweeping victory. Johnny Kelley, sporting editor, takes his turn at the pike to give some information about our athletes. Bo O’Brien and Man Mountain Casey will wrestle for the heavy weight championship in New York. Paul Mahoney is now a veteran backfield star for the Boston Redskins, while much is ex- pected of Al Doyle, a southpaw passer. Mike Kishkis is this year’s captain. “Dusty” Gomez was recently purchased by the New York Americans as their goal tender. Ed Mulhern, authority on baseball, states that Jimmy Gnerre and Dick McIntyre are playing side by side for the Red Sox. Alec Graham has been purchased by the Pittsburg Pirates, and Leo Davy has published a book en- titled “Correct Form Used in Pitching’. The income was so great that Leo had need for two secretaries; Mary Madden and Edith Ocklis, acting in this capacity. Bruno Romanos is daily training with Henry Janul for his next bout. However, a number is about to go on the air; it is Amy Brown, ac- companied by Elvira Madeiros, singing by request, ““Home on the Range’. Here is something sensational! A girls’ orchestra by Kay Kilfoyle, and having Virginia Hoagland at the piano as one of its many features, is 146 CAMBRIDGE FireéoH AND LATIN SCHOOL playing nightly at Ernie Saulnier’s famous “Club Rendezvous”. Les Pitch- ford has complete charge of all entertainment and announces a trio com- posed of Marge Eric kson, Sally Donovan and Jo Lucas as one of the out- standing numbers. George Thompson and George O’Brien have written a song entitled, “Life is a Dream’, which is daily increasing in popularity, due to the fine rendition of it by Ada Bradbury over the air waves. C. H. L. S. has two representatives in Hollywood; Ruth Zirsch’s stellar acting is receiving the plaudits of all the critics; Janet Gaynor’s protege, Kay Donahue, has recently been made a Wampus Baby Star. Pat Courtney, that dashing young reporter, has just dropped in to inform us that Bernard Barber is editor of the ‘‘Boston Herald’, while James Robertson daily writes criticisms of current books and dramas. Fa- vorable comments were given to Harry Johnson’s “Shakespearean Plays” and Frank Duddy’s “The Mystery of the Horrible Goon”. Edward Moylan is now a famous correspondent covering political news at Washington. Art Desrosiers and Stewy Fairburn hold the joint ownership of a great American Airline, and they are aided greatly by Messrs. Sanderson, Bar- nard and Perkins, who are officials of the line. Need we say that business is progressing steadily with such charming air hostesses as Rita Quinlan, Mary Murray and Edith Ordham. Because of many requests “Berkeley Square’ will be presented on Broadway with Charlie McFarland, who has attained tremendous success on the stage, as leading man. Other members of the cast include Dorothy Toomey, Barbara Hamilton, Dorothy Sullivan, Sumner Levy and Ruth Burns. Thus Charlie is supported by an excellent cast. Henry Baker, who is now the Cambridge Rambler, rushes in to state that Larry Roper has been engaged to sing on George La Bar’s radio hour, and Priscilla Johnson has been slated to read some of her beautiful poems. Mr. Roper’s number will be, “I Love Life’. We also learn that Werner Neudorf and Charlie Joseph are friendly rivals in a political contest. In a recent contest to determine the girl with the most personality, a tie vote resulted, with Cora Grey and Julia Peers as winners. The contest was sponsored by Fred Molloy. Prominent judges were Lilian Barenberg, Charles Michaud, Lucille Foley and Robert Eisenhauer. At this moment, Beatrice Fishman, who is dean at Radcliffe, enters and informs us that George Potter is now principal of a secondary school, while Gertrude Houser is continuing her studies in France. While overhearing a conversation between Alma La France and Pearl Kamins, we learn that Ruth Eastman and Madeline Sullivan have opened a group of beauty parlors. Grace Bohmuellar has charge of the New York chain, and Hazel Pomeroy has charge of the Chicago chain. Mary Reall and Virginia Atchison, because of their terpsichorean ability, have become famous on the great White Way of Broadway. Flora Harris, Sadie Cahill and Lucille Stratton are prominent mem- bers of a famous ladies’ club. The hour is very late; the big affair is ended. On the way home we meet Myer Chait and Michael Noonan, master of ceremonies and orchestra leader respectively, of a Boston night club. The great evening is over, and I return home to dream of future meet- ings with my classmates. HERBERT ROONEY, ’35. 147 Epilogue- During our years at C. H. L. S. a rapid and complete change has taken place; we have progressed from a state of mental and physical childhood to advanced adolescence. Lifelong friendships have been formed; book knowledge has been acquired; and an eye to the future has been developed. All we lack, now, for success in life, is that which no one can help us again — experience. Perhaps it is just as well, for we are young and confident, while our worldly wise elders are sad and disillusioned. Our parting hope is that as we grow in experience, life will take on a new meaning fior us — as a beautiful and colorful drama enacted for the benefit of the Eternal. 148 Waid Class Photographer for C.
