A L ATIN SCHOOL DL A N AMBRIDGE HIGH C flleclication., We, the Senior Class of 1942 respectfully dedicate our Year Book to TIMOTHY F. DOWNEY His kindly guidance as Freshman Master will always be one ofthe most pleasant memories of our four years at C. H. L. S. We extend him our best wishes for a long and happy tenure as Head Master. TIMOTHY F. DOWNEY Headmaster fllrologuez I have had my playmates, I have had my companions, In my days of childhood, in my joyful school days. All. all are gone, the old familiar faces. In the inevitable separation, our friendships and associations will grow dim. Here through the medium of the printed page. we relive the memory of our youth. It will ever open the door for a journey of sentiment through the past. The door is openg turn the page. W. F. Dowling Jr. f 6 I CAMBIQIDIBE HIGH 8: LATIN SCHDOL MR. THOMAS LONG BRAMHALI. We were an exceptionally large class, so we were told, of nearly a thousand specimens of thoroughly scared, gaping adolescence. But after the first few frightening weeks, we realized that we had .suddenly become definitely aged and experinced Freshmen, that the limitless corridors were no longer a winding maze to us, and that C. H. I.. S. wasn't so monstrous, after all! We considered OURS a distinctive class that year. We had been the only freshmen class at this school ever to experience that freak of nature, the hurricaneg we were the First freshman class ever to begin school at 1:00 in the afternoon and to finish at the exhausting hour of 4:00. VVhile the old English Building was being torn down o.utside our windows, we recited Latin declensions, algebraic equations, and other such mystifying subjects. Oh, how those drills grated on our nerves during the endless afternoons as we shouted 11271 CAMBRIDGE HIGH 8: LATIN SCHOUI. above the roar! The only co.nsolation we could see was that we should inevitably attend the promised school. Although the disadvantage of the two sessions prevented any intimacies with the upper classmen, we discovered that we could find time to dash into the meet- ings of the Dramatic Club, G. A. A., and jitter-bug sessions o.n the piano in the old hall before the bell rang at noon. The girls realized the fun of the Boy-Girl dances in the gym, the aspiration of the G. A. A. Formal of the coming year, and the absolute f'sophistication with which make-up furnished us. The boys discovered that many lengthy conservations could be completed during those pro- longed trips to the gym at Rindge, and that the jive and bright socks were thie thing. And so our memorable freshman year passed on, filled with Talent Nights, Caroling at Christmas, dances, football games, Saturday at the hockey games, and lhovering departmentals and terms tests with their never-ending torments. Finally, we found the doors opening to a new world: we were Sophomores! Oh VVise foolsl' that we were, not so wise as foolish, we waited only for the days when we might be upper classmen. How could we know that English Lit would present itself in even greater quantities than in this sophomore year? How could we realize that Skipper'5 Latin would be more of a struggle even than Caesar? To offset these grievances, came the long-hoped for G. A. A. Fo.rmal, over which many of us spent hours of torturing forethought, and after which several imaginative souls wrote themes with a thought to the ridiculous. We found that this year we were the fortunates-no more afternoon sessions for us-we were finished at 12.30. And did we sympathize with the Freshmen tramping in as we Hoated out! This year, instead of the Mold being torn down, the new building was shooting up with startling speed, the time, too, shot by with amazing velocity. But before the year had gone too far, the beloved Master of sophomore boys, Mr. Bliss, passed away. This was a shock to the Whole school, both teachers and pupils, Mr. Bliss had been at the school for so many years and everyone had such a deep affection for him that it was hard to. realize that we should see him no more. Despite this shock, however, the year Hew by and before we knew it, we were juniors. We returned from vacation to End the new building completed, lockers to wrestle with, and walls not to spot. ln that year of '40-'41, we found out what work really is: instead of descriptive English themes, we dis- covered that we were expected to. have deep thoughts on subjects like Clouds or Trifles. Sight translations in Latin pounced on us with no warning, and reams of typewriter paper piled up on desks. All in all, we were immersed in homework with which most of us spent the majority of our now valuable time evaluable because now the days sped by and time was all too scanty. Even the piano sessions in the old hall became fewer and far between. Then one eventful day we began to see resplendant posters, drawn by our con- temporaries, tacked on every wall, in every corridor, and in every conceivable nook-posters which proclaimed the virtues of a possible junior president, treas- urer, and secretary. When the campaign and voting were over, we saw that We 11281 CAMBRIDGE HIGH 8: LATIN SCHOOL had elected Paul O'Rourke as ptresident, Dutchie Gaynor as vice-president, Barbara Nauffts as secretary, and Stanley Hurak as treasurer. A week before the Junior Prom we discovered what a forceful and dynamic personality we had chosen as our p-resident. Paul O'Rourke gave a talk in the new hall on buy- ing tickets for the prom-a talk which truly made the dance the success that it was. And then strangely enough the year was over. A little sad, a little glad, we waited for the next year and knew with a terrible certainty that we should be seniors! Many changes occurred during the summer. However, life went on much the same at school. Elections came and were more heated than ever. Paul O'Rourke was again chosen as presidentg Barbara Nauffts as secre- tary, Dorothy Reardon as tireasurerg and Rocks Leary as vice-president. Elections over, it all started: pictures at Vantines, rings, caps and gowns, assemblies on Wednesday, senior questionaire, Review , year book, senior reception, and graduation. Supplementing these were term tests, compulsory seventh periods, scholastic aptitudes fno college boardsjg Senior Drama, The Late Christopher Beane , which was a huge success due to Madeline Birmingham, Peggy Ford, Mary Buckley, jane Hayes, Frank Curran, Bill Conlan, Frank DiGioia, Stanley Davin, and William Sullivan, and Dramatic Club Festival at Emerson College, which we won with the help of The Old Lady Shows Her Medals. Now as we find the year slipping from beneath us, we leave with regret and ill--concealed sorrow, the halls of Cambridge High and Latin School. We see ahead many years of tentative hardship and labor, but does it daunt us? Oh no! We feel certain that the training which we have received here supplemented by that which we shall receive either in college or in the business world will help to guide us through our long lives. To our deep regret, when we returned, we found that Mr. Cleveland, our principal for so many years, had resigned his position as headmaster, Mr. Dow- ney, fo.rmer Master of freshmen boys, received the appointment of Headmaster of the school. Another major change was the fact that England was at war with Germany! However etc. As seniors, now, we wish to thank profoundly Mr. Cleveland, our former Principal, Mr. Downey, our new Headmaster, our Deans and Masters, Miss Walsh for her recent patienceg and all our learned teachers for their guidance through these years at Cambridge High and Latin School. Ford SENIOR DRAMA NOTIES MARUA: BCCKLICY ln true Senior Drama tradition, the weather on the night of February 6th was stormy, but spirits were high, and the parents, friends and faculty of the Cambridge High and Latin School crowded the Leslie L. Cleveland Auditorium to witness the dramatic efforts of our senior class. The play was The Late Christopher Bean , by Sidney Howard, and the Class of l942 lovingly .dedicated its pesentation to its new Headmaster, Mr. Timothy F. Downey. SYNOPSIS A painter named Christopher Bean had died in a New England village, leav- ing only a few dusty canvasses to pay Ur. Haggett for his care and lodging. lt was a mild surprise to Dr. Haggett and his family when an old friend of Bean dropped in and paid Christopher'5 bill, and took away only a couple of pictures as mementos. lt was a bigger surprise when another friend of Bean arrived on a similar errandg and the biggest of all, when a great New York art critic came to pay his respects to the memory of the dead artist. lt was overwhelming when they learned that Christopher l3ean's daubs were worth a fortune-and how the family scurried to find them! In the scramble, one was found in the chicken houseg another had been used by a daughter of the house' as a background for one of her paintingsg and another, a portrait of Abbey, was found hanging in Abbey's room. 11321 DRAMA COMMITTEE Pierce, Fillias, Coughlin, Faulkner The scene was laid in the dining room of the Haggett's house, not far from lioston. Francis Curran portrayed Dr. Haggett wonderfully. Peggy Ford, our wittiest student, superbly-and hilariously-played Mrs. I-laggett. Madeline Birmingham. as the lovable, sympathetic Abbey, appealed to the emotions of the audience, and gave a sterling performance. Jane Hayes gave a splendid character performance as Ada, the spoiled daughter of the family. What is a play without romance? Marie Buckley and llill Conlan, midst blushes galore, were Susan Haggett, younger member of the family, and VVarren Creamer. young artist, respectively, With Abbey's aid, against the wishes of the lflaggett family, they eloped. llill Sullivan admirably played Mr. Davenport, art critic, complete even to his goatee. The villains, really dishonest art dealers, were skillfully enacted by Stanley Davin, as Tallant, and Frank DiGioia, as Rosen. Those who served on the Drama Committee, and who helped innneasurably to make it a Success, were: Doris Coughlin, Chairman, lilizabeth Faulkner, Constance Fillios, Dorothy Pierce, and William Smith. U lzveryone agreed that he was well rewarded for having ventured out into the stormy weather by the excellent performance. May we take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to Miss Hartigan, our Director, and her able assistants, Miss U'Keefe and Miss Canney. and to Mr. llramhall, without whose never-ending advice the drama would never have been so great a success as it was. 11331 CAMIQDIDGE HIGH 8: LATIN SCHUUI. Class 'Trophecy Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen: This is John Varasse at the Hotel Commander, Cambridge, Mass., where the class of 1942, Cambridge High and Latin School, is holding its Tenth Reunion. The whole nation has been eagerly awaiting this momentous event which brings together some of the nations out- standing personalities. I see now that Herman Medoff, campaign manager for Doctor Paul F. O'Rourke, Junior Senator from Massachusetts, has finally been successful in wrenching away a turkey drumstick from the Senator and has induced him to rise. I now turn you over to Senator 0'Rourke, who, as class president, will introduce the various people of the class. 'fLaaydees and Gentlemen, I am indeed honor-ed to be given the privilege of -Don't look so worried Mr. Gadsby, I do not intend to give you a political speech-the privilege of introducing so many famous people. Without further words, I shall begin the introductions. I will request that you refrain from applause, since Mr. Ed Culhane, manager of the Hotel, has informed me that this hall is not built to resist vibrations and furthermore that it has been con- demned by Charles Mallahan, city building inspector. Beside me sits the country's outstanding authority on music, Julian L. Moynahan, music critic of the New York Times, who recently declared that Francis Sullivan's 3rd Hibernian Sym- phony in double G. flat major, is the greatest composition ever written. Next to him I see Joe Bushee who has lately defeated, in a bruising bout, Sam Zadoor- ian for the Hyweight championship of the world. With him is Armand Neri, his manager and Ed Kilbashian, manag-er of the Madison Sq. Gardens, who is watching out for Joe's foot which has been operated on by Doctor George Footsie Guild, world specialist on the 3rd toe of the right foot. Joe hurt his foot by having it stamped on by Zadoorian, who was attempting to make Joe remove his foot from a half dollar thrown in the ring by playboy Mel Andelman, an appreciative spectator. Referee Bill Chase escaped with far less serious injuries in the mob riot which ensued, breaking only four ribs and fracturing his nose and left leg. Over in the corner I see a table of moviedom's outstanding stars: Madeline Birmingham, who has made popular Shakespearian plays on the screen, Eleanor Quinn, stand-in for Joan Davis, glamourous Katherine Patselelis, Phyllis Clarkin, talented dramatic actress, and that handsome lover of the day, Bill Oomph Boy Conlin. t At the same table with these, we must not forget Lorena Duquette, New York actress, and that famous model, Ruth Alex. Ruth, whose clothes are copied by women all over the world, was recently voted the best dressed woman in New York. Here, too we should mention Betty Sullivan, famous designer, who is responsible for many of Ruth's stylish clothes. Seated at the next table-Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen, but a very great man has just entered the banquet hall. May I greet Colonel Fred Johnson, the BIGGEST man in the U. S. Army. 11341 CAMBRIDGE HIGH 8: LATIN SCHOOL who has just flown from Tokio, where he is maintaining a severe and highly effective military governmen.t. With him are Admiral Laurence Miller, Com- mander of the Far East Fleet, Vice Admiral Warren johnson, Chief of Staff Frederick Panazer, and assistant cabin boy aboard the U. S. S. Bilewater, Aaron Krute. Gentlemen, your reception committee awaits you at the head table. Next are Elizabeth Morris, Chairman of the Mass. State Republican Committee, Patricia Dias, head of Cambridge League of Women Voters, and Sylvia Piltch. house minority leader from Nevada. I should like now, to introduce some of the leading figures in the sports world. james Cooke-spelled with an e, breaker of Jesse Uwens 100 yard dash record by 3.9 seconds, Coke barely beat out speedy john Stathopolous in this race. At the same table, from left to right, Arthur Shea, 8 times winner of the BAA marathon, Billy Hayes, 1950 Golden Gloves champ, Al Toscano, goalie of the New York Rangers, and Red Masher McSoreley, his teammate, who was voted the Lady Ring Trophy for the game's most gentlemanly player, john Gentile, speed airplane pilot, Normie Screwball Traynor, who won 42 games for the Yankees last year, and battling chief con- tender for Joe Louis' heavy weight crown, which has been defended by joe recently for the 291st time, joe Iron-muscles Gadsby. VVe must not leave out Margaret Ford, captain of the Women's National Basketball Team, and the star forward on the same team, Rhoda Cummings. Over in the shadow there, trying to look modest about it all is Marion Lyons, who has twice captured the Inter- national Women's Fancy Diving Trophy. With her I see janet Atkinson who has fmanaged to stop here on her skating tour, just in time for our reunion. Also. I cannot leave out Anne Sullivan and Alice Donovan, the inseparable pair, who have distinguished themselves in the field of tennis. And who could forget Mary ,Ellen Sullivan, that girl-about-town? I don't see Mary right at the moment, but she, no doubt, is in the lobby, smoking a cigarette. However, ask her, and she'll 'remark innocently, I didn't did it. jane Hayes, here tonight, too, has distinguished herself by her original proverbs-and I do mean original. Mary Russell that pretty blonde I see over in the corner, is I hear, married to an Iowa doctor. Another case of marital happiness is that of Barbara Stone, who has taken the trip from Cuba, with her husband, a Cuban millioniare, just to be with us tonight. Over at the left hand side of the hall sits the nucleus of the intelligence of America. Among the eminent authors, are Eppie Dowling and Mary Cotter, who have just completed, under joint authorship, The Evolution of Boogie Woogie. Charming Dorothy Shea has just Finished her latest thriller, Cemetery Ridge. Kathryn Ahern, seated next to Dorothy, has published her book of essays, Fads and Fancies. Present here tonight, too, are Associate Professor of Special Relations at M. 1. T., A. Kenneth O'Donaghue, Prof. Theodore Calianos. head of the Latin Department at Oshgosh University, Pueblo, N.M., Reverend Edward Edwards, professor of Theology at Harvard Theo- logical School, and Prof. Charles Daskalos, former Gaelic and Scandinavian interpreter from U. of S. C.--director of VVestern Union in Massachusetts. Mur- ray Rosenberg, has just ridden to the head table on his bicycle and handed me two telegrams, which I shall read: 11351 CAMBRIDGE I-IIE-l'l 8: LATIN SCHDOI. Regret that I shall be late for reunion stop. So.me minor difficulty over my 310,000,000 deal with the Rodriques Finger Bowl Company and the Jenkins Broken Toe Insurance Co. stop. Am confident that my lawyer, William Smith, will outsmart judge john Stokes, whom Rodriques hired to judge the hearing stop. Signed-Thomas Rocks Leary. Also I should say here that I received a telephone call from Frank Curran this afternoon. He found it impossible to attend the reunion, as he is acting tonight in a play by Florence Cobb, The Man Who Cooked the Brunch co- starring himself and Marie Buckley, who plays the part of a South American chorus girl. Absent tonight, too, are Dorothy Corcoran, Barbara Nauffts, and Anne Conway. These girls are now in the sunny clime of Florida, competing with beauties from all over the country for the title of Miss America. Good luck, girls! judging this contest is Hugh Bartley, who. has been a judge of 154 beauty contests down there in the past 8 years. 'AI have found a life, he says, that is ideal for my temperament. Down in the back of the hall, making all the racket with the firecrackers, is William Scannell, who is chief noise maker in the 52 Edition of I-Ielzapoppinf' At the next table, are some alumni from the school itself, john Sheehan, Head- master, who has just sent a bill to the school committee, which consists of Edmund Traknis, Anne Cahill, Doris Mahoney, Plmyllis Grenier, and Frances Young. fCamb. Women, especially the class of '42, go in for politics in a big wayj. Anyway, the bill asks for the appointment of William Sullivan for the Head of Dramatics in Cambridge, Miss Betty Doyle as Art Director, and Mary McDonnell as the head of the English Department. I wish to stop here to thank Miss Mary O'Neil for the 250 pound box of candy which she sent me from New York where she is busily engaged in directing the new Fanny Farmer stores all over the country. I have another telegram here which just arrived: 'Greetings from Western Idaho. I have just raised a bumper crop of potatoes of which I am sending you 20 tons stop. Vivian Stanley, my assistant, is an expert at irriga- 'tion stop. I have just discovered that rotation of crops gives one a balanced diet stop. Best VVishes-Signed-Eva Schifferf Now back to the introductions -Claire Hirshberg, a bacteriologist, at the first table from the platform, has just announced her latest discovery. Spring Fever, she says, is due to a bacteria carried around by the june Bug. Next to her is Doris Coughlin, a biology research worker. Don't be surprised if Doris should pull a cardavar out from under this table after her meal, and set to work cutting it up. That's all for now ladies and gentlemen. I'm hungry. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your kind attention. Donlt forget to vote for me in the next election. This is John Varrasse, speaking to you again. It is the sincere hope of the management that you have enjoyed yourselves here, and that the Hotel Com- mander may have the pleasure of your company at your twenty-Fifth reunion in 1967. 1136! B. NOTES Another year of bustling activity is coming to an end, but not to be forgotten. The 17th of October was the date of the formal initiation of nine juniors and twelve seniors. increasing the group to thirty-six members. From the first o.f the club year, it was decided that we should do more in the line of charityg thus we took up knitting, sewing, and the making of dressings for the Red Cross. These activities continued throughout the year. When Thanksgiving was just around the corner, the girls decided to bring in food and money to enable the club to give a basket to a needy family. Following Thanksgiving, each and every girl too.k an active part in getting ready for the annual Winter Formal, which, we are proud to say, was the most successful of all the dances given thus far by K. B. This year the girls turned toward swimming and bowling as means of recrea- tion, and a most successful 'Splash Party was held in the Harvard Pool. Again, as last ,year, the K. B. girls were joined by Dramatic Club girls in selling candy at the Senior Drama in order to swell the treasury of the Senior Class. Now with the future bringing a formal dance given for the club members and their escorts, and a party given by the juniors for the seniors at which the officers for next year are to be elected, we are getting ready to bid farewell to Miss McElroy and Miss Buckley, our advisors, who have guided us through a most interesting year, and our officers. Betty Morris, President, and Mary Faulkner, Secretary-Treasurer, who have given us a year full of work and play. All there is left to say now is that the K. B. of 1942 wishes the K. B. o-f future years as much joy and success as it had. f138l DEBATI NG CLUB OFFICERS Sullivan, Stokes, Green, Kaminsky THIC lJURRlCI.I. This record, however, can be charged to the inexperience of its players, as there were nine new-comers, out of a pos- sible ten, on the team. The players who impressed this writer as showing sparks of future improve- ment, and becoming good chess players were Howard Smolar, '45, james O'Brien, '45, Arnold Schutzberg, '45, Melvin Mahlowitz, '45, Robert Brown, '45, George Perutz, '43, Ernest Dhjendolet, '43, and Marvin Mahlowitz, '45, The -teams two entries in the G. B. T. C. L's. annual tournament at the Huntington School, on April 17, were Howard Smolar, '45 and James Atkins. Smolar won none and lost three in his group, while Atkins won two and lost one in his group. Neither of the two reached the finals however. OFFICERS Bark Row: Kelly, Miss Brown, Murphy Front Row: Webster, Cahill, Dias, Zacharchuk, Piltcli Gl RLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION With pleasant memories of the many happy hours spent in joyful activities, the G. A. A. season of 1942 comes to a close. Each and every officer is worthy of praise, particularly since this year's group was confront-ed by circumstances unheard of in G. A. A. history. Foremost of these difficulties was the request to refrain from all evening activities, but, undaunted, the officers attempted very successfully to fulfill their oath, and give happiness to alll' by undertaking sevenal new sports. Among these sports was golf, which was enthusiastically managed by Marjorie Kelley, champion and proud possessor of many medals. Executive officer june Becker, to our extreme regret, felt that duties at home required a great deal of her time, and resignedg we were indeed fortunate in gaining Marjorie Kelley to take june's place. Among the few evening activities was the G. A. A. Formal, which proved to be the most successful dance, financially as well as socially, ever conducted by the G. A. A. The highlight of the evening was the awarding of the traditional Beau of the Ball trophy to Charles Lynch. Vtfe have just been informed that, war conditions allowing, the annual Spring Informal will be held at the Com- mander Hotel on May 8. The Officers are working with redoubled energy to make this affair just as much of a fun fest as were the Freshmen and Christmas Parties. Wailkiiig hikes were conducted by Sylvia Piltch, who has been an executive officer for the past three years, and who will graduate with three other Senior officers, Anne Cahill, Olga Zacharchuk, and Patricia Dias. The spring bike hikes received the usual support o.f the upperclassmen as well as the younger members. who pedaled along singing and chatting in the friendly G. A. A. manner. The annual picnic at Kendall Green promises to be a very gay time and to bring to a close this happy season of good fun by the installation of next year's officers. In closing, I wish to express a deep appreciation to Miss lirown, whose friendly advice greatly aided the officers through many a difficult ex- perience. PATRICIA IDIAS f142 I C. H. L. S. Knitting Groups have produced hundreds of warm sweaters and mittens, Sewing Units h.ave made scores of attractive little dresses. Other sections have been devoting hours of their free time each week to making Surgical Dressings and to studying the intricacies of First Aid. Still others have been hard at work mastering the art of preparing food in Canteen quantities in anticipation of emergency needs. Artists among us have provided highly meritorious posters furthering the interest of Defense Stamp sales, Victory Book collectors, and Air Raid Precaution classes. lirom Arts and Crafts has come some charming metal work in the form of tlower con- tainers for hospital use. More than seven hundred students led by seventy-tive teachers have participated in these activities. All in all, the Cambridge High and Latin School Junior Red Cross Unit, under the able direction of Miss Alice A. Ward, has made a contribution of which we may well be proud. 11431 VARSITY BASKPITBALT. Kelly, Miss Brown, Manning, Warner, Putnavu, Ford, Riley, Botelho, Henry SENIOR BASKETBALL The Senior Basketball Team of 1942, expertly led by those friendly co- captains Geraldine Dinah Riley and Peg Ford, consisted of Dorothy Botelho, Doris Forte, Sylvia Piltch, Ruth Putnam, Marion Warner, and Sylvia Laurence. Although our team had one of its unluckiest years this season, losing to both Somerville and Waltham, the fine spirited group displayed great skill in the Alumnae game. This final game of the year is always eagerly awaited because it brings such hilarious and unexpected results. This year was not an exception fwe witnessed short Silly', Piltch guarding, or at least attempting to guard a graduate at least six feet tall! We also saw Dinah', Riley's sporting attempts to gain a free shot, not in the usual way, for this game is never played in the usual manner, but with a huge pair of white gloves which completely enveloped her hands and wrists, not to mention her elbows. The many merry highlights of the game were discussed in detail while the girls were enjoying the ice cream served by the G. A. A. officers, Faith Webster and Patricia Dias. The Seniors are duly proud of the fact that they can play each and every position on the Hoor as expertly as their own position. The interclass game was evidence of this. Guards played forwards, and forwards guards, but the Seniors emerged triumphant from the merry maze of mixed positions. Thus they become the owners of highly coveted silver basketballs donated by the G. A. A. and bear- ing the player's initial. This enthusiastic group of girls deserves praise for the line spirit of sports- manship they leave behind them, and the grand example they have set for next year's team. 11441 SWIMMING TEAM Left to right: Shea, Lyons, White, Messenger SWIMMING Swimming was ardently supported this year by a group of about thirty-tive girls. Although the size diminished, as the year progressed, for many girls patriotically joined Red Cross and other war-time classes, the spirit of fun increased! The Seniors were sadly outnumbered in the interclass meet, with the result that the Freshmen emerged triumphant from the watery depths of the Y pool. Regardless of this defeat, we are eagerly and hopefully anticipating a victory against Somerville. Mary White's diving, combined with the excellent swimming of Marion Lyons and Betty Sullivan, not to mention the many Fine swimmers of the other teams, should certainly aid us greatly in conquering our opponents. Bystanders witnessed weekly aquatic displays of diving by several enthusiastic Freshmen. Mary Messenger's hilarious attempts to perfect a jack-knife dive, and Pat Sheafs beautiful swan dives, were very inspiring to other less accom- plished members. With such promising ability among the Freshmen, and the Fine instruction of Mr. Perdyne, our future teams should enjoy many successful meets. May we sincerely wish next year's group as much fun as the 1942 Team enjoyed this past Winter. 11451 OUTING CLUB Top row, left to right: Ruggles, Rogers, Small, Creniens, Kurth Middle row, left to right: Nolan, Rose, Russell, McConnell, Dubupue, Sullivan, Bolger Front row, Ivft tn right: Armstrong, Toohey, Davis, Secretaryg Bolger, President: Chvany, Bannicr, Roth TENNIS Early this season, the Doubles Tennis Tournament opened with a large numberiof fine spirited contenders, all secretly desirous of becoming medal win- ners. Katherine Schneider and Jane Thorne proved themselves superior to the rest, and to the applause of the entire G. A. A. membership, five hundred strong, received their hard earned and well deserved medals. Tennis enthusiasts are now eagerly awaiting the singles which will be played this spring. Among the many new activities this year, were roller skating and golf. Champion Marjorie Kelley, G. A. A. officer, conducted golfing classes, with the aid of her own teacher. Many eager girls benefited from this instruction, and perhaps will prove themselves champions in next year's meets. Roller skating, under the leadership of two G. A. A. officers. Anne Cahill and Olga Zacharchuk, was an activity which resulted in many unexpected and hilarious events! The undignified positions of amateurs Anne, and Pat Dias, will long be recalled by the smooth skating G. A. A. members, who sailed by with shouts of laughter at the struggling officers. Even though this sport was not competitive, it certainly was entertaining. 11461 I . Horan, Darling, Cazzmas, Samuelson, Mgr. Bolduc, Toscano. FOOTBALL The football team had one of the most disastrous years in the history of the school. This was not due to the coaching staff or to the players, but to insuffi- cient reserve power and th.e many injuries which disrupted the team. Notable among the injuries were three broken ribs suffered by Captain-Elect Chuck Darling, and a broken arm by Dutchie Gaynor, regular end. Although beaten badly in some games, Latin gave the school something to rave about when after holding a highly touted Rindge team scoreless for three periods, they finally succumbed to a 6-0 victory. Much credit is due these boys: Captain Sammy Zadoorian, a fighting play-er and a great leader, Red Hughes and Ralph Fratto, two stellar guards, Joe Line- han and joe Bushee, who held down the tackle slotsg Booty Doolin, George Spartichino and jack Sheehan, th.ree boys who were always in the ball gameg Cut Coutoumas, who played practically every positiong Rocks Leary, a good quarterbackg Art Shea, Stan Brinkerhoff, and Maurie Martel, three fine blockersg Chick McManus, who picked up our yardage, and Bob MdSorley, who was hampered by a knee injury. Zadoorian, McManus, Gaynor, and Leary received mention on All Star teams. With the aid of Coach Sonny Foley and Captain Al Toscano, the boys seem to be headed for another crown. The pitch- ing staff, composed of Bill Reardon, jim Bloomquist and Johnnie Murphy is eager to go aided by Rocks Leary and George Sullivan. Captain Al Toscano is the iii-st string receiver. At first base is Sammy Capabiancog while Bob Heavern and Joe Agnetta make up one of the classiest high schoo.l keystone combinations in Greater Boston. Richie Ernest, veteran third socker, is again cavorting around the hot corner. The outfield is composed of veterans Sammy Zadoorian, Cut Coutoumas, Dutchie Gaynor, Maurie Martel and rookie Jim Feloney. Bill Maher, Dick Aylward, Sabatino and Ottiviona are utility men. Much credit is due Coach Jack Culhane, Co-Captains Rocks Leary and Bill Maher. These three put on the ice a team worthy of wearing the school's name. There were only three seniors in this year's lineup. Al Toscano played the goal, and was placed on the second All Scholastic Team. Co-Captains Maher and Bo-b McSorley manned the defense, the first line featured Bill Reardon and Co-Captain Leary on the wings, and Bob I-Ieavern at centre-ice. Reardon and Heavern were picked for the First and second All Scholastic Teams respectively. Fred Whouley, Jazz Curtin, Bob Leary, Mannix, Bob Boland were the outstanding re- serves. R. Ralph Fratto, the famous foot-baller played the other guard. joe Agnetta and Nil Olsen took care of the forward positions. Captain George Guild has been a letnerman for four years, and deserves much praise. 'These regulars and the following reserves received their letters: Mahoney, Murphy, Zadoorian and Donahue. The basketball quintet won eight of their lifteen games, which made it a fairly successful season. Guild, Fratto. Zadoor- ian and Donahue are graduating this year. TRACK This past year, the track team won considerable success. The relay team defeated all opponents in the Seaboard Carnival, the State and Andover Meets. Chase and McDavitt, Cooke and Pimensky formed the relay team. The indi- vidual stars were: Cooke, a good dash and 300 yard man, Pimensky and Co- Captain' Chase in the 600. Art Shea. long distance star, Leo Ho-llisian in the 1000, and Co-Captain McDavitt, who high jumped and ran the dashes. Dutchie Gaynor was the main contender in the shot-put.
