19 1 HIGH AND ILATIIN SCHOOL g Ei 25 l The school llbrary was started ln 1800 when the Clty Council gave books to the value of elght hundred dollars There was a State law at the tlme whuh allowed the CltV to draw an equal amount from the State Treasury this addxtlonal fund made the lxbrarv as large as any hlgh school llbrary ln the State The books were thoroughly catalogued by Professor Abbot then sub master of the school The collectlon was ln creased by the proceeds ot a serles of lectures dellvered by Professox Louls Agasslz For almost s1xtv years after 1800 the llbrary was en larged by an appropuatlon every year as well as by speclal glfts from 1nd1v1dual c1t17ens A new featule suggested by Professm Felton of Hary a1d who was a membel of the school comm1ttee at thls tlme was lntroduced lnto the course of study at thlq t1me Heretofore the works of Enghsh authors had not been Studled ln then entlrety the hlgh school puplls recelved no mole lnstructlon ln thls respect than was to be gamed from a collectlon of extracts The formal study of Engllsh authors has proved lmmensely beneficlal and has now become one of the most unportant features of the hlgh school currlculum It may be noted that the Cambrldge Hlgh School was probably the first 1n thls countly to adopt the course whxch IS now s0 promlnent 1n all hlgh schools The number of puplls ln 1801 was neally two hundred an almost phenomenal lncrease for so short a perlod In all probablllty the c1t1zens of Old Cambrldge were beglnnmg to look upon the Hlgh School more and mole klndlv, and were therefore dlscaldlng then prlvate schools 1n favor of the school for the whole c1ty To make room for the Enghsh Lltexature, Latm and French had been d1'opped from the Engllsh Course 1n 1851, but 1n 1852 Flench, three years of It thls tlme, was agaln mcluded ln the currlculum Anothe1 radlcal change was made ln the Enghsh Course when It was lengthened to four vears to allow for tour years of Latln At the same txme Greek was added to the Classlcal Course, makmg lt extend 0181 hve years French was also added to this course, but xt was soon dropped llll ! ti Ei..,-.,....... - Q z I . l E L - .l . , , ,, ,,.,.,., ,,,,.. , t...
