HARVARD UNIVFRSITY FACULTX or Amw AND DFIENKF 10 l NH!-RSITY HAI: Max 14 1923 My dear Mr Rutledge When I was xn what IS now the Cambrldge High and Latm School It was called the Cambridge Hlgh School and lt occupxed the buxldlng at the corner of Broadway and Fayette Street It comblned as It does now wlth the work of an Engllsh hlgh school the work of a Lat1n school for be sldes the headmaster It had a Hopkms classlcal teacher Mr Wllllam F Bradbury who later was the master of the Lat1n School fol many years To Mr Bradbury the boys of my tlme owed much He was one of the best drlll masters that I have ever known and hls treatment of the first class was extraordlnarlly llberal How we could haxe wlthout loss ln the dxscl plme of the school such prlvlleges as he gaxe us I haxe nex 61 been qulte able to see In those days the school had no partlcular reputatlon for athletlcs The boys played football at recess 1n the lot at the opposlte torner of Fay ette Street but except for a game or two with the Somervllle Hlgh School they had so fal as I can remember no lnterscholastlc competltlon I football pxactlcally all the boys could take part at the same tlme half on each slde Just what SDSCIGS of football lt was I have nex ez known We vsele proud of our school and QSPGCIZIIW of its recold at the Harvard admlsslon examxnatlons I remember that 1n the greatex palt of our last year lf not ln the whole of it we had a Harvard 3dI'I'llSSl0l'l paper to wrlte every day at school after three recxtatlons 1n three SUCCCSSIVG hours and when we came to the adm1SSlOH exammatlons we felt almost at home When I entered the Lat1n School, Cambrldge had about th11ty thousand mhabltants, and from Ellery Street to Sumner Street the space between Broadway and Cambrldge Street was a cow pasture The school was so small that all the bovs and glrls could attend mormng prayers every dax m a hall on the thlrd floor Recollectlons of the school are always pleasant , and wlth them always comes gratxtude to Mr Bradbury Smcelely yours, I I6l ,- . E QTY INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL EVFNTY FIVE years ago the Cambridge Hlgh and Latln School was founded Seventy five years ago that was ln 1847 almost fourteen years before the CIVII War Our country has changed a great deal smce that time It has almost doubled ln slze Its populatlon IS very much larger ln proportlon Modes of llfe too have changed At that tlme the people of this natlon were not so deeply engrossed m the pursult of the almlghty dollar Indeed lt IS whlspered that they took some sllght lnterest ln the government and prosperlty of the natlon We have progressed smce that tlme In what d1rect1on I w1ll not attempt to say I am not a philosopher Nevertheless we have wlth us today the express tram the automoblle the Elevated the alrplane the radlo the sky scraper the electrlc washlng machlne the well there IS no use contlnulng Anvone IS able to fill out the 11st And these are surely marks of progress ln some dlrectlon The seventy fifth annlversary of a school such as the Cambrldge Hlgh and Latln School IS no small matter It IS the anmversary of an mfimte amount of trouble and dlscouragement and also of an lnfinlte amount of my and achlevement It IS the annlversary of a most 1emark able success a success whlch has lasted throughout seventy Exe yeals and shows everv evldence of lastmg for as many more It IS the annl versary of the foundmg of a great publlc school one of the most 1m portant lnstltutlons 1l'1YOlV6d ln the progress of our country For thls reason we are ln our small way endeavormg to do our best to commem orate this fact by maklng our annual Year Book an anmversary number w1th the history of the school mcorporated w1th1n lts pages We sm cerely hope that thls attempt wlll be met wlth approbatlon although ou1 sources of mformatxon have been meagre and we may have made un fortunate omlsslons In th1s respect we most certalnly owe many words of grateful acknowledgment to Mr Fitzgerald, our superlntendent of schools, to Mr Cleveland, our respected head master, and to Mr Durrel, an enthuslastlc alumnus and the secretary of the Alumni Assoc1at1on, fox their most loyal support and valuable asslstance m maklng thls hlstory posslble Thus we lntroduce you to the hlstory of our school It IS not a com plete hlstory, It IS merely the hlstory of the first seventy five years For the school IS destlned to go on and on It IS an 1H9Stlm3.bl6 power ln the clty, the state, and the natlon It formulates and develops the ldeas IH the plaStlC mmds of the younger generatlon These youths and maidens eventually become the rulers of soclety, and the oplnlons they formed 1n school are broadcasted to the whole world Thus the great mfluence for good, the publlc school, cannot stop, but must go on mdefimtely We slncerely wlsh a continually greater success to thlS our Mother School, the Cambrldge Hlgh and Latm l7l I I lFMm,l :WlW'lMWlM WMNlM:M!lxh , l1CN5,l 1llWlf llElJ !'?
