The class began to think about and plan for the future as the busy year went by. School activities and academics kept the entire class active. This was done by selling magazines at the beginning of the year and running the concession stand at various activities. The highlight of the year was our prom, “Winter Paradise , April 4. C Club Given New Image This year the C Club got a new look with the addition of the girl athletes. Hopefully this will bring more enthusiasm to the Trojan athletic activities. This year the C Club, by itself, put on the Athletic Banquet, and it was a success. The officers this year were, Todd Johnson - President, Alison Sexton - Vice President, David Minnick - Sec. FBLA prepare for the future The Cambridge Future Business Leaders of America had twelve members. This year there were a number of activities that kept them all busy. The FBLA Chapter held a Businessmen’s Coffee and Cake Raffles. Speakers or field trips included Sho-Art Productions on computers, Marge Hatheway speak- ing on Sex Equality, and Nebraska Job Service on applying for a job. Officors of the chapter were: Kay Joseph, President; Bonnie Liggett, Vice President; Jeanette Wickizer, Treasurer; Denise Johnson, Secre- tary; Jill Davis, News Reporter; Karen Brougham, Parliamentarian. At district land judging held October 7 at Beaver City, they took first and second in team competition and on February 10 the chapter went to Curtis for more district competition. The Ag Mechanics team took first, receiving a plaque and qualifying for state competition. The last district competition held before state was held at McCook on March 5. At McCook, they received four first place plaques and qualified in Agronomy, Entomology, Farm Management and Meats for state competition. This year state competition was held on April 9 at Lincoln with fourteen members attending. Members also received many individual ribbons. The Farm Management team placed highest among District 7 teams at state which earned them $62.50 from the Federal Credit Bank in Omaha. A look at Student Council The Student Council was in charge of the Christmas party once again this year. The party consisted of a film, an obstacle course race, and then followed with refreshments. The One-Act Play got a “I” rating at District and went on to compete at State. Their cast includ- ed: Kathy Frandsen, Ange Musil, Alan Nelson, Todd Johnson, Paul Lockenour, Brenda Knight, Mike Hotchkiss, Blaise Liess, and Jill Ankenman. Only one person participated in District Speech. Brenda Knight received a “I” in informative speaking and competed at State. There she received a “I” and was placed 7th in the state. Cheerleaders ignite in 80-81 The Cheerleaders started their 1980-81 season with a trip to Doane College where they attended an ICF cheerleader camp. A new experience for the cheerleaders this year was the absence of a pep club to holp boost team spirit. This left a big responsibility on them. Right: Let me see your masked rider (Kim Jones), what's that you say? Homecoming Scenes From 1980-81 The Homecoming week this year was an exciting one. The cheerleaders sponsored Spirit Week while the student body was encouraged to participate. They also gave the football team a public pep rally where the candidates for King and Queen were announced. The lack of a pep club caused the cheerleaders to work extra hard. Their support was greatly appreciated. Unfortunately it was not enough to lead them to victory. They were defeated by the Arapahoe Warriors. The annual crowning of the Homecoming Royalty followed the game. The cheerleaders perform in a skit for the public at the pep rally. Kiddy Day makes accounting a little better for the Juniors. 32 Homecoming Royalty for 1980-81 The King and Queen chosen to represent CHS for the 1980-81 school year are Jeff Klinkebeil and Suzanne Morgan. Todd Johnson and Kay Joseph are chosen as first attendants. Alan Nelson and Ange Musil are chosen for second attendants. 88 Sophomores make bucks! The sophomores raised $640 while having a lot of fun at their Penny Arcade this year. Mr. Tompkins can’t watch as Chuck Eubanks smashes the pie on his head. Moreland speaks at Athletic Banquet Tim Moreland was the guest speaker at the 1981 Athletic Ban- quet. Mr. Moreland is a well-known radio broadcaster for KFOR radio in Lincoln. He spoke on the advantages and opportunities offered in a small school and community. Russ and Connie Tompkins provided music for the Banquet, which was enjoyed by both students and guests. Following the Ranquet. a dance was held, with Fred Kennedy provid- ing the music and lights. Mr. Schoenfish serves as the Master of Ceremonies at the Banquet. Winter Paradise frozen in our minds The theme for the 1981 Junior- Senior Prom was Winter Paradise, which was held April 4. The servers were Denise Johnson, Bonnie Liggett, Janet Witte, Lori tenBensel, Dianna Highland, Doris Hansen, Kurt Miller, Rod Finne, Rob Druse, Vincent Chitwood, David Minnick and Tom Patterson. The gym atten- dant was Val Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Russ Tompkins and Ms. Roxie Bennett provided the entertainment. Back again by request was the band Luk. They participated in the Christmas and Spring programs, and the open house. They also performed an individual number at the RVL Vocal Clinic held in Arapahoe. Hassle. „ 21 PENN CAMBRIDGE NE 69022 Band marches to a different tune The Cambridge High School had its ups and downs this season. To start the year. Mr. Tom Egan led the Band. Upon his resignation in December, the Band was without an instructor. Miss Roxy Bennett, the music instructor, had majored in Band direction and stepped in to become their first female director. Her determination and leadership took the Band to district competition where they received a III. Several small groups performed. Suzanne Morgan and Kris Peck play their flute duet at the spring concert. 41 Majorettes compliment Band The majorettes for 1980-81 provided entertainment at various occasions. To prepare for the season they all attended a one week workshop at Hastings College where they were taught to show grace, precision and leadership. The football season once again was fortunate enough to have the majorettes perform at all half time shows. Twirling fire was one of the main events. Their presentation of two dance routines during basketball season was enjoyed by all fans. The twirlers do a routine to Dance. Dance, Dance at a half time show. Tho majorette highlight the marching band during a half time show. Despite the cold weather, the twirlers still perform. The majorettes for 1980-81 are as shown: Kay Joseph, Candy Joseph, Bonnie Liggett, Lisa Young, Karen Brougham, and Margie Johnson. 42 Trojan volleyball faces competition The Cambridge Volleyball girls worked very hard and gave a good account of themselves in many games. Yet they had a disappointing and frustrating season with a 3-11 record. But the team can always look to the future. It was an especially hard year for the three seniors, Brenda, Kathy, the pep talk . . . and Suzanne. These girls will be missed very much next season; they contributed much to the program. The prospects for next year should be good with eight returning varsity letter- women for a firm nucleus to build on. The Junior Varsity gets a pep talk. With the majority of the starters being underclassmen, they managed to win three games out of nine while gaining valuable experience. One of the wins came in the first overtime game to be played at Cambridge when they beat Oxford 18 to 12. The Trojan outlook for next year should be good. The cheerleaders line up for the introducing of the Cambridge Trojans starters. 47 Four wrestlers qualify for state The wrestling team sent Mike Jesse, Dan Pearson, and Ben Trosper to State this year. Ken Fries also qualified, but was unable to attend because of illness. Ben placed fifth in the State, while Mike and Dan were eliminated in the wrestlebacks. However, several of those losses were by just a few points. Seven seniors will be graduating from this year's team. They are Ted Raburn, Bob Sexton, Ron Brougham, Jeff Klinkebiel, J. D. Trojan golfers do best in C.H.S. history This year the Trojan golfers set many new records at Cambridge. Their victories included firsts at Wauneta, Trenton, and the District Tournament, while receiving second place trophies at Franklin, RVL, and the Lawrence Invitational. In- dividually, Rocky won six medals, Todd won four, J. D. won four, Steve won one, and Jim Lowry won one. Tom Patterson’s participation in many of the meets contributed much to the team also. Girls place seventh at State The Cambridge Oirls Track had a good season finishing seventh at State, despite having a small team. Brenda Palmer had an outstanding year by breaking 24 records and being named Outstanding Female Athlete at the Alma Twilight. Those competing at the State Track Meet included Brenda Palmer in the 100, 200 and 400 meters and Brenda, Kim Jones, Alison Sexton, and Tammy Custer in the 440 relay. The Trojan tracksters’ most impor- tant quality was that they constantly improved, having their best day at Districts, where they took fifth out of seventeen teams. Troians represented in four sports at State Many individuals participated at state competition this year. Mike Jesse, Dan Pearson, and Ben Trosper competed in wrestling with Ben winning fifth place. Harpst, Todd Johnson, Steve Brougham, Rocky Hampton, and Jim Lowry. Individual honors went to J. D. and Todd who placed third and eighth respectively. One of the new additions to the 1980-81 classes was the Future Problem Solving Team. The team, which included: Jill Ankenman, Bruce Dragoo. Blaise Liess, and Larry Cornett, qualified for state competition. The team members were selected for their scholastic abilities. The other additions are: com- puter science, adult living. T.V. Students recognized at Awards Night Many awards were given at Awards Night. All athletes who had lettered in any sport were presented their letter or bar. Jeff Klinkebiel received the Butch Luther Award and Brenda Palmer the Girls Outstanding Senior athlete. Music awards were presented to band members who lettered as well as a music award to Brenda Knight, John Philip Sousa and Arian award to Suzanne Morgan and choral award to Bob Sexton. Suzanne Morgan was the recipient of the science, math, history, and English medals while Kay Joseph received the business medal. Drama awards were presented to Kathy Frandsen as best actress, Todd Johnson as best actor, Brenda Knight the speech activities and Paul Lockenour the backstage and technical assistance award. The Junior escorts were Alison Sexton and Jeff Hageman. We have opened the door, the future lies before us” was the class motto. The class colors were Princess Blue and Wonder White and class flower was the rose. Graduation was an exciting and scary moment. We were no longer the underclassmen; we had made it to the top! The journey was a long and winding road filled with good times and bad. Now we were on our own to put to use all we had learned as well as learn more about the world and ourselves.
