The Seniors were quite active in all activities including scholastic, sports, music and student body. Class officers were President Dan Zabel, Vice President Kurk Koch, Secretary Steve Phillips, Treasurer Theresa Palmer and Student Council Representatives Mike Kubik, Amy Eubanks, Denise Wilson, Tom Gross, Waid Zysset and Bob Tomlin. Graduating with the Senior Class was Maria Kristiina Ihalainen, exchange student from Finland. She was quite active in all CHS involvement. The Senior class graduated May 15, 1977. The Juniors kept up the pace throughout the year! In the spring they put on the Jr.-Sr. Banquet and Prom which highlighted all of their efforts. Homecoming 76-77 Sept. 24 was the date of the 1976-77 Homecoming at the Clint John Field. The homecoming King and Queen were Waid Zysset and Colleen O’Brien followed by first attendants Kurk Koch and Nan Mollring and second attendants Roger Witte and Melinda Wight. 26 The best year of all “The Best of All” was the theme for this year’s Athletic Banquet held on April 23. Vince Ferragamo was the guest speaker for the evening. Entertainment at the banquet was the Cambridge Stage Band. A dance was held afterwards in the gym with music by Red Tag and Friends. Sophomores plan arcade. “She Fainted Again” In the spring, the juniors presented their Junior Class Play, “She Fainted Again.” They gave a matinee in the afternoon and another performance in the evening which was well accepted by the crowd attending. Ellis and J. Farr enjoy an evening together packing. 29 “Stairway to Heaven” “Stairway to Heaven” was the theme of the 1976-1977 Jr.-Sr. Prom. A banquet was held in the Catholic Parish Hall. The photography area. 30 Graduation 1977 Thirty-five seniors received diplomas on May 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the gym. The seniors chose Royal Blue and Princess Blue as their class colors, Red Rose as their class flower, and their class motto was Finished, Yet Beginning. Speeches by Tom Gross-Valedictorian and Waid Zysset - Salutatorian were presented and Gloria Meyerle gave the Class History. Brenda Klocke and Kenny Kester were the Junior Escorts. The officers this year were Amy Eubanks, president; Marcia Mowry, vice-president; Melanie Miller, junior vice- president; Gloria Meyerle, treasurer; and Sherri Kfinkebiel, Student Council representative. They helped in preparing the annual Athletic Banquet with the featured speaker Vince Ferragamo. Waid Zysset was chosen by the members to be the recepient of the coveted Butch Luther Award, given to the senior who is outstanding in athletics as well as scholastic endeavors. Waid Zysset accepts Butch Luther Award. “Do you know where you’re going to?’’ The 76-77 FHA Club kept the club in order the whole year. In the fall the club held a slumber party and attended the FBLA Caroling Party. All members attended the District Workshop under the theme of “Do You Know Where You’re Going To?” and in the spring three members attended State Convention in Lincoln with Miss Neihart. The 1976-77 school year provided various activities and contests for the members of the Future Farmers of America Chapter of Cambridge to participate in. Among the many events, the few mentioned included a soup supper at Mr. Jorgensen’s home in November. District Ag Judging contests at McCook in March, FFA Convention and contests at Lincoln in April, and a boating party at the lake in June. Lonny Klinkebiel proved himself as an outstanding individual placing first in three contests. Lonny placed first in tractor driving at Curtis which enabled him to represent Cambridge’s FFA chapter in competition at the State Fair in September of 1976. He also placed first in Farm Mechanics, electricity division at Curtis, and in Farm Management at McCook, the latter rewarded him a scholarship to MCC and a chance to compete at State. The chapter found many activities to involve each and every member. The chapter hosted a Caroling Party in December and invited the FHA and FFA members to sing along. Four members attended State Convention on March 31, April 1 and 2. Bringing home awards were Marlene Niemeier in General Business. Judy Tomlin the the Creed, Marlene Niemeier and Kirk Ellis the the Poster Contest, the Chapter Scrapbook Recognition and Kirk Ellis received membership into Who’s Who in Nebraska FBLA. This year five juniors and four seniors gave their time in putting together the yearbook. Although it takes a lot of hard work and patience, there are times we all have fun, except for Miss Holtze and Mr. Kapustka, who try their best at keeping us busy. Annual Staff creates memories Student Council, Paper Staff New band uniforms brighten the year The band attended the NEBRASKAland day Parade in North Platte last summer, and during the school year they participated in the R.V.L. Rand Clinic in Arapahoe in which a mass band consisting of surrounding schools practiced together for half a day and held a concert in the evening. The band took part in the Christmas Program and Spring Concert. The band’s highlight of the year was getting new uniforms. The band parents used their funds from selling refreshments after the annual fall music program to help pay the expense. Schlagel. 45 Vocal music groups do well at contest The various singing groups had a busy year this year. They performed at the Christmas program, Spring Pop Concert, and contest. All the groups did quite well at contest. Mixed Chorus received a I rating. Ginger tenBensel and Marlene Niemeier also received I ratings on their solos. Madrigal and Java both received II ratings. Madrigal at Christmas program. 47 Si Public attends style show All students in the home economics classes helped in the spring style show using the theme “Turn On To Fashion.” Although the bachelor living class did not model their garments, they assisted with script, stage and refreshments. We were unable to make the state playoffs for the second year in a row, but defeated Nelson, the defending state champs, in the RVL playoff. With some upsets in the state playoffs, and Cambridge being the only undefeated class Dll man football team, we prevailed at the top. There were three trophies won, RVL West, All-RVL, and Mid Valley best season record. Three players received All-State honors, Steve Phillips, Waid Zysset, and Roger Witte. This year’s team had the honor of capturing the first Cross Country trophies ever received in the history of Cambridge High School. Injuries to two of the teams more prominent members erased a chance for a team berth in the state meet. Greg Morgan and Larry Sayer qualified for state in the district meet at Ord. They were 8-1 in duals and received a trophy in every tournament but state. The Trojans hosted their own tournament this year where they had three individual champions placed second. A strong Amherst team, which eventually won the state tournament, finished first. They were not able to bring home any trophies. Five events qualified for state: D. Thompson in the 440 220 dashes, N. Mollring in the shot put, 440 relay (C. Miller, M. Miller, B. Klocke, D. Peterson running the mile at district, placing 4th. 60 Boys track excels The 1977 track team had a very fine season, winning their Invitational Relay Meet, the Arapahoe Invitational, MVL Conference, Kearney Invitational — Class D, and Districts. They were second at Bertrand, Alma, and RVL, and finished the season by placing as State Class D runner-up, behind champion Mullen. The two-mile relay team of Larry Sayer, Cliff Kester, Waid Zysset and Steve Phillips finished first and claimed a new state meet record of 8:15.0 in Class D. The 880-yard relay team of Ken Kester, Floyd Childers, Tim Petersen, and Brad Edgerton placed second behind a good Wauneta quartet. Ken Kester raced to a very close second place in the 180 low hurdles, and Steve Phillips added a sixth place finish in the 880-yard run. Scott Nickerson tied for fourth place in the pole vaut and the mile relay team of Larry Sayer, Brad Edgerton, Waid Zysett and Steve Phillips placed fourth in that event.
