May 2, 1963 Me Cook, Nebraska Dear Shirley, Thought I’d better take time off from grading my test papers to drop you a few lines. Started reminiscing this morning and happened to think of you. Golly, it seems like such a short time ago since we were in high school and college together, but I guess we have to admit that we are getting older all the time. Ten years ago since we graduated from good ole C.H.S. --My! I often wonder what the rest of the kids in our class are doing now! See some of them once in a while, but I’ve lost tab on about half of the kids. You know that Lavana is teaching here in McCook now, don’t you? She has the third grade in North Ward and I have the second grade. She married Rich Meader from Holbrook, and he’s working on the railroad now. They come over quite often and we have some very nice times together. Herb has landed a good job teaching vocal music in Kearney State Teacher’s College. He has also made several appearances on television, both singing with his wife, Carol, and conducting his group. Sharon and Gay have settled in Cambridge. They have taken over Bellamy’s Drug Store and have remodeled it again. They seem to be doing very well! Never see Dixie Swanson much anymore. She and Swede are farming outside of Curtis. Last I heard they had four fine children, two girls and two boys. You remember when they got married right after Dixie graduated from high school. Say, here I am talking on about everyone else, and I haven’t even asked how you and Charlie are! Is Charlie still working on the railroad? My husband and I plan to be in Denver this August, so we’ll try our best to find time to look you up. How is your boy, Thad, by now. Sorry to hear that you almost lost him to the pneumonia germ several weeks ago. I sincerely hope that he’s doing much better by now. Saw Billy Brown in town the other day. He is really doing great as the head of the Democratic Party in Nebraska. He is carrying on the farm south of town, too. Jerry Petersen is doing very well on his ranch north of Cambridge. He bought an old, run down piece of land, and is making a very beautiful ranch home out of it. He isn’t married yet, believe it or not. Maybe he’s waiting for Annie to graduate from med. school. Marilyn and Phil are very happy in their lovely farm home. They got married five years ago after Marilyn got her “higher education.” I hope it does her a lot of good in running their home and raising their twins. Oh, speaking of Marilyn recalls Anita to my mind. She and Henry married several years ago, and they now own the controlling interest in the McCook Ice Cream plant. Now for all the rest of the boys that have kept to the old Cambridge area. First, there’s Norman. He could be quite a celebrity in the athletic field by now, but he prefers to farm his place north of Cambridge. You probably heard that he won first place honors in the high jump in the last Olympics. It didn’t go to his head, though. He’s still the same old “Thumper.” Then there's Pat, who is now running for county sheriff of Furnas county. Remember when we were juniors in high school and Pat won the sheriff’s office for County Government Day? Law en- forcement must have taken hold of him then. Gerald Sisson is in McCook quite a bit at the cattle sales. He's farming outside of Cambridge, now. To pull a pun, I hear he’s now milking six cows and raising six kids. So that’s six of one, and half a dozen of another. Well, golly, I believe I’ve just about runout of the latest dope on all our old friends. Please write and tell me any news you might have of the rest of the Class of ’53. Here's hoping we'll get to see you this summer. Sincerely, Ernee Fidler

May 20, 1963 Denver, Colorado Dear Ernie, I was very glad to hear from you and sorry I didn’t get around to answering sooner. Thad is much better, but it’s kept me pretty busy taking care of him and keeping Ted from wrecking the house. Yes, Charlie is still working on the railroad. He was promoted to engineer on the “Skyway” last month. We flew to Chicago last fall for the championship football game between the Bears and the Tigers. I could hardly believe my eyes when Iread the line-up------Francis Brown was playing right guard for the Bears! He played a darned good game, too. I ran into another old class-mate while we were there. Thelma and her husband were down from Wisconsin to the game. They really have a wonderful dairy farm up there. I believe she said they have 33 Jersey’s and three children. There was one more surprise in store for me on that trip--the head hostess on the plane coming home was none other than Dixie Williams. She’s quitting her job this spring to marry the pilot. Say, Dixie told me that on her last flight to South America one of the passengers was old Leon O’Brien. He and his bride were enroute to Cuba where he is now stationed as Commander-in-Chief of a big army base. They stopped in Florida for repairs and were there long enough to take in the midget auto races at Daytona Beach. Larry Paisley pulled in first in the finals. It was his first big race with the “jet- mobile ’ he designed. Jan Coba wrote me a nice long letter a few weeks ago. She landed a swell job last year modeling for the famous Conover Agency in New York and now she’s engaged to Harry Conover III. I always had a feeling that girl would go places. She said she had a long talk with Jean Conlin a few days before she wrote me. Jean is teaching speech and dramatics at Vassar; she, too, is sporting a big “sparkler” now. I saw in the paper the other day that Jim Lemmon was appointed head veterinarian for the Armed Forces and is stationed permanently in Washington D.C. He and Janet and their four children will have a great time there. Mom sent me a clipping from the World Herald about Pee Wee (Kenneth) Cross. He is the con- struction engineer for the Eisenhower Dam that is to be started this year in Oklahoma. I sure hope Virginia will like it down there. Her two little girls will see to it that she has plenty to keep her busy. I’ll bet. Now let me see, is that about everybody? Oh, yes, Donna Rauch is right here in Denver. She married her boss at the Cleanrite Laundry and is now busy raising their own set of triplets and two sets of twins. And Bill Flint is now a lifeguard at the municipal swimming pool in San Diego. He says that’s the best place he could think of to settle down and watch for the girl of his dreams. Well, I guess that takes care of everyone. Remember to let me know when you’re coming out.
