The queen candidates were chosen bythe various clubs and organizations. The candidates and their sponsors included: Peggy Duncan, Phi Alpha Nu, Connie Ankrom, Key Club, Mary Moore, Future Teachers, Mimi Eikenberry, Junior l-li-Y, Jeri Covvgill, Senior Hi-Y, Matoula Chelekis, Student Council, Dixie Worth, Reporter, and Theda Morrow, Y-Teens. TEN May Day . . . 1956 Mr. and Mrs. McFarland always enjoy any activity sponsored by the students of C.H.S. This pic- ture was taken at the Y-Teen Formal. Each year, members ofthe girls' physical educa- tion classes present dances for the pleasure of the May Queen and her court. Pictured here is one of the colorful gypsy dances, which was a part of the i956 May Day pageant. This was a gay and happy experience for all members of the girls' physical education classes, who sponsored the event. The May Queen, Theda Morrow, and her court ruled over the festive occasion and the color- ful dances were enioyed by all. Remember . . . the Elf and the Shoemaker . . . the March of the Wooden Soldiers . . . Doll Dance . . . the Waltz? These we will Always Remember. We were approaching the top rung of our ladder. Van Rigby was re-elected president, with Tom Siegfried, Theda Morrow, and Don Smith helping him. John Hayes headed Student Council, with members-at-large Van Rigby, Bud Yost, Peggie Duncan, and Diane Sohner. When we lost Bud to Newark High, David Gay replaced him. Home Room representatives were Theda Morrow, Arthur Bragg, Connie Ankrom, Kay Hardesty, and Chris Dahl. Chris Dahl was president of Y-Teens, Jacqueline Jones of Pi Alpha Nu, Peggie Duncan and Judy Penn co-editors of the Reporter , Bob Long president of Key Club, Wayne Riehl of Senior Hi-Y, Margaret Volz of G.A.A., Betty Phillips of Future Nurses, David Gay of Future Teachers, and Don Smith of National Honor Society, into which 29 excited seniors were inducted. ln sports, Van Rigby and Paul Fields were co-captains of the football team which won 4 and lost 5 games. Paul Fields was selected on the All-C.O.L. team, and also the All-Ohio team. In basketball, John Bates gained a berth on the All-C.O.L. team, and became the second highest scorer in C.H.S. history. Cheerleaders were Mary Eikenberry, Connie Ankrom, Mary Moore, Martha Moore, and Kay Boyd, and maiorettes were Rosalie Moore, Theda Morrow, Dixie Worth, Sandra Remley, Jeri Cow- gill, and Pat McCoy. Connie Ankrom reigned as Homecoming Queen with Mary Moore, Mary Eikenberry, Jeri Cowgill and Dixie Worth as her attendants. Theda Morrow reigned as Queen over the beautiful May Day ceremony. Her Maid of Honor was Matoula Chelekis, and Peggie Duncan represented the Senior Class as an attendant. This year, the choir presented two operettes - Cumberland Fair and Down in the Valley , aand several other concerts including the memorable Pops Concert . We also presented for the first time, a Senior Class Play - The Red House Mystery , and the annual Hi-Y dramatic eftort, HilIbiIly Weddin'. Social activities of the year included the Y-Teen Formal, Silhouette Swirl , the Reporter and Band Banquets, and the G.A.A., Key Club and Hi-Y Formals. Many honors were brought to C.H.S. by members of this Senior Class - Girls' Ensemble No. l received a No. l rating at the State Solo and Ensemble Contest, in the General Scholarship Tests, we received six out of the top ten places in Guernsey County -aDavid Gay was first in the county, followed by John Druesedow, David Selway, Kenneth Reed, Don Sigman, and Peggie Duncan. John Bailey and David Selway placed high in the National Merit Scholarship Test. On Nov. 3, T956 The class attended The Muskingum College Drama and Poetry Read- ing Clinic and in April of 1957 enjoyed two speech recitals presented on the campus of Mus- kingum College. The busy year will be completed with presentation of Dramatic emblems to members and an evening social affair.
