After graduating from Hastings High School, he received a bachelor's degree from St. Francis College, and following extensive study at Clarion State Teachers' College, Indiana State Teachers' College, the University of Colorado, and Goddard University of Vermont, he earned his master of edu- cation degree from Goddard. Besides his teaching duties, Mr. Pipas also helped at the physical end of the iob by serving as junior varsity basketball coach for many years. Mr. Pipas brought alive the world of plants, animals, and insects with his many specimens and examples. What CCHS alumnus of the last twenty-two years could ever forget being guided through the frog dissection under Mr. Pipas's patient guidance? His biology instruction was one of the highlights of our sophomore curriculum. We, the class of T970 of Central Cam- bria High School, dedicate this Oracle to Mr Michael Pipas - friend, teacher, and class sponsor. MR. PIPAS Our Class, the class of 1970, had the good fortune of having Mr. Pipas serve as one of our sponsors. He helped to unite us as freshmen and prepare us to become active members of Central Cambria. Our sophomore year he served as head sponsor. During this year, our magazine sale was very successful thanks to Mr. Pipas's gentle prodding. He was there when the sale was over to proudly hand out the stuffed dogs to all deserving salesmen. Our Prom could never have been the spectacular success it was without the help and dedication of Mr. Pipas and our other sponsors. That night, our night, he was there to share in our eve- ning of dancing. As graduating members of our class, one memory that cannot be erased from our minds is that of Mr. Pipas's friendly smile, his cheerful gait down the hall, and his hearty Good morn- ing. We wish him continued success in all he endeavors. ' TURN ACTIVITIES THE LOOK GF LGVE 'W 3 THE PRCNW 'W' vig, 1969 XRYW 7 7 'fTi'5 L' 'f'xWW'1WA1. xx 9 A ki X it N 'GL N '1 . .E M! . We came from different areas to unite into one body, subiected to the harassment of the up' perclassmen. Under the supervision of our sponsors - Miss Gordon, Mr. Sey- mour, Mr. Pipas, and Miss Sowolla - we chose our class officers: Pres- ident - Tim Kostelnik, Vice-President - Bob Cunningham, Secretary - Jackie Jones, Treasurer - Sam Davis, Chaplain -John Palko, Histori- an - Charlotte Popovich, Student Council - Ellen Covitch, Nancy En- glehart, Tim Monday, and Gregg Reighard. Realizing that school is not all work, we became involved in various activities. Our freshman team had a promising football season of 4-2-2, and an impressive basketball season with a 4-6 record. The spirited girls chosen as freshman cheerleaders were Ellen Covitch, Nancy Englehart, Charlotte Popovich, Barbara Switzler, and Beverly Switzler. Cecelia Anstead Q? -9' Dennis Joseph Ambrisco Several of us participated in Ebensburg's annual Halloween win- dow painting contest. The team composed of Robin Shea, Jeff Mau- rey, and Linda Ludwig won second prize - the first time freshmen had won a prize in a contest. As our only attendant to the May Queen, we selected Jackie Jones, Michelle Candler and Janet Good served as train bearers for the May Queen. At the end of the year, we elected as our sophomore class officers: President- Sam Davis, Vice-President - Bob Cunningham, Secretary - Jackie Jones, Treasurer - Nancy Englehart, Chaplain - John Palko, Historiam - Charlotte Popovich. To help govern our school as members of Student Council, we selected Michelle Candler, Ellen Co- vitch, Gregg Reighard, Tim Monday, and Linda Shoemaker. As the year drew to a close and we faced thoughts of the long sum- mer without seeing many of our newly-acquired friends, we realized that CCHS had become part of our life. Beard iii Barbara Jean Barno 'CTU Joy Diane Baumgardner i t' i The first day of school found us greeting missed friends with the words, I thought you moved. There was a feeling of belonging this year that we had lacked as freshmen. We welcomed the incoming freshmen by sending them up the down stairs. We held our first class meeting for the purpose of discussing our magazine sale. Later we established our identity by selecting class col- ors, navy blue and gold, class flower, yellow rose, class motto, We come, we see, we conquer. To evaluate our scholastic abilities, the guidance office adminis- tered aptitude and achievement tests. Five sophomores were honored after having received a 9971 rating in the NEDTS lNational Education Development Testsl. They were Peter Gresh, Gregg Reighard, Patricia Davis, Susan Wheeler, and Sandy Schellhammer. In preparation for our role as upperclassmen, we chose our class rings. 'ET lc' Susan Ruth Beckett Our JV football team had a 4-2-l record for the season. Although the season's record did not show it, our JV basketball team exhibited great ability on the court. Following a highly successful track season, Tim Kostelnik and Jim Kline, along with several upperclassmen, com- peted in the state meet, We voted Jackie Jones and Charlotte Popovich as our attendants on the May Court. To lead our class through our junior year, we elected President - Sam Davis, Vice-President - Bob Cunningham, Secretary - Jackie Jones, Treasurer - Nancy Englehart, Assistant Treasurer - Terri Mc- Evoy, Chaplain - John Polka, Historian - Charlotte Popovich, Sergeant-at-Arms - Jim Fagan, Student Council - Linda Shoemaker, Michelle Candler, Darlene Rummell, Ellen Covitch, Gregg Reighard, and Len Plowman. The conclusion of our sophomore year brought sad farewells and promises of see you next year. Yet even then we were planning for our role as upperclassmen. Physical evidence of our high position was the class ring each of us proudly wore. ln order to provide the seniors with the unforgettable prom, we began our planning early. At our first class meeting, we chose a com- mittee to suggest themes for the prom. Instead of holding the prom in the school as had been done in previous years, we received permis- sion to have the prom in the New Germany Hall. The theme, The Look of Love, was chosen, the Continentals were picked as the band, and Henry's Studio was chosen to take the pictures. To finance our prom, we iuniors held the annual Prom Peanut sale. Many of us ate peanuts daily for the next month. Kathleen Johnson ,xt--,r Timothy Roy James As another fund-raising proiect and also as a way to exhibit our acting talents, we presented our iunior class play, The Warm Shall Squirm. The amusing and successful play was under the guidance of Mr. Crowley and student directors Beth Hiner, Denise Datsko, Tom Gorman, and Gary Honnakan. The cast members were Jim Lapina, Gretchen Dreikorn, Gary Vizzini, Jackie Jones, Sandy Schellhammer, Diane Malloy, Joy Baumgardner, Barbara Switzler, Jerry Strayer, Jim Kline, Ellen Covitch, Jack Wolf, and Vince Brisini. The new sport, wrestling, was added to the athletic schedule of CCHS. Those participating iuniors were Allen Vorhauer, Gregg Reig- hard, John Shaffer, Dan Hughes, Jim Fagan, George Gerber, Dave Haizus, Dan Decker, and Tim Kostelnik. Because of their skill on the mat, Jim Fagan and George Gerber were chosen to attend the sec- tional bouts. He was also the anchorman on the mile relay team which won first place. We learned that sorrow is a part of living too. Our hearts were sad- dened by the tragic death of one of our classmates, Robert Scott Giles, in an auto accident on December l5, l968. Spring arrived and brought with it our iunior prom on April l2. With the help of Mr. Seymour, head sponsor, and Mr. Smith, who re- placed Miss Sowolla, we worked diligently to make our prom THE BEST. The extra effort we put forth was rewarded when the prom was termed by far the largest and grandest ever held. As a remem- brance of the occasion, each girl was given a love seat charm. In preparation for the SAT's, Mr. and Mrs. Solomon conducted a preparatory course for students on two Fridays each month. On May 3, those of us college bound took the dreaded college boards. These tests showed us how much we really didn't know. '-YJ! Andrea Ruth Kinash The following Saturday was May Day, we had decided upon Jack- ie Jones, Charlotte Popovich, and Nancy Englehart as our representa- tives. ' To prepare for our new position as seniors, we elected the fol- lowing to lead us through our last year of high school: President - Tim Kostelnik, Vice-President - Tim Monday, Secretary - Jackie Jones, Treasurer - Nancy Englehart, Assistant Treasurer - Beth Hiner, Sergeant-at-Arms - George Gerber, Chaplain - John Palko, Historian - Charlotte Popovich, Student Council - Michelle Candler, Ellen Covitch, Len Plowman, Linda Shoemaker, Darlene Rummell, Gregg Reighard, Cindy Rice, and Sandy Schellhammer, The student body chose peppy Sue Wheeler as the new Red Devil, symbol of school spirit. As our iunior year came to an end, many of us recalled how we had changed since we entered high school. Now we looked forward to the summer and farther beyond to our reign as seniors and the ful- fillment of our dream - We come, we see, we conquer. AX., i The fall of T969 brought new responsibilities as we, the Class ot l97O achieved seniority at CCHS. Along with our high position we seemed to have acquired a new dignity that said, l'm a senior, and I'm proud of it. Among our responsibilities as seniors was the ordering of name cards and announcements, an activity which made graduation seem a reality. During the previous summer, many ot us had had our senior pictures taken at Henry's Studio. As pictures were exchanged, we real- ized how much our classmates meant to us and how soon we would be parted. We attended the traditional Civil Defense Classes this year under the direction of Mr. Singel. We also visited the courthouse to learn how the county is governed. These were only o few of the ways in which our high school training helped to prepare us to become re- sponsible citizens. Robert Joseph Rodgers Cynthia Jean Rice Honors were eorned by many of us. Our band, sporting new uni- forms, carried off first prize honors at the Firemen's Parade during Fair Week. Gregg Reighard and Patricia Davis were National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists. Pete Gresh received o Letter of Commenda- tion .for his performance on the NMSQT. Joy Baumgardner, Beth Hiner, and Pete Gresh were chosen as Outstanding Teenagers of Am- erica for 1969. Tim Kostelnik was chosen as a recipient of the Tribune-Democrat Player-Scholarship Award. This year the choosing of senior favorites became an activity in which all seniors were involved. After much deliberation we chose the following: Athletics - Karen Claridge, Tim Kostelnik, Spirit - Sue Wheeler, Tom Gorman, Humor - Gretchen Dreikorn, Jim Lapina, Neatness - Lou Ann Martin, Boris Banda, Personality - Fran Wilson, Dean Grove, Leadership - Jackie Jones, John Polka, Courtesy - Kathy Brown, Bob Cunningham, Cooperation - Michelle Condler, Norman W. Roles ,Z .ed W Galen John Rose John Ronald Roseberry ur' ' 1 Richard Michael Rudolph Darlene Rummell Louise Sabo Gregg Reighard, Dance - Terri McEvoy, Mark Louffer, Smile - Char- lotte Popovich, Jim Cesarz, Studies - Patti Davis, Pete Gresh, Talent - Diane Malloy, Dave Hoover. We seniors were active in athletics. Our football team had a mem- orable season, ending with a 5-5 record. School spirit was at its high- est, we reaffirmed our predominant position during pep assemblies where we yelled the longest and the loudest. Our vivacious cheerlead- ers, who lecl the student body in boosting athletic morale, attended the Cambria County Cheerleading Contest. Although they didn't win, their cheer, Devils Have Arrived, expressed the feeling of the sen- iors of CCHS. On December 5, we presented our senior class play, Curtain Call for Clifford, proclaimed by all to be the best ever. In the spring we, who last year had honored, were this year hon- ored by the junior prom. This was an occasion which we would al- Richard Sassano wil' r gl l John Charles Schaefer ways recall in the years to come. As seniors May Court was our way to honor the fairest ot our young ladies. But the coming of May Day reminded us that our re- maining days at CCHS were few. These were happy-sad times. We senior girls were honored at the annual tea given by the Busi- ness and Professional Women. All the seniors attended the Senior Ban- quet. With May came graduation - a time for fond remembrances and hopeful aspirations. We had entered CCHS as freshmen, not knowing what to expect. Now, four years later, we were relinquishing our hal- lowed place as seniors. We realized that never again would we be a total unit as we were during high school days, more dear to us than we had ever realized. We came, we saw, we conquered, and now it was time for us to leave.
