Yet, in their entirety, they com- prise the essence of why we are here, why we are seeking an education. All these things together are focused on one goal, one para- mount importance, and that goal is the attain- ment of knowledge. Frances Bacon said, Knowledge is Power. With this thought in mind, the 1966 Oracle shall attempt to review the divisions of school life - faculty, activities, organizations, classes. Over 6000 volumes are housed in the library, plus a large number of maga- zines, periodicals, and newspa- pers. This year, for the first time, iuniors were offered a class, taught by Miss Brown and Mr. Solomon, in which they prepared for the college board tests. The department carried out a broad testing pro- gram, which included aptitude, interest, and achievement tests, and also conducted an ex- tensive program of group counseling. ln addition the guidance office was always open to any stu- dent who wished to obtain information concern- ing courses of study, admission to college, or vo- cational opportunities. 5-17 L 1i1 S2 1 'zz t ff: 'tiff waist ll! in-af I ill Those of us that trudged in to the guidance office around February ist to inform Mr. Glass we hacln't applied to college yet received this sort of look. H1st0ry Today's students of Central Cambria will be tomorrow's citizens of the world. Keeping this thought in mind, the history department strives to teach each student the fundamentals and value of democracy. With mounting world tensions and conflicts, students must be trained to understand people in foreign lands. The aims of Pennsylvania History, Civics, American History, World History, and Problems of Democracy are to help to mold the thinking and actions of the future citizens. Teachers in this department are Mr. Gaynor, Miss Liphart, Mr, Seymour, Mr. Seaman, and Miss Beyer. Miss Liphart, along with American History students Mike Yesenosky and Mary Ann McCullough is discussing the presidential calendar which hangs in her room The essay that Mr. Seymour is reading seems to be getting a rise out of his third period POD class - T. A lil: l QQ if Miss Brown challenges one of her freshman English students English is a subiect studied by each and every student-freshman or senior, academic or indus- trial arts. All students spend time studying gram- mar, spelling, punctuation, composition, and lit- erature in each of their four high school years. In addition, one semester of English Composition is compulsory for all college-bound students, and art and music appreciation is offered to seniors. Teach- ers in the department this year were Mr. Anodide, Miss Brown, Mr. Crowley, Mrs. Gibb, Miss Gordon, Mr. Pellicioni, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Solomon, Mr. Stevens, and Mrs. Scotilla, who substituted for Mrs. Solomon during the second semester. Well, at least that's what Plato thought. Whether or not we think so too is of little concern, for mathe- matics is required of all students-regardless of course. Academic students are offered two years of algebra and one year each of plane geometry and advanced math. Non-academics, on the other hand, are offered general math and shop math, while business math is compulsory for commercial students. Teachers in this department are Mr. Brown, Mr. DeRubis, Mr. Keith, Mr. Krumenaker, and Mr. Solomon. Dick Hershel's answer may not be correct, but, iudging from the reaction of Mr. Krumenaker's Algebra l class, it must be pretty funny. Mathematics Mr. DeRubis is showing Herb. The students explore near- ly every field of the arts-ceramics, jewel- ry, sculpture, and painting are among the many. They learn and practice both the practical and the aesthetic aspects of art. The art students develop their crea- tive potentials to the utmost. Art Ceramics is only one of the fields in which members of the Art Department engage. Exactly what these fel- lows are doing is anyone's guess. Health and Physicist Education 34' A sound mind in a sound body -the obiective of the classic Greek education system. Central Cambria is hardly ancient Greece, but it goes without saying that a rigorous physical education program is of prime importance in the preparation ot youth for life. In accordance with this, physical education is a must for all CCHS students. The boys' gym classes, taught by Mr. Miller, meet on Mondays, Wednesdays., and al- ternate Fridays, Mrs. Sides teaches the girls' gym classes on the remaining days. ln addition, Mr. Miller and Mrs. Sides conduct health education classes for all freshmen and seniors. This Freshman in Mrs. Sides' third period Health Education class is becoming familiar with the organs of the human body. 6' 'I The main obiective of the home economics department is to train high school girls to become capable and efficient homemakers. Consequently, every ninth-grade girl is required to study home economics. For those ma- ioring in the subiect, the department offers a sequential course. In addi- tion, a popular elective course is of- fered for those students enrolled in other courses. Subiect material includ- es child care, cooking, dress design- ing, grooming, interior decorating, and sewing. iff- 'V x ti I t t, Above, Mrs. Orner, home economics instructor, discusses the proper way to wind a bobbin with homemakers Sharon. These Ag boys are diligently clearing away the stumps of the evergreen trees which edged the left drive of the school Agriculture One of the most practical courses of study is that of vocational agriculture. Not only does this course provide the students with instruction in areas such as the production of vegetables, fruits, grains, and livestock, it also offers instruc- tion in Farm mechanics, forestry, soil and water conservation, etc. In this way, boys are prepared for careers not only in farming but also in agricultural business and industry. Under the direction of Mr. Brown, Ag students also participate in the Cambria County Fair and in the State Farm Show. l Industrial Arts Mr. Farabaugh watches as one of his I students struggles with the hacksaw. The boys in woodshop, instructed by Mr. Orange, learn to operate many industrial machines. In addition, each boy makes several wood- en items ranging from coffee tables to large gun cabinets. The boys in metal shop, under the direction of Mr. Fara- baugh, make various tools, such as screw- drivers and hammers, They also learn the correct procedures for safe machine opera- tion. In October, under the direction of a new yearbook advisor-Mr. Buchan- an, work on the 1966 Oracle began. A literary staff consisting of iuniors and seniors was chosen, and editors and sub-editors were appointed. A theme was selected, and a rough dummy prepared. Then work began in earnest. Our photographer snapped hundreds of pictures, the sub-editors prepared layout after layout, and the entire literary staff produced write-ups by the dozen. lt wasn't long before our book began to take shape. Meanwhile the business staff-head- ed by Mr. Stormer-was also busy. Sponsors and patrons were found, homeroom representatives were chos- en, ancl orders for Oracles were taken. Polchito The beginning of the T965 Varsity Football campaign marked the arrival of a new head coach, Mr. Seymour, and the return of' eleven varsity lettermen. At football camp, our gridders practiced hard, and they were in high spirits for the initial contest with East Conemaugh. The hard work paid off as we pulled out a close, 20-T8 victory over the Iron Horses. The next week brought a 25-7 rout of Triangle Area, and, in the weeks to follow, our Red Devils continued their winning way. First there was an T8-6 triumph over Cresson Joint, a conquest which returned to us the traditional Goal-Post Trophy. Then came our fourth straight victory-a T3-6 win over Conemaugh Twp. For the first time in four years, the Devils stood at the brink of a winning season. Then disaster struck! Coming up against a string of strong teams, our gridders were plagued with iniuries. We dropped games to Hollidaysburg and Westmont Hilltop, both power- houses, then were downed by Cambria Heights, T3-O in a hard-fought garne. The Indiana game, too, ended in heart- breaking defeat, despite an 86-yard kickoff return by Mike DeGretto. And so we came to our last game-against traditional rival Portage-with an even record. We needed a victory for a winning season. The boys proved equal to the task. Combining a powerful defensive game with a two-touchdown performance by Dean Gittings, the CCHS Red Devils emerged victorious-a winning team. Mike Degretto's bulling his way over for a touch- down was a familiar sight during the T965 campaign. Mike, shown here plunging for his second touchdown in the Triangle Area game, received honorable mention on the Tribune Dem- ocrat All-Scholastic team. if ' , 2, i . Let us reflect on some of the highlights of the 1966 Varsity Cheerleading squad, cap- tained by Connie Ross and Beverly Snyder. In the tall, the cheerleaders were busy deco- rating the fences of the football field with signs designed to put a winning drive into our gridders. School began, and the cheer- leaders were busy practicing their cheers and decorating the halls for pep assemblies. No- vember i9 was the date of the 22nd Annual Cheerleading Contest, and our well-prepared squad turned in a fine showing. For instance, there was the December 10th game against East Cone- maugh. In this contest, Fritz Balsinger scored 4 points in the last 20 seconds to help pull out a I- point victory over the Iron Horses. But perhaps the most exciting game of all was our last home game, against Indiana. Playing their most inspired game, the CC five did a tremendous job in pin- ning a 61-57 loss on the Indians. This game ul- timately forced powerful Indiana into a three way tie for the Tri-County League championship. Later in the year, the Junior Class presented its class play, under the direction of Mr. Paul Crowley. Finally, the big event of the year ar- rived-the Junior Prom held in honor of the seniors. It was towards the success of this event the Juniors had so hopefully- and successfully-worked. Susan Boland brought honor to her class by placing first in the Voice of De- mocracy contest eliminations held at Cen- tral. She then went on to compete locally, where she was awarded a ten dollar check as the second place winner. Another of the Forensic Club members, Bob Feather, capably participated in the District Oratorical Contest, where he was awarded a twenty-five dollar savings bond for his effort. I I5 -'u I I W I 9 N Q, A ' D N U 1 E 5 A f T i 'YZ' In September of 1962, the Class of 1966 assembled for the first time. vve were assigned home-rooms, and we disbursed. It had been a brief meeting, a confused one for us, but a meeting nevertheless-the Class of 1966 was on its way. Before long, we had infiItrated nearly every facet of school life, and it be- came apparent that those of the freshman class were not a group of spectators. By Christmas, our officers and Student Council members had been elected. It wasn't long before our Easter Egg Sale began. The sale was proclaimed a success -ga term which in four years, the Class of 1966 would become accustomed to earmg. Then came May, and, with it, May Day. Anita Yulis of Ebensburg was our attendant-a lovely one, at that. Then the year was over-in some ways, a long, difficult yearg in more ways, a short, exciting one. Our freshman year had been completed-there were three more to go. Our year as Sophisticated Sophomores started out with the magazine sale. We exceeded our goal-another successful year was in the making. We voted to retain our Freshman officers, and-under their leadership-we se- lected our class flower, colors, and motto. As sophomores, we continued our par- ticipation in school activities. In organizations, in athletics, and in the classroom, the Class of 1966 was making itself heard. Shortly after Christmask we were measured for our class rings. We were al- most upperclassmen now, V Spring came, bringing with it May Day, we again chose Anita Yulis as our May Court attendant. Soon afterwards came the long awaited Sophomore Class Party. Whether our particular specialty was eating submarines, playing softball, or danc- ing, everyone enioyed the class party immensely. Then that year was over-we were half through. In fall of 1964, we launched our reign as upperclassmen. We were iuniors now . and proud of'it. For leadership and guidance 'we looked to class sponsors and new 'lis class officers. Our financial condition was enhanced by a highly successful peanut sale and the profits from the Junior Class Play. The play, Finders Creepers, was indeed a credit to our class Thespians, and was widely acclaimed by both the faculty and student body as one of the most hilarious productions in years. Then came the Junior Class Prom. Complete with waterfall and palm. trees, and with music by the Marauders this dance was repeatedly said to be perhaps the finest prom ever held at C.C.H.S. May rolled around again, and our Court attendants included Judy Laverick and Anita Yulis. And so the Junior year came to a close, and, with eager eyes, we set our siqhts on the big one-our Senior Year. Now we had finally made it-we were seniors. Near the end of September, our first class meeting was held and- our new officers were elected. 'Soon work on the Oracle-our Oracle-was underway, and we had begun our Senior Year in earnest. Organization after organization elected slates of all-Senior officers, and- for the first time-C.C.H.S. sported an all-Senior Varsity Cheerleading Squad. November brought the Senior Class Play-a comedy-fantasyentitled Green Val- ley-and, quite naturally, the play was a roaring success. November also brought with it the conclusion of football season. For the first time in 4 years our team- led by seniors-had achieve'd a winning season. The year rushed by quickly- and then, all too soon, it was May. First there was May Day, then the Senior Banquet, then Baccalaureate, then graduation. All of a sudden, we were alumni. Our four years were gone, but the memories will forever remain in our minds and hearts. II9 Senior Class Officers Y X fm ' , ff 5 f BARRY ADAMS Cambria Twp. Academic SUSAN ALLISON Jackson Twp.
