Attaining good citizenship is one of the many goals of Central Cambria High School. The able teachers of our school give their hest efforts to make this possible. To permit a good foundation for the students. the administration allows them to select certain subjects of their own choice. ln addition to the five courses. specialized departments recognize each student as an individual. Recognition of the individual arouses the amhi- tion to search for new endeavors that will further enlarge the studentis personality. When this added interest is developed. more participation is taken in activities such as music. writing. speech. and art. The high regard in which our school is held luv others has made us strive for higher and higher goals. .YJ 2 4+ . . Driving . . . Q. llappy Day! X EX After the smoke of battle had cleared, the sea- son's record for the Red Devils showed six vic- tories, two defeats, and one tie. We were proud of our team and gave much credit to Mr. Meehan, our new coach. The fine spirit of our boys was apparent from the opening game on September 7 against Cone- maugh when we won 13-7. Long and Shields scored TD's, and Kostelnik registered a safety. The next week we tripped Punxsutawney, 13-7. Long scored a TD and extra point in the first quarter while DeBastiani added six points in the second. Meeting their arch-rivals the next Friday, the Red Devils brought home the trophy with a 13-7 win over Cresson. ln the third quarter Long scored a TD and extra point. and Shields hit pay dirt in the final frame. But what a different story the night of Septem- her 28 when Conemaugh Twp. whipped us. 20-13! Francis and Laludice scored TD's and Long kicked an extra point. but strong Conemaugh Twp.-the only team to out-play us-managed to score 20 points. X The following week we could do no more than settle for a 6-6 tie with Hollidaysburg. We scored very early with a 67-yard run by Francis, but later Hollidaysburg tied the score. That was it. But poor Westmont the next week! Our boys came back strong and trounced the opponents, 37- 13. Shields scored three TD,s and an extra point. Long, Francis, and Miller each scored once. We won a big victory the night of October 19 against Northern Cambria-25-6. Early, Francis ran 83 yards for a score. In the second period Long hit pay dirtg DeBastiani added the point, and La- Judice caught a pass for a TD. Shields scored in the fourth period. Five minutes in the third quarter was sad for us the next week. Indiana threw a blitzkrieg at us and in that short time trounced us 27-0 even though we had 13 first-downs to 1ndiana's four. Brilliant line play featured a 7-6 victory over Portage in the finale. We took the lead with a TD by Shields and a point by Long. The opponents scored later. but three times we held them from scoring within the one-yard line. And thus the '56 season went into history. Skillful Coaching . . . The enthusiasm of the '4Varsity Six seemed contagious, and soon the whole student body united to encourage our team. Hours and hours of practice under the direction of Mrs. Lease made this year's cheering squad an outstanding one. Climaxing the year was the selec- tion of our cheerleaders for next year. Coached by Mr. Miller. the team played in Section Two of the Tri-County League with a schedule of eight games. Revival in track interest was evidenced this year by the large number of candidates for the team, which was coached by Mr. Bartoletti and Mr. De- Bastiani. Plans were made for Central Cambria to take part in several meets. Although intramural sports are hampered con- siderably because of the many out-of-town students in our school, the girls held two leagues among the homerooms. During the winter they took part in a Volleyball League won by Room 207. and later they con- ducted the Basketball League. Both activities were managed by the Leader Club under the supervi- sion of Mrs. Lease. A Ni l W Url! Through the efforts of the Art Department, colorful decorations spanned the walls. In every homeroom, too, the same spirit prevailed as each room tried to out-do the other. Sitting in class, we heard the caroling of the mixed chorus through the halls, and after class the homeroom parties were held. Then we went to the music auditorium for some dancing. In the auditorium the glimmering lights on Christmas trees and the soft humming of the chorus provided the setting for the annual Christ- mas pageant. Taking part were Carol Roberts. Monday Jnirectorp, 1 nes. ln the junior year the students really came into their own as far as activities were concerned. The first big event of this kind was the junior class play held in the school auditorium March 15, 1957. at eight oiclock. Titled The Girl Next Doorf, the play proved to he a great success. Starring in this yearls pro- duction were: Thomas Jones, Henry Irvingg Bar- bara james. lrene Irving: Ann Griffith, Alice lrvingg Matthew O'Brien, Andy lrvingg Genevieve McDonald, June Miller: Richard Monday, Tom Irving: William Battista. Clark Kent, and Rose- mary Eppolito, Carol Brewster. It took the co-operation of many persons be- hind the scenes to make an activity of this kind a success. Special credit was due to Mr. Horne, director of the play, and to Nancy Long, student director. As we seniors watched the junior class play, it brought back to mind our play of the previous year, Men Are Like Streetcarsf' Miss Davis, attendance director, did not see these students very often in her office, because they were seldom absent. Their records are: Don Vay. tardy twiceg Madeline Donley. absent once be- cause the bus did not comeg Lloyd Thomas, absent seven days, and Eva Teeter. absent one day. Waiting for the buzzer every morning in the auditorium, chattering students shared the pre- vious night's experiences. As the students scurried to the homerooms at the sound of the warning bell, others were seen in the attendance line await- ing that Hall-important white slipf, At 8:15 the halls were full of students on their way to the various classes. Over and over followed the daily routine through the week. At last on Friday a welcome break in the sched- ule came as the buzzer rang and the students gathered for an assembly. A blanket of quietness settled over the audience as the curtain opened for a program presented by one of the departments. After assembly we went to lunch. and the clat- tering of trays was heard above the talking pupils. After lunch there was some dancing in the gym- nasium, and then back to classes we went at 12:17. The sound of school buses approaching signified that the seventh period soon would end. and soon would end another day and week. With the dis- missal bell at 3:10 we poured from the classrooms with smiles on our faces and plans for the weekend. DAILY PROCEDURES PROV1 Loyalty to Cod and Country . . . The curriculum was arranged in such a manner that these activities could be carried on during the school day because of the large percentage of bus students. Every Wednesday a period was set aside for club meetings. The four units of the Tri-Hi-Y-Alpha. Beta, Gamma, Delta-were the chief interests among the girls. Membership in the Leader Club also was the aim of every girl. Exclusively boys' organizations were the Varsity Club and Key Club. Vocational clubs included the Future Farmers. Future Homemakers, Industrial Arts, Stage. Cam- era. Science, Physics. and Chemistry Clubs. A period every Friday proyided time for assem- bly programs. homeroom programs. singing as- semblies, and class meetings on successive Fridays. ln addition to the regular activity program. qualified students were given an opportunity to take part in interscholastic events. such as foren- sics. county and district music organizations. and special programs. The Junior Prom of 1936 when we treated the Seniors. Everyone had a wonderful time Eight major school dances featured the social life at Central Cambria during the year. The season opened with the Hobo Hop, a dance sponsored by Leader Club in Uctober. Next the football players were honored at the Pigskin Turkey Dance held by Alpha in November. One of the biggest dances of the year was the Sno-Ball sponsored by the seniors. It highlighted the Christmas activities when the first CCHS rov- altv were named!-the Snow King and Queen. To welcome the new vear. the Library Club sponsored the Mid-Semester Dance in January, but in February the Leader Club reversed the Hbov-treat-girli' routine. :Xt the Topsv Turvv Dance the girls revealed their favorite beaus bv inviting him to the frolic. Also in February The Spirit held the first annual Bobbv Sox Dance to honor the basketball players. As the vear progressed. the Varsity Club put on the big affair in May-The Hay llav Dance. The real climax of the year was the junior Prom later in the month. Many other dances were hr-ld through the vear. These inf-luded the llfworrl Hops and the Football and Basketball llanres held by the Cheerleaders after ear-h home game. Every- one was looking forward to May Day on May -1, and on the long-awaited night, our beautiful queen. ldamarie Vicini. took her place on the throne. The program. 'Gymbareef' which followed was a big success as was the dance in the gymnasium. The seniors certainly were treated royally at the final formal of the year, the Junior Prom. on May 18. As graduation neared. we seniors began to realize that our life at Central Cambria was almost closed. Finally on May 27. at eight o'clock. we found ourselves forming a processional. ready to receive our diplomas. Our graduation program was here. and we seniors left our Alma Mater with many pleasant memories. As we said Fare-well' we realized. perhaps for the first time, how much Central Cambria High School really has done to prepare us for our life in the future. , Q. Human . -. .Dave A .
