Because of the many opportunities offered in our War industries, the comparatively low salaries of teachers, and the number of teach- ers Who have entered the armed forces, Ebens- burg-Cambria High School, is faced with a shortage of qualified teachers. The science department suffered most in the loss of teachers. Mr. Frank Thornton, Who formerly taught mathematics, is now the chem- istry and general science teacher, While Miss Adelaide Luther, former English teacher, in- structs in the mathematics department. Miss Sarah Beacham, a member of the physics de- partment, married, and this vacancy is now temporarily filled by Mr. Mahlon Baum- gardner. Physical education is another department under strain during this war-time emergency. After the departure of Miss Kathryn Thomas, who secured a position nearer home, Mrs. Iulia Lease became temporarily the health education instructor. She was relieved by Mrs. Burnzetta Smith. Receiving a commission as lieutenant junior grade in the Navy, Mr. Iames Cook left his post as teacher of civics and problems of democracy to Mr. Paul Myers. The commercial department opened this fall With just two of the usual three members. When Miss Elizabeth Reese secured a position in Ferndale, Miss Margaret Mary Marshall came to take her place. Miss Ieanne Lindaman, having been ac- cepted in the officers' candidate school of the Spars, left March 17. Her position was filled by Miss Bernice Craig. SlS'l'l','lI The Board of Education of Ebensburg-Cam- bria High School meets in the library on the. second Thursday of each month, except December when the meeting is held the first Monday for the purpose of reorganizalion and election of officers. The Board is composed of twelve members, five from Ebensburg, and seven from Cam- bria Township. A majority vote of each board is needed to take action on any motion. The recording secretary and the treasurer who are elected in Iune are not members of the Board, but are essential in the keeping of records correctly. Since the shortage of teachers felt in all parts of the country, the School Board has spent most of its time finding suitable persons to fill the vacancies left by those Who have joined the armed forces or taken ct position in some other school. Fixing the salaries of teachers and em- ployees is another duty of this group. Part of the salaries is paid by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but the remainder is paid from taxes, as is the maintenance of the build- ing and equipment. Any person incurring a bill for school supplies, athletic equipment, or musical instruments must approve the bill be- fore a motion can be made to pay it.
