SlS'l'l','lI The Board of Education of Ebensburg-Cam- bria High School meets in the library on the. second Thursday of each month, except December when the meeting is held the first Monday for the purpose of reorganizalion and election of officers. The Board is composed of twelve members, five from Ebensburg, and seven from Cam- bria Township. A majority vote of each board is needed to take action on any motion. The recording secretary and the treasurer who are elected in Iune are not members of the Board, but are essential in the keeping of records correctly. Since the shortage of teachers felt in all parts of the country, the School Board has spent most of its time finding suitable persons to fill the vacancies left by those Who have joined the armed forces or taken ct position in some other school. Fixing the salaries of teachers and em- ployees is another duty of this group. Part of the salaries is paid by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but the remainder is paid from taxes, as is the maintenance of the build- ing and equipment. Any person incurring a bill for school supplies, athletic equipment, or musical instruments must approve the bill be- fore a motion can be made to pay it. The excellent facilities for use in securing an education, the beautiful building given the students in which to study, and the numerous courses of study which one can pursue are a credit to the community, being a direct result of our efficient School Board, in cooperation with the taxpayers NIANDINL F bl'NIlclN tsl its .ul ,' fi-lofi in rl-Zlif YW Ki .-Xllivri linnis Klr, lolz: Simdcrlaziri, Mr. Clarence .. Because of the many opportunities offered in our War industries, the comparatively low salaries of teachers, and the number of teach- ers Who have entered the armed forces, Ebens- burg-Cambria High School, is faced with a shortage of qualified teachers. The science department suffered most in the loss of teachers. Mr. Frank Thornton, Who formerly taught mathematics, is now the chem- istry and general science teacher, While Miss Adelaide Luther, former English teacher, in- structs in the mathematics department. Miss Sarah Beacham, a member of the physics de- partment, married, and this vacancy is now temporarily filled by Mr. Mahlon Baum- gardner. Physical education is another department under strain during this war-time emergency. After the departure of Miss Kathryn Thomas, who secured a position nearer home, Mrs. Iulia Lease became temporarily the health education instructor. She was relieved by Mrs. Burnzetta Smith. Receiving a commission as lieutenant junior grade in the Navy, Mr. Iames Cook left his post as teacher of civics and problems of democracy to Mr. Paul Myers. The commercial department opened this fall With just two of the usual three members. When Miss Elizabeth Reese secured a position in Ferndale, Miss Margaret Mary Marshall came to take her place. All 246 of us freshies were scared green, What rush- ing through the halls! ! New faces-new friends-new teachers! At our first class meet- ing, with Miss Davis and Mr. Iohnston making us feel very much at home, we nominated members for Student Council. Later Barbara Anderson and Gerald Kane were elected. Vile were thrilled to see many of our names in The Spirit. Gradually we became accus- tomed to the new life at high school. October- You've got the pep! -Yes, we freshmen surely had, for we attended every football game at which we loyally and loudly cheered for the Red Devils, our classmates on the bench, and, last but not least, Doc Liv- ingston, our freshman manager. A committee with Walter Sutilla as chairman drew up our constitution, which was adopted by the class. Autumn came, and the fallen red and gold leaves were trampled under foot. November-Hooray! ! We brought luck to our Red Devils, for they became Conference Champs. We had a vacation, for it was Thanks- giving-but soon back to 5x Yi' y 15 and Semper Paratus. December-At last the Topsy Turvy Dance . . . . . freshman girls were definitely on the beam because now was their chance! Then . . . eleven long, carefree days for Christmas vacation . . . to enjoy new skates, skis, clothes, and presents galore. Oh-Frank Sinatra-oh! ! january-Ch unhappy day! Our basketball heroes let us down when they lost to the juniors 54-8. At our class meeting we elected our officers. They are Iames Maloney, Presi- dentg Roy Iames, Vice President, Carroll An- derson, our minute-maker, Eleanor Kushner, who had some time collecting all our dues, Nancy Wright and William Orange, our re- porters, who were always on the lookout for news ..... Robert Colberg left us to join the Navy. March--Excitement! ! The freshies were stars! There was a Latin play in Friday assem- bly, and freshmen took part, We believe Bar- bara Larimer had enough spirit to be all four years of Latin instead of just Latin I. We also took some part in the Music Festival, being members of the various musical organizations. Our representatives for The Flamingo were Eleanor Kushner, Doris Yorgey, and Gerald Kane. We chose our banner and colors this month at our class meeting. April-Prospects for a skate were discussed . . . . . Umbrellas--raincoats-boots . . . for we had April showers and heard the first peepers of spring. May-Spring flowers and four more weeks of school! At last came those reports announc- ing that most of us had graduated from green freshies to sophisticated sophies. ff, U l.f.f I .ro RIGHT' xxru ft...--if rn.-pf..-V... We were greeted by our class adviser, Mrs. Davis, and our second year at ECHS started with a bang! October-Our banner with its inspiring motto, Seeking Higher Things, was proudly displayed. Congratulations, Ruthanna! We cer- tainly appreciale your effort in planning the design. This months attraction was the skate. Imagine! Two hundred people attended! No wonder Bettie Hardin found her feet in front of her instead of under her. November-Well! That certainly was a load off our minds when the responsibility for run- ning the class was handed over to our newly elected officers--President Zane Bolinger, and his capable assistants, Rena Sisti, Carolyn Gri- fith, Rosemary Bloom, Pauline Gatto, and lack Kinkead. December-And just listen to this! lack Emptield, Irvin Foust and Iack Kinkead dis- played such brilliant tactics on the football field that they earned their letters this season. Another laurel for the Class of '45! Ianuary-Flash! ..... Biggest surprise of the year! Anna Thomas and Margaret Katona exhibited skill in art by making a beautiful Valentine box for the Home Economics Department. . . . . . Sophomore Latin students presented a portion of Shakespeare's Iulius Caesar. Tom Brutus Englehart and Mark Antony Myers made noble-looking Romans, but the weep- ing sophomores threatened to flood them off the stage. March-Sophomores in the limelight again! Pat Dunegan, Dale Guynn, and Frances Whar- ton in the English Program proved what might happen to slang-users. And we hardly recog- nized Doris Rice with her southern accent and black face! April-Ah Spring! And with it came that same old feeling. Nadine and Kiff seemed to be hampered by the presence of a rose- scented cloud hovering over them. Of course in the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. The Sophomore Party blotted out everything unpleasant this month. I bear that name with pride, for when I think of how I have grown from an idea to cr reality, I arn very grateful to those persons who made me what I am today. My actual working-life was short-from September, 1943 to May, 1944-but those few months were so filled with excitement for me that I feel I must let someone share them with rne. Because of this, I have decided to make my diary an open book for everyone to read. September, l943 Dear Diary: For a few bad moments, I Was afraid that you weren't going to have a first entry-or a last one, but that worry is over. Pictures are being taken around the school and everyone's excited. If I seem a little impetuous, you'll know why when I tell you the news. My theme is to be music, and I am to be dedicated to-the alumni of ECHS now fighting for the good old U. S. A.! ! ! November, 1943 I am really taking shape now. On the fourth of this month the first money was collected by the circulation staff lOne day recently 5273.80 was collectedl. That staff surely knows how to worklbut in the case of Tulio Bonora, laziness proved greater than valor. Well, per- haps the junior was a better salesman than T. B. December, 1943 I have just discovered that, because of the war, my outside cover won't be padded-but who cares? A good solid leather cover is as durable any old day. First payments are due this month. By December 16th, 15492.30 was collected. Not bad for a Christmas present! Ianuary, 1944 Happy New Year!-and it is a happy one for me! I have been informed that 490 Oracles have been ordered-one hundred more than were ever ordered before! Last payments are due, but Ruth Aitken and Roberta Hughes needn't worry-they have their money in al- ready. The advertising staff will give up its chairman, Iames Ball, to the Navy soon. lim leaves a grand record behind him, for the ad- vertising staff has gone over the top. February, 1944 Individual Write-ups are completed. Work has begun on organization Write-ups. The seniors selected those persons whose pictures will appear on the section pages. lIoe Link surely looked funny wearing a football suit in February? ..... Maurine Berkstresser is really displaying her artistic ability in every- one of the sketches she draws. March, 1944 The organization write-ups were due on the first. Most of the staffs have completed their work-that is all except the typing staff. By the end of this month, my dummy will be finished. April, 1944 I am now at the mercy of the printer. After he's done with me, I'll be returned home to be proof-read . . . and then I'm ready for com- pletion. May, 1944 Well, here I am-in my best bib and tucker -ready for my public's eye. Perhaps the Band's most outstanding serv- ice is that of executing intricate drills and playing spirited marches at our football games. This year at the Indiana game, the Band par- ticipated in a dedication service honoring those who are in the armed forces from ECHS and those who have made the supreme sacri- fice. Because of transportation facilities, only a small Pep Band traveled to the out-of-town football games. They very ably provided en- tertainment by means of original and clever drills. Immediately after football season, the Band settles down to the hard practice of concert selections, usually with the Annual Music Festival in mind. Every Monday and Wednesday morning finds a small pep group supplying music for assembly. Marches constitute its program as 'ff ' 's li 1- ,-1-1-1 SPIRITED MARCHES ECHO HERE.. THERE . . .STRAINS OF OVERTUREb the students enter and leave the auditorium. During the summer months Band rehear- sals are carried on, and concerts are present- ed for the entertainment of the community. Conditions arising this year, because of the war, greatly curtailed the Band's activities. No county or state gatherings were held nor was there Forensic competition. However, this en- abled the Band to develop a large repertoire, consisting of various types of selections in- stead of perfecting two for contest purposes. Under the careful guidance of its director and the leadership of its able officers-lack Roberts, Iames Baumgardner, and lean Kneeg president, vice president, and secretary-treas- urer, respectively-the Band this year has been a credit both to the music department and to the school. Another one of the most helpful organi- zations of our school is the Orchestra. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning finds its forty- one members rehearsing many symphonic se- lections. Under the baton of Mr. Smathers, the Or- chestra furnishes music during intermission at both the Iunior and Senior Class Plays. It takes an important part in the Christmas pro- gram by the playing of favorite Yule-tide carols, and this year it played its Christmas selections for the pupils of the Ebensburg Grade School. This spring found the Orchestra traveling to Colver, where it entertained the Parent-Teachers' Association. For the Annual Music Festival held in March, the Orchestra rendered several delight- ful selections among which were an orchestral tone poem, Sunrise at Sea, and a community favorite, Little Tin Soldiers. No organization can carry on without ef- ficient officers. Those elected for this year- Sally Elder, president, Iames Baumgardner, vice president, Iack Roberts, secretary-did much to make- the Orchestra both a pleasure and a success. li' llltlll klfllll' llll'lllN!!lN l Twice each week the harmonious voices ot some forty students are blended in the Music Auditorium to produce a choral group ot which Ebensburg-Cambria can be justly proud. The Mixed Chorus, which is under the di- rection oi Mr. Smathers, is a very important group in the Music Department, for from this group comes most of the material tor produc- ing operettas and other musical shows. Before the war, it, along with other musical groups from our school, entered Forensic Contests and always had a large number of representatives take part in the All-County Festivals. The chorus, which is composed of members from both the girls' and boys' choruses, has its own group of student officers. The president, Iames Baumgardner, and the vice president, Iack Roberts often direct the opening num bers of a rehearsal While the secretary Sally Elder takes the roll and the librarian Flor ence Brown passes out music lilfll l't HI lrll l.'-l'l!. ! llllflll In March the Mixed Chorus and the Girls' Chorus were participants in the annual school Music Festival. In this program the chorus sang selections ot several distinctive types. Among those sung were sacred numbers such as The Cherubim Song and lighter numbers ot which My Bonnie Lass was the most out- standing. The Girls' Chorus was under the direction of Miss Caroline Gessler this year. Besides taking part in the Music Festival, this group also participated in the Christmas program. The Boys' Chorus was active only during the first semester, at the end of which time it was decided that the boys would meet only twice weekly so that the Dance Band could utilize the Friday period. Although this chorus did not make any public appearances the boys did learn many fine songs which they enjoyed singing Another year might see this group actively engaged in that long delayed minslrel ix N tx 4 i ' 1 1 1 - 1 , - 1 . . iff-.li ' Rl thx' Ruin! l.- .s Riiiwi' lli.iv:.51.i:tt::ii Kimi- lawns. Football camp last tall revealed a bunch ot greenies with a veteran captain, Doug Ball, and our two hopeful coaches. Most of us expected only a fair fight from this combin- ation. But as team after team tell victims to the tactics ot the Red Devils, we began to realize this was more than a team-it was a unit in which each man did his job with the precision ot a machine. Victory followed vic- tory With a slight nod to Westmont as the only bowing of the season. Looking back on the more memorable acts in the games, we remember Ioe Hulgus mak- ing gaps in the Ferndale line as he raced through center to pick up that needed first and ten. One for the books is what we called it when Bill Barber scored after racing sixty-tive yards on the hidden ball play and then brought down a pass for his second touch- down during the Hollidaysburg upset. Ioe Link Will be remembered as the boy who snatched the ball from a surprised Somerset player and raced 50 yards to pay dirt before the oppo- nents realized what took place. Semko played a good game all season with passing and kick- ing reaching a state of near-perfection as the season progressed and experience was gained. Gathering points gradually, we held on to them, and it soon became apparent that the outcome of the Huntingdon game would decide our bid to the Conference title.
